NFL Week 1's big questions and takeaways from every game: Huge days for Sam Darnold, Kenneth Walker (Detroit 26, L.A. Rams 20 - Lions:  Has Detroit's secondary gotten better? Improving the defense, particularly the secondary, was an emphasis this offseason, but Rams receiver Cooper Kupp still managed to get 14 receptions for 110 receiving yards and a crucial fourth-quarter touchdown. The Lions secondary also gave up a 63-yard pass to Rams wideout Tyler Johnson to end the third quarter. The Lions did force an interception in the red zone at the end of the first half, but Rams QB Matthew Stafford picked the secondary apart in the second half of regulation, posting 198 of his 306 passing yards over the third and fourth quarters. This will be an area to watch this season for the Lions.  Buying or selling Jameson Williams' breakout performance: Buying. After an awkward start to his NFL career, interrupted by an ACL injury and a gambling suspension in his first two years, Williams looks poised for a breakout season. It showed against the Rams. Williams caught a 52-yard touchdown in the third quarter -- the longest TD catch of his career -- and finished with 100-plus receiving yards in a game for the first time. He displayed why he is expected to be a big part of the offense this season.  Describe the game in two words: A tone-setter. The Lions, who entered the 2024 season with Super Bowl aspirations, nearly fell flat front of the spirited home crowd, but closed out the Rams with a strong ground game in the end. Running backs David Montgomery and Jahmyr Gibbs each scored touchdowns, including Montgomery's clincher in overtime. However, it was a rough night for All-Pro wideout Amon-Ra St. Brown, who caught three of his six targets for just 13 receiving yards. -- Eric Woodyard):  https://www.espn.com/nfl/story/_/id/41108416/nfl-week-1-2024-questions-takeaways-lessons-stats-recap-every-game

What We Learned from Sunday's Week 1 games (Lions 26 Rams 20 - Grant Gordon's takeaways: 1. Montgomery mauls Rams for Lions' OT win. For four quarters, the Lions offense was largely stagnant other than Jameson Williams. Entering overtime, Detroit had a modest 293 yards of offense with 103 on the ground. Enter David Montgomery, who went full ravenous Lion, smashing the Rams defense for 45 yards on five carries, including the 1-yard game-winning score. Detroit won the OT coinflip and promptly marched 70 yards in 4 minutes 41 seconds, with 60 of those yards coming on the ground. Montgomery, who finished with 91 yards on 17 carries, woke up the Detroit offense in thundering fashion and put the Rams to sleep all in one emphatic drive. This was the epitome of running the ball down your opponent’s throat. It didn’t happen for much of the Lions’ opener, but it happened when it mattered most. Detroit squandered a 14-point lead only to rally back with the final nine points for a victory in the most emphatic fashion.  2. Stafford singing Motown blues again. Throughout his second return to Detroit after last season’s wild-card loss, Matthew Stafford was pummeled by the Lions’ pass rush. Nonetheless, he stood tall, surgically cutting up Detroit in a second-half rally that led L.A. back into the fight. He struggled a bit in the first half, which included a rare end zone interception, but he responded late. On the go-ahead drive late in the fourth quarter, Stafford (34 of 49 for 317 yards) was a brilliant 8 of 8 as he piloted the Rams on an 80-yard drive that concluded when he hit old buddy Cooper Kupp (who looked back to his old self with a 14-catch, 110-yard night) for a 9-yard TD. The L.A. offensive line was a question mark coming into the season and the injury riddled bunch (Joe Noteboom exited with an ankle injury) remains one. Stafford was limping in the first half, battered throughout, but his cast-iron toughness and ridiculous accuracy almost won the night. Unfortunately, Stafford, who was hit 12 times, pressured 14 and sacked twice, lost for the second straight game in his old stomping grounds.  3. Jameson’s career night not wasted. Detroit was looking for some separation and boy oh boy did Jameson Williams give them some. Williams torched Tre’Davious White for a 52-yard touchdown in the third quarter, leaving the veteran cornerback far behind in his wake. The score led to a 17-3 lead for Detroit, but it wasn’t enough separation as the Rams rallied to go ahead before the Lions sent it to OT on a late field goal. However, after Montgomery’s game-winner, Williams still was afforded plenty of postgame flowers. He turned in a career-best 121 yards on five catches. The Lions have been patient, waiting for the 2022 first-rounder to overcome injuries and a suspension. Sunday was a breakout night. Should Williams keep it going, the Lions have a vertical threat on an already potent offense.  Next Gen stat of the game: Rams defensive end Jared Verse had six QB pressures and a 26.1 pressure rate in his first NFL game.  NFL Research: Detroit won a game in overtime for the first time since Week 9, 2016, when Matthew Stafford threw a game-winning TD to Golden Tate.):  https://www.nfl.com/news/2024-nfl-season-week-1-what-we-learned-from-sunday-s-games

NFL Week 1 highlights: Lions beat Rams in overtime; Bears, Bucs secure wins:  https://www.foxsports.com/live-blog/nfl/nfl-week-1-highlights-live-updates-scores

NFL Week 1: What we learned from all 13 games on Sunday (LIONS 26, RAMS 20 (OT) - Rams: There might not be a better coach-QB combo in the NFC than Sean McVay and Matthew Stafford. On a night when their offensive line was devastated by injuries and then they lost wide receiver Puka Nacua, they somehow figured a way to generate just enough offense. The Rams used a ton of quick passes to offset the Lions' pass rush and quick throws to the outside to move the ball just enough. The fact that they can change their approach and philosophy on the fly to do whatever works is impressive. And the fact that they were able to generate 387 yards of offense (and 317 passing yards from Stafford) when they were so banged up and playing one of the NFC's best teams really bodes well for the rest of the season.  Lions: This wasn't necessarily the reason why they beat the Rams, but one of the best things to come out of the opener for the Lions is that they seemed to have fixed their biggest weakness from last season: the secondary. The additions of free agent Carlton Davis and first-round pick Terrion Arnold frustrated Stafford and the Rams receivers for most of the game. Other than one big play to Tyler Johnson (63 yards) and a late drive, they gave the Rams little room to operate and not many yards after the catch. And they really shut them down when they needed to in the end. Coupled with a strong Aidan Hutchinson-led pass rush, the Lions defense finally looks complete — which it definitely wasn't last season. If they've really fixed their biggest problem, it could be enough to help them to a return trip to the NFC championship, at least. — Vacchiano):  https://www.foxsports.com/stories/nfl/nfl-week-1-what-we-learned-all-13-games-sunday

Week 1 NFL Takeaways: Sam Darnold Exorcized Some Demons in Return to MetLife (That Detroit Lions win was stylistically impressive. The Lions have arguably the best offensive line in football. They have a bulldozer of a back in David Montgomery to complement Swiss Army knife Jahmyr Gibbs. So the idea of the Lions loading behind Taylor Decker, Frank Ragnow and Penei Sewell, and jamming it down an opponent’s throat in a critical spot should surprise just about no one. Stopping it is another matter altogether. What should become a really good Los Angeles Rams defense (tough to speak in absolutes on units in Week 1) couldn’t when it mattered on Sunday night. The Lions won the toss at the start of overtime, took the ball and, from there, things went like this: 12-yard reverse to Kalif Raymond, Montgomery off-tackle for 21 yards, Montgomery up the middle for nine, Jared Goff swing pass to Gibbs for 10, Gibbs on a counter for three, Montgomery on a draw for six, Montgomery up the middle for eight and, finally, Montgomery up the middle again for the game-winning one-yard touchdown.  Detroit covered 30 yards, and its only third down was a third-and-1 from the Rams’ 1 on the seventh play of an eight-play drive.  Add that to the job the Lions’ defensive front did behind Aidan Hutchinson (one sack, four quarterback hits) and Levi Onwuzurike (half a sack, two quarterback hits) in helping limit the Rams’ vaunted run game, and getting to Matthew Stafford in key spots, and it’s pretty clear Detroit will be good again for a lot of the same reasons it has been the past couple of years.  It’s tough to beat a team as good on the lines as these Lions are.  “At some point, I knew our willpower needed to show up, and it did in all three phases to get to OT and finish it there,” coach Dan Campbell says, via text. “David Montgomery and our OL took that game over and finished it. It wasn’t the cleanest game but we’re a resilient team … always will be!”):  https://www.si.com/nfl/week-one-nfl-takeaways-sam-darnold-exorcized-demons

NFL World Reacts to the Lions’ Thrilling Overtime Win Over the Rams: ‘Detroit Just Ran the Ball Down Their Throat’:  https://www.profootballnetwork.com/nfl-world-reacts-lions-overtime-win-rams-lifestyle/

NFL Game Recaps: Week 1, 2024 (Lions 26, Rams 20:  It’s astonishing that this game went to overtime. The Rams, down their starting tackles entering the evening, had such offensive line issues that they had to constantly shuffle around their blockers, as their backup left tackle and starting left guard were knocked out with injuries. Puka Nacua also got hurt, leaving the game in the second quarter. As a result of these injuries and a poor Matthew Stafford throw in the end zone prior to halftime, the Lions led 17-3 in the third quarter.  The Rams, somehow, clawed their way back into the game despite Jameson Williams making huge plays for the Lions. Stafford caught fire despite all of the absences, as he constantly connected with Cooper Kupp. He abused Terrion Arnold, who was flagged for multiple pass interferences. Following a Jared Goff interception in which he forced the issue in field goal range while up 17-13, Stafford engineered a go-ahead drive in which he completed all eight of his passes. And just like that, Detroit’s 17-3 lead completely vanished, as the Rams went up 20-17.  The Lions had one more chance in regulation. Goff hit some big plays to move into field goal range, but the drive stalled. A field goal later, this game was tied at 20 heading into overtime.  Detroit won the coin toss, and the Rams never saw the ball. The Lions ran the ball on all but one play in the extra session, as the exhausted Rams couldn’t do anything to stop David Montgomery and Jahmyr Gibbs. Montgomery eventually carried defenders to the 1-yard line and then crashed into the end zone, giving the Lions a 26-20 victory.  The Lions showed some nice resolve in this victory, as they didn’t play their best, but were able to overcome mistakes to prevail. It’s a mystery as to what happened to Amon-Ra St. Brown, who was completely silent in this game.  Speaking of resolve, the Rams somehow made this a thriller despite all of their injuries. They’re an underrated team and will be a playoff contender if they can get healthy.):  https://walterfootball.com/nflreview.php

CBS Grades (Grades - B+. Lions:  The Lions were on the ropes after blowing a 17-3 second half lead, but they pulled out the win by bullying the Rams down the stretch, including a game-winning drive in overtime that saw David Montgomery score a walk-off TD after carrying the ball four times for 41 yards in the extra period. The Lions offense kept the Rams confused by getting everyone involved: Four players caught at least three passes, including Jameson Williams, who exploded in the game for 121 yards and a touchdown on five receptions. Defensively, the Lions didn't shut down Matthew Stafford, but they did pressure him into several bad throws, including an incomplete pass a third down in the fourth quarter that would have clinched the win for the Rams. This was a well-rounded win by a Lions team that's now taken the first step toward getting back to the NFC title game.):  https://www.cbssports.com/nfl/news/nfl-week-1-grades-cowboys-earn-a-for-blowout-win-bengals-and-browns-both-receive-f-for-ugly-losses/
