2020 NFL Draft: Biggest pro and con for every top offensive lineman prospect (T JEDRICK WILLS JR., ALABAMA (PFF Draft Board rank: 11):  Biggest Pro: Explosiveness and change of direction.  Wills’ explosiveness and agility jumps off the screen when watching him in both pass-pro and when run-blocking. He moved guys like a snowplow as a run-blocker — Wills had a 90.5 run-block grade this past year that was sixth in the FBS and had more big-time blocks (PFF’s highest-graded blocks) than anyone in the class.  Biggest Con: Base in pass-pro.  Wills explodes out of his pass sets and gets depth but has a bit of a wide base that makes him susceptible to bull rushes — this led to him giving up 13 pressures this past season. He had a great pass-block grade of 82.5, but it might take him time to get his pass-pro up to elite status like his run-blocking, which makes him OT3 on our board.) 2020 NFL Draft: PFF's High-Floor/Low-Ceiling Team (RT – JEDRICK WILLS JR., ALABAMA:  The level of agility Wills has would be a minor miracle to see never translate to pass protection in the NFL. He’s also not even 21 years old and earned an 82.5 pass-blocking grade this past season and a 90.5 run-blocking grade. He’s not as polished as Thomas, but he can do anything you want physically.) Without basically any of the physical or technical development that college coaching brings, Thomas was already above average compared to his peers.) (PICKING UP STUNTS):  There hasn’t been a college tackle prospect in the PFF era who has been as agile in passing off and picking up stunts as Wills. 2020 NFL Draft Superlatives: Offensive Line (BEST RUN BLOCKER: JEDRICK WILLS JR., ALABAMA - Honorable Mentions: Netane Muti, Fresno State & Andrew Thomas, Georgia:  In terms of run-blocking grade, it’s very close at the top. Josh Jones (92.7), Andrew Thomas (91.4), Tristan Wirfs (91.0) and Wills (90.5) all earned elite grades this past fall, but it’s Wills’ pure explosiveness that gets him the nod. He registered a ridiculous 12 big-time blocks on the season. That’s more than even Mekhi Becton (11). And that’s against the top competition in the SEC, as well. OT Tristan Wirfs, Iowa.  6-5, 320. 4.85 Combine 40.  Stats/breakdown: Finished up in 2019 starting 13 games – 10 on the right side, three on the left. First true freshman in the Kirk Ferentz era as head coach to start at either tackle position.  Where he could fit Lions: Primarily a right tackle, but athleticism and natural ability allowed him to play both sides. It's likely he'd have to fall deep into the first round for the Lions to get a shot at him with an extra pick via a trade.) Touchdown Wire's 2020 NFL Draft rankings: Top 25 offensive players (5. Jedrick Wills Jr., OT, Alabama:  Similar to the wide receiver position, the offensive tackle group has great talent at the top, so ranking the “Big Four” tackles might come down to a matter of scheme fit or team needs. We can start with Wills, the Alabama right tackle who has been a mainstay on their offensive line the past two seasons. He gave up a single sack and just five quarterback hits during his career with the Crimson Tide. Wills is also a dominant player in the run game, and he has the power to handle gap/man assignments but also the footwork and agility to function well in a zone blocking scheme. What might hurt him in the eyes of some is that he has spent his career at right tackle, and teams looking for a LT might look at someone with more experience at that spot.) Thor's Tackle Rankings (3. OT Jared Wills - Comp: Jason Peters.  Alabama pilfered Wills, a native of Lexington, Kentucky, out of the backyard of the Kentucky Wildcats in the class of 2017. A five-star recruit and top-25 overall prospect, Wills saw regular playing time for the first time as a sophomore, starting 15 games at RT while posting a ho-hum PFF grade of 68.7. He returned to start at RT last year and was arguably the most improved lineman in the country (86.9).  Even when he wasn’t playing as well, the athleticism was obvious. So was the hostility. Wills attacks. He’s a 320-pound champagne cork off the snap, and he’s looking for blood from there. His punch may be the most ferocious in the class, and he violently uncoils through contact with those quick feet churning to escort his man backwards.  You rarely see Wills lose a run-blocking rep. His 90.1 PFF run-blocking grade last year was elite. With the power of a snowplow and the feet of a four-wheeler, Wills projects as an elite run-blocker at right tackle in the NFL, the position he played at Alabama. His pro team could decide to work him at guard to start.  If there’s an area to work on, it’s in pass-pro. Wills has a guard-like build, on the shorter side for a tackle and a bit stocky. Without length to use as a weapon, he instead sets up lightning quick off the snap and gets very wide off the edge, forcing his man to take a very wide angle if he wants to beat him with speed. (Spoiler alert: Nobody is beating Wills with power).  On engagement, he uses his prodigious punch to keep separation and dictate terms. But Wills is clearly still raw in this area. Between the wide berth and the inclination to strike, he sometimes gets out over his skis, and that’s where he can be beat, crossing him up with a counter. AJ Schulte’s Top-20 offensive tackles in the 2020 NFL Draft (1. Jedrick Wills, Alabama (Top-10):  Jedrick Wills is a stud offensive tackle. Wills has excellent footwork to mirror pass rushers out wide at all angles. His pass sets are things of beauty, and he can execute just about every set in the books. Wills brings immense power to his game and is one of the cleanest tackles in recent memory. There’s really not a lot of things Wills cannot do as a tackle, and therefore is one of the easiest to project. At least six offensive tackles to be taken in round one of the 2020 Draft (Jedrick Wills, Alabama Crimson Tide (6’4 2/8″, 312 pounds):  Prior to the NFL Scouting Combine, Jedrick Wills was the highest-rated offensive lineman on most draft analysts’ big boards and was the first offensive tackle selected in most mock drafts. He produced good measurables in Indianapolis, which should cement his status to be a top-15 pick in the 2020 draft. Wills showcased great movement skills and is known for the nasty temperament that he brings to the table. He is a big, strong prospect with a bit of a mean streak and enjoys a physical brand of football. One interesting thing to note: information surfaced that some NFL teams saw Wills as an offensive guard at the next level.) All-Combine Team: Who shined at each position? (Jedrick Wills, Alabama (Best team fits: Washington Redskins, New York Jets, Cleveland Browns.):  As good as Wirfs was in his on-field workout, one could make a realistic argument that Wills was slightly better. Wills was a natural in every drill he ran, displaying excellent feet and hands that looked more like a Pro Bowl veteran than a college prospect. His fit with the Redskins comes as a result of Wills being capable enough to play either tackle position, especially if Trent Williams is indeed going to force his way out via trade.) Offensive linemen to target in free agency and the 2020 NFL Draft (The Blue Chips -Jedrick Wills:  From an athletic perspective, there aren’t too many tackles who can impress like Wills. As PFF lead draft analyst Mike Renner described him in the PFF Draft Guide: “Explosive no matter what he is doing. Moves more like a defensive lineman than an offensive lineman.” This past season at Alabama, Wills showed dominance in the run game with that athletic ability. He earned a 90.1 run-blocking grade, pairing it with a 79.8 pass-blocking grade that was nearly equal to what he recorded during the 2018 season (77.9). Building the perfect prototype offensive tackle in the 2020 NFL Draft (Lower Body Mechanics (Footwork) – Jedrick Wills, Alabama:  Jedrick Wills’ lower half is something to marvel over. His footwork is incredibly smooth and efficient, with no wasted movement. His hips are quick and clean, allowing for incredible movement in his lower half. He showed no limitations when dealing with speed rushers, which some tackles with poor lower body mechanics do. His foot cadence and balance is among the best I’ve seen. Wills is one of the cleanest tackles in recent memory and my clear favorite for OT1 of this 2020 NFL Draft offensive tackle class.) 2020 NFL Draft Stock - Combine (Down - Jedrick Wills, OT, Alabama:  Over the past few weeks, NFL teams have been holding their pre-combine meetings, with all of their scouts going over players and coming together on where they are being graded. Wills received a ton of hype at the end of the season and into the new year, but not all teams are has high on him. Team sources say Wills will go in the top 16, possibly as a top-12 selection, but some teams have him graded well behind Georgia's Andrew Thomas, Louisville's Mekhi Becton and Iowa's Tristan Wirfs. 2020 NFL Combine: Offensive Tackle Prospects, Invites, What To Watch For (1. Jedrick Wills, Alabama 6-5, 320 (Top ten overall):  Why He’s Here On The List: Just say this every year – he’s an Alabama offensive tackle. Out of central casting, he’s an NFL left tackle to build an entire line around with the bulk to handle himself just fine against the bulkier linemen, and the experience to get the job done in pass protection. There are other terrific-looking tackle prospects this year, but Wills is it. He’s what the NFL wants.  What The NFL Types Want To See: Just don’t be painful in the drills. There’s no real concern here, and there’s a chance he destroys a large portion of the workout, but as long as he’s fine and looks the part, everyone will be cool. However.  Bottom Line: It’s all there, and the knocks will all be nitpicking. He might not be as shiny or as fun as one of the quarterbacks or Chase Young, but you’re not totally insane to suggest that he might just be the best player in the draft. He’s the single most athletic offensive tackle prospect I’ve seen in my six years of grading college prospects. With some tackles, you think if they lost about 50 pounds, they could feasibly play tight end. I think Wills could legitimately do it at his weight right now — that’s the caliber of athlete we’re talking about. 2020 NFL Draft prospects similar to Super Bowl stars (Joe Staley (Comparison: Jedrick Wills, Alabama):  Staley is the technician's technician, a tackle who's had a long, highly productive career because the fundamentals are second nature to him. He plays low. His punch timing is perfect. He resets his hands quickly if they're swatted away. Offensive line coach's dream. Oh, and he's just athletic enough to get to dynamic outside rushers and packs a mean punch in the run game.  Wills is essentially the same player. Neither are truly "dancing bears" on the outside, but like Staley, Wills crouches outstandingly in pass protection and is robotic -- a good thing -- with his punches that jolt defensive linemen. He's very aware of stunts, never panics and is a bulldozer in the run game.) 2020 NFL Draft Musings: The falling draft stock of some Alabama prospects (OT Jedrick Wills Jr.:  From a positive standpoint, Wills is a nasty blocker who plays with a violent attitude and superior strength. He opens up running lanes, and once he gets his hands on opponents, it’s game over. The problems are stiffness, footwork off the edge, and the inability to block with proper pad level.  Wills does not play with good knee bend, struggles adjusting to opponents, and cannot slide off the edge in pass protection or block in motion. He’s a throwback type of right tackle from 15 years ago, not a Lane Johnson type of right tackle or, for that matter, a Tristan Wirfs type of right tackle.) Evaluating declaration decisions (OT Jedrick Wills (Alabama):  Wills has been producing for the Crimson Tide since his freshman season. He is dedicated to improving his craft in addition to his athletic traits. There is a serious argument for him to be the top offensive tackle prospect. His lateral quickness to handle exchanges is great. The Kentucky native has a quick first step and seals run plays well. 2020 NFL Draft: Identifying ideal landing spots for top SEC prospects (Jedrick Wills, OT, Alabama (Best fit: New York Giants (4th)):  Depending on who you ask, Georgia’s Andrew Thomas could very well be selected in this spot, but I have Jedrick Wills graded as my top tackle in this draft.   The oft-maligned Giants offensive line has seemingly tried everything to patch things together in the trenches, often to no avail. Nate Solder, signed to a massive free-agent deal in 2018, hasn’t quite lived up to his billing, and his bookend — Mike Remmers — is a less-than-ideal starter. Wills is a powerful mauler in the running game and displays nimble feet and athleticism in pass protection. 2020 Draft: Who's boosted stock most? (Jedrick Wills Jr, OT, Alabama:  Wills had an adequate 2018 season at right tackle for the Crimson Tide. Nothing he did screamed "future first-round pick." As a junior he's played with more power and balance in pass protection, a combination vital for young blockers once they reach the NFL level. Many struggle early on dealing with strong defensive linemen, and a good amount of early picks are further ahead blocking for the run than they are for the pass, which doesn't bode well in today's pass-crazy NFL.  At 6-foot-5 and 320 pounds, Wills will check the size box to play right tackle in the pros. And while he's not light-footed, his footwork isn't clumsy. He plays with tremendous knee bend.
