NFL training camp is here! Biggest storylines, roster projections and previews for all 32 teams (Detroit Lions - Biggest storyline: Has Detroit's Super Bowl window closed? From 2023 to 2025, the Lions entered the season as legitimate Super Bowl contenders. However, they fell way short of expectations in 2025 and were faced with a lot of decisions to make this offseason. For starters, Detroit has hired Drew Petzing as the new offensive coordinator and retooled the offensive line after releasing veteran linemen Taylor Decker and Graham Glasgow. The NFL's best RB duos for 2026, ranked (2. Jahmyr Gibbs and Isiah Pacheco, Lions:  This isn't exactly the most balanced duo considering Pacheco's ineffectiveness since his 2024 leg injury, but Gibbs is just that good. If he's not the best back in the league, it's only because a guy in the No. 1 pairing on our list also exists. Gibbs has topped 5.0 yards per carry in each of his three NFL seasons, racking up 49 total touchdowns along the way. He finally took over the true lead role in the backfield last season and fully exploded as a receiver, picking up more catches (77) than he had targets in either of his first two years in the NFL. Ranking best, worst backup QB situations for contenders (15. Detroit Lions (+1900) - Starter: Jared Goff,Backups: Teddy Bridgewater, Luke Altmyer (UDFA):  Not that long ago, Teddy Bridgewater was coaching high school football. After resigning from his post at Miami Northwestern Senior High School in August of last year, he signed on to be a backup for the Buccaneers and did see some action in Week 12 last season against the Rams. There, Bridgewater completed 53.3% of his throws for just 62 yards. The last time he started a game came back in Week 17 of the 2022 season as a member of the Dolphins. Now, Bridgewater is back in Detroit (where he served as a backup from 2023 to 2024) with the Lions and will likely serve as the top option behind Jared Goff, with undrafted rookie Luke Altmyer also in the fold. 2026 NFL Preview: Which 10 Teams Have The Best Roster Cores Entering The Season? (5.  Detroit Lions - Top five: QB Jared Goff, DE Aidan Hutchinson, WR Amon-Ra St. Brown, RB Jahmyr Gibbs, OT Penei Sewell.  The Lions have one of the most talented rosters in the league. Pro Bowl linebacker Jack Campbell, tight end Sam LaPorta and safety Brian Branch could have also been included on this list. Detroit has one of the most explosive offenses in the NFL, led by an efficient passer and expert executioner of the offense in Goff.  However, the question for the Lions is how enthusiastic head coach Dan Campbell will direct his coordinators to get the best out of the talent on both sides of the ball. I’m a believer in new offensive coordinator Drew Petzing, but it will be interesting to see how the offense changes with him at the controls. And defensive coordinator Kelvin Sheppard needs his defense to take another step in development. Ranking the 10 Best NFL Edge Rushers for 2026: Two Texans Land in the Top Six (4. Aidan Hutchinson, Detroit Lions:  After a leg injury limited him to five games in 2024, Hutchinson bounced back with the best season of his career in ’25. He led all defensive linemen by playing 950 snaps for the Lions last year. The 25-year-old racked up 14.5 sacks, the fourth-most in the NFL, and had 33 quarterback hits and 14 tackles for loss, all of which were career bests. He also tallied 63 pressures, the second-most in the league.  Hutchinson is a terrific athlete with an unremitting motor, and he didn’t lose a step in his return from injury. He ranked second in the NFL with four forced fumbles and was PFF’s fourth-highest-rated edge rusher for the ’25 season.
