Pros and Cons of Detroit Lions Trading For Bengals Cornerback:  https://www.si.com/nfl/lions/onsi/news/pros-cons-detroit-lions-trading-for-bengals-cornerback

Dolphins coach Mike McDaniel is on the hot seat after his team's 1-6 start to the season (Detroit Lions
From Michael Griffey (@Mike__Griffey): Do you see the Lions making any trades at the deadline? Which players would they be interested in?  Michael, I think it’s logical to assume they’ll be looking for a pass rusher, like they were last year, to put opposite Aidan Hutchinson. So the two in Miami could be of interest, if you’re willing to take on money, or maybe Johnson if the Jets show willingness to part with him.):  https://www.si.com/nfl/albert-breer-mailbag-two-reasons-to-fire-dolphins-coach-mike-mcdaniel

Biggest Need for 17 Playoff Contenders Ahead of the NFL Trade Deadline:  https://www.si.com/collectibles/very-exclusive-2024-panini-eminence-football-release

The best and worst NFL offseasons ... as of Week 8: Barnwell stacks all 32 teams into seven tiers (Slightly below expectations.  Detroit Lions - Highlights: Re-signing Edge Al-Quadin Muhammad (one year, $1.4 million), drafting second-round G Tate Ratledge.  Disappointments: Drafting first-round DT Tyleik Williams, re-signing Edge Marcus Davenport (one year, $2.5 million).  The Lions didn't make many dramatic changes this offseason. Their big addition was cornerback D.J. Reed, who was off to a great start before suffering a hamstring injury and hitting injured reserve, which leaves him somewhere between these two poles. The acquire-in-bulk strategy across from Aidan Hutchinson on the defensive line has had mixed results, too; Muhammad has been a solid starting edge rusher, even if his five sacks and 10 knockdowns might overstate the 30-year-old's impact.  The oft-injured Davenport, on the other hand, lasted two games before returning to injured reserve for the third consecutive season. Williams has had a quiet start to his debut campaign, and the first-rounder saw his role in the rotation diminish after the return of Alim McNeill on Monday night against the Buccaneers. And while Ratledge has struggled with quick NFL defensive linemen at times, he has already become a valuable part of the interior for the Lions; his initial double-team and ability to seal off Tampa Bay linebacker Lavonte David at the second level sprung Jahmyr Gibbs on his 78-yard touchdown run against the Bucs earlier this week.):  https://www.espn.com/nfl/story/_/id/46683459/2025-nfl-offseason-tiers-32-teams-best-worst-signings-trades-draft-barnwell

2025 NFL defensive line rankings ahead of Week 8: Houston Texans pass rush is becoming formidable (Week 7 Highlights - Most pressures: Indianapolis Colts & Detroit Lions:  The Colts and Lions defensive lines dominated in Week 7, each recording 33 pressures to help power their teams to victory.  DeForest Buckner led the Colts with nine pressures and an 84.7 pass-rush grade. Kwity Paye added eight pressures, while Laiatu Latu contributed seven. All three earned pass-rush win rates of 20% or better and combined for seven quarterback hits and three sacks.  Aidan Hutchinson continued his dominant stretch, pacing Detroit with 12 pressures and a 26.5% pass-rush win rate. Al-Quadin Muhammad added eight pressures and is in the midst of a career year with a 76.4 pass-rush grade. Alim McNeill returned to action for the first time this season and produced five pressures.):  https://www.pff.com/news/nfl-defensive-line-rankings-ahead-of-week-8-houston-texans-pass-rush-is-becoming-formidable

QB Power Rankings: Patriots' Drake Maye soars again (3. Jared Goff Detroit Lions QB:  Surgical is the best way to describe Goff. The guy can be rushed with elite pressure, but he's now on pace for his third straight 30-touchdown season in Detroit. The Lions are a powerhouse in part because of his resilient precision.):  https://www.cbssports.com/nfl/news/week-8-nfl-qb-power-rankings-patriots-drake-maye/

Buy, sell or hold? What every NFL team should do (Holders - Detroit could maybe look to add in the secondary, but that may not be necessary after a dominating day in Week 7 against the Buccaneers.):  https://www.cbssports.com/nfl/news/nfl-trade-deadline-2025-buy-sell-hold-teams/

NFL QB rankings, Week 8: Drake Maye enters top five; Jaxson Dart climbs past Jayden Daniels (TIER 3 - 11.  Jared Goff - 2025 stats: 7 games | 74.9 pct | 1631 pass yds | 8.0 ypa | 15 pass TDs | 3 INTs | 23 rush yds | 0 rush TDs | 3 fumbles.  The Buccaneers mixed up their pressure looks enough to force Jared Goff out of his comfort zone, a reality obscured by Jahmyr Gibbs' fantastic Monday night. Goff was nowhere near his best against Tampa Bay, accounting for two turnovers, but he still did enough to help the Lions grab an early lead and hold on to it.):  https://www.nfl.com/news/nfl-qb-rankings-index-week-8-2025-nfl-season

NFL pass-rusher rankings ahead of Week 8 (Week 7 Highlights - Most Pressures: Aidan Hutchinson, Detroit Lions.  Hutchinson’s 12 pressures in the Lions' Monday Night Football victory over the Buccaneers were the most for any player in Week 7 and the second-highest total of his career (15 against Seahawks last season).  Season Highlights - Most Pressures: Aidan Hutchinson, Detroit Lions.  Coming off a dominant 12-pressure performance against the Buccaneers, Hutchinson is now up to 48 pressures through Week 7 — 10 more than the next closest player (Jared Verse with 38).):  https://www.pff.com/news/nfl-pass-rusher-rankings-week-8-2025

QB Rankings:

QB Stock Market Week 8: Patrick Mahomes Is Back. Bo Nix Is Captain Comeback (7. Jared Goff Previously ranked: 4.  Jared Goff is a perfect example of why being a "game manager" isn’t a bad thing.   Sure, he may be a bit scheme-dependent and unable to truly carry an offense. But with the right personnel and coaching around him — like he’s had in Detroit the past several years — he’s as deadly as any passer on the planet. His 74.9% completion rate this season ranks second in the NFL.  He’s perfectly fine managing a game, too, like he did Monday night, when running back Jahmyr Gibbs (218 scrimmage yards) and the Lions’ defense did the heavy lifting against Tampa Bay. Goff had some miscues, including two turnovers and overthrowing rookie receiver Isaac TeSlaa on a fourth-and-2 in the end zone in the first half, but made the plays he needed to make.  Monday was one of Goff’s worst performances of the season, but it was still respectable in totality — 20-for-29 for 241 yards and a touchdown with a 91.3 passer rating, plus the two giveaways. "Bad" performances for Goff aren’t the lows they once were in his days with the Rams.  Entering Week 8, Goff leads the NFL with a 116.1 passer rating.):  https://www.foxsports.com/stories/nfl/qb-stock-market-week-8-patrick-mahomes-back-bo-nix-captain-comeback

Week 8 Power Rankings

ESPN (1. Detroit Lions (5-2) - Week 7 result: Beat the Buccaneers 24-9.  Week 7 ranking: 2.  Unsung nonstarter/role player: WR Isaac TeSlaa.  The rookie has received limited snaps playing behind wide receivers Amon-Ra St. Brown, Jameson Williams and Kalif Raymond, but TeSlaa has produced some highlight-reel plays when given opportunities. A native of Hudsonville, Michigan, he has logged only three receptions for 54 yards, though two of those receptions were TDs. The first was a spectacular one-handed grab in the season opener at Green Bay. His second career catch was another one-hander from quarterback Jared Goff against Chicago in Week 2. During the preseason, TeSlaa also logged three receiving touchdowns and is emerging as a fan favorite. -- Eric Woodyard):  https://www.espn.com/nfl/story/_/id/46660009/nfl-week-8-power-rankings-poll-32-teams-2025-unsung-nonstarters-role-players

Fox sports (1. Detroit Lions - Previously ranked: 2.  Super Bowl odds: +650. The Lions sure bounced back nicely from their loss in Kansas City with a win over the Bucs. They aren’t perfect, but they can do it all and may be the most complete team in the NFL):  https://www.foxsports.com/stories/nfl/2025-nfl-power-rankings-week-8

NFL.com (1.  Detroit Lions:  Detroit’s undermanned secondary stepped up in a massive way in Monday’s statement victory over Tampa Bay. The home team entered the night alarmingly shorthanded in the defensive backfield, and then Rock Ya-Sin had to miss some snaps with cramps. The Lions knew Baker Mayfield would keep coming, but they kept answering the bell. Despite dominating play in the first half, Detroit only led 14-3 at the break, having left a ton of points on the field with two turnovers, a turnover on downs and a missed field goal. Jared Goff’s pick before halftime helped gift the Buccaneers points, but the Lions' offense responded with a touchdown on its first drive of the third quarter and the defense played incredibly well all night, especially considering the circumstances. The Lions might have taken the Chiefs’ best punch in Week 6, but they took out their frustrations on a good Bucs team that they might see again in January.):  https://www.nfl.com/news/nfl-power-rankings-week-8-2025-nfl-season

The Athletic (Power ranking: 1st.  Last ranking: 6th.  The job Dan Campbell has done after losing both his offensive and defensive coordinators this offseason is awfully impressive. The defense dominated the Bucs on Monday night. Offensively, the Lions leaned on the running game as Jahmyr Gibbs took 17 carries for 136 yards and two touchdowns. Campbell’s Lions haven’t lost back-to-back games since):  https://www.si.com/nfl/lions/news/power-rankings-dan-campbell-leading-best-nfl-team

Tom Brady's NFL Power Rankings: Another Week, Another New No. 1 (1. Detroit Lions Previously ranked: 3
5-1.  Brady’s thoughts: "The Lions are No. 1 after dominating last week's leader [the Buccaneers]. The stars were out with the contributions from Amon-Ra St. Brown, [Jahmyr] Gibbs and [Jared] Goff. Yahoo (2 (2): Detroit Lions (5-2) - Jahmyr Gibbs takes the Lions' offense to another level. He had 218 yards on in a stress-free win over a Buccaneers team that had just one loss before Monday night. PFF (2. Detroit Lions (Up 2) - Chance of making playoffs: 81%.  Chance of winning Super Bowl: 9%.  The Lions comfortably handled one of their biggest foes in the NFC — the Tampa Bay Buccaneers — on Monday night, further emphasizing the point that they might be the top team in the NFL. A 24-9 win against the Buccaneers pushed the Lions to 5-2 on the season, highlighting both the strength of their offense and defense, even against a banged up Bucs team. The Lions now have a 9% chance of winning the Super Bowl, and top 10 in EPA per play on both sides of the ball.):  https://www.pff.com/news/nfl-week-8-power-rankings-colts-jump-commanders-tumble

Walter football (3. Detroit Lions (4-2) – Previously: 3.  The Lions are literally the best in the NFL right now. Sure, they can lose half their offensive line, including their Pro Bowl center, and both of their coordinators, but it doesn’t matter because they’re just going to go 15-2 again.  Detroit somehow lost to Kansas City. The public learned a lesson after throwing tons of money on the Lions. The lesson? Look at the injury report before betting on a team, because Detroit was down a million defensive backs.):  https://walterfootball.com/nflpowerrankings.php

PFN (3. Detroit Lions - Last Week’s Ranking: 3.  Offense Rank: 5.  Defense Rank: 12.  Playoff Odds: 62.60%.  The Buccaneers are hardly easy competition, but the Detroit Lions made them look like exactly that on Monday night. Their 24-9 victory propelled them to a 5-2 record, further solidifying themselves among the NFC’s elite.  With losses to the Chiefs and Packers up to this point, the Lions had been missing that high-quality win against a top opponent prior to Week 7. They handled the Buccaneers extremely well on Monday, though, and that keeps them high in the rankings this week.):  https://www.profootballnetwork.com/nfl-power-rankings-week-8-2025/

On SI Week 8 NFL Power Rankings: Shocking New No. 1 Team and Biggest Lesson (3. Detroit Lions :  A lot of teams talk about the next-man-up mentality. Detroit’s coaching staff has done a masterful job of keeping players lower on the depth chart prepared and engaged. Even though the Lions played on Monday against a good Buccaneers team with essentially a whole new secondary, they gave up nine points. Detroit has one of the best coaches and coaching staffs in the National Football League.  John Maakaron, Detroit Lions On SI):  https://www.si.com/fannation/on-si-week-8-nfl-power-rankings-shocking-new-no-1-team-and-biggest-lesson-01k85w37tbaz

SI (4. Detroit Lions (5–2) - Last week’s ranking: No. 5.  Last week’s result: beat Buccaneers, 24–9.  This week: idle.  Without question, the most impressive part of Detroit’s decisive victory over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers was the strength of this patchwork secondary. This apparently wasn’t just an Aaron Glenn thing, this is a Brad Holmes/Dan Campbell thing. The Lions could field a contending defense with the remnants of the Amazon Prime analyst desk.):  https://www.si.com/nfl/nfl-power-rankings-buccaneers-tumble-after-concerning-loss-to-lions

Herd Hierarchy Week 7: Eagles Get Back on Track, Are the Colts For Real? (5. Detroit Lions - Cowherd's thoughts: "Detroit's run game jumps off the TV set. They're 5-1 in their last six games, and they got rocked by the best team in the league easily, Kansas City. Their defense takes the ball away, gets to the quarterback. What I like about Detroit is, they get the lead, and then they get sacks; and that's the way to win in the postseason."):  https://www.foxsports.com/stories/nfl/herd-hierarchy-week-7

SN (7. Detroit Lions 5-2 (7) - The Lions picked up the pieces quicly after their second loss vs. the Chiefs tough defense, which felt much like the Week 1 setback in Green Bay. Everything Dan Campbell Said After Lions Beat Buccaneers:  https://www.si.com/nfl/lions/news/everything-dan-campbell-said-after-lions-beat-buccaneers

How have Detroit Lions gone 3 years without back-to-back losses? What Dan Campbell said:  https://www.clickondetroit.com/sports/2025/10/21/how-have-detroit-lions-gone-3-years-without-back-to-back-losses-what-dan-campbell-said/

NFL tiers: From 'the fringe' to 'inner circle' (Tier 1: The inner circle - Bills, Chiefs, Lions, Rams.  Have the Bills looked like world-beaters this year? Not exactly. But armed with Josh Allen and always in the mix for the AFC title, they have to think that the only way their season could be considered a major success is if they finally break through and make -- and even win -- the title game.  The Chiefs are rounding into form, winning four of their past five games and looking as explosive offensively as we've seen them in years. Their defense has also stepped it up lately in a way that it hadn't early in the season. That unit is coming off its best performance of the season. We also know that the Chiefs are annually in the conference title game and have gone to three consecutive Super Bowls.  The Lions still have one of the best rosters in the NFL. They should get healthier over the course of the season and that should help their defense get back into fighting shape. Their offense is explosive as any in the league, and it can be ruthlessly efficient when set up in the right game script. They didn't get their chance last year thanks to injuries, but they have to be thinking big again.  The Rams could easily be 6-1 right now were it not for a blocked kick against the Eagles. Even without Puka Nacua, their offense just put up five touchdowns over in London. Their defense still has some question marks (namely at outside corner) but is a strong enough unit to make a run with Matthew Stafford nearing the end of his career.):  https://www.cbssports.com/nfl/news/nfl-tier-rankings-for-all-32-teams-from-draft-preparations-and-the-fringe-to-inner-circle/

Grading every first-round pick through Week 7 (28. Lions - DT Tyleik Williams Grade: B-.Williams is a bigger body whose primary responsibility has been occupying blockers and constricting the opponent's run game. Most of his seven pressures have been a result of playing to the whistle and progressively wearing the opposition down with power.):  https://www.cbssports.com/nfl/news/grading-every-first-round-pick-through-week-7-tyler-warren-emeka-egbuka-lead-strong-rookie-class/

Five things we liked and five we didn't in NFL Week 7 (Five things we liked in Week 7 - Dan Campbell's Lions. It's been 51 games since the Lions lost back-to-back contests, and they're 12-0 following a loss over that span.  Monday night, they did it with a bunch of guys you probably have never heard of.  Arthur Maulet joined the practice squad two weeks ago. He had five tackles and an interception.  Erick Hallett had never played a defensive snap in the NFL. He tied for the team lead with eight tackles.  Tyrus Wheat, claimed in late August after being cut by the Cowboys, had a half-sack in his entire career. He had 1.5 Monday.
Nick Whiteside II signed with the practice squad Oct. 1. He had never played a defensive snap for Detroit. He had three pass breakups.  They're playing because eight(!) members of their defensive secondary did not play due to injury. A ninth, Brian Branch, was suspended, and a 10th, Rock Ya-Sin, got hurt during the game.  Yes, the Buccaneers offense was down a ton of players, but that shouldn't take away from the effort from Campbell, defensive coordinator Kelvin Sheppard, the rest of the defensive staff and the players put in.  (P.S. I want to apologize to Jaxon Smith-Njigba for not having him in this section yet this year. He is a superstar.)):  https://www.cbssports.com/nfl/news/nfl-week-7-five-things-we-liked-and-didnt-like-including-jalen-hurts-career-day-giants-collapse/

NFL: 12 Teams Who Can Win The Super Bowl (3. Detroit Lions:  Jared Goff and the Lions have looked unstoppable this season, but can they handle the Commanders?  They are always a great team, but at home they seem to be unbeatable. The offense can beat you in so many ways, they can mehtodically drive down the field, or hit you with a big play at any time. Their secondary has been one of the most injured in the league, and they still sit at 5-2 after 7 weeks. The defense should only get better, and they’ll need to if they wqnt to win in January.):  https://www.thebiglead.com/nfl-12-teams-who-can-win-the-super-bowl/

Biggest takeaways from Week 7: Seahawks, Lions make Monday statements; Colts lone six-win team (Lions:  Will David Montgomery's numbers/stats continue to go down with Jahmyr Gibbs playing like this? Coach Dan Campbell says he's committed to keeping a good thing going with his backfield mates Gibbs and Montgomery, while trying to find more playing time for Montgomery. However, it'll likely depend on who's hot in the backfield on any given contest -- as Gibbs is coming off a two-touchdown performance with 218 total yards in the latest win over the Buccaneers. Entering Monday's game, Gibbs had been on field for 62% of the Lions' offensive plays this season, the highest mark of his career and up from 56% last season. Montgomery, meanwhile, had been on the field for just 39% of the Lions' plays this season, the lowest mark since joining the team and down from 48% in 2023 and 42% in 2024.  Most surprising performance: Despite playing without starting safeties Kerby Joseph (knee) and Brian Branch (suspension) and cornerback Terrion Arnold (shoulder), Detroit's defense stepped up, particularly in the secondary, and forced both of the Bucs' turnovers by halftime. The unit held an explosive Tampa Bay offense to 58 yards through two quarters and 251 for the game with four sacks. -- Eric Woodyard):  https://www.espn.com/nfl/story/_/id/46606189/nfl-week-7-2025-season-questions-takeaways-lessons-stats-recap-every-game

Grades:

NFL Week 7 grades: Lions get 'A-' for handling Bucs (Lions - The Lions defense had its most dominant performance of the season, and that was mostly thanks to a pass rush that rattled Baker Mayfield, who was sacked four times. The Lions' secondary, which was banged up going into the game, did a good job of blanketing the Bucs' receivers for most of the night. On the offensive side of the ball, the Lions have multiple ways to beat you, and on Monday night, they decided to beat the Bucs with Jahmyr Gibbs. The running back had a career night, becoming the first Lions player in 14 years to total at least 200 yards from scrimmage with two rushing touchdowns (Gibbs ran for 136 yards and added 82 receiving yards). The Lions made a statement in this game, and that statement is that they might be the best team in the NFC.  Grades - A-):  https://www.cbssports.com/nfl/news/nfl-week-7-grades-highlights-lowlights/
