Critically, whenever he faced a stiffer level of competition, Tolbert didn’t just maintain a high level of play but actually raised his game. His production and PFF grades improved each season, and he has experience playing both outside and in the slot. Tolbert reminded me a little of Carolina Panthers receiver Rashard Higgins, only he had significantly better workout numbers and comes with none of the rumored attitude baggage that Higgins does.) Jalen Tolbert, South Alabama (Height: 6’1″ (55th) Weight: 194 (34th), 40-Yard Dash: 4.49 seconds (51st), Vertical Jump: 36 inches (57th), Broad Jump: 10’93” (61st), 3-Cone Drill: 7.08 seconds (27th)): Bio: Jalen Tolbert was a three-sport athlete at McGill-Toolen Catholic High School in Mobile, Alabama, playing football, basketball and baseball. He did not start as a receiver until his senior year, and by then the bulk of recruiting for his class had taken place. He caught 37 passes for 696 yards and nine touchdowns that year, which saw more teams express interest late in the cycle. After originally committing to Jacksonville State, he switched to South Alabama over Michigan State and Vanderbilt. Thanks to a knee injury suffered during training camp, Tolbert redshirted as a freshman. As a redshirt freshman in 2018, he caught just five passes for 60 yards. During the 2019 campaign, Tolbert saw his production tick up a bit, as he caught 27 passes for 521 yards and six touchdowns. Then his production jumped off the charts, as he caught 64 passes for 1,085 yards and eight touchdowns in 2020, and 82 passes for 1,474 yards and eight touchdowns this past season. Stat to Know: Tolbert’s strength might be what he offers downfield. Per Pro Football Focus charting, he caught 16 deep passes last year, sixth-most among college receivers. Strengths: Tolbert is the ideal vertical X receiver, with the ability to separate downfield and win at the catch point. He showed the ability this past season to eat up pre-snap cushions and still work himself open in the downfield passing game. Take this play against Coastal Carolina. The cornerback has about ten yards of cushion pre-snap, but Tolbert erases that quickly with his long strides and explosive release. He gets even with the defender and, as the saying goes, if he’s even, he’s leaving. The pass is left to the inside of the field, but Tolbert — perhaps getting away with some hand fighting — gets himself under the ball for the huge play. Tolbert, perhaps due to his basketball background, has no problem playing the physical game. On quick-game routes such as slants, pivots and whips he is not fazed by contact, and plays through defenders to the catch point. He maintains that confidence in his hands even when working over the middle, or playing in the proverbial phone booth. Weaknesses: Tolbert could benefit from adding to his frame, as physical defenders will give him problems at the next level. While playing the bulk of his snaps on the outside, he saw a lot more off coverage than he did press-aligned defenders, so seeing press on a more down-to-down basis will require a bit of an adjustment. While the foundation is there as a route-runner, refinement would be a plus for him. He could do a better job of getting into his breaks, and accelerating out of them. Adding some full-body route running as well, such as using his eyes and shoulders to help sell defenders, would be another area he could refine. Conclusion: The potential is there and Tolbert has a good foundation to build upon at the next level. In the right environment, where he can carve out a defined role early while adding to his skill-set, he could be a steal on the second day of the draft. NFL draft prospects for the Lions to know in CFB Week 8 (Jalen Tolbert, WR, South Alabama: I studied Tolbert for the first time this past week, and I like what I see from the big Jaguars wideout. His production numbers are tough to ignore. At 6-foot-3 and 200 listed pounds, Tolbert is physically impressive. He uses his shoulders and hips very well with the ball in the air, and he’s got fantastic hands. USA isn’t blessed with accurate QB play but Tolbert has proven he can adjust to poorly thrown balls. There are some concentration drops on his game tape, but he’s got the ability to catch anything near him. Despite being South Alabama’s top target for the past two seasons, Tolbert continually beat his defenders in one-on-one coverage. College Football Wide Receiver Rankings 2021: Nevada, Memphis break through (10) Jalen Tolbert, South Alabama - Entering the season, Jalen Tolbert was one of the most underrated wide receivers in the nation. Five weeks in, that hasn’t changed. Tolbert hasn’t found the end zone yet this season, but he hasn’t been targeted there often. Instead, he’s been designated as a chain mover and field stretcher. That, he’s done very well. He’s currently one of the nation’s leaders in yards per catch, with 460 yards on just 20 receptions. To put his production into perspective, South Alabama quarterback Jake Bentley has thrown for just 927 yards. Tolbert has literally accounted for 50% of the team’s passing output. Defenses usually hone in on those kinds of receivers, but Tolbert simply keeps dominating the production. It’s a testament to his skill. After posting 64-1,085-8 in 2020, just about everyone -- including myself -- thought he was a goner. But he decided college was too fun to pass on his senior year, so Tolbert returned to Mobile, Alabama and began his final season for the Jaguars with a five-grab, 168-yard outing in a convincing win over Southern Mississippi. At 6-3 and 190 pounds, Tolbert is a sleek wideout with deceptive long speed who can hit homeruns on simple vertical routes or knife his way through traffic thanks to outstanding vision, surprising quicks, and plus contact balance. 2021 College Football Preseason All-Americans: Texas A&M dominate first-team honors (Wide Receiver: Jalen Tolbert, South Alabama - You won’t find many rosters of college football preseason All-Americans that include a wide receiver from South Alabama. So, why does one appear on ours? Jalen Tolbert is the top returning wide receiver in the nation ahead of the 2021 college football season. The numbers speak for themselves. Tolbert’s 1,085 receiving yards last fall were the most of any returning pass catcher in college football. He produced just under 100 yards per game, averaging 16.95 yards per catch. Those are elite numbers. Numbers, of course, can be manipulated to tell a story, and the old, disrespectful, “quality of opposition” argument rears its ugly head. However, turn on the tape, and it’s plain to see the star quality. At 6’3″ and 195 pounds, Tolbert has the ideal size for the position. In addition, he possesses exceptional speed, explosiveness, and elusiveness in the open field. Furthermore, he’s a willing-and-able blocker downfield. The junior managed to show that it was no fluke in 2020. The 6-foot-3, 195-pounder made plays deep downfield week-after-week for the Jaguars with the help of his body control and massive catch radius. Tolbert finished the year with a 79.2 PFF grade (13th among returning wideouts) and 15 receptions 20-plus yards downfield, tied with Jonathan Adams Jr. and DeVonta Smith for the most in the FBS. Tolbert also drew a DPI on five other deep targets, tying for the second-most in the FBS. He saw 15 targets over 10 yards downfield in 2020 that we charted as catchable but inaccurate, yet he hauled in 12 of those — quite frankly an absurd rate. Those 12 catches on such plays are tied for the 14th-most in a single-season over the last three years among FBS wide receivers.
