NFC unsung heroes: Naming one under-the-radar stud on each team (Lions - Marvin Jones:  Oh, hey, another overlooked receiver on a bad team. In case Matt Patricia's firing didn't serve as a hint, the Lions were not very good in 2020, but Jones was still quite effective. He caught 76 passes for 978 yards and nine touchdowns (tied for eighth-most in the NFL among receivers), but his younger teammate, Kenny Golladay, usually gets the love from those casually familiar with Detroit beyond its place in the history of American manufacturing. Jones flourished when Golladay wasn't able to play in 2020; from Week 9 to Week 17, Jones caught 25 passes of 10-plus air yards (tied for second in that span) for 519 yards (ranking third) and five touchdowns (tied for second). Examining the new NFL coaching hires: Arthur Smith to Atlanta, David Culley to Houston and more (DETROIT LIONS: DAN CAMPBELL:  Campbell’s appointment was the most perplexing of this year’s round of hires. His experience is mostly as a tight ends coach, with a brief (5-2) stint replacing the fired Joe Philbin in Miami over five years ago as a head coach. With Matthew Stafford reportedly on his way out — knowledge that was available to Campbell before the hire — and one of the worst rosters in the league behind him, there’s a lot of work ahead of a man whose position group struggled in 2020, with Jared Cook’s fumble proving to be the turning point in the Saints’ divisional-round loss to the Bucs this month.  Campbell hired Anthony Lynn to be his offensive coordinator, and while Lynn has had some success as the Bills’ playcaller earlier in his career, his management of games in Los Angeles as a head coach will be a lot to overcome reputation-wise.  Aaron Glenn, the Lions’ new defensive coordinator, oversaw a very good Saints secondary over the past few years and appears to be a good hire. Ranking NFL's new head coaches: Jets, Eagles find best hires for 2021; Lions edge Texans for worst (7. Dan Campbell, Lions:  The Lions went from the defensive-minded, player-unfriendly Matt Patricia to the offensive-minded, rah-rah Campbell. Campbell, 44, has entrusted just-fired Chargers head coach Anthony Lynn as offensive coordinator and former Saints assistant Aaron Glenn as defensive coordinator.  First off, Detroit shouldn't have been roasted for hiring Campbell vs. a minority coach, given that it also hired two minority coordinators along with new GM Brad Holmes, the Rams' former college scouting director. Second, with that out of the way, Campbell and Lynn also are presented with an immediate big challenge with the looming transition from quarterback Matthew Stafford to likely a rookie.  The other hires were based on scheming brilliance and staffing experience, while Campbell, the one-time Dolphins interim head coach, is somewhere in limbo on that spectrum. He's a wild card like Meyer, only with nothing close to the same individual winning resume. Detroit Lions: They're willing to part with longtime QB Matthew Stafford, who hails from Texas, and could offer this year's No. 7 pick – it would very likely afford Houston the ability to draft a blue-chip quarterback prospect – as part of the package.
