While the Raiders' offense also has its shortcomings, I like Derek Carr, Josh Jacobs and the rest of the Raiders rebounding at home while getting back to .500. The Raiders are home for the first time in a long time, while the Lions are out on the road for the first time in three weeks. The Raiders did some good things last week against the Texans, especially on offense. CBS Jeff Kerr (Detroit Lions (3-3-1) at Oakland Raiders (3-4): This is one of the hardest games to pick this week thanks to the Lions and Raiders being two of the surprise teams in the NFL. The Raiders are playing their first home game in Oakland since September 15, so they'll be extra motivated after a 49-day vacation. Oakland does average 285.3 pass yards allowed per game and will face a now one-dimensional Detroit offense in the wake of Kerryon Johnson's injury, but the Lions average 7.9 yards per pass and 282.7 pass yards (both fifth in the NFL). The Raiders can counter by keeping Detroit's offense off the field by challenging the run defense, which allows 130.7 rush yards per game. Josh Jacobs has handled the heavy workload averaging 5.0 yards per carry, a good sign against a Lions defense that allows 4.7. This one is a  toss-up, but the Raiders are at home and have a chance to make the AFC West race interesting. Jacobs will allow Oakland to run the ball better than Detroit, which is stuck with an ineffective committee. The silver-and-black faithful have watched from afar as Oakland went a respectable 2-3 during that stretch, the same record as that of Detroit over the last five games. Both teams can move the ball on offense, and neither team can consistently make stops on defense. The Raiders and Lions throw very well in very different ways, with Oakland looking like an early '80s West Coast outfit, while the Lions more closely resemble a 1960s AFL squad that loves the long ball. DE Terrell Lewis:  The Lions could use an edge rusher to go across from Trey Flowers, and this would be a good fit.  Lewis has 20 tackles, six sacks and two passes batted thus far this year. He has been a dynamic edge rusher, showing speed, power, length, and some moves.  Lewis was playing well in the 2017 season opener before sustaining an injury that cost him most of the season. He totaled just 16 tackles with a sack on the year, but scouts who watched 2018 spring football were raving about him. Sources believe Lewis has a ton of potential. Unfortunately, he tore his ACL in the summer of 2018, so he missed the 2018 season.  The edge defender, formerly known as Terrell Hall, developed behind the scenes for Alabama in 2016, but he could be poised for a breakout year now that he is healthy. Scouts have told me that the 6-foot-5, 247-pounder is big and quick, plus possesses surprising change-of-direction skills. They said that Lewis has a great build and is dripping with upside.) Draft Tek (18 Lions - LB Isaiah Simmons:  It seems we are in familiar territory, Lions' fans. After what seemed to be a team on the rise, Detroit's late-game defensive meltdowns against Arizona, Kansas City, Green Bay, and recently Minnesota, find the team at 3-3-1. In other words, they are in the proverbial "fork-in-the-road" situation. With the Packers at 7-1 and Minnesota at 6-2, Detroit finds themselves on a path to yet again miss the playoffs unless something drastic happens with their play on the field in the coming weeks. However, today, they had control of the direction for their season. Today (edit: this comment prepared on 10/29 the trade deadline) was the day to make something drastic happen. Something that could push them to the main goal of why Bob Quinn hired Matt Patricia in the first place --to make the playoffs. The ball was in their court, and they didn't take the shot. The Lions chose to stand pat with their current roster despite the defensive woes that are severely costing this team wins. Detroit currently ranks 7th-most in points allowed per game (26.6), 2nd-most in yards allowed per game (420.4) right behind the winless Cincinnati Bengals, and the 7th-most in yards per play allowed (6). In other words, the defense is getting gashed, despite the amount of money invested in it this past offseason. Not to mention the trading of Quandre Diggs now has Darius Slay upset. It's clearly a frustrating situation for everyone, player and fan alike.  Perhaps the most frustrating thing about these Lions is that it seems Quinn and Patricia cannot commit to a plan, and there are inconsistencies aplenty in that regard. If the team is in win-now mode, why was no move made to bolster a defense that desperately needs it? If Patricia was hired in to win big games and make the playoffs, why now in Year 2 of the Patricia Era are these Lions performing as if it's the Caldwell Era by, as Quinn put it, not "beating the really good teams" the day Caldwell was fired.
