2019 NFL Mock Draft - Charlie Campbell (7. DT Ed Oliver: I have Oliver going lower than the consensus, which stems from conversations with team sources who have seen Oliver in person. They say that he is weighing in at 275 pounds and has played as heavy as 282. The Houston staff thinks that 285-290 pounds is too heavy for Oliver. Sources say that Oliver is not Aaron Donald and that such a comparison is completely off because Oliver doesn't have nearly the same strength as Donald. Donald has great strength, while Oliver lacks it. Sources say Oliver is a lot smaller than people think, and they feel general managers are going to pause when they see how light and short he is. Oliver is extremely fast, and a very twitchy athlete with a good motor and the ability to get after the quarterback. However for the NFL, he is vastly undersized and really is the size of a defensive tackle designated pass-rusher - DPR. He could be limited to being a three-technique in a 4-3 defense due to not having the length or weight for a 3-4 defensive line position. Thus, some sources think Oliver could end up being a mid-first-round pick rather than a high first-rounder. Oliver has 54 tackles with 14.5 tackles for a loss, three sacks, one forced fumble and two passes batted on the season. In 2017, he totaled 73 tackles with 16.5 tackles for a loss, 5.5 sacks, three passes batted and two forced fumbles. The 6-foot-1, 290-pounder dominated at the point of attack in 2016, starting from his debut game against Oklahoma. All season, the freshman overwhelmed offensive linemen with his quickness, athletic ability, and physicality. OLB D'Andre Walker: The Lions could use help at linebacker and at edge rusher. Here's a versatile defender for Detroit. Smith is a quality run defender who has worked hard to improve his pass-coverage skills. He is limited for coverage in the NFL, but he could be a solid rotational linebacker. Walker possesses a thick build to go with his speed. Walker has 45 tackles with 11 tackles for a loss, 7.5 sacks, four forced fumbles and three passes batted this season. He has been a nice replacement for Lorenzo Carter. According to NFL teams' preseason data provided by team sources, Walker checks in 6-foot-2, 251 pounds with 33.13-inch arms, 9.63-inch hands, and a wingspan of 80.25 inches. They have him running the 40-yard dash in 4.60 seconds. Georgia fielded a superb defense in 2017, and Walker was one of the impressive defenders in the middle of the field who helped make the Bulldogs so tough. He had 5.5 sacks, 13.5 tackles for a loss, 40 tackles and a forced fumble on the year. 81. TE Caleb Wilson: The Lions moved on from Eric Ebron, and he is breaking out with the Colts while Detroit has missed a receiving threat at tight end. Here's a mismatch weapon. Wilson totaled 60 catches for 965 yards and four touchdowns in 2018. The 6-foot-4, 235-pounder was phenomenal in 2017 as the most reliable receiving threat for Josh Rosen. Prior to a season-ending foot injury, Wilson had 38 receptions for 490 yards and one touchdown. He was instrumental in the legendary comeback over Texas A&M, hauling in 15 passes for 208 yards in that game. As a freshman in 2016, he had 16 catches for 220 yards. Walter Football 2019 NFL Mock Draft (5. Detroit Lions - CB DeAndre Baker: The Lions have a poor secondary. They're sorely lacking talent at cornerback outside of Darius Slay, so this will be their opportunity to fix that area. DeAndre Baker had a terrific 2017 campaign, showing great athleticism. He's been great this season as well, especially against LSU. 41. DE Brian Burns: The Lions don't really have much of an edge threat outside of Ziggy Ansah, who barely plays. They'll need to upgrade this area during the 2019 offseason. Brian Burns needs to bulk up quite a bit, as he played at 220 pounds as a freshman, but he has a long frame, so he has the potential to fill out. He had 9.5 sacks as a freshman. 81. LB Devin Bush: The Lions have one of the worst linebacking corps in the NFL. They can't cover anyone over the middle of the field. They need to add a player who can become the leader of their defensive unit at the position. If they do so, perhaps they'll finally be able to compete with some of the top teams in their division.) Many pundits will say that tanking is both logical and optimal for quickly improving a talent-deprived roster. Opponents to this will jump to the fan confidence and player morale card. Despite the win on Sunday in Arizona against a pitiful Cardinals team, no Lions fan should be jumping for joy that this team is somehow improving. Roster holes and talent gaps are aplenty and fans debating on whether or not the team should utilize the tank theory will need to ask themselves this question as their beloved Lions head to Draft Day in 2019: Are you more comfortable with a Quinn-Patricia duo that wins games, in a meaningless season, with a less than talented roster, just to get a lesser draft pick, or are you more comfortable with a Quinn-Patricia duo that loses games and gives you no confidence that what they're doing is working? Both being cut from the Patriot cloth, history would say that draft position doesn't seem to matter all that much so I'm not sure tanking is optimal at all. It's actually comforting to see the Lions win on the road after everything that's happened this season. It's comforting to know that Patricia is capable of winning games like this. Not giving too much credit, but the Lions played sound defensively holding Arizona to 279 yards of total offense, sacking Rosen 3 times and also forcing an INT that was returned for a touchdown. Let it be known, this performance does not cover up the holes the Lions have on both sides of the football and should be taken with a grain of salt.
