Week 17 Predictions

PFN Rolfe (Detroit Lions (-4) at San Francisco 49ers - The NFL schedule-makers probably felt they had laid a perfect Week 17 Monday Night Football game when they scheduled this one. Unfortunately, the San Francisco 49ers are a shell of their former selves and out of the playoff picture.  In theory, this should be a walkover for a Lions team that could have a chance to clinch the division and No. 1 seed with a win. The metrics are firmly in favor of Detroit, with an advantage in all three phases of the game.  The 49ers’ schedule has been slightly harder, but not to a point where it significantly alters the way we look at the massive gulf between the two teams in terms of the numbers.  Lions -4 feels a bit too good to be true, and I am going to take it with pleasure at this point. SN Iyer (Lions (-3.5) at 49ers:  The Lions are more limping than leaping defensively, but their offense again has adjusted to carry a bigger burden of winning. SN Bender (Detroit Lions (-3.5) at San Francisco 49ers - The 49ers have been eliminated from playoff contention, so they will be relegated to spoiler mode in this NFC championship rematch. These are two top-10 statistical offenses, and the Lions have injuries on defense, so a shootout could be in the works. Jahmyr Gibbs had 154 total yards in his first game as the lead back for Detroit. CBS Sullivan (Lions at 49ers:  It's a shame that this is a dud of a matchup. At the start of the season, this was circled as possibly one of the top head-to-heads of the entire year and possibly an NFC Championship preview. However, the Niners have been run over by a reindeer and have been dealing with injuries wire-to-wire, which now has them mathematically eliminated from the playoffs. Meanwhile, the Lions should have no problem getting up for this game as they need to win out to secure the NFC North and the No. 1 seed in the conference, so we're expecting an all-out effort here. Detroit is a stellar 6-1 ATS on the road this season, which includes a 5-1 ATS record as a road favorite. CBS Dajani (I'll admit, I thought the Lions were going to stumble on the road against the Chicago Bears after the loss to the Bills, in which they lost multiple players due to injury. Instead, Jared Goff, Jahmyr Gibbs and Jameson Williams danced all over Chicago's defense. Six Week 1 starters from the Lions defense are currently on injured reserve. No team has ever been without that many Week 1 defensive starters in a playoff game. However, the Lions don't care. They are going to keep rolling.  This week, the Lions get a chance at some NFC Championship revenge against the lowly 49ers. San Francisco has already been eliminated from playoff contention, and is 0-2 in playoff rematches this season. Brock Purdy's offense hasn't scored more than 17 points in two straight weeks, and they are probably ready to turn their attention to 2025. The Lions are the only undefeated team on the road this season, and are an NFL-best 9-1 in prime-time games over the last three years.
