Best/worst-case projections for notable defensive NFL rookies (Jeff Okudah, CB, Detroit Lions (Drafted: Round 1, No. 3 overall, out of Ohio State.): Best-case scenario: He steps right in and fills the void created by the departure of Darius Slay. He uses his size and length to mirror and match the bigger wideouts in the division (Davante Adams, Allen Robinson). His physicality is also a tremendous asset in the run game. Worst-case scenario: He struggles to get his hands on the smaller, quicker wide receivers and displays the stiffness that showed up at the NFL Scouting Combine. He gives up some plays underneath but his recovery speed helps to minimize the damage. One training camp name to watch for every NFL team (Detroit Lions: CB Desmond Trufant - As part of their seeming charge to rid themselves of established defensive talent, the Lions traded cornerback Darius Slay to the Eagles in March for a couple of mid-round picks. Detroit selected Ohio State’s Jeff Okudah with the third overall pick, and Okudah is a natural fit for what was the NFL’s most man-heavy defense in 2019. The addition via free agency of former Falcons cornerback Desmond Trufant via a two-year, $21 million contract is a more interesting story. Atlanta did play man coverage on 39% of its snaps in 2019, the fifth-highest percentage in the league, and in man coverage, per Sports Info Solutions, Trufant allowed nine completions on 15 targets for 177 yards, two touchdowns, and two interceptions. Not bad numbers, but Trufant has been more of a zone cornerback throughout his career.
