Mock Draft Roundup #15

CBS Edwards (7. WR Ja'Marr Chase:  Detroit is slated to lose the entire wide receiver room to free agency, which creates a need at the position. Ja'Marr Chase would be an elite option for Jared Goff or whoever is under center.) (2-18-21):  https://www.cbssports.com/nfl/draft/news/2021-nfl-mock-draft-patriots-have-jaylen-waddle-fall-in-lap-panthers-pick-trey-lance-saints-go-qb/

CBS Trapasso (7.  WR Devonta Smith:  There are weight concerns with Smith, yet that's the only ding on his draft profile.) (2-17-21):  https://www.cbssports.com/nfl/draft/news/2021-nfl-mock-draft-texans-take-jamarr-chase-after-trading-deshaun-watson-trey-lance-to-49ers/

Walterfootball (7.  WR Ja'Marr Chade:  Matthew Stafford was traded to the Rams, but I don't think they're going after a quarterback with this pick because they're likely to give Jared Goff a try for one year. If so, Detroit will focus on its other big issues, including their receivers. Both Kenny Golladay and Marvin Jones are impending free agents, and only one is expected to return.  Chase caught 17 passes in his freshman year, then took a huge step forward in 2019, displaying the ability of a top-10 prospect.  41. CB Paulson Adebo:  The Lions have serious problems at cornerback, so they may use a second-day pick on the position.  Paulson Adebo has great size, coverage skills and play-making ability. He struggled a bit in 2019, but could rebound next year.  72. DE Azeez Ojulari: The Lions need to add to their pass rush if they want to beat Aaron Rodgers.  Azeez Ojulari has great potential, but doesn't appear ready to play in the NFL just yet. He should've returned to school for another year.  88.  DT Tedarrell Slaton:  The Lions can use the pick they acquired from the Rams to fix their woeful run defense.  Tedarrell Slaton is a massive nose tackle who causes lots of disruption. 102. G Jared Goldwire:  The Lions could address their offensive line so that D'Andre Swift gets some great run blocking.  Jared Goldwire has made tremendous strides, performing very well in 2020 after mediocre seasons beforehand.  136.  CB Ambry Thomas:  The Lions had one of the worst cornerbacking units in the NFL last year, so they'll need multiple new players at the position.) (2-16-21):  https://walterfootball.com/draft2021.php

NFL.com Daniel Jeremiah (7. LB Micah Parsons:  The Super Bowl showed us what speed and athleticism at the second level can do for a defense. Parsons brings those tools to Detroit.) (2-16-21):  https://www.nfl.com/news/daniel-jeremiah-2021-nfl-mock-draft-2-0-saints-select-drew-brees-heir-apparent

CBS Prisco (7. WR Devonta Smith:  They will likely lose Kenny Golladay in free agency, so they need a young speed player outside. The big concern with Smith is size, but he can fly.) (2-16-21):  https://www.cbssports.com/nfl/draft/news/2021-nfl-mock-draft-dolphins-get-tua-tagovailoa-a-major-weapon-jets-secure-a-qb-and-rb-in-round-1/

Walterfootball Charlie (7.  LB Micah Parsons - Detroit needs a lot of upgrades to its defensive front seven. If the character issues check out, Parsons could be a building block and a plug-and-play upgrade in the middle of the Lions' defense.  Parsons totaled 109 tackles, five sacks, four forced fumbles and five passes defended in 2019. He was always around the ball and produced some splash plays for Penn State. Parsons broke into the starting lineup as a true freshman in 2018 and showed he has lot of upside to develop into an intriguing player. On the year, he totaled 83 tackles with five for a loss, 1.5 sacks and two forced fumbles. Parsons (6-3, 245) has good size, speed and quality instincts. Prior to the Big Ten canceling and then restarting its season, Parsons decided not to play in 2020. Team sources say that while Parsons is not a criminal, he is being dinged for character in their reports.  41.  DE Daviyon Nixon:  The Lions need more edge rushers, linebackers, and interior defensive line talent. Here's the last.  Nixon was very good for Iowa in 2020, recording 5.5 sacks, 45 tackles, a forced fumble and an interception. He totaled 29 tackles and three sacks in his first season of playing time for Iowa as a rotational backup. The 6-foot-3, 305-pound junior is quick at the point of attack with an ability to fire his gap and close on the quarterback. Nixon improved his run defense in 2020 and is a well-rounded defender with a lot of upside.  72.  OT Dan Moore:  The Lions could use a right tackle upgrade.  The 6-foot-5, 309-pounder was a solid blocker for the Aggies in 2020 being a steady protector of Kellen Mond and consistently contributing to opening holes for Isaiah Spiller. If Moore had more arm length, he could go higher, as he is a well-rounded blocker. Team sources say Moore had an impressive week at the Senior Bowl and they like his physicality in the ground game. Moore enters the NFL ready to contribute thanks to being a 3-year starter in the SEC and gaining experience against a lot of excellent competition.  88. WR Rashod Bateman:  The Lions will probably need to at least one receiver, if not two receivers, after free agency.  Bateman recorded 36 receptions for 472 yards and two touchdowns in 2020 before opting out of the remainder of the season. The 6-foot-2, 210-pounder had opted out prior to the Big Ten canceling and then rescheduling its season, but opted back in for five games before opting out again.  Bateman was part of dynamic tandem with Tyler Johnson in 2019, as Bateman totaled 1,219 yards and 11 touchdowns on 60 receptions. With a former NFL wide receivers coach as the head coach of the Gophers, Bateman has solid development in terms of his route running and technique. However, he could have issues with enough speed to separate from NFL cornerbacks, plus he dropped a significant number of passes in 2019.) (2-15-21):  https://walterfootball.com/draft2021charlie.php

CBS Wilson (7.  LB Micah Parsons:  Parsons opted out, but he didn't hurt his draft stock by doing so. He might end up being the best off-ball linebacker to come out in the last 4-5 years.) (2-15-21):  https://www.cbssports.com/nfl/draft/news/2021-nfl-mock-draft-bengals-get-joe-burrow-best-pass-catcher-in-class-steelers-target-rb-in-round-1/

PFF Gayle (7. DETROIT LIONS: LB Micah Parsons:  The former Penn State off-ball linebacker is currently PFF’s sixth-ranked prospect on the 2021 NFL Draft board. Parsons also finished the 2019 season as the highest-graded off-ball linebacker (91.6). He also possesses role versatility that Dan Campbell and the Lions should covet in that he can play off-ball alignments on early downs and rush off the edge or blitz on passing downs. Parsons is one of the better pass-rushing off-ball linebacker prospects we've seen over the past few drafts.) (2-15-21):  https://www.pff.com/news/draft-2021-nfl-mock-draft-justin-fields-atlanta-falcons-jaylen-waddle-philadelphia-eagles-first-round-wr-green-bay-packers

Tankathon (7.  QB Trey Lance.  41.  WR Terrace Marshall.  72. DE Quincy Roche.  89. OT Josh Myers) (2-14-21):

Foxsports Mcintyre (7. Detroit Lions – LB Micah Parsons - 2020 season stats: N/A (opted out of the season).  2019 season stats: 5.0 sacks, 109 total tackles, 4 fumbles forced, 1 fumble recovered, 5 passes defended.  Let’s see what happens with Kenny Golladay in free agency. If he isn't retained, you’ll hear a lot of chatter about a WR. But new GM Brad Holmes arrives after nearly two decades in L.A., where the Rams recently found value in WRs after the first round – Van Jefferson (second round), Cooper Kupp (third) and Josh Reynolds (fourth) – and previously flopped taking a small receiver early (Tavon Austin).) (2-12-21):  https://www.foxsports.com/stories/nfl/jason-mcintyre-nfl-mock-draft-7-mac-jones-trevor-lawrence-dallas-cowboys

Draft Tek (7. QB Justin Fields: The last time we saw you here, the Matthew Stafford trade rumors were swirling and so were the questions; Where was the QB headed to? What was the asking price? What could new GM Brad Holmes get in return? Would he be able to swindle a more experienced GM or be taken advantage of as the new kid on the block? Ultimately, all of those questions would be answered as Stafford was dealt in a blockbuster deal of sorts for QB Jared Goff and two future first-round picks (2022 and 2023).  Post-trade, the general consensus pegged Detroit as the winner of the move, as the trade ensured the Lions' QB position is secure in an unsecure draft position at #7, along with setting themselves up for years with the two future first rounders.  By acquiring Goff, the Lions can be somewhat competitive in an NFC North Division that currently boasts a lot of question marks for 2021. Kirk Cousins has been in trade talk, Aaron Rodgers was quoted that his future is "uncertain", and of course the Bears are now being rumored to be in on the Deshaun Watson and Carson Wentz Sweepstakes (not guaranteed to land either of them). The Lions could hang in there in 2021 if certain chips fall their way (it's a big if, I do realize).  Knowing full-well that Goff can play his position competently and understanding he may not be the long-term answer at QB, Detroit would be wise to still consider a QB at #7, but there's one slight problem: the top-flight QBs in this class may not be around by the time Detroit's pick arrives. This makes the acquisition of Goff look that much more intelligent considering this potential "disaster" scenario where there's a run of QBs and Detroit is left empty-handed. With Goff as a placeholder, the Lions could find their next franchise QB at #7 if the chips fall in their favor, whether it be Justin Fields, Trey Lance, or even Mac Jones who could fly up the boards. Justin Fields has been cited as having decision-making concerns and needing to be more anticipatory. Although his production at Ohio State should count for something, finding a home in Detroit where some grooming can take place as the backup could be an ideal spot for Fields and a match made in heaven for Detroit. - Doug Hyde, Lions Analyst  41. WR Terrace Marshall.:  When your franchise may go into the offseason without Marvin Jones or Danny Amendola, all while having no guarantee that Kenny Golladay will re-sign with the team, it surprisingly leaves the franchise with an easy choice: select a wide receiver from "Wide Receiver U".  For some, any pro-ready wide receiver here for Detroit would be a wise move, as clearly the team needs depth given the above scenario. While Terrace Marshall doesn't necessarily "wow" you with his numbers, he was a very productive receiver for the Tigers. During their National Championship run in 2019 as well as limited action in COVID-stricken 2020, Marshall was often overshadowed by Justin Jefferson (2019) and Ja'Marr Chase (2019 and 2020) as his teammates often stole the spotlight.  In back-to-back seasons, Marshall has posted double-digit receiving touchdowns and, in only 7 games during 2020, eclipsed 700 receiving yards on 48 receptions. This screams playmaking ability. Standing at 6'3", Marshall has the potential to play like Kenny Golladay and be a key cog in an offense that will desperately need an ability to get vertical, especially if they end up losing all three of their top receivers from just a year ago. - Doug Hyde, Lions Analyst.  72.  DE Patrick Jones  88.  DT Darius Stills.  102. WR Elijah Moore.  136.  CB Olaijah Griffin) (1-31-21):  https://www.drafttek.com/2021-NFL-Draft-Team-Pages/Lions-Draft-Page.asp

Yahoo (7. Detroit Lions - Alabama WR Jaylen Waddle:  Waddle limped back onto the field for the national title game, and his rare explosion was nowhere to be found that night, as he clearly was playing at less than full strength. Even still, Waddle had more receiving yards than DeVonta Smith when Waddle got hurt in the fifth game last season, and he’s expected to make a complete recovery.  The Lions could lose Kenny Golladay to free agency and appear to need to revamp the unit on the whole. Waddle’s yards-after-the-catch knack would be an excellent first building block for new GM Brad Holmes.) NFL.com Reuter (7. QB Trey Lance:  After the Lions traded for Jared Goff and a bundle of draft picks, new coach Dan Campbell said the team was building toward two years from now. Well, selecting the athletic, strong-armed, but inexperienced Lance to learn for a couple of years behind Goff is in that same vein.  41. WR Rashod Bateman.  72. DE Quincy Roche.  88. S Richie Grant) (2-8-21):  https://www.nfl.com/news/three-round-2021-nfl-mock-draft-1-0-jets-trade-out-of-no-2-overall-pick

PFF Renner (9. DETROIT LIONS (FROM DENVER): LB MICAH PARSONS, PENN STATEI:  It seems fairly clear that Chris Spielman is leaving his fingerprints on the Lions' moves of late. If that continues through the draft, he’ll certainly be enamored with Parsons' throwback size and skill set at his former position. Parsons earned the second-highest run-defense grade we’ve given a linebacker as a sophomore in 2019.) NFL.com Zierlein (7. WR Ja'Marr Chase:  The Lions could go in a number of directions here, including cornerback or linebacker, but with almost an entire receiving corps set to hit free agency, Chase could serve as a splashy WR1 for their new QB.) (2-4-21):  https://www.nfl.com/news/lance-zierlein-2021-nfl-mock-draft-1-0-patriots-49ers-select-qbs-in-round-1

SN (7. Detroit Lions (5-11) - WR Jaylen Waddle:  Waddle, like his Crimson Tide teammate Smith, is a highly skilled all-around receiver the Lions could use to run all the routes and get open everywhere outside for Jared Goff. Waddle would be a great replacement for aging free agent Marvin Jones Jr., assuming the Lions bring back big field-stretching younger free agent Kenny Golladay. Golladay, Waddle and tight end T.J. Hockenson would be a good foundation for Anthony Lynn's new-look passing offense.) (2-3-21):   https://www.sportingnews.com/us/nfl/news/nfl-mock-draft-2021-jets-dolphins-cowboys-patriots/1jr0c2gz92z4g14to3p2m751e4

Athlon Sports (7. Detroit Lions — LB Micah Parsons:  Even with the Lions landing Jared Goff in return for Matthew Stafford, the QB position is still unsettled enough to the point where Detroit could look for another option under center. Still, Parsons is the truly elite talent at linebacker in this draft and would be somebody the new staff will love to build around on and off the field.) (2-2-21):  https://athlonsports.com/nfl/2021-nfl-mock-draft-first-round-predictions-updated-senior-bowl

NFL.com Brooks (7. Lions - WR Jaylen Waddle:  GM Brad Holmes and Co. display their trust in Jared Goff -- who is being sent to Detroit in the deal the Lions and Rams agreed to over the weekend -- by adding an explosive pass catcher to the lineup.) (2-1-21):  https://www.nfl.com/news/bucky-brooks-2021-nfl-mock-draft-1-0-jets-start-new-era-at-qb-with-justin-fields

PFF Linsey (7. DETROIT LIONS: QB TREY LANCE, NORTH DAKOTA STATE:  The Lions took back Jared Goff as part of the Matthew Stafford trade, but it’s unlikely that he is the Lions’ preferred long-term answer at the quarterback position. At the very least, he isn’t a reason to avoid taking a quarterback like Lance here in the draft.  There is legitimate concern surrounding Lance's accuracy and experience, especially since he's played just one season as a starter in the FCS, but he also has absurd arm talent and gives any team the option to lean on him in the running game. It’s a bet worth taking for Detroit as they look toward life without Stafford.) (2-1-21):  https://www.pff.com/news/draft-2021-nfl-mock-draft-new-york-jets-acquire-deshaun-watson-zach-wilson-lands-with-the-houston-texans-at-no-2-overall

FTW (TRADE! 4. Detroit Lions (via Atlanta Falcons (4-12)): Zach Wilson, QB, BYU - What would the trade look like? The Lions give up No. 7 overall and the Rams’ 2022 first round pick, a product of the Stafford deal.  The Lions have ample draft assets after trading away Stafford. That allows them to attack (and, if it’s what you’re into, bite the kneecaps off) the draft board to land a top quarterback. Goff is a fine short-term starter, but it’s hard to imagine he’ll thrive in Detroit after looking below average under an offensive genius, Sean McVay. The Lions should stay aggressive in targeting a quarterback.  Wilson’s status as a one-hit wonder should be somewhat concerning. You can talk all you want about how this kid eats, sleeps, breathes, inhales, exhales and farts football. He’s had just one year of elite production. But that won’t matter to the Lions. Let’s pair Wilson with another Football Guy, Dan Campbell.) (2-1-21):  https://ftw.usatoday.com/lists/nfl-2021-mock-draft-deshaun-watson-matthew-stafford-trades

Touchdown Wire Schoefield (7.  Detroit Lions: WR Jaylen Waddle:  Now that Stafford and Detroit have parted ways and Jared Goff is the new quarterback of the Lions, the organization will add a weapon for him in Jaylen Waddle. With questions about Kenny Golladay and Marvin Jones, wide receiver is a position of need. Some might wonder about DeVonta Smith at this point, and that is a fair question. Waddle’s teammate certainly has the production – and a Heisman Trophy to match – but Waddle could be the more complete prospect. Smith’s frame is going to scare some teams away, as the list of elite wideouts that weigh under 175 pounds is not exactly long. That is why Smith’s measurements at the Alabama Pro Day are going to be critical. With Waddle, the Lions get an explosive threat with a more NFL-ready frame, and a weapon for their new QB. Just go watch his game against Missouri from this past season and you will be a believer too.) (1-30-21):  https://touchdownwire.usatoday.com/lists/trevor-lawrence-justin-fields-trey-lance-devonta-smith-2021-nfl-draft-mock-draft/

Radio.com (7. Detroit Lions - QB Trey Lance:  It appears to be a matter of when, not if, the Lions trade former No. 1 overall pick Matthew Stafford this offseason. With Kenny Golladay and Marvin Jones Jr. also set to hit free agency, the Lions appear destined for a few very lean years. That may mean signing a bridge quarterback and simply taking whoever they believe is the best player at this position, regardless of position. We're going to bet, though, that the trio of Chris Spielman, Brad Holmes and Dan Campbell will want to get the quarterback situation figured out. If Lance is still on the board at pick No. 7, he'd be an intriguing selection after tossing 28 touchdowns to zero interceptions in 2019, while rushing for 1,110 yards.) (1-26-21):  https://www.radio.com/971theticket/nfl-mock-draft-first-round-preview-ahead-of-super-bowl-lv

USA Today Nate Davis (7. Detroit Lions – Justin Fields, QB, Ohio State: They're not parting with Stafford to turn the keys over to Chase Daniel or David Blough. Fields is a multi-dimensional threat who was at his best with six TD passes against Clemson in the college playoff semifinals. However that performance was bracketed by several checkered ones, including his final one against Alabama. Still, Fields' estimable potential suggests the Lions might even have to move up a few spots to get him.) (1-28-21):  https://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/nfl/draft/2021/01/28/nfl-mock-draft-2021-jets-pass-qb-trevor-lawrence-penei-sewell/4286682001/

Detroit Lions take Ohio State QB Justin Fields in Mel Kiper’s first mock draft (1-26-21):  https://www.mlive.com/lions/2021/01/detroit-lions-take-ohio-state-qb-justin-fields-in-mel-kipers-first-mock-draft.html

PFF Palazzolo (7. DETROIT LIONS: QB TREY LANCE, NORTH DAKOTA STATE:  With the news that QB Matthew Stafford will not be returning to Detroit and new head coach Dan Campbell recently signed a six-year contract, the Lions are in full rebuild mode. Lance is the best option for that scenario; he’s as talented as it gets, but time is likely needed given that he has just one full year of experience at the FCS level. Lance graded at 90.7 as a redshirt freshman in 2019 before a mediocre “showcase” game in 2020. He has a cannon and rushing ability to tap into, while the Lions have the time to allow Lance to reach his potential.) (1-25-21):  https://www.pff.com/news/draft-2021-nfl-mock-draft-new-york-jets-qb-zach-wilson-cincinnati-bengals-wr-jamarr-chase

O'Hara (My Pick: LB Micah Parsons, Penn State.:  Listed at 6-3, 246, he has good size for the position. He's another one of the top players who opted out of the 2020 season. Before that, he put together a good resume as a two-year player, with a big 2019 season: 13 games, 109 tackles, 14 tackles for loss, five sacks, five passes defensed and four forced fumbles.  The Lions have had modest results drafting linebackers early in the last four seasons: Jarrad Davis in the first round in 2017 and Jahlani Tavai in the second in 2019.  The Lions might change their luck with Parsons.) (1-25-21):  https://www.detroitlions.com/news/o-hara-s-mock-7-the-first-prediction-parsons-smith-wilson

PFF Galina (7. DETROIT LIONS: DI CHRISTIAN BARMORE, ALABAMA:  Ok, hear me out! New general manager Brad Holmes comes from the Rams, where he played a big role in drafting Aaron Donald. Christian Barmore is the first of a long line of future interior defensive linemen who have caught “Donald Fever” and try to mold their game after him.  Barmore is so nimble for a big man it’s incredible. He showed out on limited snaps in 2019, and while he probably didn’t play at his absolute best throughout the whole regular season, he was back to being his dominant self when the College Football Playoffs rolled around, earning a 91.3 pass-rush grade over the final two games of his championship-winning season. It’s not as if the Lions don’t need pass rush, either.) PFF Treash (7. DETROIT LIONS: WR JAYLEN WADDLE, ALABAMA:  Detroit is in a tough spot with wide receivers Kenny Golladay, Marvin Jones Jr. and Danny Amendola all slated to hit free agency. The good news is that they are in a position to grab one of the most electric wide receivers college football has ever seen.  Waddle missed most of the 2020 season due to a fractured ankle, but the Bama receiver was truly an explosive play waiting to happen in the four games he appeared in. He generated a Power 5-best 4.68 yards per route run, averaged 10.7 yards after the catch, teamed up for a perfect passer rating of 158.3 on his 29 targets and hauled in 329 deep receiving yards. The latter still ranks 13th among all Power 5 receivers despite appearing just four times all year.  Waddle reportedly ran a 4.37 40-yard dash coming out of high school. He is a threat to house it anytime he gets the ball with that speed and explosiveness.) USA Today Middle-Hurst Schwartz (7. Lions — Micah Parsons, LB, PSU:  Where does Detroit start with overhauling a defense that ranked last in yards and points allowed? Given the Lions' modest cap space before addressing wide receiver Kenny Golladay, investing early and often in the draft has to be a priority. Parsons has a strong claim to the title of the draft's most explosive defender, and he's a standout in almost any assignment.) NFL RealGM (11. Detroit Lions: Trey Lance, QB, North Dakota State. If the new regime wants to hedge their bets away from Matthew Stafford long-term, taking a developmental project like Lance here makes sense.
