NFL's Best QB Situations (7. Lions, Matthew Stafford:  Matthew Stafford and Clayton Kershaw were childhood teammates. Stafford probably can’t throw a curveball, but has only slightly less arm talent than his south-pawed friend. Stafford spins a ridiculous ball, and is capable of placing it just about anywhere. So if he’s sports soulmates with Kershaw, why does he sometimes insist on throwing like Byung-hyun Kim? Stafford makes amazing throws. He’s also prone to inexplicable ones, and too often misses his target when he goes into gunslinger mode. That’s one of the reasons why, despite all the arm talent in the world, Stafford has averaged just 24 scores over the past three seasons. Stafford has a way of making his game feel lacking even when he’s on it. This isn’t necessarily fair. Stafford has led two playoff teams, and has a 41-touchdown campaign on his résumé. He simply must rein in his blunders, and focus on what makes him great. Stafford isn’t paid to throw sliders. He’s got perhaps the league’s best fastball, and can paint the corners (deep dimes to Calvin Johnson) with the best of them. 2014 hinted at subtle improvement. Still only 27, Stafford will be quarterbacking in Detroit for many years to come. Rather quietly, however, Detroit may have more of a headache at DE. ​Ziggy Ansah, now headed into his third NFL season, has taken on the look of a star—his 7.5 sacks in 2014 finished behind only Suh for Detroit's team lead. The player who gets the nod opposite him is anyone's guess at the moment.George Johnson would have been penciled in for a starting gig, off a breakthrough 6.0-sack campaign. But oddly, the Lions left the door open for him to leave as a restricted free agent, and he did just that by signing with (and then being traded to) Tampa Bay. Now, pairing with Ansah will be a combination ofJason Jones, Devin Taylor, Larry Webster, Daryl Tapp and whichever scraps they can find in the coming couple months. (OLB Kyle Van Noy also should help.) Despite Ngata's presence some drop-off will occur from the tackle spots. The Lions can ill-afford to go through the motions at end, too. He was praised for his intelligence and range, and Jim Caldwell said he likes his skills and upside. Even before Johnson stepped onto the field, the Lions reportedly paid him a somewhat hefty signing bonus of $12,000. That suggests there are some expectations he will make the final roster.
