Biggest winners and losers from Saturday's Divisional Round NFL playoff games (Losers - 1. Lions head coach Dan Campbell: Detroit's coach has done a phenomenal job of changing the entire culture around this franchise over the last four seasons. Saturday's loss to Washington easily should be the toughest loss Campbell has endured during his tenure. This team went 15-2, earned the top seed in the NFC and overcame an assortment of injuries throughout the season. This was supposed to be the year when the Lions finally broke through and reached their first Super Bowl. Instead, they imploded in epic fashion in front of their home fans. It wasn't just the five turnovers and the inability contain Daniels and the Commanders offense. It was the way Washington overwhelmed a Lions team that has long prided itself on toughness. This could be the best shot Campbell ever had of winning a championship with this bunch, especially if both of his coordinators -- Ben Johnson on offense and Aaron Glenn on defense -- end up landing head-coaching jobs.  3. Lions quarterback Jared Goff: It was a long night for Goff, who couldn't find a way to keep pace with Daniels and the Commanders offense. Goff finished with four turnovers – a fumble and three interceptions – and it was two of those picks that devasted the Lions early in this game. The first was an interception that Washington safety Quan Martin snared in the second quarter and returned 40 yards for a touchdown that gave the Commanders a 24-14 lead. The second pick came when Goff tried to hit wide receiver Jameson Williams on a long post pattern late in that same quarter, only to see Washington cornerback Mike Sainristil undercut the route and grab the pass in the end zone. Those mistakes played a major role in the Lions trailing 31-21 at halftime. They could never catch the Commanders after that, not with Goff forced to throw on nearly every down. He's enjoyed a great season, one that saw him play at an MVP level at various stretches. The problem was the Lions needed that same player in this contest, and he simply didn't show up.  5. Lions defense: There haven't been many games where you could see the Lions feeling the toll of countless injuries on defense. Unfortunately for Detroit, Saturday's loss to Washington was one of them. As much as the Lions believed they could overcome anything, it was apparent that they didn't have enough juice on defense to deal with what the Commanders threw at them. The Lions had a substantial number of key defensive players land on injured reserve at some point this season, including defensive end Aidan Hutchinson. It also was no secret that Detroit had trouble containing mobile quarterbacks all season, and Daniels proved to be too much to handle. It wasn't just that the rookie played well. It was that he made playing well look effortless against a team that was primed to win a championship this season. The one thing the Lions always believed was that their offense could score with any team in the league. (Lions Super Bowl window is closed - Overreaction or reality: Overreaction.  The Lions were the team to beat in the NFC with the No. 1 seed and a 15-2 record. This was their best chance to win a Super Bowl, and they were in position to win one with the playoffs going through Detroit. With this divisional playoff loss to the Commanders, is the Super Bowl window closed?   The core of this team with Jared Goff, Amon-Ra St. Brown, Jahmyr Gibbs and Penei Sewell are back. Aidan Hutchinson and many other key defensive starters will be healthy as well (the Lions had six defensive starters on injured reserve and 16 total players). Detroit still has a top-three offensive line in football and one of the most explosive offenses, whether Ben Johnson returns as offensive coordinator or not.   The Lions will lose some key coaches (Johnson and defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn most likely), so they'll take a hit there. There are some questions whether Goff is good enough to win this team a Super Bowl, but this team will be in the mix to compete for a Super Bowl in 2025. The window is not closed yet.  Jared Goff isn't good enough to win the Lions a Super Bowl - Overreaction or reality: Overreaction.  Goff is a good enough quarterback to win Detroit a Super Bowl championship, but turnovers and subpar play in big games have been his downfall. Goff threw three interceptions -- one returned for a touchdown -- and had a fumble lost in Saturday's loss to the Commanders. The Lions may have to protect Goff from himself going forward, making him a game manager in big games instead of a gun slinger. Goff has been to a Super Bowl and two conference championship games in his career, yet has a 4-5 postseason record. Heading into Saturday, Goff's 0.6 interception rate was the lowest in NFL playoff history -- which evaporated because of his poor performance. Detroit committed to Goff and gave him $53 million a year for the next four years. They'll roll with Goff going forward and Goff will have multiple opportunities to avenge this playoff loss. Divisional round winners and losers: Daniels stars (Loser: Jared Goff. As good as Saturday night was for Daniels, it was equally that bad for Goff, who once again came up short in a big game. Goff's rocky night included a pick six, an interception in the end zone just before halftime and an interception late in the game when the Lions were trying to pull off a miracle comeback. Goff also committed a fumble in the first quarter that set up Washington's first touchdown.  Goff is now 4-5 in the playoffs dating to his years with the Rams, who traded him to Detroit after Los Angeles coach Sean McVay apparently decided that Goff wasn't capable of winning it all. The Lions may be thinking the same thing after Saturday night. The Lions appear married to Goff, however, after they signed him to a four-year extension last offseason. Loser: Lions defense.  Detroit's defense was the team's biggest question mark entering the playoffs, and it was the main reason why the Lions joined the 2011 Packers as the only 15-win teams to lose their first playoff game. The unit, which has dealt with a myriad of injuries, simply couldn't hang with Daniels and the Commanders offense. Specifically, the Lions' pass rush was an issue that was never solved after Aidan Hutchinson suffered a season-ending injury in Week 5. The Lions struggled to put pressure on Daniels, who was not sacked. NFL Game Recaps: 2024 Playoffs (The Lions figured that overcoming their defensive injuries would be their greatest challenge entering the playoffs, but little did they know that it would be turnovers. Detroit was very careless with the football, committing four turnovers prior to garbage time, including three in the opening half. Jared Goff lost a fumble on a strip-sack, then was pick-sixed on a high throw. And just before intermission, a potential scoring drive was ruined when Goff threw an interception into the end zone.  Thanks to the trio of turnovers, the Redskins led at halftime, 31-21. The Lions looked like they’d have a chance to claw back when they lucked into a touchdown drive, thanks to a terrible face mask penalty on a David Montgomery third-down run. Jahmyr Gibbs ran into the end zone to trim the margin to three. However, the Redskins bounced back with a Jayden Daniels fourth-down scramble conversion. Detroit then gifted the Redskins a first down because they had 12 men on the field on fourth down. Brian Robinson plunged into the end zone to extend the lead to 10.  The Lions had to try to draw to within three once again, but that’s when the fourth turnover occurred. Ben Johnson’s nifty play-calling finally backfired, as Jameson Williams threw a horrible interception into heavy coverage. Daniels responded by converting yet another fourth down on a pass to Terry McLaurin. Jeremy McNichols eventually carried defenders into the end zone to give the Redskins an insurmountable 17-point advantage.  This was a huge disappointment for the Lions. Their defense looked gassed without Aidan Hutchinson and the other missing players, but the offense sabotaged a potential victory with the four turnovers.  You can see the stats below to know that Daniels was incredible.
