One question for every NFL team in rest of season
NFL (Detroit Lions: How will they handle Golden Tate's departure? Easy to defend the trade of the veteran wideout and equally easy to rip the move. What's less clear is how the offense will adapt minus its No. 1 receiver or how a team in the throes of a cultural sea change will react to a forward-looking decision that undermines the ability to win now.): https://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/nfl/2018/11/02/nfl-one-question-every-team-second-half-2018-season/1843024002/
NFL Week 9: Preview and Analysis for Each Sunday Game (Lions at Vikings: Adam Thielen and Stefon Diggs are the best receiving tandem in football, but it’s worth casting a spotlight on Kenny Golladay and Marvin Jones. Golladay is strong, long and athletic. The Vikings will almost certainly shadow him with top corner Xavier Rhodes and trust him to win one-on-one. Rhodes was back at practice Thursday so should play after missing last week. That frees up safety help for No. 2 corner Trae Waynes against Jones, who is a balletic route runner and acrobatic receiver. If the Vikings can keep Jones in check, Detroit’s offense will dry up.): https://www.si.com/nfl/2018/11/02/nfl-week-9-preview-analysis-news
Week 9 News and Notes: Browns’ New Plan for Baker Mayfield (4. Sunday’s game against the Lions is a big one for the 4-3-1 Vikings, and they have some moving parts. With Stefon Diggs on the shelf, the expectation is a bigger role for veteran journeyman Aldrick Robinson. And with Dalvin Cook working his way back from a hamstring injury, the plan is to get him about 20 snaps or so. 5. As for the Lions, the departure of Golden Tate should open opportunity for Kenny Golladay, though the second-year pro was already getting extra attention from defenses. And T.J. Jones is likely to get a good portion of the playing time that has opened up. Remember, it’s not like the Lions were dying to see Tate go—they’d offered him a new contract and drove a hard bargain with suitors on the trade market.): https://www.si.com/nfl/2018/11/04/week-9-news-notes-baker-mayfield-browns-coaching-sam-bradford-bruce-irvin-released-dalvin-cook

Week 9 Picks
SN Steele's Picks (Detroit Lions (3-4) at Minnesota Vikings (4-3-1): Sunday night’s loss to the Saints at home was a microcosm of the Vikings’ season: exciting, statistically proficient, good to very good at times, but nothing close to as great as expected going into the season. Beating the so-so Lions would reinforce that; so would losing to them. Kirk Cousins and Matthew Stafford, entering the league and getting their massive contracts at different times, are looking more like two peas in a pod every week. Prediction: Lions, 33-30): http://www.sportingnews.com/us/nfl/news/week-9-nfl-picks-predictions-rams-saints-lions-vikings-chargers-seahawks/1lbs6a62zn8wr1r6f1ka7ng50e
Freep Picks (Vikings 28, Lions 17; Vikings 31, Lions 20; Lions 16, Vikings 13; Vikings 23, Lions 17): https://www.freep.com/story/sports/nfl/lions/2018/11/03/detroit-lions-minnesota-vikings-predictions/1861882002/
SN Iyer's Picks (Detroit Lions at Minnesota Vikings (-5): The Vikings need to pick up the pieces after unraveling against the Saints, and Kirk Cousins will be up to the task with more support from the running game and receivers Adam Thielen and Stefon Diggs. The Lions will see Kerryon Johnson cool off, and Matthew Stafford will not be able to light it up well enough on road. PICK: Vikings win 31-23 and cover the spread.): http://www.sportingnews.com/us/nfl/news/week-9-nfl-picks-predictions-point-spreads-odds-lines-patriots-packers-steelers-ravens/huqiotqatgs11o80gl8wywuuj
NFL.com's Picks (Minnesota Vikings 27, Detroit Lions 16: The Lions are not tanking. Yes, they just suffered an ugly home loss to Seattle. And yes, in the wake of said loss, they traded Golden Tate. But they also traded for "Snacks" Harrison. And the Tate deal -- which netted Detroit a third-round pick -- felt like the kind of purely financial, big-picture move that's common in the NFL's salary-cap era. That said, it's OK to wonder where the spark on this offense will come from -- always thought of Tate as the igniter for this team. For the Lions to win in Minnesota -- and not to sound like a broken Motown 33 here -- they should get their running backs more involved. The lack of usage at times is mind-boggling. What the heck happened with Kerryon Johnson last week? One week after the rookie's 158-yard effort in Miami, the Lions barely ran him. Detroit's defense is suspect. Kirk Cousins will eat Lions defenders alive if they don't get down time, and perhaps fewer possessions to contain the Vikes' offense. Prediction: Adam Thielen passes the 100-yard mark again, on his last catch of the day. More important: Minnesota will be running Dalvin Cook on Sunday. We hope.): http://www.nfl.com/news/story/0ap3000000983218/article/nfl-week-9-game-picks-rams-lose-first-game-pats-top-packers
CBS Priso Picks (Lions at Vikings (-4.5): Neither of these teams looked good last week in losing. The Vikings haven't looked as good as expected on defense, but I think that will change here. The Lions have no offensive identity and the Vikings will take advantage of that. Look for Minnesota to get back on track. Pick: Vikings 24, Lions 16): https://www.cbssports.com/nfl/news/pete-priscos-week-9-picks-back-the-saints-at-home-against-unbeaten-rams-patriots-outlast-packers/
CBS Breech's Picks (Vikings 27-24 over Lions): https://www.cbssports.com/nfl/news/nfl-week-9-picks-saints-stun-undefeated-rams-packers-top-patriots-in-thriller/
CBS Wilson's Picks (Detroit at Minnesota: Which Lions team will show up in Minnesota? The one that beat the Patriots and Packers? Or the one that lost to the Jets and 49ers? It's impossible to trust this team for that reason and the defense, which was supposed to improve under Matt Patricia, is one of the league's worst. The Vikings (4-3-1), who are just a half-game behind the Bears atop the division and had their chances against the Saints on Sunday, are a much more consistent team. No, the defense isn't as good as it was a season ago, and yes, the offensive line needs to play better, but Kirk Cousins has proven he's worth the $84 million contract and Adam Thielen has already made a convincing case that he's the NFL's best wideout. Pick: Vikings 34, Lions 24): https://www.cbssports.com/nfl/news/week-9-nfl-odds-picks-saints-give-rams-first-loss-packers-get-past-patriots-steelers-beat-ravens/
Walterfootball Picks (Week 9 NFL Pick: Vikings 27, Lions 20): http://walterfootball.com/nflpicks2018_09early.php
NFL RealGM's Picks (Detroit at Minnesota (-5): This is one of those betting lines and moves I do not understand. On Monday morning, this game featured the Vikings as 6 or 6.5-point favorites at home over a Lions team which came out flat and got embarrassed at home by Seattle in Week 8. The line here is down to 5 but can be found at 4.5 in several books. In the meantime, Detroit dealt away leading receiver Golden Tate while the Vikings OL got healthier. Somehow that has improved the Lions odds, he says skeptically. He also says, as someone who covers the Lions on a daily basis, this Lions team is capable of any outcome on any given weekend. This is a team that beat the hell out of New England and waxed Aaron Rodgers and the Packers but is the only team to lose to the 49ers and got blown out by the Jets. He knows this and opts to back away from the betting trap. There is no reason Kirk Cousins and the Vikings shouldn’t win by at least 10, but this Lions season defies reason. Vikings 30, Lions 24): https://football.realgm.com/analysis/3090/Football-Meteorology-NFL-Picks-For-Week-9
PFT’s Week Nine picks (Lions at Vikings - MDS’s take: The Lions signaled by trading Golden Tate that they don’t think they’re NFC North contenders. They’ll confirm that on Sunday. MDS’s pick: Vikings 30, Lions 17. Florio’s take: The Lions are 2-0 in U.S. Bank Stadium. They won’t extend that streak to three. RB Index, Week 9 (Kerryon Johnson, Detroit Lions: Every year, we're crying out for Detroit to find its ground game. It took a while, but Johnson has filled the void. He's had two 100-yard rushing games so far this season, and it's no coincidence that the Lions (3-4) have won the games in which Johnson's recorded his three largest outputs. The Lions drafted Johnson, who is averaging 6.1 yards per carry, to be their bell cow and he's answered the call. He got more involved as a receiver against the Seahawks in Week 8 (six catches for 69 yards), showing he can also be an asset as a pass-catcher for Matthew Stafford. Expect to see more of everything from Johnson in the coming weeks. 15. Kerryon Johnson: Johnson slides down the list after the run game couldn't get going last week. The Lions can't afford poor performances on the ground.): http://www.nfl.com/news/story/0ap3000000981789/article/rb-index-week-9-chris-carson-poised-for-secondhalf-breakout
NFL Secret Superstars – Week 8 (A’SHAWN ROBINSON, DI, DETROIT LIONS: A’Shawn Robinson has strung together two consecutive games where he’s earned an overall grade above 90.0, recording seven total pressures and four defensive stops in the process. He’s also had just one game this season where he’s earned a single-game grade below 69.0, a testament to his consistency. Robinson is blossoming into one of the league’s top run defenders, as his 90.6 run-defense grade this season ranks sixth among defensive interiors with 150-plus defensive snaps. He is still a few paces off the league’s best as a pass-rusher, but as he continues to refine his craft, he comes closer to being a two-dimensional defender in the NFL.): https://www.profootballfocus.com/news/pro-nfl-secret-superstars-week-8
2018 NFL rookie rankings through Week 8 (2. DA’SHAWN HAND, DI, DETROIT LIONS (PFF Overall Grade: 89.4): Hand currently ranks ninth among 139 interior defenders who’ve played at least 50 defensive snaps this season in terms of overall grade. The former Nick Saban pupil has been a steady presence in the middle of Detroit’s defensive line all season long, grading over 70.0 in every game he’s played so far as a professional except one (57.3 in Week 3 against the New England Patriots). The fourth-round pick currently ranks 15th among interior defenders with 12 run stops – and he hasn’t missed a tackle in run defense yet – while also ranking 18th among the group with a 12.5 pressure percentage as a pass-rusher. Hand is one of just five interior defenders who currently own a pass rush grade of at least 80.0 while also owning a run defense grade of at least 75.0, putting him in a group with Aaron Donald, Fletcher Cox, Kenny Clark and Geno Atkins.): https://www.profootballfocus.com/news/pro-2018-nfl-rookie-rankings-through-week-8
The Logic Behind the Biggest Deals at the 2018 NFL Trade Deadline (Detroit logic: Tate was in a contract year, and while he seemed to exemplify what the Lions want in players—tough, competitive, hard-working—the price point at the position, even for a 30-year-old, was going to make it difficult to bring him back for a sixth year as a Lion. That said, Detroit would have been content, based on what he’s bringing to the table, to ride the year out. Some in the building are very surprised he was moved, and when I asked one if there was any problem with him he reiterated a point he’d previously made to me via text: “N.O.”” The compensation—vs. a comp pick, it’s more substantial and comes a year earlier—is what altered that plan.): https://www.si.com/nfl/2018/10/31/nfl-trade-deadline-2018-takeaways-analysis

Grading the NFL trade deadline's biggest deals: Lions, Redskins get high marks (The Eagles were desperate to add an offensive weapon at the deadline; and while Tate is certainly a weapon out of the slot, Philly was already getting solid production out of Nelson Agholor in that role. The Eagles parted ways with a third-round pick — which the cap-strapped team could have used to continue to fill out the roster — in order to marginally improve a position they were already solid at. Meanwhile, the Eagles are still in need of a starting running back, a field-stretching receiver and secondary help. Detroit was smart to unload Tate before he inevitably walked in free agency. It’s unlikely the Lions would have received anything more than a fifth-round compensatory pick for the free-agent-to-be, so getting a third-round pick for him, as well as nearly $4 million cap savings, has to be considered a major win. NFL curses: Who are most haunted teams, players? (Lions, Bengals and Bears, oh my: An intimidating, predatory mascot hardly translates to football fortune. The aforementioned Bengals have those two unsuccessful Super Bowl trips, yet haven't notched a playoff win since 1990, the longest active streak of futility in the league. Detroit is one of four teams (Browns, Jags, Texans) to never advance to the Super Bowl, and the Lions have just one postseason victory (1991) since the merger. (Google "Curse of Bobby Layne," kids.) Chicago has a proud history ... though eight of the franchise's nine titles predate the Super Bowl. Though no one will forget the '85 Bears, even their players feel they should've won another two to three rings. More recently, the (supposed) Monsters of the Midway have one playoff berth in the past dozen years.): https://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/nfl/2018/10/31/nfl-curses-halloween-haunted-browns-bengals-lions/1764391002/
