Detroit ranked dead last in adjusted games lost on defense last season, and only the Cardinals had more injuries overall.  The Lions' schedule ranks 27th in the league by the average projected DVOA of their opponents; the other three teams in the NFC North all have schedules ranked 18th or harder. NFC North win totals: Vegas wrong about Vikings, too high on Packers (Detroit Lions: Over/Under 10.5 (-110) - Here's a fun fact: This is the third straight season the Lions have had a win total of 10.5. They crushed that number in 2024 by going 15-2, but fell short last year, finishing 9-8.  I wasn't surprised to see the Lions take a major step back without Ben Johnson and Aaron Glenn. It was clear those were elite coordinators who got the most out of their players, but injuries also played a major role in the regression. CBS Sports Research notes there were 31 missed games among Week 1 starters in the secondary. So 2025 could prove to be an anomaly.  The Lions have plenty going for them. Quarterback Jared Goff has led the NFL in passing yards and passing touchdowns over the past four seasons. Running back Jahmyr Gibbs has scored more touchdowns in his first three seasons than any player in NFL history. Amon-Ra St. Brown, Jameson Williams and Sam LaPorta provide a great supporting cast.  Detroit traded running back David Montgomery to Houston, but I think Isiah Pacheco is going to play a fun role in this offense with his maniacal running style. Defensively, Aidan Hutchinson is an elite pass rusher, Jack Campbell was one of the best linebackers in football last year and cashed in on a lucrative deal, and Brian Branch, Kerby Joseph, DJ Reed and Roger McCreary can handle the weapons in the NFC North if they stay healthy.  It's important to note that the Lions have the sixth-easiest schedule in the NFL this season. Both teams can be dangerous and have good, experienced quarterbacks. The Lions are loaded on offense, assuming they’ve fixed their offensive line. They just need their defense to play better. And the Packers are strong on both sides of the ball, assuming they’re not hurt by the loss of defensive coordinator Jeff Hafley. Ranking top 8 candidates (7.  Detroit Lions:  It was somewhat lost in Detroit’s collapse late last year, but the Lions started 5-2 and looked like they were bound for a third straight playoff appearance. They are now tied for the NFL’s fourth-longest active streak of consecutive winning seasons (four).  I’m expecting the bad taste in their mouths from the way last season ended to fuel a heightened sense of urgency in a prideful group. Yes, the NFC North remains tough, but overall, the Lions’ schedule is one of the most favorable in the league, with only two true road games against teams that won a playoff game last season. They catch a huge break by missing all of the NFC West heavyweights in the regular season -- the Cardinals are the only team they play from the division.  While they wouldn’t go head-to-head unless they meet in the postseason, it’s worth noting that in the two years since Mike Macdonald took over as head coach, the Seahawks have allowed 40-plus points to only one team -- the Lions, in a 42-29 home win for Detroit on a Monday night in Week 4 of the 2024 season. It’s going to take a better performance from a reworked offensive line for peak Jared Goff to return. There are big changes on the offensive line, with Penei Sewell flipping from right to left tackle. They also have newcomers in center Cade Mays and rookie right tackle Blake Miller. The schedule closes with a nasty stretch, with three division games on the road in the final four weeks of the season. If they don't stockpile wins early, they'll need a very strong finish in cold conditions to stay in contention.
