Projected Round (2016): FA. 4/25/16: Rudock played at Iowa for a few seasons before transferring to Michigan for his senior year. He had a solid final season and was a functional game manager for Jim Harbaugh. In 2015, Rudock completed 64 percent of his passes for 3,017 yards with 20 touchdowns and nine interceptions. He was a smart quarterback, but lacks the arm or athleticism to be rated higher. He didn't work out at the combine. Rudock did not impress at the East-West Shrine practices. Michigan QB Jake Rudock turned a lot of heads at pro day (Quarterback Jake Rudock -- 6-foot-3, 207 pounds -- turned a lot of heads today with his pro-day workout. Rudock ran the 40-yard dash in 4.85 and 4.91 seconds. He had a 29-inch vertical and 9-foot-3 broad jump. He did the 20-yard short shuttle in 4.31 seconds and the three-cone drill in 7.06 seconds. Michigan's passing game coordinator/quarterbacks and wide receivers coach Jedd Fisch -- who is a future head coach at the college level -- had a scripted workout for Rudock, and let the scouts on hand know ahead of time what throws would be involved so they could follow along. Rudock had a good, not great, arm. He was very accurate in his pro-day workout.) East Practice Notes (I would love to say that between Blake Frohnapfel, Joel Stave and Jake Rudock we were able to see a clear pecking order in terms of accuracy and effectiveness at running the offense, but this was not necessarily the case. None of the quarterbacks made it through the day clean. Rudock threw an interception during scrimmage to Boston College safety Justin Simmons, while Joel Stave threw what should have been an interception to Terrance Smith, and Frohnapfel threw an ill-advised seam pattern against cover three that was nearly picked off by two defenders simultaneously. None of the three looked particularly compelling on the day. On the bright side, all of the quarterbacks seemed generally able to complete passes in simple drills as receivers ran patterns against air.) Shrine Game: Practice Winners From The First Two Days (Jake Rudock, QB, Michigan--As I’ve said before, if you would have told me in October that I would be trumpeting Jake Rudock as a viable NFL commodity, I’d have spit-taked whatever was in my mouth out violently in laughter. The Iowa transfer was the sole reason Michigan’s offense struggled early in the season. But then he got it together and thrived under Jim Harbaugh, improving his ball placement and playing with confidence. Those latter attributes are definitely on display at Shorecrest Prep Academy, where the East practices. He’s also shown a better arm than I witnessed even in seeing him in person twice last fall. There is real zip to his shorter and intermediate throws, and while his deep throws lack arc when he guns it, they are more on target than his East QB mates Blake Frohnapfel (who has been okay) and Joel Stave (who has not). Then there is the intangibles, oen fo the biggest reasons why it’s important to come to events like this. Rudock is a natural leader; guys want to follow him. He quickly mastered the offense and helps line up those who aren’t quite so proficient, much to QB Coach Brady Quinn’s liking. Rudock fantastic with the fans, too, signing pictures and autographs once most other players are already on the team bus. There are still warts, enough that I doubt he’s ever more than a capable No. 2, but the league is crying for smart, dependable, no-drama backup QBs.) East Roster Preview (2. Jake Rudock, Michigan: The former Iowa transfer developed substantially in his one season with Jim Harbaugh, especially in pocket maneuvering and timing in reads. Though he wasn’t often displaying ideal placement, particularly on vertical throws, he epitomized “good enough” for a Michigan offense that relied on their defense. 10 Players to Watch At Shrine Game Practices (Jake Rudock, QB, Michigan:  If you would have told me even in October that I would be excited to watch Jake Rudock audition for the NFL in an all-star game, I’d have told you to pass what you’re puffing. I mean, Iowa willingly let him transfer within the same conference. Early in the season, it looked like the Hawkeyes made a good decision as Rudock was wildly off target on deeper throws and felt the pressure a little too quickly.  Then Harbaugh happened. Rudock got better every week, a lot better in several facets. The errant deep balls started to connect as he figured out the timing with his wideouts. His ball placement, his release platform, his confidence in his pre-snap defensive evaluation all improved. When I saw him live against Rutgers, it almost looked like he was playing 7-on-7 spring ball; he was so in command of both the offense and the defense. The arm has always been there. So has the leadership and character. In St. Pete we will see just how much of the improvement was tied to Jim Harbaugh’s omnipresent tutelage and how much is Rudock himself. The guy I saw against Rutgers at the Big House, as well as watching games against Indiana, Penn State and a very talented Florida defense, is no worse than a fifth-round pick.) Michigan-Florida grades: QB Jake Rudock picks apart Gators defense (What a day from QB Jake Rudock (+6.8). His offensive line was strong, as he was only under pressure on just 18 percent of his dropbacks. Rudock picked the Gators apart when he had a clean pocket, completing 18-of-26 for 262 yards and three touchdowns. Rudock was fantastic when targeting receivers at least 10 yards downfield, completing 9-of-12 for 190 yards and a touchdown, including a perfect 3-of-3 on deep passes (20+ yards). Rudock had some help from WR Jehu Chesson (+3.1) who caught four of six targets for 112 yards and a touchdown, 81 of those yards coming after the catch.) 5 crazy good stats in college football (Jake Rudock (QB, Michigan) is the most accurate quarterback in college football when facing pressure:  Even after Iowa coach Kirk Ferentz announced that Rudock would be replaced by C.J. Beathard as the starting quarterback last winter, the Hawkeyes were surprised when Rudock decided to transfer to Michigan. There was a feeling that he would get a chance at some point to reclaim the starting gig. Rudock saw an opportunity to compete for the Wolverines starting quarterback job and jumped. It proved to be the right decision. Beathard has led Iowa to a 12-0 record, a potential playoff berth and earned a grade of +16.7 through thirteen weeks. Rudock has regressed slightly from +5.4 last season to +2.7 this season, but was able to hold on to the Michigan starting job all season. The way Beathard has played, Rudock would have been holding the clipboard all season at Iowa.  Even though Rudock has had an underwhelming season, he has one thing going for him. He leads the country in accuracy under pressure at 71.4 percent. That’s especially surprising considering he was ranked 40th last year in the same category at 56.8 percent. It’s not a small sample size either. Only nine quarterbacks have had more snaps under pressure than Rudock. After being slammed to the ground by Joey Bosa last week, Rudock is nursing a sprained AC joint in his non-throwing shoulder. He should be healthy in time for Michigan’s bowl game.) Michigan-Penn State grades: Wolverines’ defense dominates (Quarterback Jake Rudock (-1.3 game grade) came into the day coming off his best two starts this season (he led the nation in our PFF QB grades the last two weeks), but against the Nittany Lions he had a mixed day. When he was not under pressure he was very consistent, going 19 of 26 with 217 yards and a PFF grade of +2.0. However, the storyline was flipped when the Nittany Lions’ pass rush got to him; he was pressured on 15 dropbacks, and on those he only completed 50 percent of his passes for 39 yards and a QB rating of 22.6 and a -2.0 PFF grade.) Prospects to focus on (One of the most improved players this season has been redshirt senior QB Jake Rudock (6-2, 208, 4.86, #15) with back-to-back games over 300 yards and at least 71-percent completions. He set a new school record with six touchdown passes last week and is playing with supreme confidence, trusting his arm and eyes. Stock Report: From tight end to left tackle, Indiana's Spriggs continues to grow (Indiana ranks near the bottom of the FBS in total defense so it's not surprising that Michigan scored 48 points on Saturday, but the performance of redshirt senior QB Jake Rudock (6-2, 208, 4.86, #15) was a surprise as he finished with a school-record six touchdown. A graduate transfer this season from Iowa, Rudock looks like a different passer from the quarterback we saw in September as he's clearly more confident and comfortable within the Wolverines' offense, trusting his arm, mind and teammates. His development is directly translating to more points for Michigan and scouts have taken notice. After grading negatively in seven of his first eight games, Rudock has put up back-to-back monster grades, albeit against Rutgers and Indiana.
