Five players that can break out with their new teams (JUSTIN COLEMAN, DETROIT LIONS: This move will go a long way in securing the slot cornerback position for Lions in 2019, a position that was somewhat of a weak spot last year. During the 2018 season, Nevin Lawson led the team with 389 slot coverage snaps, yet his 63.8 overall grade and his 62.5 coverage grade respectively ranked 56th and 57th among the 97 defensive players with at least 100 slot coverage snaps last year. During his time in the league, Coleman has proved to be one of the better options at the position. He’s recorded single-season coverage grades of at least 75.0 in each of the last two campaigns, while his four-year slot coverage grade of 79.1 ranks seventh among cornerbacks with at least 500 slot coverage snaps over that span. When targeted as the primary slot coverage defender during his career, Coleman has allowed 96 catches from 154 targets for 1032 yards, four touchdowns and three interceptions. 2019 NFL Free Agency winners and losers: PFF WAR (4. Detroit Lions: The Lions spent big, but they spent big on pieces that should ultimately pay off if they perform. Trey Flowers rejoins his former defensive coordinator in Lions’ Head Coach Matt Patricia, heading over from New England where he was worth over a half a win above replacement. Flowers finished second among edge defenders in total pressures last year, the second consecutive season in which he brought in at least 77 pressures on the quarterback. To put that kind of production into perspective for Detroit fans, no Lions pass-rusher in the PFF era (2006-Present) has accumulated more than 72 pressures in a season, and only twice since 2006 has a pass-rusher recorded more than 70. Not since Ezekiel Ansah recorded 71 in 2014 and Ndamukong Suh recorded 72 in 2013 have the Lions had more than 70 pressures in a season. Justin Coleman also joined the defense to man the slot, ideally, as the slot cornerback continues to grow in importance in today’s NFL. Aside from Tracy Walker and Darius Slay, no defensive back saw coverage grades above 70.0 last season whereas Coleman has back-to-back 75.0-plus coverage grades during his two years in Seattle. Pro Day – Fresno State (The entire league was on hand for Fresno State pro day as the program had three players participate at the combine. Two of those players significantly improved their 40 time today. KeeSean Johnson, a favorite receiver of mine for almost two years, improved just about all his marks from his combine workout. The consensus from most was Johnson timed 4.53 seconds in the 40, though there were a number of watches that clocked him under 4.50. That’s one-tenth faster than Johnson’s time from Indianapolis. His 60-yard shuttle was an incredibly fast 10.96 seconds while his short-shuttle came in at 3.81 seconds, despite a slip. Johnson’s also touched 32.5 inches in the vertical jump, an improvement of 2.5-inches from the combine. He looked terrific in position drills, just as he did in Indianapolis, running crisp routes and catching the ball well. The Cincinnati Bengals had their assistant receiver coach on hand. He asked Johnson run specific routes used by the Bengals after position drills ended then took the wide out to dinner this evening.
