Week 18 Predictions

PFN Rolfe (Minnesota Vikings at Detroit Lions (-2.5):  We’ll have to wait all weekend for Week 18’s showpiece event, but boy, should it be worth it. The last time the Lions and Vikings met, the game was won on a field goal for Detroit in the final minute after a ding-dong contest that swung one way and the other.  The metrics peg these two sides as relatively even, with the Lions having a slight advantage overall. Both have top-five defenses on the season, with the Vikings narrowly ahead. Detroit’s offense ranks top two entering Monday Night Football, while Minnesota sits 10th. The Lions have also played the 12th-toughest schedule compared to the 21st for the Vikings.  All told, this line is right where I would have put it, with the Lions as favorites by a field goal. Yet, when you start playing out scenarios, more scenarios favor Detroit.  In a tight game simulation, it is essentially 50-50, but if you’re projecting a blowout, that leans heavily toward the Lions. With home-field advantage, you could make the case that this line should be Lions -3.5 to -5, so for that reason, I lean toward Detroit.  The last meeting between the two saw 60 points scored, but the total is already high at 52. Two of the Vikings’ last six games have gone over that, and their defense has allowed over 20 points in five of their last six. Three of the Lions’ last six have gone over 52, and their defense has allowed over 20 points in three of their last five.  A teaser with the Vikings +8.5 and the total going over 46 might be the best way to attack this game. CBS Breech (Minnesota (14-2) at Detroit (14-2) - Sunday, 8:20 p.m. ET (NBC).  This will be the final game of the 2024 regular-season and the NFL is definitely saving its best for last. This game will mark the first time in 31 years that the top seed in a conference will be decided in the final week of the season in a winner-take-all battle. This will also mark the first time in NFL history that two teams with 13 wins or more will face off in a regular-season game.  There will be a lot on the line in this game with the winner taking home the NFC North title and the No. 1 overall seed in the NFC while the loser will be stuck getting the fifth seed in the NFC. That means the winner will get a bye in the opening round of the playoffs while the loser will be forced to hit the road for the wild-card round.  What's the difference between getting a one-seed and a five-seed? Glad you asked. There was no fifth-seed in the playoffs until 1978 and since then, they've almost never made it to the Super Bowl.  Basically, if you lose this game, you don't just lose this game, your chances of getting to the Super Bowl also take a major hit, which is not what you want when you're a team that's never won the Super Bowl before (In related news, the Vikings and Lions have never won the Super Bowl before).  I feel like this is going to come down to who plays better out of Jared Goff and Sam Darnold. That might seem obvious, but all you have to do is look at each's team passing defense to realize why the QB battle will probably decide the game. The Lions are surrendering 250.4 yards per game through the air, which is the second-worst number in the NFL. But Vikings fans, don't laugh, because your team isn't much better: The Vikings have given up an average of 243.6 yards per game, which is the fifth-worst in the NFL.   So you have the two of the worst passing defenses and they'll be going up against two quarterbacks who both rank in the top-five for passing yards per game this year (Goff ranks second overall with 274.9 yards per game while Darnold ranks fifth overall with 259.6 yards per game). These two quarterbacks went a combined 7-17-1 in 2020, and somehow, just four years later, they're going to be duking it out for the top seed in the NFC. Darnold has never played in a game of this magnitude, so I'm going to take they guy who's won multiple big games in his career and that's Goff.  The pick: Lions 30-23 over Vikings):  https://www.cbssports.com/nfl/news/nfl-week-18-picks-and-score-predictions-bengals-beat-steelers-to-keep-playoff-hopes-alive-lions-edge-vikings/

This game should be a thriller, and the Vikings have mastered close games this season with Kevin O'Connell. Minnesota is 9-1 in one-score games this season, but the lone loss is to Detroit. CBS Sullivan (Vikings at Lions:  For a regular-season game, you couldn't make the stakes any higher. Not only is the NFC North division on the line, but the Vikings and Lions will be squaring off in a game where the winner will clinch the No. 1 seed in the conference. Coming into the year, the Lions were the darlings of the NFL-viewing public and were among the favorites to win Super Bowl LIX. While that largely remains the case, the Vikings -- with Sam Darnold at the helm -- have crashed the party. I expect them to continue this ascent by rolling into Ford Field and pulling off the upset.  In what I viewed as a head-scratching decision, Dan Campbell decided to play all of his starters Monday night against the 49ers. While they were able to get the win, it was a meaningless game for their ultimate goal of winning the division and attaining the No. 1 seed. Now, Detroit will be gearing up for this massive game on a short week after playing on the West Coast. CBS Dajani (Minnesota Vikings at Detroit Lions (-3):  The game of the week! Ben Johnson's offense looks incredible, but this Lions defense is worth worrying about. Detroit allowed 7.4 yards per play in December. That's the most yards per play any team has allowed in the month of December in the Super Bowl era. The Lions ranked last or second-to-last in points per game (32.5), yards allowed per game (428.5) and passing yards allowed per game (321) last month. It's tough, because I think the Lions would be my Super Bowl pick if we were playing "Madden" and injuries were turned off. Detroit has five Week 1 defensive starters on injured reserve, which would tie the most by any team in a playoff game since 1970. 2025 Mock Draft Round Up #6

PFN Xie (31. Shemar Stewart, DT, Texas A&M:  The injury-plagued Detroit Lions defense is better than their current form indicates. However, one thing that’s true even when healthy is that the Lions need more pass-rushing help. Aidan Hutchinson accounted for the highest share of his team’s pressures for any player in the NFL prior to breaking his leg.  Shemar Stewart is a moldable player whose athleticism and movement ability for his size project a very high ceiling. Stewart may not be ready for heavy snaps as a rookie, but that’s fine with Alim McNeill and D.J. Reader both under contract for 2025.  Eventually, Stewart could develop into the type of three-down freak that McNeill has become. Walter football Charlie (31. Jalon Walker, OLB, Georgia:  The Lions could use more rotational edge rush talent and defensive line depth. Plus, Za’Darius Smith, and Josh Paschal will be in the last year of their contracts in 2025. Here’s a rusher to go with Aidan Hutchinson, Smith, and Paschal.  Walker is a dangerous edge rusher for the Bulldogs, showing speed and athleticism off the edge. In 2024, he has 58 tackles with 6.5 sacks and one pass broken up. Walker had five sacks as a rotational player in 2023. The 6-foot-2, 245-pounder is too undersized to be a base edge rusher in the NFL, so he will have to be a linebacker that rotates to rush off the edge in the sub package.  63. Deion Burks, WR, Oklahoma:  The Lions could use a third receiver to go with Amon-Ra St. Brown and Jameson Williams.  Burks (5-9 190) has playmaking ability and upside for the NFL. In 2024, he had 31 receptions for 245 yards and three touchdowns. In 2023, Burks caught 47 passes for 629 yards and seven touchdowns with Purdue. Burks is a fast and dynamic receiver. PFN Infante (32. Tyler Booker, G, Alabama:  An offensive lineman for the Lions? What? There’s no denying how good Detroit’s offensive line is, but Kevin Zeitler (who turns 35 in March) isn’t a long-term answer at right guard.  Tyler Booker is a bit raw regarding his hand placement and spatial awareness, but his physical traits are undeniable. He’s a monster of a man with impressive power that’s proportioned well throughout his frame. He moves quite well for such a big guy, too. If there’s any organization that could maximize Booker’s physical talents, it’s the Lions.  64. Kyle Kennard, EDGE, South Carolina:  When healthy, Aidan Hutchinson should form a tremendous edge-rushing duo with Za’Darius Smith. The latter is more of a stopgap starter than a long-term option, though, so adding a young edge rusher in the 2025 NFL Draft should be a priority for the Lions.  South Carolina’s defensive line is full of athletic freaks, and Kyle Kennard might end up being the highest-drafted of the bunch out of those eligible for this year’s class.  Kennard is an athletic edge rusher with quick and active hands and the production to match. Savaiinaea is a tackle who can kick inside to guard or spend his first year as a Dan Skipper replacement as the team’s swing tackle/jumbo package tight end who eventually catches a touchdown pass to make the score Lions 43, Bears 10 next November.  Savaiinaea’s pass blocking is ahead of his run game, which may diminish his prospects in the eyes of a roster with one of the league’s top running back tandems. Still, his versatility and athleticism may make him too tempting to pass up. With quick feet, solid lateral movement and a mean streak he’s otherwise a great fit for Dan Campbell.) Additionally, having Smith on the roster will allow the defensive staff to bring Princely Umanmielen along at his own pace as a rotational player, which will likely be necessary.  Umanmielen easily produced his best tape in 2025, but it took years of patiently waiting for this day to come, and it came in the waning hours of his college career. There could also be a relatively steep curve at the next level despite his length, bend, and explosiveness.) Also, right guard Kevin Zeitler is nearly 35 years old and a pending free agent, and Detroit could also add another reliable backup given how many injuries center Frank Ragnow has battled. Jonah Savaiinaea is a college tackle who projects better at guard at the NFL level. While he has impressive athleticism, footwork, and length, his unnerving tendency to overset and lose the arc to rushers with more advanced outside rush moves suggests he would be best served on the interior at the NFL level. He has a powerful frame with a sturdy anchor, and he maximizes that strength with low pads and a low center of gravity. Marcus Davenport suffered a season-ending triceps injury in Week 3 and is on an expiring deal.  Levi Onwuzurike has split time between DT and DE to account for Huthcinson’s absence, but he’s also a pending free agent. Acquiring Za’Darius Smith from the Browns was smart, but he’ll be 33 years old next season and in the final year of his contract.  As a proactive athlete, it’s unfair to have Shemar Stewart’s blend of length, explosiveness, and density. He’s a 6’6”, 290-pound lab-built creation with untapped potential as a pass rusher and an athletic profile we haven’t seen since J.J. Watt. That’s not to say he’ll be Watt; that would be reckless. Brian Flores’ defense hasn’t had much luck with getting home on play action either, generating just the 22nd-best sack rate.  In the first matchup between these powerhouses, the Lions ran play action 11 times to the tune of 11 yards per play and a 54.5% success rate. NFL Fact or Fiction: Vikings Need Home-Field Advantage More Than Lions (Vikings need home-field advantage more than Lions  - Manzano’s view: Fact.  This is a tough one for multiple reasons. Both teams have two of the best home-field advantages in the NFL and both have been road warriors this season.  The Lions posted an 8–0 record after defeating the San Francisco 49ers Monday night, the longest road winning streak in franchise history. The Vikings are 6–1 and still have one road game left this season, the massive winner-take-all Week 18 matchup in Detroit.  If the Vikings win in Detroit, then maybe that’s our answer for this debate. Minnesota has a complete roster and depth at various positions to win in different ways. But regardless of the outcome of the NFC North showdown, the Lions get the edge because you can’t simulate postseason experience.  Detroit lost in heartbreaking fashion in San Francisco during last season’s NFC title game. Coach Dan Campbell and his Lions players can now turn their mistakes from last year’s playoff run into learning lessons for this year’s quest to the Super Bowl.  The Vikings recently played in a playoff game in the 2022 campaign, coach Kevin O’Connell’s first season, but that was a home loss against the New York Giants during the wild-card round. Justin Jefferson, Jordan Addison, T.J. Hockenson and many other key players have never experienced a road playoff game. Sam Darnold, the Vikings’ breakout quarterback, has never started a playoff game in his career.  All this is nitpicking, but because I’m twisting my own arm, I’m siding with the well-seasoned Lions for this one.   Dan Campbell was wrong to play his starters vs. 49ers - Manzano’s view: Fiction.  ESPN analyst Troy Aikman couldn’t understand why Campbell played his starters against the 49ers, calling the Lions “a tired team” because they had their bye week way back in Week 5.  Initially, I agreed with Aikman’s take because the Lions also have a handful of injured players on the defensive side and some rest could have benefited them before the Sunday night battle with the Vikings. But the more I thought about it, the more I realized that the Lions had plenty to play for in Santa Clara despite that game not having any playoff implications. For starters, the Lions gained a positive psyche by beating the 49ers and getting some revenge for last season’s NFL title game. Yes, these 49ers aren’t the same team—the reigning NFC champions couldn’t overcome injuries and fatigue—but they still had plenty of star players on the field who were willing to test the Lions before the postseason.  The Lions’ elite offense dropped 40 points against the 49ers and now appears ready to go against the Vikings’ stout defense. Also, it didn’t hurt that the Lions’ backup defenders filling in for starters gained more playing experience before the massive divisional showdown. It’s not like rest would have brought back edge rusher Aidan Hutchinson, defensive tackle Alim McNeill and running back David Montgomery. Hutchinson and Montgomery still have a chance of returning, but that’s not a possibility for another few weeks. Also, are we surprised that Campbell didn’t step off the gas pedal? He rarely takes the safe approach and his players love him for it. Campbell told his players they could rest once they clinched the No. 1 seed.
