NFLRealGM's Week 2 Picks (Detroit Lions at San Francisco 49ers (-6): No team disappointed me more than the Lions in Week 1. Head Coach Matt Patricia’s debut was abysmal. The Jets knew exactly how to defend everything coming at them, and their task was made easier by one of QB Matthew Stafford’s worst games (4 INTs). I expect a rebound by the Detroit offense, in part because their pass protection was actually quite good. Too much talent on that Lions offense to lay another egg. I do like some of the young pieces (Witherspoon, Warner, Buckner) on the 49ers defense quite a bit, but it’s an incomplete unit. So is the San Francisco offense. In what amounts to an important game for both teams, the 49ers should prevail at home. While Jimmy Garoppolo did face pressure against the Vikings last week (three sacks), there were other times he enjoyed adequate time to throw. Comparing the Detroit pass rush to the Minnesota pass rush is like, well, comparing Barry Sanders to Jim Kleinsasser. Except the advantage is going the wrong way for the Lions (and I love Jim Kleinsasser). Going to the other side of the ball, perhaps the biggest disappointment from Detroit's blowout loss to the Jets (other than Matthew Stafford's four picks) was the play of the offensive line -- which was thought to be a team strength. Good lord, Matt Patricia looked overwhelmed and underprepared.. Things were so bad, in fact, that Detroit's 48-17 loss was the worst suffered by a Lions coach in his debut. Patricia's the latest member of the Belichick coaching family to sink without his Belichick floaties. Out of seven names -- Al Groh, Bill O'Brien, Nick Saban, Eric Mangini, Josh McDaniels, Romeo Crennel and now Patricia -- only Groh has a winning record (9-7). Perhaps Detroit gets back on track in San Francisco -- Jimmy Garoppolo lost his first game as the 49ers starter last week in Minnesota -- but after watching what Sam Darnold did to this team we're doubtful. The 49ers, on the other hand, are not the instant contender many believed they would be.
