Amani Oruwariye turned himself into an underrated breakout star in 2021, but as Mr. Oruwariye accounted for six of the seven interceptions among the team’s cornerbacks, it’s time for an upgrade. You could say that Elam had a “down year” in 2021, but let’s put that in perspective. Over three years with the Gators, he allowed 52 catches on 113 targets for 625 yards, 257 yards after the catch, five touchdowns, six interceptions, and an opponent passer rating of 56.1. We should take his 2021 season (19 catches on 36 targets for 191 yards, 101 yards after the catch, two touchdowns, one interceptions, and an opponent passer rating of 75.1) kin that context. Detroit Lions: WR Drake London - The Lions are keeping their options open with the second-overall pick, and I do not believe they are in love with Aidan Hutchinson or Kayvon Thibodeaux. They badly need a No. 1 receiver, and London could be a Mike Evans-type wideout. If London becomes that good, then he won't have been a reach with the No. 2 pick. When you consider Detriot has two picks other in the low 30s, there isn't a huge drop from Hutchinson and Thibodeaux to the edge rushers at that part of the 2022 NFL Draft; the dropoff at receiver, however, is much bigger. Hence as a whole, the Lions could become a more talented team by going with a receiver first. London hauled in 88 receptions for 1,084 yards and seven touchdowns over his eight-game 2021 before a fractured ankle ended his year. The 6-foot-5, 210-pounder has mismatch size and is a dangerous 50-50 receiver with his ability to win contested catches. After the catch, London is a threat to pick up yardage as he is a physical runner and is tough for defensive backs to get to the ground. With his skill set, London is a real asset in the red zone. London is a bit of a love/hate prospect in speaking with different scouts. The evaluators who don't like him feel that his speed is average at best and that he will struggle to get open enough in the NFL. The scouts who like London feel he is a cross between Keenan Allen, Mike Evans, and Michael Thomas. They say he is a good route-runner, and has some suddenness and feel for his size. They also feel, however, that separating from NFL cornerbacks is going to be a problem for him. London was in a crowded depth chart in 2019 and 2020, but he still showed some intriguing ability. In 2020, he had 33 catches for 502 yards and three touchdowns over six games with Amon-Ra St. Brown as the featured receiver. As a freshman, London caught 39 passes for 567 yards and five touchdowns with St. Brown and Michael Pittman Jr. ahead of London in targets. 32. LB Damone Clark: The Lions need a linebacker to go with Derrick Barnes. Clark was a tackling machine in 2021, ending up as one of with one of the highest totals in the NCAA, and has shot up draft boards. Team sources have been raving about Clark (6-3, 245), saying his skill set is similar to Micah Parsons'. While Parsons is more explosive and violent as a tackler, Clark has better instincts. They think Clark could be a more athletic and more physical version of Zach Cunningham, who led the NFL in tackles early in his career. Clark is a future three-down starter who is a sideline-to-sideline tackling machine and contribute well in coverage. In 2021, Clark recorded 135 tackles, two forced fumbles, 5.5 sacks, one interception and two passes defended. He had 63 tackles in 2020 and 49 in 2019 to go along with 3.5 sacks. The 6-foot-3, 245-pounder possesses excellent size to go along with quickness and athleticism. He could be a riser during the 2022 NFL Draft process. 34. CB Kyler Gordon - The Lions could use more cornerback talent. Gordon recorded 45 tackles, two interceptions and seven passes broken up in 2021. The 6-foot, 195-pounder was a solid corner for the Huskies over the past few seasons. He flashed in 2019 while recording 32 tackles and four pass breakups. With his solid frame and strength, Gordon looks like an outside corner for the NFL. 66. S Jaquan Brisker: Detroit could use more safety talent. Brisker is a talented player with speed, instincts and versatility, plus he is willing to get physical. Brisker collected 43 tackles, two interceptions and four passes broken up in 2021. In 2020, he flashed at times for the Nittany Lions while recording 57 tackles, four passes defended and an interception. He totaled 31 tackles, two interceptions and four passes defended in 2019. Brisker has a tendency to get banged up and gets more attention from trainers than NFL teams like to see. The 6-foot-1, 203-pounder has starting potential and could be a good value pick on Day 2 of the 2022 NFL Draft. 97. G Luke Goedeke - PROJECTED COMPENSATORY PICK: PROJECTED COMPENSATORY PICK: Per team sources, the Lions are likely to get a compensatory pick for losing Kenny Golladay in free agency last year. Detroit has the makings of one of the best offensive lines in the NFL, but the one hole is right guard. Here's an upgrade. Goedeke is a tough interior blocker who has good size and strength. PFN Hodgkinson (2. Detroit Lions: Kayvon Thibodeaux: The lengthy NFL Draft process lends itself to rumor-mongering from “inside sources” with information about elite prospects who aren’t considered elite by the NFL for one reason or another. This year, the prospect who is allegedly slipping down draft boards across the league is Oregon pass rusher Kayvon Thibodeaux. Allegedly, there are questions about his intensity, his size, and how he’s expected to test during the process. For what it’s worth, I’m not buying it. Watching Thibodeaux during the last three seasons for Oregon, I’m not sure how you’d question his athletic ability. An insanely explosive pass rusher who possesses the length to be combative at the point of attack, Thibodeaux is equally adept at getting to the quarterback or stopping the run. The Detroit Lions strike for the Oregon product to answer their pass-rush needs in this 2022 NFL Mock Draft. 32. Detroit Lions (from LAR): Treylon Burks, WR, Arkansas: Despite the emergence of Amon-Ra St. Brown, wide receiver projects to be the biggest need outside of quarterback once the Lions have selected Thibodeaux with the first of their picks in the 2022 NFL Mock Draft. Quarterback is still a possibility here, but with Willis and Howell — two of the QBs they worked with at the Senior Bowl — gone, it seems unlikely. Arkansas wide receiver Treylon Burks gives the Lions a physical, athletic anomaly. Burks can be used in multiple ways to create yardage. As a result, Burks is something of a fantasy football darling, but he belongs in the conversation as one of the best receivers in the class regardless. PFF Gayle (PICK NO. 2: DETROIT LIONS: EDGE KAYVON THIBODEAUX, OREGON - ESPN’s Todd McShay voiced concerns with Thibodeaux’s stock on his podcast First Draft after talking with NFL evaluators at the 2022 Reese’s Senior Bowl. McShay currently has Thibodeaux as the No. 7 overall player in the class and said that multiple people — “at least four different guys” — don’t view him as a lock for No. 1 or No. 2 overall and that he could fall out of the top-five picks in April’s draft. I don’t discredit what McShay has heard and do believe people in the NFL are lower on Thibodeaux than current media consensus, but my understanding is that such beliefs are not a product of his on-field performance or talent. And until there are legit football reasons backing his slide, he remains a lock for No. 2 overall for me. The 6-foot-5, 260-pound Thibodeaux earned a 91.3 PFF pass-rushing grade that ranked fourth among all Power Five edge defenders in 2021, behind only Hutchinson (93.6), South Carolina’s Kingsley Enagbare (92.5) and Oklahoma’s Nik Bonitto (92.5). Thibodeaux is a premier player at a premium position — throw need out the window if he’s available when Detroit is on the clock. PICK NO. 28: DETROIT LIONS (VIA L.A. RAMS): QB Matt Corral - (Big Board Rank: 34): Corral will be in the conversation for top quarterback in the 2022 class after wrapping up his Rebels career with back-to-back 85.0-plus PFF grades (2020 and 2021). He’ll get knocked in the evaluation process for Ole Miss’ RPO-heavy offense and a lack of strong tape when working past his first read, but Corral’s arm talent and athleticism are enough to build on at the next level if paired with an offensive coordinator who can mature his game. Even if Detroit benches or goes as far as to cut veteran quarterback Jared Goff, the team is on the hook for $30 million — the ninth-highest cap hit among NFL quarterbacks. It’s a sunk cost the Lions’ brass willfully signed up for when they received him, two first-round picks and a third-round pick in exchange for Matthew Stafford. That doesn’t mean Detroit has to start Goff and kick the can on their search for a franchise quarterback. Paying him $30 million to ride the pine while swinging the bat on a prospect like Corral is a better use of resources than watching him play Detroit out of the top-end quarterback prospects in 2023 to the tune of four-plus wins in 2022. 34. Draft Tek (2. DE Kayvon Thibodeaux: Perhaps one of the safest places to be in this year's NFL Draft is exactly where the Lions are at #2. With us mocking Alabama's Evan Neal to Jacksonville, Detroit has the luxury of selecting either Kayvon Thibodeaux or Aidan Hutchinson, both being elite edge rushers. It's somewhat unfamiliar territory for the Lions as in many years, they have found themselves in precarious situations regarding draft position. I go back to a few seasons ago with Jeff Okudah taken at #3 in 2020 and T.J. Hockenson at #8 in 2019. Many (including myself) clamored Bob Quinn to consider other options at these draft positions, but given the pick and the field of players available, what's a man to do? I remember vividly calling for Justin Jefferson citing Marvin Jones's age and Kenny Golladay's contract situation in 2020's NFL Draft but instead, Okudah was the selection. What a get that would have been right? We for sure wouldn't be talking about wide receivers! The point being, the Lions (for once) can't really go wrong being in the position they're in currently with the #2 selection. If Jacksonville ends up taking either Thibodeaux or Hutchinson, they can go with the next one available. If Jacksonville does in fact take Neal, the Lions have their pick of the litter. Another consideration is to trade down and get more value since they did lose some value with the Rams pick at #31 or #32, pending their Super Bowl outcome. He's my type of wide receiver. Versatile receiver that can run any route, make any catch, exceptional footwork to fool DBs and get that extra spacing, reliable hands, need I say more? Watching many of his games this year really got me wondering who he reminded me of, who his pro comparison would be. No matter how often I watched him, his sure-handedness, shiftiness, and ability to catch the football deep and short, I just couldn't shake the thought of Golden Tate. Now, I know what you're probably thinking, look at Doug reliving some of the Lions better years, but I assure you it's not like that. David Bell just has that feel to him, that "I'm not going to stop here" mentality. He wants to make the catch and get extra yardage. When he's moving, being hit in stride, he wants to do more damage. If anything, instead of being a G.O.A.T. (as the kids say these days) I want to start calling David Bell the "YAC". You know, for...yards after the....catch. Anyway, David Bell needs to be in a Lions uniform come Draft Day. Make it happen Mr. Holmes. LB Nakobe Dean: One of my favorite defensive players in this draft, Nakobe Dean to Detroit would send me through the roof if Detroit was able to grab him here. What an addition this would be to add more speed, athleticism and instinct to not only the defense, but the linebacker group as a whole. With Alex Anzalone and Jalen Reeves-Maybin both unrestricted free agents, Derrick Barnes will most definitely be asked to fill in more of a role if neither are brought back. The team will need to add a linebacker through the draft or upgrade through free agency. He possesses a thick, powerful frame, with the flexibility of a bendy outside pass rusher. He’s not the level of prospect the Bosas, Chase Young, or Myles Garrett were, but he still has perennial 10-plus-sack potential. After watching teams like the 49ers, Steelers, and Raiders win football games almost solely based on their ability to rush the passer, I think more teams will attempt to stock up on quarterback killers. So although Brad Holmes and Dan Campbell spent significant assets on the defensive line last season, it makes sense to continue to build there. Thibodeaux, Trey Flowers, Julian Okwara, and Romeo Okwara — when the latter is healthy again — will be a formidable foursome. 32. Detroit Lions: QB Sam Howell: Sam Howell must improve his footwork before being a successful quarterback at the next level, but he played some really good football at the Senior Bowl. He was arguably the most consistent passer in Mobile, and it was confirmed to some that the player we saw in 2020 was the player we could expect at the next level. He was quick to go through his reads, and his decisiveness was stark in comparison to the rest of the QBs at the Senior Bowl learning to work through a new offense. However, many have bemoaned the Oregon edge player’s lack of production this season compared to other prospects in this class. Let’s clear up a few negative misconceptions. First, Thibodeaux wasn’t 100% healthy this season. Secondly, a lot of his work wasn’t reflected in the box score. The Oregon standout possesses superior athleticism, excellent length, and standout technical ability as a prospect. He’s as adept at stopping the run as he is at rushing the passer. For a Detroit Lions team that needs to make improvements all over the roster, taking one of the top prospects is a no-brainer, slam-dunk move. 28) Detroit Lions (from LA Rams): Treylon Burks, WR, Arkansas: The Lions’ second pick in the first round is one of the most intriguing and hotly anticipated selections in the 2022 NFL Draft. Could they strike for a quarterback here? While I wouldn’t rule it out, the most likely scenario is that they ride Jared Goff under center, target a game-changing pass catcher in April, and wait until next year’s class to find a new QB. As a result, they grab Arkansas WR Treylon Burks to pair with outstanding rookie Amon-Ra St. Brown.
