2020 All-Juice team includes Jalen Hurts, J.K. Dobbins and Kenneth Murray (One of the easiest evaluations in this class, as Young’s outstanding size (6-5, 264), athleticism and production make him look like the next Julius Peppers. He was even named a team captain at Ohio State as a true junior, making him the safest pick in the draft. Building The Perfect 2020 EDGE Defender (Pass-Rush: Chase Young, Ohio State - In all reality, Young is likely the answer for both bend and speed / quickness as well, but considering I placed a two-category limit for each player for this exact reason, Young simply gets the win for overall pass-rushing here. Young has an ideal blend of size, speed, power, and savvy to be an elite pass-rusher in the NFL. He flies off the line of scrimmage with excellent burst before slicing and dicing opposing offensive linemen with a single move more often than not. 2020 NFL Draft: Perfect landing spots for the top 10 edge defenders (1. CHASE YOUNG — NEW YORK GIANTS (PFF Big Board Rank: 2):  In all honesty, it doesn’t matter where Young ends up. He’s going to dominate, and he’s going to dominate right away, which something that you can’t bank on from your typical rookie edge defender. Young isn’t your run-of-the-mill edge prospect, though. The guy is an athletic freak, and he’s been one of the most productive pass-rushers PFF has seen since the dawn of the PFF College era in 2014.  Over the last two seasons, Young has a pass-rushing grade of 95.7 and 131 total pressures, and both of those serve as FBS-high marks for the position. When it comes to slam-dunk picks, you are just not going to find many easier NFL projections.  The consensus has been for some time that he’ll end up with the Washington Redskins at No. 2 overall. However, a scenario does exist (one that the Redskins should be thinking about) whereby they get a king’s ransom to trade out of that second pick. That potential trade down opens up the possibility of Young falling to No. 4 and the New York Giants — a team that doesn’t already have an entrenched, reliable veteran like Ryan Kerrigan or a second-year, first-round pick like Montez Sweat to turn to at the position. Instead, the Giants are currently armed with some combination of Kyler Fackrell, Lorenzo Carter and Oshane Ximines as their starting edge defenders. There is a chance that guys like Carter or Ximines could develop into solid options, but as of now, that trio has one season combined with a pass-rushing grade of 70.0 or higher (Fackrell in his rookie 2016 season on 173 total snaps).  If Young was to fall into their laps, it is hard to see Dave Gettleman messing up, and it isn’t as crazy as you might think given the chance of a Joe Burrow–Tua Tagovailoa–Jeffrey Okudah start to the draft.) Epenesa, EDGE, Iowa:  There are those collegiate edge rushers who make the most of their athleticism to get to the quarterback while displaying very little in the way of pass-rushing moves and technique. Epenesa is not one of those guys. At 6-5 and 275 pounds, he’s able to produce at the edge and inside with a prodigious bull-rush and violent, practiced hands. Epenesa won’t blow anybody away with his burst off the snap, but the production — 22 total sacks over the last two seasons and 104 total pressures in that time — speaks to a consistency that quicker defenders might struggle to match.) Prospect-pro comparisons for the top five pass rushers in the 2020 draft (1. Chase Young, Ohio State:  Pro comparison: Michael Strahan (141.5 career sacks, 854 tackles, 131 tackles for loss in 15 seasons, 1993-2007).  The athletic Young is a difference-maker as a pass-rusher, having collected 31 sacks in 23 starts over three seasons at Ohio State. And he also has the strength to stop the run, as reflected in his 42.5 tackles for loss. 5 Lions-related takeaways from the 2020 NFL Scouting Combine (Chase Young is still very much in play, and he’s the Lions pick if he’s available - For the Lions to land Ohio State EDGE Chase Young, the consensus best player in the draft, at No. 3, it would take a couple of things outside of the team’s control. First, the Washington Redskins would have to take Alabama Qb Tua Tagovailoa with the No. 2 pick.  That seems more of a realistic possibility now than before the combine. New Washington coach Ron Rivera threw the door wide open for taking Tua during his media session. He had a chance to quash it all and give last year’s first-rounder, Dwayne Haskins, a vote of confidence. Rivera did note Haskins’ improvement through his rocky rookie season, specifically citing the win over the Lions, but the enthusiasm with which he talked about the potential of taking Tagovailoa means it must at least be a realistic consideration.  It could be a smokescreen, too. Washington doesn’t have a second-round pick and is in more dire need of extra assets than the Lions. Rivera might have been masterfully (or unwittingly) driving up the trade value for another team aiming to land Tagovailoa. That would drop Young into the Lions’ laps. Every conversation I’ve had with people whose Lions knowledge and draft opinions I trust leads me to conclude the team would run to the podium and select Young if he’s available at No. 3.) College Football Playoff Preview: Ohio State vs. Clemson (Can Clemson contain the most dominant defensive player in college football in Chase Young?  We all know by now that Chase Young is the shoo-in second overall pick in the 2020 NFL draft and is one of the most dominant defensive linemen in recent memory. Not only is Young the highest-graded edge rusher in 2019 at 96.7, but he is on pace to be the highest-graded defensive player we have ever seen in the PFF College era. He has racked up sacks and fumbles like none other and has quite literally been a game-wrecker. There’s only been one instance of Young being shut down in the pass-rush: Week 8 against Northwestern. That game, they used quick passes and designed rollouts to the opposite side of Young to ensure he couldn’t make any noise. They were scared of Young and rightfully so. Clemson certainly won’t apply the same timid game plan the Wildcats used, so can their offensive tackles hold their own against Young?  Young never spends an entire game in one location – he’ll bounce around from side to side against Clemson. In other words, all tackles will have to prepare mightily for their reps against Young. At left tackle, Jackson Carman gets the starting nod, but Jordan McFadden has been great in filling in for a few snaps. Both have been fairly successful at that alignment, ranking among the top 30 in PFF grade (McFadden sixth, Carman 26th). On the right side, senior Tremayne Anchrum has been the guy and had been a superb pass-blocker. At that alignment, Anchrum is tied for seventh in PFF pass-block grade and in pressure rate allowed.  Regardless of who Young faces to start the game, it’ll be a tough task for either party. ROUNDTABLE: 2019 CFB SEASON (Who should win the Heisman Trophy in 2019?  Christopher Crawford: If Chase Young had not have been handed his two-game suspension -- justifiable or not -- I would have gone with him. Easily. He was, however, so I have to go with Joe Burrow. What he did this year was nothing short of spectacular, and there’s simply no way that LSU is where they are right now without his efforts. Lots of great seasons this year, but Burrow’s is at another level. Raphielle Johnson: Chase Young. Supposedly the Heisman is given to the most outstanding college football player in the United States. For me, he fits the definition better than any other candidate. Who was the most impressive player you saw this season?  Crawford: Burrow and Young would be a tie for me, just because it’s not a fair comparison, and because I’m a coward.  Johnson: Chase Young, followed by Joe Burrow.  Klassen: If "impressive" is to be considered regardless of expectations for a player, Chase Young would be my pick. Young is one of the best pass-rushers of the past two decades, and has a rare blend of speed, power, and technique that will make him a 10-sack player in the league for a long, long time. If "impressive" is to be considered with respect to expectations, however, LSU freshman CB Derek Stingley Jr. has to be the guy. Top recruit or not, Stingley played like a top-5 draft pick as a true freshman in the SEC. That's incredible.  If you had the first pick in the 2020 NFL Draft, who would you take?  Crawford: As much as I love Chase Young and think he’s the best prospect in this class, if I’m the Bengals, Dolphins or a quarterback-needy team, I’m taking Burrow. If I’m the Giants or a team that has already invested in a young signal-caller, Young.  Froton:  If the team who wins the first pick has a quality QB already, then I would go with Chase Young. If the team selecting first does not have a QB, then the choice has to be Joe Burrow. His 78% completion percentage combined with the third-most air yards by a QB this season is a feat that cannot be overstated.  Johnson: Chase Young. Lindquist:  Depends on need blah blah blah. I'm taking Chase Young and I'm not really thinking twice about it. Burrow might be the popular pick, here, but I'll be honest -- I'm not 100% sold. Who is Joe Burrow with the Miami Dolphins or Cincinnati Bengals? Is he the same guy he was with Tigers passing-game coordinator Joe Brady? Maybe. Or maybe, removed from a comfortable system, removed from an LSU fan base that has welcomed him in as one of their own, he's the guy who never broke out at Ohio State. 2019 Heisman Trophy: NFL draft projections for all 4 finalists (Chase Young | EDGE | Ohio State:  Want an indication of how dominant Young has been this year? He finished the regular season with an FBS-leading 16.5 sacks – 2.5 ahead of the second-place finisher – and did so while missing two games.  Young has been a one-man wrecking crew this season, dominating offensive tackles across the Big Ten and tallying at least half of a sack in all but one game he played in 2019. He also ended up with 21 tackles for a loss, which finished fourth in the nation, and 7 forced fumbles, which placed him in a tie for first.  The consensus top defender in the 2020 class and arguably the best overall prospect, Young is a tenacious pass-rusher who features a sky-high ceiling at an extremely important position. He has stellar athletic ability, firing off the snap with impressive acceleration and showing off top-notch flexibility when turning the corner. 5 defensive linemen who could make sense for Detroit Lions’ defense in NFL draft (Ohio State DE Chase Young -- That’s right, it’s the obvious one here. Just in case anybody has missed Chase Young in action this season, the Ohio State defensive end is definitely worth the pre-draft hype.  With the Lions crawling closer to the top of the draft, it’s officially acceptable to link Young to Detroit as a possibility. ESPN gives the Lions a 46.5% chance to land a top-five pick. Young shouldn’t sneak by the first three picks, so Detroit will most likely have to lose out for a realistic chance at calling his name.  While his career stats as a whole are more than impressive, Young has hit another level his junior year in Columbus. He has 16.5 sacks, 19.5 tackles for loss and seven forced fumbles this season. He’s listed at 6-foot-5, 265 pounds and has flashed an elite level of speed and physicality for the undefeated Buckeyes. ESPN ranks Young No. 1 on its big board while PFF puts him at No. 3 overall. Despite not being first or second, the analytics site gives Young a record high pass-rushing grade of 97.0 on the season. College Football: Power 5 Players of the Year (BIG TEN CONFERENCE: Chase Young, Edge, Ohio State - Young was the nation's most dominant player regardless of position whenever he stepped on the field in 2019. No player has ever done the kind of things that Young was able to accomplish in the regular season, finishing the year as the highest-graded defensive player that we've ever graded in our six years. His 97.0 overall grade is the highest grade of any player on either side of the ball this year, and his 97.1 pass-rushing grade is clear of anyone else that we've ever graded.) NFL DRAFT PROSPECT SHOWDOWN: WEEK 15 (Ohio State vs Wisconsin - Ohio State EDGE Chase Young vs Wisconsin OT Cole Van Lanen: Championship weekend features a slew of re-run prospects. Re-runs aren’t always bad, though, because who doesn’t want to see more of Ohio State EDGE Chase Young? It’s hard to get tired of watching the most talented player in the country. Among a wide array of other skills and traits, Young’s first step is unreal. Being able to fly off the line of scrimmage and threaten the outside shoulder is a major advantage for any pass-rusher. Not only does a fast first step give a constant advantage when working outside, but can coax tackles into setting extra wide toward the edge, which exposes them to being beaten inside. The best pass-rushers understand how to make both of these approaches work together. Here is Young beating Michigan State’s left tackle with both approaches. In the first clip, Young shoots off the line of scrimmage and doesn’t even give the tackle a chance. By Young’s third step, which is typically where you can tell if a pass-rusher is going to win the rep or not, he is already turning the corner of the tackle’s outside shoulder and the tackle has completely turned his frame to the sideline. This may not need saying, but when a tackle already has their entire frame turned toward the sideline three steps in, it’s not going to be a good rep for him.  In the second clip, Young takes the opposite approach. He initially steps outside to allow the tackle to believe he’s going to path toward the outside shoulder, but then shoots back toward the inside. The tackle is overemphasizing his need to gain depth and width, so he gets caught with an awkward lean on his third step trying to reach inside while his momentum drags him the other way. No surprise, Young takes advantage of the lean by straight-arming the tackle on his way to the quarterback. Michigan State’s saving grace on this play was that their quarterback got the ball out at the top of his drop, but had he been forced to go to the next read, this was a sure sack for Young.  What’s worse for Wisconsin OT Cole Van Lanen is that Young has done exactly this to him before. When Ohio State played Wisconsin during the regular season in late October, Young recorded a season-high four sacks en route to a blowout win. Of course, not all of those sacks and various other pressures were against Van Lanen, but the senior left tackle is not without blame for Young’s incredible performance that day.  This rep looks eerily similar to the first rep in the Michigan State sample from above. By the third step, Young is already creeping past the outside shoulder and Van Lanen’s body is turned entirely toward the sideline. There is no way for Van Lanen to recover here, not even if he were far more agile than he actually is. Though a weird blitz pickup from the back and a smart slide up in the pocket from the quarterback bail Van Lanen out this time, he won’t be so fortunate every time, just as he wasn’t on that day.  Van Lanen won’t even have the advantage in the run game that he has over most other edge defenders. In most matchups, Van Lanen has the raw power to win out, but Young can match his power, win with sharp technique, or dance around him with short-area quickness. That’s not to say Young will beat Van Lanen on every single run rep, but this matchup is probably a wash, at best, for Van Lanen, whereas he has a clear advantage almost every other time. Expect Young to tear apart the Badgers for a second time this season. Six From Saturday: Jalen Mayfield Holds His Own Against Chase Young (1. At least one Michigan player stood out to scouts in Ann Arbor on Saturday: sophomore right tackle Jalen Mayfield. It was pointed out to me that when Ohio State star Chase Young was over left tackle Jon Runyan, the Wolverines consistently gave Runyan help. When Young was over Mayfield, the coaches didn’t feel the need to do as much to help. Mayfield, a true sophomore, should be a name to watch in the future.) College Football: 2019 PFF All-American Team (EDGE DEFENDER - First Team: Chase Young, Ohio State:  Young was seemingly unblockable all season long, when in the lineup. He didn't let a two-game suspension bother him in the slightest, as he finished the year with 18 sacks, four quarterback hits and 25 more hurries, despite the offensive gameplans clearly schemed to avoid him. Only a few times in recent history has a defensive player required a specific scheme the way that Young commanded, as there was palpable evidence of offenses completely avoiding him, including the Northwestern offense who dramatically changed their gameplan when the two met. On the very first play when Northwestern and Ohio State met, Young quickly recorded a sack, but for the next 16 snaps, the Wildcats either ran to the opposite side of the field or threw a screen pass to avoid Young's impact. He finishes the regular season with a pass-rush win rate of 29.6%, seeing more double teams as the year went on, impactful just the same as he opened up lanes for the other Buckeye pass-rushers.  Young is clearly the best player when he steps on the field, and if the offensive coordinator opposite him didn't know it before the game, they certainly got the taste of it immediately. He's as disruptive a pass-rusher that we've seen this year and perhaps even ever at the college football level and Young continues to push the boundaries of what we have come to expect, even from him. He's by far the highest-graded player in college football and is currently on pace to be the highest-graded player we've ever seen in our six years of grading college. He has a nose for the football and is winning over 30% of his pass-rushes still, this late in the season, which is an absurd figure. He'll have two more marquee games against NFL-ready offensive tackles to prove his worth against Michigan and the winner of Wisconsin-Minnesota in the Big Ten Championship and with two more big-time performances like the one he had against Penn State, the discussion for him being the second defensive player to win the Heisman will only heat up.) Young was dominant in his return to action following a 2-game suspension and has now won 31.4% of his pass-rushes, by far leading the nation's edge rushers and on pace to break the previous Power-5 record set by former Kentucky edge rusher Josh Allen in 2018. CHASE YOUNG, EDGE, OHIO STATE:  The right to be called the top non-offensive skill player in the country belongs to Young simply because he's the top player in the country, no matter the moniker. Young is not only getting home with the sacks that get the general box score fan excited, he's coming with constant pressure and winning an astounding percentage of his pass rushes. He's at the top of the food chain when it comes to pass rush win rate, defeating the opposing offensive lineman in front of him on 32.1% of his pass-rushing snaps through nine weeks, what would be a PFF record if he continues that pace. He's gotten home with 37 total pressures this year, on just 158 pass-rushing snaps. His pressure rate of 23.4% speaks to just how effective he has been when rushing the passer while he's also chipped in with five stops in run defense without a single missed tackle in the run game. PFF College Football Heisman Watch after Week 9 (1. EDGE CHASE YOUNG, OHIO STATE (Last Week: 3rd):  Young makes his debut at No. 1 but not his debut on our Heisman list as he's reached at high as No. 2 and been on our Heisman radar for six weeks now after making his debut after Week 3. The new leader in the clubhouse put forth yet another dominant game against Wisconsin in Week 9 except this game was a bit different. He finished with the highest grade we've ever given to an edge defender at the college level in a single game at least 25 snaps. He's crushing records on a game-by-game basis and putting forth the best season we've ever seen from a player on either side of the ball in our time of grading football at any level. 2020 NFL Draft Stock - Week 9 (Up - Chase Young, DE, Ohio State:  Young had a record-setting game against Wisconsin, dominating with four sacks and two forced fumbles. He beat the left tackle with a bull rush for one sack, showed speed to fly by the right tackle for a strip-sack, bounced off a double team to get a coverage sack, and darted by a tight end for a strip-sack. Young was unstoppable and led the Buckeyes' defense to shutting down the Badgers' scoring attack. This season, Young has been on fire, and he has a shot at surprising 20 sacks, as he currently sits at 13.5. He also has 29 tackles and five forced fumbles.  The Wisconsin tape will help Young to be a top-five pick in the 2020 NFL Draft. As a pass-rusher, he has an innate ability to get after the quarterback. Young has a quick first-step with a nice get-off that puts offensive tackles on their heels. Young has quickness around the edge and is able to close on the quarterback quickly. Young shows functional athleticism to sink his hips and dip under tackles to beat their blocks. He also is effective working to the inside, as he has some strength to execute a rip move and is able to knock tackles off balance with a hard shove and cut to the inside to collapse the pocket. College Football Week 9: Eckrich Big Ten Team of the Week (EDGE DEFENDER - Chase Young, Ohio State:  A Heisman-worthy edge defender, Chase Young put together a monster afternoon versus the Badgers in Ohio State’s 38-7 win. He put the world on notice yet again with a remarkable 96.5 overall grade for the game. NFL draft winners and losers: 2020 draft will be the year of the wide receiver (Prior to Ohio State’s game against Wisconsin on Saturday, I started compiling players for Yahoo Sports’ upcoming top-50 prospects list. The No. 1 overall player on my board was the easiest to fill in.  Chase Young might be the highest-graded defender to come out in a few years — higher for some than Myles Garrett even — and the clear best prospect available in the 2020 NFL draft class. Then Young went out and dropped four sacks, two forced fumbles and another tackle for loss against a good Badgers team that is stout up front.  Shut it down, kids. Barring some wild, unforeseen event, Mr. Young is your best player in this coming class. He probably should be the Heisman Trophy favorite, but we know how that goes with non-offensive players.  And as a personnel man mentioned to us, the way San Francisco 49ers rookie pass rusher (and former OSU teammate) Nick Bosa is playing, being mentioned not only as a Defensive Rookie of the Year favorite but as a Defensive Player of the Year candidate, it can only help Young’s cause.  There are some people in scouting who believe Young actually could have a higher ceiling as a prospect than either Nick or Joey Bosa. This week’s Game Plan (Ohio State DE Chase Young (vs. Wisconsin, FOX, Noon): Young has been tough for evaluators to figure out. “Top-five lock,” one AFC college scouting director said. “All the positives. All the skills. Think [Jadeveon] Clowney.”   Since Young arrived in Columbus in 2017, he’s been considered to be every bit the defensive end prospect that Joey and Nick Bosa were—and he has not disappointed. This year, the production has met the potential. Through seven games, Young has 9.5 sacks, despite being the focal point of most offensive game plans and getting pulled early in a slew of blowouts.  “What’s been so impressive about Chase is that he’s played so hard this year when it would be easy for him to pace himself,” said an NFC national scout. “But he’s been relentless as a pass rusher and physical as a run defender. He’s lived up to all the hype and that’s not easy to do. He’s also had that Joey Bosa-type effect where he is affecting the plays without making the plays and not getting in a funk because he’s getting double-teamed.”  Ohio State had the top non-quarterback drafted two of the last four years, and the top defensive players drafted in three of the last four years. Five possible Lions 2020 draft prospects: Week 9 (Young:  OK, let's be realistic, even with Detroit's recent struggles, they'd have to extend into unexpected territory for the Lions have to a realistic shot of adding Young, who is almost certain to be off the board in the first five picks.  But seriously, I'm doing you a disservice if I don't recommend you check him out at least once this season. The next in a growing line of talented edge rushers to come out of Ohio State, Young would certainly solve one of Detroit's biggest issues, the defense's inability to get to the quarterback. NFL DRAFT PROSPECT SHOWDOWN: WEEK 9 (Wisconsin vs Ohio State - Wisconsin OT Cole Van Lanen vs Ohio State EDGE Chase Young:  Wisconsin OT Cole Van Lanen makes a well-deserved return to the Prospect Showdown, but the stakes are much, much higher this time around. Coming off an upset loss to Illinois, Wisconsin absolutely need to beat Ohio State in order to save the season. In order to beat Ohio State, Van Lanen has to keep EDGE Chase Young as quiet as possible.  Young is going to be the first non-quarterback off the board. Depending on which team actually ends up on the clock at first overall, Young may even be the first player off the board — period. Young is in the Jadeveon Clowney or Myles Garrett tier of pass-rushing prospect that should legitimately force teams to question whether they should take any player, even a potential franchise quarterback, over him. Through eight weeks, Young is tied for the FBS-lead in sacks at 9.5, matched only by Boise State’s Curtis Weaver. Young also leads in Pro Football Focus’ pass-rush grade among players with at least 200 snaps. He has forced three fumbles, broken up a pass, and — dead serious — blocked a field goal. There is nothing the junior defensive end can’t do. Finding flaws in Young’s game is like asking what Young Thug’s “worst” album is, but any casual viewer can tell you that his speed off the edge is his Barter 6. Young flies off the snap and eats up ground quicker than any player in the country. He gets to and around the edge in such a hurry that he could probably still finish the season with 10 sacks if the offensive tackle across from him was allowed to false start on every rep. Cincinnati does not have elite offensive tackles even by AAC standards, but this kind of speed could take advantage of any pass protector. A good rule of thumb for offensive linemen is that their butt should be like a camera that is always fixed on the quarterback. The moment the quarterback goes out of the frame, the offensive tackle is either beaten or praying they’ve pushed the pass-rusher far enough behind the pocket to survive. Young gets offensive tackles to abandon this rule almost instantly time and time again.  Speed alone is not always enough, though. Young does have plenty of instances where he simply runs through the outside shoulder without so much as even trying to engage with the offensive tackle, but often times his opponent forces him to do a little extra to win the rep. That’s no issue for Young. It must be frustrating for an offensive tackle to be beaten by Young’s hand swipe. Young does not have any special technique or a particularly powerful swipe. Rather, because Young is often a half-step ahead of where the average pass-rusher would be at any given point in a play, it’s usually unrealistic for a lineman to be square with him and get a clean two-hand punch into his frame. This clip is a great example in that the offensive tackle only gets a chance to extend one arm out, a hand that Young swats down and bends through with the same energy of someone driving down the lane to dunk on their younger brother. Is it rude? Maybe a little, but the game is the game.  Van Lanen isn’t built to handle a player like Young. Well, no offensive tackle is really built to handle Young, but Van Lanen is particularly exploitable for a fellow as fast as Young. Van Lanen is a massive 6-foot-5 and 315-pounds with long arms and a thick torso. In the run game, Van Lanen’s hulking size is advantageous, but it can be a burden in pass pro because he does not carry all that weight particularly well. The Badger tackle often takes very short, quick pass sets and ends up panning his “camera” away from the quarterback to shove pass-rushers wide of the pocket. Against a lot of college pass-rushers, that’s fine. Against Young, it’s asking to get torched in a split second. Here is a good example of Van Lanen getting beat because of his short set. Van Lanen does not gain much depth off the snap, which leaves him turning quite dramatically to the arc to match the pass-rusher. While Van Lanen is trying to turn outside and lunge his hands forward to connect with the pass-rushers’ chest, the Michigan State gets his arms over Van Lanen’s and chops down. The chop not only costs Van Lanen his point of contact, but he loses all sense of balance, giving way for the pass-rusher to breeze on by for an easy sack. If a run-of-the-mill Michigan State defensive end can make it look this smooth versus Van Lanen, Young could be in for quite a day.  The only caveat on pass-rushing downs is that Van Lanen tends to get help in pass protection. Sometimes it’s rolling the pocket away from him, other times it’s getting a tight end or running back to chip, but Wisconsin does not like to leave him on an island on a consistent basis. Even a lot of Van Lanen’s isolated pass pro snaps are out of empty formations or quick passing concepts from shotgun, neither of which should leave much room for Van Lanen to give up a sack because the ball will be out in a hurry. It would not be a surprise if Young only got a handful of clean pass-rushing reps against Van Lanen.  Van Lanen should be able to win in the run game, at least. Young is not a bad run defender by any means, but he is more someone who squeezes the edge, plays the option, and chases down plays from the backside. Young is not someone to own the point of attack or ragdoll offensive tackles out of the way. Conversely, that is exactly how Van Lanen win. A majority of Van Lanen’s run game reps are over the instant he initiates contact with those long, powerful claws of his. Van Lanen should “win” the run game side of things, even if it’s not the overwhelming blowout he has so often forced upon other defenders.  Pass-rush is still king, though. The Badgers have quietly been leaning a bit more on their passing attack with quarterback Jack Coan and Young is a nightmare off the edge unlike anything the junior passer has seen before. NFL draft winners and losers: OSU's Chase Young, Jeffrey Okudah look like top-10 locks (I spent last Friday night watching Ohio State dismantle Northwestern, 52-3. Also in attendance were general managers from nearly 16 percent of the NFL’s teams. The draw was the tremendous wealth of talent of the Buckeyes, and the GMs and several other scouts and personnel directors could not have been disappointed.  Buckeyes pass rusher Chase Young had a sack on the third play of the game. Jeffrey Okudah, one of the best cornerbacks in the country, didn’t allow a reception on three targets. Fellow DB Shaun Wade, a do-it-all performer in the Buckeyes’ secondary, broke up a pass and was strong in coverage. RB J.K. Dobbins had probably his finest game in what has been an impressive bounceback season, playing his way into the top-50 range next spring.  And on and on … it was a complete performance by a roster teeming with NFL talent. One GM we spoke with prior to kickoff said he doesn’t typically scout the same team in back-to-back weeks but that he might make an exception to go see Ohio State hosting Wisconsin in person next week.  In my mind, after speaking with NFL folks and people at Ohio State, Young and Okudah appear to be no-brainer top-10 selections as things stand right now for the 2020 NFL draft. NFL Draft Mailbag: Tony Pauline on Tua Tagovailoa, Jalen Hurts, and more (Is Ohio State’s Chase Young a better prospect than the likes of Jadeveon Clowney, either of the Bosa brothers or Myles Garrett were? It’s no stretch to say that Ohio State’s defense currently has the two best defenders in the country. There’s little doubt that Chase Young sits atop said list after yet another unblockable performance against Nebraska. He racked up five more pressures on only 11 pass-rushing snaps for a 96.8 pass-rushing grade. The junior is approaching rarified air, as his 96.5 pass-rushing grade on the season would shatter the previous PFF college record of 94.4 set by Josh Allen last season. Young easily proved his worth against Nebraska, winning a ridiculous 45.5% of his pass-rush snaps as he now is not only the nation's highest-graded edge defender, he's the highest-graded player at any position as he's on record pace this year. If that pace continues, Young will continue to rise on these rankings and with a perfect 13-0 record at the end of the year, give him the nod over his own signal-caller who is also deserving of the award.) NFL draft winners and losers: Lock Ohio State's Chase Young into top five – 'He’s better than [Nick] Bosa' (It feels foolish to stamp a grade on a player before October. But imagine watching Ohio State’s Chase Young and not thinking he deserves to be one of the first players drafted.  Of course, anything could happen — an injury, off-field trouble or a serious dip in play — between now and the 2020 NFL draft in late April. But the way things are trending, it would be a surprise if the Buckeyes’ star pass rusher wasn’t one of the first two non-quarterbacks taken.  That almost certainly places Young in the top five of the draft. It could even make him the top overall selection, depending on which teams fall where.  “He’s better than [Nick] Bosa,” one college scouting director told Yahoo Sports. “Maybe Bosa was a better technician, better hand fighter, but boy, I don’t know now. You just see the flashes of power and speed, and those rare football instincts [Young] has, and it’s hard not to think he’ll be one of our highest-graded players when it’s all said and done.”  Young had a forced fumble and another sack at Nebraska, the sixth straight game, dating back to last season, in which he has had at least one sack. That’s 22 sacks for his career, which places him tied for eighth all time in school history with the late Will Smith. Young would have to go bananas to pass all-time Buckeyes leader Mike Vrabel (36), but he has a good chance to pass Jason Simmons (27.5) for second.  And in case you’re wondering, Bosa logged 17.5 career sacks in 29 career games. Young is at 22 in 28 games. Joey Bosa racked up 26 sacks in his 38 games at OSU.  And yes, teams are doubling Young — quite often. That’s what makes his incredible start to the season so impressive.  “They’ll put a tackle and a back, or a tackle and a tight end on him,” the director said. “They’ll use two linemen. They slant protection his way, chip and cut him. They’ll run away from him or roll out the other direction. Before he ever gets his hands on your guys, he’s already having an effect on what you do.”  Hence why Nebraska QB Adrian Martinez finished the game 8-of-17 passing for 47 yards with three picks and no TDs.  “[Young] basically makes you play one-handed, and he’s still getting home,” the director said. “Very, very impressive. And on the handful of times [opponents] don’t double him, he’s making them pay for it. He’s just wrecking games out there.”  On Saturday, scouts from the Miami Dolphins, Oakland Raiders, New York Giants and Green Bay Packers watched Ohio State’s game against the Huskers. Those first three teams could be in range to draft Young and need an edge rusher. The Dolphins (two first-round picks) and Raiders (three) also will be in a position to trade up, if needed.  Quarterbacks will have their say in this draft, especially at the top. It could even be shaping up to be a four- or five-QB first round. In the past 10 drafts, quarterbacks have made up 26 percent of the top-five selections. Next on that list are edge rushers with 10 (20 percent). Offensive tackle is third with seven selections in that range.  Young meets both the positional prerequisite, as well as possessing ample talent to be considered that high. At 6-foot-5 and 265 pounds, he fits the prototypical size for the position, and his production this season — eight sacks, three forced fumbles, even a blocked kick — are elite. Athletically, we’d be surprised if he didn’t test in the same vicinity as previous top-pick edge rushers Myles Garrett and Jadeveon Clowney.  Young is our best overall player regardless of position for next spring’s draft. He came into the season as one of the best three players, and Young has only improved — by a noticeable measure, too. He’s flat-out taking over games. And while we’re keeping that grade in pencil, it’s hard to envision it changing dramatically barring some unforeseen seismic event.  Doing up your own mock draft? 2020 NFL Draft Stock - Week 2 (Up - Chase Young, DE, Ohio State: Young is considered a future first-round pick with top-10 potential, and he showed why with a dominant performance against Cincinnati. In the first quarter, Young came up with a third-down rush using a rip move to get under the left tackle and upfield. Some of his teammates got to the quarterback first, flushing the signal-caller up in the pocket, but Young cleaned up by chasing him down for a sack. Shortly later, Young made a big play on special teams, knifing by the right side of the line and blocking a short field goal.  Just before halftime, Young dropped an interception off a deflected pass, and if he had held on it probably would have been a touchdown return, but Young started running before securing the ball. Early in the third quarter, Young added another sack, using speed to get upfield and dipping under the left tackle to get to the quarterback. The Buckeyes blew out Cincinnati and were able to pull their starters in the second half.  This tape will help Young to be a high first-rounder because he showed the ability to get after the quarterback with speed and some variety in moves. He also displayed the strength to fight through blocks and was instinctive to track down ball-carriers. Young looks like a future pick in the top half of the first round.) NFL draft winners and losers: Joe Burrow can't be overlooked after Texas statement (EDGE1, no doubt - Ohio State’s Chase Young is a manimal. (That’s man plus animal, you know?) The 6-5, 256-pound junior pass rusher was hailed as a top-five pick entering the season, and so far he’s living up to the billing.  On Saturday, Young made his presence felt early and often with five tackles, 1.5 sacks and a blocked field goal. He’s a special talent who can impact games in so many ways. There are still a few small warts on his game, and he might not possess that freakish twitchiness some of the NFL’s elite pass rushers possess.  Young also failed to haul in a tipped-pass interception that hit him squarely in the hands. It would have been his first college pick and — very possibly — his first touchdown since high school. But nitpicking Young’s game can be someone else’s hobby. I’m all in on him at this point.  A national scout who made his way through Columbus this summer relayed a story to me about that trip. The scout had seen only two games of Young’s from last season and was confused about all the hype. Turns out, the scout probably watched Young’s two worst games last year — and neither were bad, mind you. Just not top-10-pick type of games, he’d find out later.The scout asked Buckeyes coaches, “So is Young really that good?” They looked at him like he had a hole in his forehead, which led to some awkward laughter. And that is likely how I’ll be looking at anyone questioning Young’s place in the top 10 until further notice.  Nothing against Iowa’s A.J. Epenesa or any of the other fine pass-rush candidates in the 2020 class. It should be a very good group the way things are looking. But Young is the guy leading the way now.) Chase Young is graded very highly by some who expect him to be a top-five pick in the 2020 draft. While I like Young’s game, I also have some concerns.  Young is a quick, athletic edge rusher who beats opponents off the snap and displays great speed up the field. He’s fluid, covers a lot of areas and easily makes plays in space. Young also has a long, thin build and gets tied up in blocks.  While he gives effort against the run, Young must get stronger and add bulk to his frame while maintaining his speed and quickness.) NFL Draft: Big Ten defensive All-Conference preseason predictions (DL – Chase Young, Ohio State:  Chase Young is a supreme talent and is probably the safest bet to go first overall in the 2020 NFL Draft, excluding quarterbacks. He’s got the size and speed to be a force at the next level and shows a great mind for the game. He dissects play early and I believe he’s a perfect fit as a hybrid outside linebacker at the next level.  Young was second in the Big Ten in sacks last season and looks to be one of the nation’s leaders this year. Tony Pauline Mailbag: NFL Draft, Jalen Thompson, and Rookie Impacts (Heading into the 2019 season and the 2020 NFL Draft, how do you stack the two elite defensive ends, AJ Epenesa and Chase Young?  I grade Young ahead of Epenesa but I think both are slightly overrated. Young has the explosiveness and athleticism you want in an elite pass rusher but he struggles handling blocks at the point.  He is also streaky at times.  Epenesa does not come across on film as an elite athlete but makes a lot of plays.  He’s bigger and stronger than Young but I wonder – as he physically matures and fills out his frame, does he stay at defensive end in a four-man line?) 2020 NFL Draft: Chase Young and A.J. Epenesa lead EDGE class (1. Young:  Chase Young, a five-star recruit of out powerhouse Dematha high school in Maryland, has superstar potential. Young is an exciting edge prospect as he has tremendous athleticism and speed to consistently burn offensive tackle. At 6’5″ and 265 pounds, the imposing defensive end/edge rusher has been a terror during his two years in Columbus. In 22 career games, Young has racked up 19.5 tackles for loss and 12 sacks. Expect those numbers to increase substantially as a junior in 2019.  Young is a prototypical modern presence off the edge. He’s strong, fast and knows how to get into the backfield.
