CBS Sports NFL roster rankings 2026: Rams lead league's top 16 teams, defending champion Seahawks are No. 2 (9. Detroit Lions:  The good: Running back -- Detroit just made Jahmyr Gibbs the highest-paid running back in the NFL and for good reason. The former first-round pick is a lightning rod out of the backfield and is primed for even more work after the Lions traded David Montgomery to the Texans this offseason. Even with a timeshare, Gibbs' 49 career touchdowns are the most in the first three seasons of a player in NFL history. He's also averaging 5.9 yards per touch over that stretch, which is tied for the second-highest by a player since 1970 (min. 750 touches). Gibbs is primed for what could be a record-setting year in 2026.  The bad: Secondary -- Injuries and off-the-field issues have put a huge dent in this group. At the corner, the Lions are without 2024 first-round pick Terrion Arnold, as they released him after he was charged with kidnapping and armed robbery. That leaves Rock Ya-Sin eyeing a starting role at corner, while D.J. Reed looks to rebound after an injury-filled season in 2025, which limited him to eight games. Meanwhile, the safety position remains in flux with Brian Branch (Achilles) and Kerby Joseph (knee) coming back from injuries.  The question: Right tackle -- The Lions selected Blake Miller with the No. 17 overall pick at the 2026 NFL Draft, and he's eyed as the Week 1 starter on the right side. This comes after Taylor Decker requested his release this offseason, prompting Penei Sewell to move to left tackle to replace him. Miller allowed just two sacks last season at Clemson in 504 pass-blocking snaps. OT Penei Sewell Detroit Lions - Greg Auman: Sewell is the oddsmakers’ favorite to win the Protector of the Year award, given to the NFL’s top offensive lineman, and he’ll do that as he tries to shift from right tackle to a new home at left tackle. It’s the same move the Tampa Bay Buccaneers' Tristan Wirfs has made successfully, and if it takes, it solidifies Sewell at the top of his position.
