Get to know the draft's most intriguing prospects (Kaelin Clay, Utah: Clay is known on a national scale for one moment: During a game against Oregon last November, he streaked down the middle of the field, corralled a deep pass and sprinted untouched to the end zone. Only he dropped the football at the one-yard line and an Oregon linebacker returned it 100 yards for a touchdown, making for an all-time blunder reminiscent of the infamous fumble by DeSean Jackson—who, as it happens, is a fellow graduate of Clay’s high school. But Clay, who is being projected as a mid-round pick, should be known as much for his response to that play as for the play itself. He has been nothing but open about the gaffe, even referencing it in a joke when Oregon’s Byron Marshall committed a similar mistake during the national title game. He also rejoiced when his reign atop ESPN’s “Not Top 10” finally ended. Oh, and Clay is supremely confident. He struck the Heisman Trophy pose after returning a punt for a score in a win at Michigan and recently said this.) Taxing to slow down these guys: Agholor leads draft's top returners (WR Kaelin Clay, Utah: Particulars: 5-10, 195; 4.51 in the 40 at the combine. The skinny: He played just his senior season at Utah after transferring from a junior college. He is raw as a receiver and needs refinement. But his return ability could lead to some teams giving him a chance to develop as a receiver. Clay was a sprinter of some renown in high school in California, with personal-best times of 10.46 in the 100 meters and 21.07 in the 200. Clay was fifth in the nation in punt returns (15.04-yard average on 23 attempts, with three TDs) last season, and he also had one TD on a kickoff return.) Utah pro day: Clay, Ianu are among standouts in high-pressure workout (with video) (Kaelin Clay's 40-yard dash, rumored to have been clocked at 4.38. (Each scout keeps his own time, and two that The Tribune asked about Clay's times cagily claimed to have forgotten, even as they stood with their notebooks folded under their arms.) Clay said there were no excuses for the 4.51 time he ran in Indianapolis, but admitted that a good night's sleep in Salt Lake City didn't hurt.
"The stress level wasn't there, because we're at home," he said.) (3-26-15): http://www.sltrib.com/sports/2336650-155/utah-pro-day-clay-ianu-are
2015 NFL Combine Day 2: Quarterbacks take center stage (Without a big-name profile and as part of a stacked wide receivers class this year, Kaelin Clay was hoping to open some eyes with a blazing 40-yard dash time at the combine. But with a disappointing 4.51-second mark in front of all the NFL personnel in Indianapolis, Clay has to improve before Utah's pro day. "A 40 time doesn't defy [sic] you as a player," Clay tweeted after his workout, "disappointed but it'll get better y'all see what I do on the field.") 2015 NFL Combine: Snubs, surprises (Surprise: Kaelin Clay, Utah: Although best known for fumbling the ball before entering the end zone vs. Oregon, Clay has speed that could impress in Indianapolis. His size and unpolished routes aren't ideal for the NFL, but standout times during speed drills could turn heads.) Jamison Crowder among top undersized WRs in 2015 NFL Draft (A few more to watch ... West Virginia's Mario Alford (5-9, 177), Utah's Kaelin Clay (5-10, 193) and Oregon's Keanon Lowe (5-9, 186) are a few other shorter receivers in this year's draft that grabbed my attention in the past. Clay is not just quick -- he's fast, too, as he showed as a big-play return man in 2014. He's a hard-nosed player who's willing to make the tough catches and stepped up when called upon after Utah's top receiver, Dres Anderson, suffered an injury last season.) Saturday Snaps: Breaking down the best of Week 12 in college football (Perhaps it wasn’t redemption for his epic gaffe last week, but Utah wide receiver Kaelin Clay likely felt the pressure ease during the Utes’ 21-17 double-overtime victory over Stanford on Saturday afternoon. Clay, the senior receiver who dropped a sure touchdown for a fumble just before the goal line during Utah’s 51-27 loss to Oregon, caught a pivotal 25-yard touchdown on the first play of the first overtime. He had been held to one catch for six yards through four quarters before the score. While Clay finished with a season-low two catches for 31 yards, he provided a spark at a critical moment for a Utah offense that struggled against Stanford’s stout defense.) Overtime touchdowns were timely for Kaelin Clay and Kenneth Scott (Clay — his season briefly seeming ruined by a mental error that, he believes, cost Utah a win against No. 3 Oregon — hauled in a 25-yard pass from Wilson. Clay's touchdown was his second — this one, in overtime; the first, against USC, the game-winner. Utah fans may never forget his premature celebration against the Ducks, but with those two receptions and his four returns for touchdowns, the balance has likely tilted toward many forgiving him.) Stock report: Ameer Abdullah rises, Christian Hackenberg falls (PR-KR Kaelin Clay, Utah: There is always a place in the NFL for dynamic returners with home-run potential. That's why scouts are buzzing about Clay's emergence as the top returner in college football. The 5-10, 193-pound senior has scored four times on returns (three punt returns and a kick return) while exhibiting the speed, quickness and power to run through arm tackles in traffic. Additionally, Clay flashes the wiggle to makes defenders miss, which is critical to thriving as a returner as a pro. With Clay matching a notable Pro Bowl receiver-returner's (Steve Smith) record as a punt returner, there will be a lot of interest in the Utes' playmaker when the 2015 draft rolls around in the spring.) A closer look at the kickers (The Notre Dame kicker got a combine invite, but he's going to have to show some serious leg to wind up being drafted after a deeply shaky 2014 season. Brindza has a moderately strong leg, but his accuracy can come and go, and he hit just 58% of his kicks last season, a year after hitting a so-so 76.9%. He's struggled from the 30-39 yard range, too, where you need to be able to hit 80-plus percent of your kicks to survive in the NFL. Chances are he won't be on the Falcons' radar even if Bryant walks.) (2-17-15): http://www.thefalcoholic.com/2015/2/17/8048057/nfl-scouting-combine-2015-a-closer-look-at-the-kickers

Five things we learned: Northwestern 43 ND 40 (Heading into this season Kyle Brindza was set to go down in Notre Dame’s record books as the school’s best kicker. Now he can’t even be counted on to make an extra point or come through in the clutch — his best trait heading into 2014. A week after a change at holder, Notre Dame’s brutal special teams unit cost the Irish dearly, with Malik Zaire fumbling an extra-point snap, allowing a Wildcat defender to block and return a point-after attempt for a two-point play. That three-point swing turned out to be rather important. Brindza also hooked two critical field goal attempts wide left (including one in overtime, the goat to Northwestern kicker Jack Mitchell’s heroic day). The senior kicker who before this season had ice water in his veins, just couldn’t get it done in any facet, shanking a 17-yard punt when a good kick was desperately needed as well. It’s not all on him. A kicker without confidence in his battery is a lost soul. After the game, Kelly talked about the struggles with the PAT battery when he decided to make the controversial decision to go for two in an 11-point game. That decision created a two-possession game, a margin needed for Northwestern’s comeback to even be possible. A year after the Irish ended the season with woeful coverage units and in need of rebuilding a broken facet of the game, it looks like Notre Dame will have to do it again, only with a unit even more critical to the team’s success.) A closer look at the kickers (The Texas A&M kicker hit 86.7% of his field goals and has a booming leg, as this video (inside the link) will attest. The chief problem with evaluating Lambo is that he had a fairly meager number of field goals the last two seasons at A&M, kicking a combined 25 (Kyle Brindza, below, had 24 in 2014 alone). The numbers indicate that he's one of the better kickers in this class, however, and that strong leg will be intriguing for NFL teams, especially those relying on aging veterans who are nowhere near as good as Matt Bryant.)
