2023 NFL Draft: Best fits for mid-round QB prospects (Aidan O'Connell excelled as a rhythm passer in Purdue's spread offense under former head coach Jeff Brohm, now Louisville's head coach. He's an accurate passer with nice touch and gets the ball out of his hand quickly. O'Connell's accuracy doesn't decline on rollouts off of play-action. The cons are that he'll force a number of passes and that he sometimes fades away when throwing against pressure. The spread and spacing offense at Purdue allowed O'Connell to digest progressions in halves across the field, allowing him to play the game on easy mode. That's great in college, but he'll be asked to do a lot more reading the field in the NFL. His arm strength is solid, and he projects to be a nice backup in the NFL. Being a 25-year-old rookie is a knock against him given that Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts became the NFL's highest-paid player at 24, three seasons into his NFL career. Potential Fit: Minnesota Vikings - A Shanahan offense disciple is the perfect place for O'Connell to end up. The route concepts and formations are all designed to appear similar, relying on the duplicity in simplicity. This lulls defenses to sleep, allowing a player like O'Connell to pick apart the defense, thanks to a schematic advantage. There's also plenty of play-action, as the Vikings had the fourth-highest play-action rate in the league (19.3% of plays) under first-year head coach Kevin O'Connell. That bodes well for a young quarterback like O'Connell, as route progressions are easier to digest before he unloads the throw. He posted an elite 90.6 passing grade in 2021 but then dipped massively to a 67.5 passing grade in 2022. He recorded 36 big-time throws and 17 turnover-worthy plays in 2021, then 21 big-time throws and 25 turnover-worthy plays in 2022. He is Jameis Winston-esque in that regard — a gunslinger who is fearless when he sees the throw he believes he needs to make. 2023 NFL Draft: Favorite Day 2 player at each position (QUARTERBACK: AIDAN O’CONNELL, PURDUE - We're starting with a heater, I know. O’Connell’s 2022 tape runs hot and cold. His gunslinger style led to some “wow” moments and, at times, some “oh no” moments, even on the same drive. He earned a 70.0 passing grade in 2022 with 20 big-time throws and 24 turnover-worthy plays — Jameis Winston-esque, in that regard. But it is worth noting that O'Connell earned a 90.6 passing grade in 2021. Day 2 and even Day 3 quarterback selections are about preference, both in scheme and what a team is looking for from the player. If they're looking for a solid, steady backup with a high floor who could be a spot starter in a pinch, O’Connell in his current state might not be the one. Lions 2023 NFL draft: A quarterback for every round (4th: Aidan O'Connell, Purdue: O’Connell is one tough cookie. He has proven he can take a pounding and keep on producing accurate throws with impressive velocity. At Purdue, O’Connell was a very effective pocket passer who could thrive when the trains were kept on time. Alas, he struggled when pressured. A lot of the pounding O’Connell took was a function of his deer-in-headlights response to pressure and athletic inability to protect himself when forced to flee the pocket. Pro Day News and Rumors: Purdue’s Aidan O’Connell Drawing Interest From Raiders, Rams, and More? (Purdue’s Aidan O’Connell Stock on the Rise? By my count, all 32 teams from the NFL were on hand for Purdue’s Pro Day. Among the bigger names at the workout were Las Vegas Raiders offensive coordinator Mick Lombardi, Cincinnati Bengals receivers coach Troy Walters, and Tennessee Titans special teams coordinator Craig Aukerman. Aidan O’Connell continued the momentum from one of the best passing workouts at last week’s Combine and looked terrific today. For those counting, he hit on 47 of 50 passes and looked very accurate. Tennessee QB highlights mid-round options if Lions go looking for backup in draft (Purdue’s Aidan O’Connell didn’t get the chance at the Senior Bowl -- he was at the Shrine game -- like some of these names. But his ability in Purdue’s pass-happy offense, not to mention six years in college, should have teams interested in building a competent backup option here. The 6-foot-3 quarterback started the previous two seasons. He completed 71.6% of his 440 attempts in 2021, then watched that figure drop to 64.1% last season. He threw 50 touchdowns to 24 interceptions in two years, though, with more than 3,400 yards each season. 2023 NFL Draft: Prospects who could shine at the scouting combine (Aidan O'Connell, QB, Purdue: As it stands right now, Aiden O’Connell is a day-three prospect. He’s a 6-foot-3 pocket passer who fits the mold of an old-school quarterback. He would rather drop back into the pocket than take off running but will certainly use his legs if he has to. O’Connell has only rushed 16 times this year for 64 yards, but 23 of those yards came after contact. So, he can take a hit! He’s completed 64.1% of his passes this year for 3,490 yards, 22 touchdowns and 13 interceptions. Even though he has thrown his fair share of interceptions in his collegiate career, his accuracy should not be overlooked; and that is what will shine next week at the combine. One of the drills that the quarterbacks must participate in is throwing the route-tree, but the most scrutinized is the ‘slant’. Teams want to see if receivers have to break stride to make the catch. They evaluate how consistent can a quarterback hit the catcher’s chest while running over the middle. This is where O’Connell throws his best ball. Even when taking hits from free blitzers. We shouldn’t expect O’Connell to move up too much considering his deep ball is not a strength. His current QBR is sitting at 57.2. His current rank is #273 according to The Draft Network. Fallout From the 2023 Shrine Bowl: Top Takeaways From Practices and Shrine Bowl Game (The Quarterbacks Failed To Exceed Expectations - The 2023 crop of quarterbacks is interesting because several of the individuals took advantage of 2020’s waiver that allowed them to have an extra year of eligibility. We’re also seeing smaller quarterbacks than ever before. As a result, both the Shrine Game and Senior Bowl group of QBs makes up the oldest and smallest collection of senior passers we’ve ever seen. There was hope that the experience would pay off. Despite having impressive physical tools, Aidan O’Connell, Dorian Thompson-Robinson, Tommy DeVito, and Tanner Morgan each struggled to show out in a meaningful way. It’s not uncommon for these events to struggle producing offenses, but the two teams combined for 24 completions on 56 attempts, 212 yards, and three interceptions. All is not lost for this group, as I think each of these players is draftable on Day 3. However, the opportunity for O’Connell, in particular, to rise to a Day 2 prospect looks gone after not standing out in practice or the game.) It’s also a great example of the two types of prospects I spoke of above because these players have a lot to prove, and for very different reasons. On the East, you have Aidan O’Connell from Purdue. O’Connell was coming off of easily his best season in 2021, and the expectations were high. Unfortunately, he had a wildly inconsistent year that saw his stats dip from the previous season. His completion percentage dropped almost ten percent, his touchdowns were also down, and his turnovers were up. It was a drastically different feel from his junior season and was shocking to see. This year was a prime opportunity for him to become QB1 in this draft class because the entire position was pretty wide open for most of the year, so his statistics dropping was really detrimental to him. This is one gunslinger looking to earn some respect out west in Las Vegas and thus far, O’Connell has come out firing. The most appealing about O’Connell is his attention to detail, you can tell he really puts in the time to do the little things well. He demonstrated the ability to get the defense to jump offsides with his hard count, displayed fundamentally sound footwork and carried out all his fakes. O’Connell is able to work the short-to-intermediate part of the field well because he knows where to go with the football and can zip it in the window faster than a New York minute. 2023 NFL Draft: Brenton Cox Jr., Robert Beal Highlight Shrine Bowl’s Early Commits (Purdue Tandem of Aidan O’Connell and Payne Durham Poised To Impress - Less than two dozen Shrine Bowl acceptances have been announced to this point. But already, three Purdue players have joined the fray. On defense, cornerback Cory Trice was recently announced. But the tandem of Aidan O’Connell and Payne Durham will draw particular attention from teams looking for offensive talent. Together, O’Connell and Durham have forged a prolific combination with the Boilermakers. It was incredibly distinct in the team’s win over ranked Illinois earlier this month, when Durham had seven catches for 70 yards and two scores. 2023 NFL Draft Shrine Bowl Prospect Roundup: Rashee Rice, Charlie Jones Rising (Speaking on some of the more eye-catching performances from the previous week, Galko immediately lands on the Syracuse-Purdue contest. Syracuse ultimately came out on top in a close battle, but Galko was quick to mention two players on the Boilermakers’ offense. “That Aidan O’Connell-to-Charle Jones connection was my favorite part of the weekend.” Galko lauded O’Connell’s poise and confidence, rallying back to give the Boilermakers a chance after throwing a bad interception. 2023 NFL Draft: Week 3 Stock Report (Money Makers - QB Aidan O’Connell, Purdue: O’Connell is incredibly accurate and has perfect timing with his receivers. Monday Morning GM: Evaluating 2023 NFL Draft Quarterbacks From Week 3 (Aidan O’Connell, Purdue (vs. Syracuse) - If not for two highly impressive late-game drives by Sean Clifford to start the year, and this week, Garrett Shrader — Purdue would be 3-0 and likely ranked in the top 15 of the country. Aidan O’Connell wasn’t perfect in this one, including an under-pressure throw that was placed directly into the defender’s chest and led to a pick-six and a 10-point deficit with just over eight minutes left in the game. But O’Connell showcased the maturity, composure, and confidence under pressure to lead two touchdown drives to give his team a lead with under a minute yet. His 55-yard touchdown throw to Charlie Jones (one of three deep ball throws that were perfectly placed from O’Connell to Jones in the second half) coupled with a masterful drive capped off with a 12-yard TD to Payne Durham put his team in position to win after struggling to finish drives early in the game. Alabama's Young stock up in initial QB Stock Watch (Aidan O'Connell, Purdue: Stock Down - O'Connell was a prospect that impressed me during summer scouting but the debut did not reflect what he is capable of accomplishing. He has a slender frame but is really able to drive the ball. The Illinois native had happy feet in the pocket and that contributed to his 50% completion percentage. O'Connell was lucky to escape without any interceptions considering how often he threw into coverage, particularly in the first quarter when a pass went through the hands of Penn State cornerback Joey Porter Jr. He could have done a better job of opening his hips to the target. There are a lot of slants baked into the offense but one throw, in particular, was impressive. The senior threw with good touch in the back of the end zone to wide receiver Charlie Jones towards the end of the third quarter. Top Purdue Prospects to Watch for 2023 NFL Draft (QB Aidan O'Connell: On film, O’Connell plays like an old-school quarterback. He is strictly a pocket passer but O’Connell has incredible accuracy. His ball placement is fantastic and he always hits receivers in the right spot. O’Connell can also throw with touch and his arm strength is good enough for the next level. Right now, O’Connell projects as a solid to high-end backup who could be a spot starter. That kind of value will get a player like O’Connell drafted early on day three.) Quarterbacks to watch for the 2023 NFL draft (Aidan O'Connell, Purdue - Another member of this list who has taken an interesting path to the 2022 season is Purdue’s Aidan O’Connell. He started just one year in high school, throwing 26 touchdowns for Stevenson High School in Lincolnshire, Illinois. As such the scholarship offers were not exactly piling up, and he enrolled at Purdue in 2017 as a walk-on. He did not see the field until 2019, making three starts that year including his first-ever start against Northwestern, where he threw a pair of touchdowns. He was the starter for the Boilermakers when the 2020 campaign began, but suffered a season-ending injury early in the year. O’Connell began last year as the backup, but took over early in the season. He finished the 2021 campaign having completed 71.6% of his passes for 3,712 yards and 28 touchdowns. His accuracy stands out on film.
