2023 NFL preseason Week 1 preview: Schedule, storylines and analysis for Friday's games (NEW YORK GIANTS AT DETROIT LIONS (7 P.M. ET) - Giants focus: Tre Hawkins III.  The Giants drafted Deonte Banks in the first round of the 2023 NFL Draft, but it has been sixth-round selection Tre Hawkins III who has been drawing the attention on social media throughout training camp. He earned a 78.3 PFF grade in his final season at Old Dominion. It’s going to be interesting to see if he sees time with the starters tonight and if he can continue to generate buzz with another strong performance.  Lions focus: Offensive rookies - The Lions liked running back Jahmyr Gibbs enough to not only select him with the 12th overall selection in the draft but also to quickly trade away D'Andre Swift after that. We know that Gibbs is a tremendous athlete and someone who can take any touch of the ball the distance, and we’ll likely see the Lions get him involved in the passing game early on. Top 10 must-see NFL rookies in 2023 preseason (Sam LaPorta, TE, Lions - LaPorta finished as my TE1 in the 2023 class. Naturally, I thought the Lions got a mega steal in the second round with him. There've been rave reviews on the Iowa product from Lions camp, and there was a gaping hole at tight end on the Lions roster, so LaPorta being a fixture of the pass game after Amon-Ra St. Brown will surprise exactly no one.   Like Kincaid, LaPorta should look impressive against some second and third teamers, although he, of course, will get some miniscule run with the Lions first-unit in the tiny audition that group will get in the preseason. 15 NFL Rookies Poised To Have an Immediate Impact in 2023, Including Zay Flowers and Sam LaPorta (Jack Campbell, LB; Sam LaPorta, TE; and Brian Branch, DB | Detroit Lions - We know running back Jahmyr Gibbs is ready for a significant role in the Lions’ offense after coming off the board at pick No. 12, but Detroit’s next three picks also appear on the verge of contributing during their rookie seasons.  Jack Campbell is a near lock to start next to fellow linebacker Alex Anzalone from Day 1. While he’s nominally competing with Malcolm Rodriguez and Derrick Barnes for a starting job, Campbell has drawn rave reviews at training camp and should play in the majority of base and nickel packages.  Sam LaPorta, meanwhile, could become Jared Goff’s No. 2 pass catcher by default. With Jameson Williams suspended for the first six games of the season, the Lions are searching for a complementary piece alongside Amon-Ra St. Brown.  While Josh Reynolds or Marvin Jones Jr. could take that role, Detroit would clearly prefer their young tight end step up early in 2023.  C.J. Gardner-Johnson was supposed to be the Lions’ slot corner, but Brian Branch has been so impressive as the club’s nickel that Detroit is considering moving Gardner-Johnson back to safety, as Dave Birkett of the Detroit Free Press recently reported.  “It’s early, but he’s one of those guys, you kind of see the lightbulb,” head coach Dan Campbell said of Branch earlier this summer. “What showed up on the tape in college is beginning to show up already up here quickly.
