Detroit Lions Princely Umanmielen, EDGE, Ole Miss: Even with Za’Darius Smith still under contract in 2025, it’s clear that the Detroit Lions could use a long-term solution opposite of Aidan Hutchinson. Additionally, having Smith on the roster will allow the defensive staff to bring Princely Umanmielen along at his own pace as a rotational player, which will likely be necessary.  Umanmielen easily produced his best tape in 2025, but it took years of patiently waiting for this day to come, and it came in the waning hours of his college career. There could also be a relatively steep curve at the next level despite his length, bend, and explosiveness.) Walter football Charlie (31. Jalon Walker, OLB, Georgia:  The Lions could use more rotational edge rush talent and defensive line depth. Plus, Za’Darius Smith, and Josh Paschal will be in the last year of their contracts in 2025. Here’s a rusher to go with Aidan Hutchinson, Smith, and Paschal.  Walker is a dangerous edge rusher for the Bulldogs, showing speed and athleticism off the edge. In 2024, he has 58 tackles with 6.5 sacks and one pass broken up. Walker had five sacks as a rotational player in 2023. The 6-foot-2, 245-pounder is too undersized to be a base edge rusher in the NFL, so he will have to be a linebacker that rotates to rush off the edge in the sub package.  64. OG Donovan Jackson:  The Lions could use some youth at guard and Kevin Zeitler is entering free agency.  The 6-foot-4, 300-pound Jackson has been a tough blocker for the Buckeyes over the past few seasons. He is reliable to open holes in the ground game and does a steady job of protecting his quarterback. Jackson shows good enough feet and athleticism to handle speed rushers with the strength in his base to anchor against bull rushes. Jackson looks like a safe pick to turn into a solid pro starter.) Yahoo Tice/McDonald (31. Jonah Savaiinaea, OG, Arizona:  A team built through the trenches is exactly where my eyes went to to keep the good times rolling in Detroit. The Lions have remained one of the best offenses in the NFL despite signing new guards this offseason. The Lions keep the assembly line going with Savaiinaea, a guard who has a good thick build and plays consistently balanced. Savaiinaea is smart and knows how to use his hands. He plays right tackle for Arizona, but I like him best on the inside at the next level.) Draft Tek (31. DE Kyle Kennard:  The Bills seem to be pushing toward the front of the AFC pack with another three-plus-touchdown win over the recent Super Bowl favorite 49ers. Sure, the 'Niners have fallen off as of late, but this was the Bills fourth win of 21+ points in 2024. The Bills look dominant on the offensive side of the ball as the running game has truly clicked with the new-look offensive line. Joe Brady has done a great job of mirroring the run-game in play action and read-option looks which keep the defense guessing and open up second-level passing plays.While the Amari Cooper to Josh Allen hook-and-ladder was amazing, I am more confident in this team's ability to find a groove and dictate terms to opponents.  Defensively, it's clear that Sean McDermott is fine giving up chunk plays vs the run. He's basically saying, 'If you can keep up with our offense on the ground, go ahead.' While this defense works against many opponents, I do get nervous about playing teams like the Ravens and Lions in the playoffs. Getting DT Dwayne Carter back may help against the run, but I wouldn't say I'm nearly as confident in the defense as I am the offense. Oh and by the way...a certain guy named 'Hyde' is back. In PFN’s offensive line metrics, the Lions rank 21st over the past four weeks and could be fading at the worst possible time. Also, right guard Kevin Zeitler is nearly 35 years old and a pending free agent, and Detroit could also add another reliable backup given how many injuries center Frank Ragnow has battled. Jonah Savaiinaea is a college tackle who projects better at guard at the NFL level. While he has impressive athleticism, footwork, and length, his unnerving tendency to overset and lose the arc to rushers with more advanced outside rush moves suggests he would be best served on the interior at the NFL level. He has a powerful frame with a sturdy anchor, and he maximizes that strength with low pads and a low center of gravity. Tyler Booker, OG, Alabama:  Detroit lost Jonah Jackson last spring, and it remains to be seen how much longer Frank Ragnow will strap up. Tyler Booker isn't a sexy pick, but he projects as a contributor to boost both phases of Detroit's high-flying offense and may turn out to be one of the first round's biggest hits should all come to fruition. PFN Infante (32. Tyler Booker, G, Alabama:  An offensive lineman for the Lions? What? There’s no denying how good Detroit’s offensive line is, but Kevin Zeitler (who turns 35 in March) isn’t a long-term answer at right guard.  Tyler Booker is a bit raw regarding his hand placement and spatial awareness, but his physical traits are undeniable. He’s a monster of a man with impressive power that’s proportioned well throughout his frame. He moves quite well for such a big guy, too. If there’s any organization that could maximize Booker’s physical talents, it’s the Lions.  64. Kyle Kennard, EDGE, South Carolina:  When healthy, Aidan Hutchinson should form a tremendous edge-rushing duo with Za’Darius Smith. The latter is more of a stopgap starter than a long-term option, though, so adding a young edge rusher in the 2025 NFL Draft should be a priority for the Lions.  South Carolina’s defensive line is full of athletic freaks, and Kyle Kennard might end up being the highest-drafted of the bunch out of those eligible for this year’s class.  Kennard is an athletic edge rusher with quick and active hands and the production to match. His aggressive bull-rush technique allows him to swiftly collapse the pocket, pressuring quarterbacks into making quick decisions.  While his primary strength is stopping the run, Grant’s toolkit and technique suggests he has the potential to develop into an effective NFL pass rusher.) With Aidan Hutchinson being out, it is becoming more obvious that they need to draft another guy. Lions Biggest needs: Edge, WR, CB - The pick: Landon Jackson, Edge, Arkansas.  The Lions are winners of 11 consecutive games, and losing star pass rusher Aidan Hutchinson to a season-ending leg injury hasn’t derailed Detroit’s immediate success. However, the Lions need another piece opposite Hutchinson, and the 6'7", 280-pound Jackson makes plenty of sense. His frame, physicality and consistent production over the past three seasons at Arkansas have him firmly in the first-round mix. He's an unrepentant bully on tape who could create so many opportunities for others on the Lions front with his ability to push the pocket.) PFN Gosling (32. Shemar Stewart, EDGE, Texas A&M:  Aidan Hutchinson was leading the NFL in sacks and pressure rate when he fractured his tibia and fibula in Week 6. While he will be ready for the 2025 campaign, the Lions have to add more help around the former No. 2 overall pick. Marcus Davenport suffered a season-ending triceps injury in Week 3 and is on an expiring deal.  Levi Onwuzurike has split time between DT and DE to account for Huthcinson’s absence, but he’s also a pending free agent. Acquiring Za’Darius Smith from the Browns was smart, but he’ll be 33 years old next season and in the final year of his contract.  As a proactive athlete, it’s unfair to have Shemar Stewart’s blend of length, explosiveness, and density. He’s a 6’6”, 290-pound lab-built creation with untapped potential as a pass rusher and an athletic profile we haven’t seen since J.J. Watt. That’s not to say he’ll be Watt; that would be reckless. But he converts speed to power at an outstanding rate, and that is as translatable to the NFL level as pure juice and bend are.  He also provides interior alignment versatility, and he’s even no stranger to dropping into coverage.) A three-time state champion in high school and a standout at FCS powerhouse North Dakota State, Zabel plays tackle but likely projects to move inside, similar to Graham Barton. NFL Offensive Line Rankings 2024: Insights Into All 32 OLs Entering Week 17 (10. Detroit Lions Grade: 82.3 (B-).  The Detroit Lions offensive line has many impressive elements, and it certainly looks like a truly dominant unit at times on film. Yet, the metrics suggest that this isn’t the top-five unit that many consider it to be.  A big bounce-back performance against the Chicago Bears in Week 16 stopped a downward spiral that had seen Detroit post grades of a D+ or below in the previous two games.  Ranking ninth is certainly no slight on this unit; it’s very much respectable and part of a good team. 2024 NFL Defense Rankings: Insights on the Rising Packers and Ravens, Struggling Bills and Chargers, and More (4. Detroit Lions:  The massive spate of injuries to the Detroit Lions defense will remain the team’s biggest question mark heading into the playoffs. But for at least one week, the Lion’s defense got some respite against the hopeless Chicago Bears offense, bumping them up one spot in the post-Week 16 rankings.  The Lions posted a 78.9 (C+) grade, finishing in the top five overall for Week 16. It represents a huge bounceback from the prior three weeks, when Detroit finished 22nd, 14th, and 31st overall.  A week after posting their worst rushing success rate (45.2%) and EPA per rush (-0.27) of the season against the Buffalo Bills, the Lions rebounded in a big way vs. the Bears. Detroit had an 80.0% success rate and averaged 0.34 EPA per play in run defense, both of which ranked third-best for the Lions this season.  Alim McNeill’s season-ending torn ACL still feels like a major concern for the run defense when it faces actual competent offenses. 2024 NFL QB Rankings: Insights Behind Patrick Mahomes, Lamar Jackson, C.J. Stroud, and Others (2. Jared Goff, Detroit Lions - Grade: A-.  Score: 92.8.  Jared Goff continues to impress with his consistency, as he added his eighth game of the season graded as a B- or above in Week 16. Goff’s numbers against the Bears were impressive across the board, finishing with a 0.32 EPA/DB, positive EPA numbers both from a clean pocket and when pressured, and 10.3 nYPA. His clutch numbers were really the only thing that let him down, but it was still a solid week.  Goff is second in the league in EPA/DB from a clean pocket (0.50) but 12th when pressured (-0.22 EPA/DB). His third-down conversion rate of 43.3% ranks eighth, and his 3.0 TD/INT ranks 10th, leaving some further room for improvement.  Goff has been on a solid run in recent weeks.
