Ranking the NFL’s highest-graded players in primetime (2. T Penei Sewell, Detroit Lions – 93.9.  Recently ranked as the NFL’s best tackle, Sewell has maintained that dominance into matchups on the biggest stage. His 93.9 overall PFF grade is culminated while playing a steep 1,232 primetime snaps over the last three seasons, the eighth-most among any player. Those have come over 19 night games for Detroit, a number that trails only the Chiefs, Bills and 49ers.  Sewell’s run-blocking has paved the way for his success in later windows, with his 95.7 grade ranking first among qualified offensive linemen. Likewise, he’s posted a solid 75.2 PFF pass-blocking mark, allowing only one sack on 665 such opportunities. 8. EDGE Aidan Hutchinson, Detroit Lions – 92.4.  Since being selected second overall in 2022, all Hutchinson has done is wreck games. That sentiment has applied to matchups with the best and brightest, where the Pro Bowler has feasted.  Over the last three seasons, Hutchinson’s 93.0 primetime PFF pass-rush grade is the top mark among any defensive player with 100 pass-rushing snaps. NFL position battles in 2026: Picks to win 12 notable training camp competitions (Detroit Lions
OFFENSIVE LINE - Right tackle: Blake Miller vs. Larry Borom.  Left guard: Christian Mahogany vs. Ben Bartch vs. Juice Scruggs vs. Miles Frazier.  It’s been assumed since the draft that Miller would walk into the starting spot, but don’t count out Borom, particularly if the rookie has a few rough outings in camp. General manager Brad Holmes glowed about Borom’s right tackle ability before the draft. Needing a hot start, Detroit could choose the veteran over the rookie early in the season. On the interior, Mahogany has the inside track, but given his struggles last year, it’s not a given he’s the Week 1 starter. If Mahogany doesn’t improve significantly, Bartch or Scruggs could swoop in and steal the gig. Given the important role the Lions’ offensive line will play in determining whether the team can turn things around following last year’s disappointment, these are key battles to track.  THE PICK: Miller/Bartch. The Lions drafted Miller to start and will give him some runway. The hope is Mahogany can win the gig, but last year’s issues are a legit concern. CBS Sports' top 10 players at every offensive position (Quarterbacks - T10.  Jared Goff Detroit Lions QB.  Points: 5 | Highest rank: 9 | Lowest rank: Unranked | Goff has been nothing but consistent during his time in the Motor City, with 4,400+ passing yards and at least 29 touchdown passes each of the past four seasons. He is excellent when the pocket is clean but can have major issues when it isn't. He was second in touchdown to interception ratio (34 to 8) last year.  Running backs - 2. Jahmyr Gibbs Detroit Lions RB.  Points: 112 | Highest rank: 1 | Lowest rank: 2 | Gibbs' leap to season includes 3,768 yards from scrimmage and 38 touchdowns scored over the past two seasons ... and that's with sharing time with David Montgomery. With Montgomery gone, Gibbs is in line for the biggest workload of his career. His game-breaking abilities are second to none.  Wide receivers - 5.  Amon-Ra St. Brown Detroit Lions WR.  Points: 68 | Highest rank: 5 | Lowest rank: 6 | St. Brown is as consistent as they come, and the expansion of his game has been impressive. Billed as a slot-only guy early in his career, Brown has 176 catches from the slot and 175 catches not from the slot over the past three years. He's extremely tough, willing to go over the middle and absorb a big hit, and he blocks, too.  Tight ends - 6.  Sam LaPorta Detroit Lions TE.  Points: 59 | Highest rank: 5 | Lowest rank: 7 | LaPorta's impact isn't in just his own numbers, which are considerable, but in his team's numbers. The Lions' offense declined last year with LaPorta injured (herniated disc). He's a strong blocker and a good receiver who can win downfield.  Offensive tackles - 1. Penei Sewell Detroit Lions OT.  Points: 116 | Highest rank: 1 | Lowest rank: 3 | Sewell is one of the standard bearers at the position, if not the standard bearer. The NFL's most dangerous pass rushes, ranked (8. Detroit Lions - Key contributors: Aidan Hutchinson, DJ Wonnum.  The defense has to be better in order for the Lions to get back into the playoffs. The onus falls on the rest of the unit rather than the edge rushers, though. Detroit should have full confidence that Hutchinson and Wonnum will do their part. That is all Hutchinson has ever done when healthy, and last year was his best. The hometown kid is rounding into a superstar. 4 Bold Predictions for the NFC North in 2026 (Lions Miss the Playoffs (Again) - Just a few short years ago, the Lions had a 24-7 halftime lead on the road against the San Francisco 49ers in the NFC title game. They blew that lead, and fell short of their first-ever trip to the Super Bowl. The next year, they soared to a franchise-record 15-2 record in the regular season, only to give up 45 points in a home divisional playoff loss after enjoying a first-round bye. Last year, a 9-8 record wasn’t good enough to make the postseason in a competitive NFC North.  Things won’t get any easier for Dan Campbell and his crew this year, as the Bears and Packers are expected to fight for the title, and the Vikings will continue to be a tough out with one of the league’s best coaching staffs.
