Building The Perfect 2020 Safety Prospect (Speed: Isaiah Simmons, Clemson - 4.39. Four point three nine. At 6-foot-4 and 238-pounds, no earthly being should be able to run a sub-4.40 40-yard dash, but perhaps Isaiah Simmons really is from another planet. Regardless of size, Simmons' speed is absurd. According to Mockdraftable, a 4.39 40-yard dash ranks in the 95th percentile among safeties and in the 89th percentile among all defensive backs, which would include cornerbacks. Simmons is somehow taller, bigger, and faster than Derwin James, who many viewed as an unthinkable athlete in his own right. The speed is clear as day on film, too. Be it from a linebacker spot (which Simmons did not play as much of in 2019), a safety position, or at the nickel, Simmons always looked like the best athlete on the field. Simmons can trigger downhill toward the line of scrimmage with as much raw speed as he shows moving sideline to sideline, both of which blend together to make him a threatening strong safety prospect similar to James or Kam Chancellor. Even in deep coverage, Simmons flashes the speed and range of a high-end safety. Over 100 of Simmons' snaps in 2019 came from a legit free safety alignment, which was not at all the case the previous season. For whatever reason, DC Brent Venables developed an even higher confidence in Simmons' speed and processing as a cover guy and let a linebacker-sized man roam around 20 yards down the field in both one-high and two-high shells. On paper, it sounds absurd, but Simmons made it look as natural as any. The truth about this play is that Simmons is not doing some Earl Thomas impression as a legit ballhawking free safety. Rather, Clemson have a called rotation that spins Simmons from a one-high alignment to be a deep-half player to the short side of the field while a DB at much shorter depth on the wide side of the field bails up to be the deep-half player to that side. In other words, Simmons was always going to be moving towards this play by nature of his assignment, but the speed at which he covers that ground and beats the ball to the catch point with time to spare should not be possible at 240-pounds. Of all the category winners, this may actually be the most contentious, even though consensus top-10 Isaiah Simmons is the choice. To some, one of the concerns with Simmons is that he is too tall and stiff to manage playing in man coverage, especially against some of the NFL's smaller and quicker slot receivers. While that may generally be somewhat true, Simmons is more often going to be matched up on tight ends and "big slot" receivers anyway. And even so, many of Simmons' man coverage reps against standard slot receivers are good, particularly when working vertically. Simmons understands very well how to mirror a WR's stem and flip his hips to run with them while attaching himself into their hip "pocket" to help slow their momentum. Against some of the shiftier route runners Simmons will see in the NFL, he will surely lose some reps, but the same is true of almost all of the league's top cover safeties. It's why they are safeties, not cornerbacks. If a player is that special in man coverage, there is a zero percent chance a coach is putting that talent at safety over cornerback. Just look at Jalen Ramsey. Is Jordan worth the Love? Do NOT pass on Simmons! Draft's cleanest prospect? (2) Detroit CAN'T take Jeff Okudah over Isaiah Simmons or Derrick Brown - Isaiah Simmons is an absolute freak and will be a star in the NFL. Derrick Brown is a devastating force up front who could've been a first-rounder last year, but he returned to Auburn and got even better. Either player should, in theory, be a huge boon to Matt Patricia, who got his gig as Lions head coach due to his purported defensive chops. (Side note: Detroit just finished 26th in scoring defense and 31st in total D.) Draft Simmons and have fun deploying him all over the field as a roving nightmare. Plug Brown into a defensive front that significantly disappointed last season. I back both potential selections at No. 3 overall. But the pick I can't support is the pick EVERY mock drafter is making ... Detroit cannot take Jeff Okudah over Simmons and Brown. Originally, I thought No. 3 would be a sweet spot for a trade. And maybe it still will be. But the ambiguity around Tua Tagovailoa's health clouds the calculus for any QB-needy team looking to move up. So, more and more, I'm thinking Detroit will actually be making this pick. Throughout much of this draft process, Okudah has been advertised as the top cornerback in this draft class by a comfortable margin, but that's just not the case -- at least when you speak with many of the people who will actually be making the picks. A bevy of NFL executives I've polled have Okudah on the same level at corner as CJ Henderson, who hasn't been receiving any top-three buzz at all. Okudah at No. 5 after a trade-down? We can talk about it. But 3 is a reach. What happens if the Lions do take Okudah, though? How far will Simmons and Brown fall? Simmons is going to be a game-changer. If Detroit passes, the Giants should pounce at No. 4. Truthfully, though, Dave Gettleman will probably pick an offensive lineman. I think it will be Tristan Wirfs. The Chargers, picking at No. 6, would be a thrilling landing spot for Simmons. Can you imagine this Swiss Army Knife joining hyper-versatile 23-year-old Derwin James? Could this defense, with enticing talent at all levels, become the league's best? I can't see Simmons getting past the Panthers at No. 7 -- that feels like his absolute floor. And look, Brown is legit. Watch the game tape and stop fixating on the numbers he posted at the "Underwear Olympics." Three-cone? I'd rather talk about ice cream cones. Or David Cone. Would you believe that four years ago, Simmons couldn’t even get Arkansas to make him an offer? The Razorbacks were Simmons’ first choice, but – stop me if you’ve heard this one before – Arkansas’ staff reportedly couldn’t decide what position they’d play Simmons at. So they passed. Simmons, from the same Olathe North High School that produced the likewise criminally overlooked Darren Sproles, was being pursued, but perhaps not doggedly, by local schools Kansas, Kansas State and Missouri. His process picked up late when Jim Harbaugh made a home visit. And then fate interceded when Clemson DC Brent Venables called recruiting analyst Jeremy Crabtree, located in Kansas City, and asked if there were any overlooked LB/S types in the area. Venables had one scholarship left to give out for the cycle and was looking to flesh out his defensive class. Crabtree had seen Simmons live and couldn’t understand why he hadn’t been nationally recruited from the start. And that’s the story of how college football’s most creative big-game defensive coordinator got matched up with college football’s most devastating defensive chess piece. Jeremy Crabtree, millionaire matchmaker, probably deserves a championship share. Simmons is listed as a linebacker, but that’s highly misleading. You don’t draft him to play a traditional off-ball role. You draft him to move him all over the place, erase opponents, and tick off opposing offensive coordinators. He’s a defensive weapon. He primarily played safety as a freshman and primarily in the slot as a sophomore. "Defense," the dynamic hybrid defender said without skipping a beat. Simmons, who was listed as a linebacker, also played safety and edge rusher for Clemson. In fact, Simmons said he played as many as five different positions in a single game. After a Combine in which Simmons measured in at 6-foot-4, 238 pounds and ran a blazing 4.39-second 40-yard dash, it's easy to see why he's a perfect utility knife for a defense. "When we evaluate players, we're always trying to find out how much they can do," Baltimore Ravens general manager Eric DeCosta said at the Combine. "Can they play inside the box? Can they play on the edge? Can they drop? Can they rush the passer? Are they smart players? Can they play multiple positions? Can corners play safety? Can safeties play corner? All those types of things really do factor into the evaluation process. "They help you build a roster, No. 1. But on game day they also help you create different looks that confuse the offense. The one position that's never been more important is about to take center stage at the NFL combine (Multiple scouts told Yahoo Sports at the NFL scouting combine this week that three players in this year’s draft who figure to run fast — Clemson’s Isaiah Simmons, LSU’s Patrick Queen and Oklahoma’s Kenneth Murray Jr. — should be considered first-round locks, with Texas Tech’s Jordan Brooks potentially sneaking into the first-round mix, too. The players themselves already sense that, too. During sit-down interviews they did with Yahoo Sports this week, Queen, Murray and Simmons all said they believe their athleticism is boosting their draft stock. But no defensive player in this draft is as versatile as Simmons, whose athleticism was so impressive that he also played slot corner, edge rusher and even safety at times, with the latter being particularly impressive because he checked in at a monstrous 6-4 and 238 pounds at the combine. It all led to Simmons posting a ridiculous stat line of 102 tackles, eight sacks, nine pass breakups and three interceptions in 2019. “The biggest impact I see myself making is being able to cover the tight end, because that’s almost the name of the game now, who can cover whose tight end,” Simmons told Yahoo Sports. “If you can see the teams that were most successful this past year, they all had very good tight ends. I believe that’s a bit high for a cover corner, and I also believe, if the Lions ultimately stay in the slot, that they could do a better job addressing their myriad defensive needs by picking a player who can do many different things on a play-in, play-out basis. Clemson DW Isaiah Simmons is listed as a linebacker, but he’s actually a LB/S/slot hybrid who you can blitz off the edge when you absolutely need to get pressure on the quarterback. He’s a trump card, a queen on the chessboard… a defensive weapon. For a team like the Lions, which finished No. 28 in defensive DVOA in 2019 despite employing CB Darius Slay, I feel Simmons addresses more core issues than Okudah (and, if I may, I believe he's a slightly better prospect). None of which is to say that Detroit doesn’t need a corner. They absolutely do. His instincts, his insane athleticism in space and consistency as a tackler give him the ability to be the ultimate Swiss army knife for any team at the next level. He can accelerate extremely well and change direction on a dime, and his combination of fluidity and length makes him a valuable asset in coverage. Clemson certainly took advantage of his rare skillset, giving him over 200 snaps as an off-ball linebacker and as a slot cornerback, as well as over 100 snaps as a deep safety and a defensive lineman. Arguably one of the more misinformed takes is that Simmons should not be a high draft pick because he doesn’t have a set position: he’ll primarily be an off-ball linebacker, but he can play literally anywhere on the field. ISAIAH SIMMONS, CLEMSON (Draft Board Rank: 7th): Simmons is a different caliber of athlete from what we expect to see at the linebacker position altogether. Maybe that’s why we barely ever saw him playing traditional linebacker in Clemson’s innovative 3-1-7 defense. His alignment breakdown from this past season was the following. At 6-4, 230 pounds, being able to simply fill all those roles is nuts. Being able to fill all of them while still grading out at an elite level is freakish, and it’s why Simmons checks in so high on our draft board. He earned grades of 84.4 in run defense, 81.1 as a pass-rusher, and 88.2 in coverage this past season. And the stats are just as crazy as the grades. He got home for 30 pressures on only 73 pass-rushing snaps, allowed only 237 yards in his coverage all season, and only missed nine tackles on 94 attempts. There wasn’t a single thing Clemson asked him to do this year that he didn’t execute at a high-level. He very much is a Derwin James/Jamal Adams-esque hybrid player, but in a much larger frame. Arguably the biggest concern with Simmons is a corollary to his biggest strength — we don’t know what he’ll look like if asked to be a traditional linebacker. He simply doesn’t have much experience taking on blocks or making correct reads between the tackles. With how well he’s done everything else throughout his career though, we’re not that worried.) Simmons is unofficially 6-foot-4 and 230 pounds. Jabril Peppers was 5-11, 213 as measured at the Combine. That's a big difference. Peppers was playing a hybrid linebacker role out of position his final year at Michigan out of necessity. Simmons has the size to be a natural fit as both an on-the-ball or off-the-ball linebacker. His game also has some really good safety traits to it. He can cover and he's instinctive. He can line up in the slot and run with tight ends and running backs. NFL Draft Prospect Showdown: Championship Game (It's not often that a defender listed as a "linebacker" will have the most responsibility against one of the best slot receivers in the country, but Clemson LB/S Isaiah Simmons doesn't operate under traditional labels. Simmons is a skeleton key. While his closest official listing is linebacker, Simmons can play all over Clemson’s defense. With an eccentric coordinator like Brent Venables calling the shots, Simmons has found himself playing a number of positions for significant stretches this season. This chart from ESPN’s broadcast of the Clemson vs Ohio State match highlights Simmons’ versatility. He’s taken more snaps at slot cornerback than anywhere else, but has played at least 70 snaps in four different spots, and that doesn’t even entirely account for different coverages and assignments within those roles. The possibilities with Simmons are endless. Even the Ohio State game itself was an excellent microcosm. For the first half, Simmons was playing a fair amount of outside linebacker and nickel, but in the second half, Simmons was used more as a safety and middle of the field defender, both as a true safety and as a deep dropping linebacker. Here is Simmons playing from s split-safety position into the boundary. Clemson are showing blitz pre-snap, which would leave Simmons responsible for all of the final #2 (innermost WR of the two) in the route distribution, or at least for inside and vertical routes. Simmons is playing 10 yards off the scrimmage to help take away vertical routes, but anything that hits inside or shallow early can be a problem. In this clip, the outside receiver trails behind the slot receiver and instantly cuts across the field. Simmons has to see the switch and drive on the route in time to get there, which requires both a smart angle and requisite speed. True to form, Simmons gets there in time and stops the play for a two-yard gain, at best, to force a third-and-long. Venables also used Simmons’ flexibility to throw Ohio State QB Justin Fields for a loop, which eventually led to an interception Simmons snagged on the sideline. That Simmons can fly downhill like in the clip above as well as play middle of the field to sideline like he did when intercepting Fields in the playoff game is absurd. Simmons is important for this game in particular because he gives Clemson a weapon that can not only move all over the field, but if need be, hunker down at the nickel position to handle LSU slot WR Justin Jefferson. In the pure player vs player matchup, Jefferson likely comes out with a slight edge. For as wonderful as Simmons is, a slot WR of Jefferson's caliber should be able to have a solid day. The real value with Simmons, however, is that he can move around everywhere and should provide unique solutions to problems that 15-or-so other defenses have not been able to solve against LSU this season.) When you watch Simmons play, you realize he’s that and then some, but on the defensive side of the ball. For the year, he logged 808 total defensive snaps, with 104 coming from the defensive line, 203 coming as a box linebacker, 230 coming from a slot cornerback alignment, 106 as a free safety, six snaps as a wide cornerback and another 159 snaps on a variety of special teams’ units. Fans will be forced to take their eye off the ball to follow two dazzling defenders —Clemson senior Swiss Army knife Isaiah Simmons and Ohio State defensive end Chase Young. Simmons won the Butkus Award, which is presented annually to the nation’s top linebacker. However, that position label does not sufficiently denote his full job description. He is the most powerful hybrid engine ever assembled. Simmons is strong and explosive enough to tussle with tackles and rush the passer off the edge. He can plug holes in the box to stuff the run. 2020 NFL Draft Stock - Week 14 (Up - Isaiah Simmons, LB, Clemson: Simmons looks like a future top-20 pick, and his tape versus South Carolina will help him to selected early in the 2020 NFL Draft. Simmons was all over the field against the Gamecocks, showing his ability to be a dynamic defender. He started his day with a tackle for a loss on a stretch run and by filling the hole on a run up the middle. There really isn’t another prospect in the entire 2020 draft class who quite matches up with Isaiah Simmons for us. Is he a safety? A linebacker? A little of both? Oftentimes prospects who have unique skill sets will be unfairly nitpicked because they don’t fit neatly into pre-made boxes. But with the Clemson playmaker, we’re perfectly fine giving him his own box. After all, how many 6-4, 230-pound players move the way he does and impact games the way he does? Others, however, still want to see more of how he plays in coverage — both as a slot defender and deep safety — and also how he operates in the box taking on blocks against the run. This week’s game should provide some more evidence toward both of those.
Wake is coming off an upset loss to Virginia Tech and just lost No. 1 WR Sage Surratt for the season, with fellow WR Scotty Washington (who missed the last game with an undisclosed injury) also banged up. That might force the Deacons to lean on their three-headed ground game a bit more and use big QB Jamie Newman more as a runner. That might be one way to slow down the Tigers’ high-powered offense, which has picked up the past month or so. But part of Simmons’ duties have been to cover the slot, which is actually the defensive location he’s found himself in the most snaps this season. Demon Deacons WR Kendall Hinton quietly has had a very nice season and does the vast majority of his work inside. He was targeted 15 times against the Hokies and turned in a 20-target game earlier this season in the shootout loss to Louisville. Simmons could be a busy man on Saturday. Five possible Detroit Lions 2020 draft prospects: Week 11 (Isaiah Simmons, LB, Clemson (No. 11): Let's get this out of the way: I don't know what position Simmons projects to as a professional. At Clemson, he plays off the ball as an outside linebacker, but with the wide hashes in the college game, that doesn't necessarily translate to the next level. Simmons is tall, 6-foot-4, but also light for a linebacker, weighing 230 pounds. It's unclear how he'd handle filling the run gaps between the tackles, but his athleticism on the edge and in coverage is rare. Think of him as a far better version of what the Lions hoped Miles Killebrew would become. So far this season, the do-everything Butkus finalists has 66 tackles, 6.0 sacks, four pass defenses and two forced fumbles. 2020 NFL Draft: Clemson’s Isaiah Simmons shines yet again (Week 8 of college football is now in the rear-view and my biggest takeaway from the slate of games that occurred is that Clemson’s elite defender, Isaiah Simmons, is a certified top-10 2020 NFL draft prospect. Coming into the season, there was some concern about Simmons’ draft prospectus, as questions arose on whether he was a linebacker or a safety. The answer is that he is a football player: one who can excel in various roles. His sideline-to-sideline speed and a knack for making plays is superb. He is clearly the best overall player in the ACC and he may very well be the best defensive player in college football, not named Chase Young. Isaiah Simmons, Linebacker, Clemson. Simmons makes the list for the third time this season and rightfully so. Last Saturday, Simmons notched another brilliant performance, with 8 tackles, 2 sacks, and a pass defended. Simmons is a unicorn: a uniquely talented prospect possessing the speed and athleticism to be a fit for any defensive scheme. The video highlights Simmons’ ability to diagnose the play and the closing speed to bring down the Louisville quarterback for a sack.Simmons has been one of the best players in college football in 2019. He is the dynamic type of player that NFL defenses are seeking in today’s game. If he continues to play at his current level, there is a strong chance that Simmons could end up being a surefire top-10 selection in the 2020 NFL draft. NFL draft winners and losers: OSU's Chase Young, Jeffrey Okudah look like top-10 locks (Clemson’s hotly debated defender - Earlier I mentioned Clemson’s Simmons, who might be one of the more fascinating studies in the 2020 draft class. I had heard Simmons could leave school after last season as a redshirt sophomore, and based on my intelligence he would have figured somewhere into the top 40 or so selections had he gone. But Simmons returned for one more season with the Tigers and has emerged as one of the nation’s most versatile pieces. According to Pro Football Focus, Simmons has lined up in five different spots on defense — on the line as a rusher, as a box linebacker, back at safety and out in coverage at both outside corner and in the slot. Additionally, he’s also played extensively each game on four of Clemson’s core special-teams units: kick coverage, punt coverage, punt return and field-goal/extra-point block team. That speaks to Simmons’ exceptional versatility. Watching him anywhere on the field, it’s evident that he’s a plus athlete. With a 6-foot-4, 230-pound frame and great speed, Simmons would figure to fit the modern prototype for an NFL defenders. You can blitz him, drop him into coverage, ask him to be a run defender and also walk him out on backs, tight ends and even some receivers. Watch Simmons strike fast and decisively in defending the read-option Saturday against Louisville, just a terrific play against an athletic quarterback. And then a few series later, here’s Simmons covering the slot. Watch how he comes off his man on the pick route, erases the screen pass and knocks the ball loose. You can see this type of playmaking all over Simmons’ tape. But there are still questions about where he fits best in an NFL scheme and whether he has the take-on strength to consistently play near the line of scrimmage. He’s regarded as a bit upright and could use better technique when engaging with bigger, stronger blockers. We find some of those nitpicks to be a bit harsh, as Simmons’ combination of physical gifts, versatility and playmaking ability are just very hard to find. At this point, it would be surprising if Simmons isn’t a first-round pick — and possibly a high one. He’s the Tigers’ leader this season in tackles (56), tackles for loss (10), sacks (six, for minus-42 yards) and what the staff grades as “quality plays,” after watching the tape (eight). Simmons doesn’t have an interception yet this season, but he’s second on the team in passes broken up (four) and has a forced fumble and a fumble recovery. Most NFL scouts appear to be evaluating Simmons as a linebacker first, but his versatility must be factored into his overall assessment.
