Overall Grades and Analysis
SI Overall Grades (Head coach Matt Patricia is determined to shape the Lions into a Patriots-style offense, and obviously finding a five-tool tight end is a strong first step. It’s too much to say T.J. Hockenson will be the next Rob Gronkowski, but Hockenson is one of the highest-rated tight end prospects of this century. His blocking is even more touted than his receiving—an important note given Detroit’s two-decade-long effort to improve its feeble ground game. Friday’s picks were spent on buttressing the defensive back seven. Jahlani Tavai has the thumping size that Patricia, who also takes a Patriots-style approach on defense, covets. Will Harris provides crucial depth, as Patricia likes to play with three, and sometimes four, safeties on the field. The question is whether Harris can immediately take snaps from veteran Tavon Wilson, who is unlikely to be re-signed after this season. It will come down to how trusted Harris is in man coverages, either as a matchup player or roving middle-of-the-field defender. He isn’t needed in a major role right away considering last year’s third-rounder, Tracy Walker, is ready for fulltime centerfield duties and strong safety Quandre Diggs remains the best player that most fans have never heard of. The rest of the draft was focused on adding depth to a roster that, thanks to an active free agency, was not lacking in any particular first-string position. One player to keep an eye on is Amani Oruwariye, a long-armed press corner who, thanks to 2017 second-rounder Teez Tabor’s disconcerting inconsistency, could get a closer look than most fifth-round picks. Overall grade: B. Draft analysis: I love Hockenson as a two-way tight end prospect. He will be a strong target for Matthew Stafford and a nice blocker in the run game. But he wasn't the top player available: it was defensive tackle Ed Oliver. Time will tell which way they should have gone with that pick. Tavai was picked earlier than expected, much like Kyle Van Noy was a few years ago, though NFL scouts believe Tavai can become a starter. The Van Noy pick didn't work out for the Lions, but hopefully this one will. Trading up for Harris helped the Lions meet a need at safety and he was an appropriate value. Even with Trey Flowers in the fold, adding another pass rusher in Bryant made a lot of sense. Getting a big corner was a must, so I'm on board with the Oruwariye pick. The Lions needed the depth they added at running back and receiver, too -- and I can't fault them for taking Nauta in the seventh to join Hockenson. Silva's Grades (Overview: NT Damon Harrison is part of this class after Detroit acquired him for the No. 142 overall pick. Amid reports they preferred to trade down, the Lions stood pat and selected elite two-way tight end Hocksenson, who won the Mackey Award as a redshirt sophomore and adds a new dimension to OC Darrell Bevell’s offense. Although the Tavai pick was met with fanbase derision, draft guru Dane Brugler compared Tavai to a poor man’s Leighton Vander Esch before the draft as a versatile level-two defender capable of both run thumping in the middle and rushing off the edge. Harris’ college production was lacking, but he crushed the Combine for top-four SPARQ results among invited safeties, including a 4.41 forty time. Bryant was Clemson’s “No. 4” guy up front, overshadowed by Clelin Ferrell, Dexter Lawrence, and Christian Wilkins but highly productive in his own right with 35 career tackles for loss and 20 sacks. It would not be shocking if Bryant beat out Romeo Okwara for a starting job as a rookie. Oruwariye was one of my favorite day-three picks after a breakout senior year where he held opponents targeting him to a 52% completion rate, then blazed 4.47 with a twitchy 6.82 three-cone time at 6-foot-2, 205. He has a chance to be a steal. Johnson is one of the most-athletic backs in this class. Overall, I thought this was a rock-solid haul for GM Bob Quinn. Walterfootball Grades (Detroit Lions: B- Grade - Goals Entering the 2019 NFL Draft: The Lions are never going to have great success the way they are currently built, so they need to trade Matthew Stafford and begin from scratch. They won't do that, however, so the very best they can hope for next year is an 8-8 result. They'll continue to spin their tires and attempt to upgrade the many holes on their roster. There are very few areas that don't need to be upgraded, so "best player available" at every spot makes sense. 2019 NFL Draft Accomplishments: For a team that styles itself to be the Patriots of the midwest, the Lions don't do a very good job of emulating the NFL's current dynasty. I don't ever recall Bill Belichick using a first-round pick on a tight end, yet that's exactly what the Lions did, spending the eighth-overall selection on T.J. Hockenson. It's likely that the Iowa product will end up being a nice weapon for Matthew Stafford and whichever quarterback replaces him in the future, but using a top-eight choice on a tight end, especially when there was a blue-chip prospect like Ed Oliver still available, seemed like a massive blunder. The rest of the Lions' draft class actually wasn't too bad. The front office spent multiple selections on high-character players who filled needs. The four choices following Hockenson were all used to upgrade the defensive side of the ball, and the two best picks were safety Will Harris and cornerback Amani Oruwariye. None of these four selections, by the way, scored worse than a B- grade. The Lions made some mistakes late in the draft, but most of their picks were graded favorably. Picture Heath Miller, the unfailingly consistent two-phase contributor and former captain for the Steelers. He was Mr. Dependable for more than a decade in Pittsburgh, and we see the same type of contributor in Hockenson in Detroit. Is that worth the eight pick in the draft? We say yes, even with Ed Oliver on the board. Hockenson makes this offense more dynamic. Worst pick: Tavai. We actually believe Tavai could be a very interesting piece for the defense in time, but injury and character risks make this pick feel shaky – along with the fact that they might have had a shot at drafting him a full round later. Can he beat out Jarrad Davis in time at the “Mike” LB spot? Can Tavai play the weak side or steal reps from Devon Kennard? He has the versatility to do that, but we won’t really know where Tavai fits in until the pads go on. Spending the No. 43 pick on him was just higher than we would have liked to see. Overall: A pretty solid class, top to bottom. Hockenson is a Day 1 impact player, Harris and Oruwariye thicken the competition in the secondary and Bryant could be the surprise addition to the front seven that ends up making the most sense. But there were some value questions with a few of the picks, and the lack of an offensive lineman in the class was eye-opening. Doug Farrar's Grades (The Lions had a clear need at tight end, and though it might be a bit high to take Iowa’s T.J. Hockenson with the eighth overall pick, one can’t argue Hockenson’s complete skill set. In everything from blocking to route awareness, he’ll help this offense immensely. I was less excited about the second-round pick of Hawaii linebacker Jahlani Tavai, who doesn’t always match his on-field instincts with the athleticism needed to excel at the next level. The value pick here was Penn State’s Amani Oruwariye in the fifth round, and both Boston College safety Will Harris and Clemson defensive end Austin Bryant, taken in the middle rounds, provide good value for their selection range. PFF Grades and Analysis (Detroit Lions - Day 1: Detroit didn’t get great positional value by selecting former Iowa tight end TJ Hockenson at No. 8 overall in the 2019 NFL Draft, but they did at least get the best tight end in the class. He had the second-highest receiving grade among tight ends in college football this past year, dropping one pass on 51 catchable targets, and finished the pre-draft process as PFF’s No. 21 overall player. “He’s better than Eric Ebron. Even though he didn’t test out as freakishly as Ebron, this guy knows the nuances of the tight end position already. He knows how to run routes. He has very sure hands.” – Pro Football Focus’ Lead Draft Analyst Mike Renner. Day 2: The Lions picked up more value in the third round than they did in the second round of this year’s draft. Hawaii linebacker Jahlani Tavai is best against the run, but even his best isn’t anything to fall in love with at pick No. 43. Tavai entered the draft as PFF’s No. 237 overall player in the class. Boston College safety Will Harris, PFF’s No. 111 overall player in the draft, didn’t breach the top-50 in terms of overall grade, but he has turned in 74.0-plus overall grades as a primary player in Boston College’s defense in each of the past three years. Day 3: Penn State cornerback Amani Oruwariye, a long, athletic outside cornerback that settled in at No. 36 on PFF’s draft board, fell all the way down to pick No. 146 for reasons unknown. What we do know is that he may be the steal of the draft. Oruwariye had the best week of any corner at the Senior Bowl, notching the highest win rate among all defenders in the one-on-ones. PFF Grades and Analysis (Detroit Lions - Day 1: Detroit didn’t get great positional value by selecting former Iowa tight end TJ Hockenson at No. 8 overall in the 2019 NFL Draft, but they did at least get the best tight end in the class. He had the second-highest receiving grade among tight ends in college football this past year, dropping one pass on 51 catchable targets, and finished the pre-draft process as PFF’s No. 21 overall player. “He’s better than Eric Ebron. Even though he didn’t test out as freakishly as Ebron, this guy knows the nuances of the tight end position already. He knows how to run routes. He has very sure hands.” – Pro Football Focus’ Lead Draft Analyst Mike Renner. Day 2: The Lions picked up more value in the third round than they did in the second round of this year’s draft. Bryant is a long prospect who has all the atributes Matt Patricia and the Lions love in an edge piece. He can move around inside and out and be a truthfully versatile weapon. He's long, but he's likely situational as a pass-rusher to start his career while he refines his ability to become a run-stopper. Think of this as a backup to Trey Flowers and Romeo Okwara, a third edge-rusher who can be developed behind two players who know and fit the system well. Bryant made a name for himself this year during the College Football Playoff by having three tackles for loss (two sacks) against Notre Dame and then three tackles in the title game against Alabama. (OUTLOOK: Perhaps the greatest statement about just how much talent has been playing along the defensive line for Clemson is the fact that the prototypically-built Bryant - and his 35 career tackles for loss, 20 sacks and penchant for making big plays in big moments - is expected to be selected fourth among the Tigers' fearsome front. And yet Bryant is viewed by some as a potential first round pick. He looks the part of an NFL edge rusher with broad shoulders, a tapered, athletic frame and long limbs. Flashes excellent initial quickness, timing his get-off with the ball to cross the face of right tackles and showing the quickness to counter back inside. Equally explosive off the ball out of the two or three-point stance, offering his future NFL team a great deal of schematic versatility. A flexible athlete with the agility, bend and closing speed to be very effective on twists and stunts. Accelerates quickly, generating impressive power as a tackler, creating some big collisions and forcing two fumbles in 2017. Uses his long arms to lasso ball-carriers in the open field, wrapping them up for the secure stop. Shows some awareness of passing lanes, getting his hands up and showing good timing on his leaps to hamper the view of quarterbacks. Lack of playing time is evident in how long it takes him to process the action, too often hesitating and reacting only after the ball is moving. Does not currently show a wide variety of pass rush moves and hand technique, relying mostly on pure speed, a counter back inside, a bull rush and the variety of twists and stunts utilized by the Clemson coaching staff. With 6-1 size yet solid speed and a big play gene, it would be easy to see Oruwariye becoming the eventual "Robin" to Darius Slay's "Batman." (OUTLOOK: In 2017, Penn State was guided by an exceptional athlete in running back Saquon Barkley, a player widely regarded as the best in the country and one who ultimately earned the No. 2 overall pick of the 2018 NFL Draft by the New York Giants. Barkley accounted for over 2,000 all-purpose yards and led the league's rookies with 15 touchdowns. A year later and Penn State is offering a similarly spectacular athlete in Oruwariye, albeit one with much less fanfare and perhaps less likely to make quite as dramatic of an impact in the NFL as a rookie, given his position. Whereas Barkley was branded by some as a can't miss prospect dating back to high school, Oruwariye signed with Penn State as "just" a three star recruit and redshirted his first season on campus. Since then, however, he's developed into one of the country's most respected cornerbacks, earning Second Team All-Big Ten honors as a junior and ascending to First Team accolades in 2018, when he registered a career-high 50 tackles and 11 passes broken up, as well as three interceptions - including a highlight reel game-clincher in the end zone during overtime in the first game of the season to stave off an upset bid by Appalachian State. Sure, you wish he were a little more physical but Oruwariye's exceptional combination of size, agility and maturity scream first round pick and longtime NFL starter. 247 Sports Grades (Fulgham - Grade: A-. If there is one gripe about this pick, it's more about where it happened rather than who it was. The Lions might have needed a wideout more than in the sixth round, but when you score a value pick like Fulgham it hardly matters. Clearly, the Lions top wideout pick in the draft can make some plays with his size. What he lacks in speed he makes up for with some nice ability to catch the football and make some tough contested catches in the red zone. That is just what he could be expected to do for Matthew Stafford and the Lions in Detroit. The team is in need of touchdowns and plays, and Fulgham can deliver some of those. It will be huge for the Lions to develop him, and in this offense, he could become a star. All of that will be sorted out in time, but the fact is, Johnson packs a punch as a runner and has speed on special teams as well. He's one of those guys you simply have to account for and worry about on the field no matter whether it's offense or special teams. That's huge, as the Lions have a major need for special teams speed and offensive playmaking ability. He's not likely to overtake T.J. Hockenson as the biggest tight end the Lions have on the roster, but he could be good complement to Hockenson as a primary pass-catcher/route-runner. He also finally gives Bob Quinn the SEC player he covets as he's often said he likes players from the conference and has now drafted one in every draft he's run in Detroit. He has never had a game better than his 5-catch, 86-yard performance against Tennessee in 2016, though. (OUTLOOK: Arrived to Georgia as a heralded five-star recruit and while he didn’t quite live up to expectations, Nauta finished up his career strong and appears ready for the next level as an early entree. He finished his career with 42 games played, including 27 starts, registering 68 catches for 905 receiving yards and eight touchdowns. Possesses the size, frame and maturity that should make for a rather seamless transition to the NFL. A highly competitive and physical player. Also a big play threat who is difficult to tackle in the open field. Has been used out of the slot and is not afraid to go over the middle. Shows sound blocking technique and great strength. Does a nice job of riding out his blocks and staying on his man through the whistle. A vocal leader who holds teammates accountable and isn’t afraid to speak up, according to his head coach Kirby Smart. Has been a streaky performer during his Bulldogs career, with 29 catches as a freshman, then just nine as a sophomore, before bouncing back with 30 receptions as a junior. The Georgia offense did not make great use of the tight end in their passing game. Will get caught turning and running before he actually catches the ball, leading to an occasional drop. 247 Sports Grades (Nauta - Grade: A. There is no better people to trust for defensive line evaluations rather than Matt Patricia and Bob Quinn. They have inched the potential out of A'Shawn Robinson, discovered Da'Shawn Hand and managed to make something out of New York Giants' castoff Romeo Okwara. In New England, Patricia developed newest Lion Trey Flowers. So much like Austin Bryant, Johnson's selection in round seven makes total sense for the team. He's a plugger and clogger and has the look of a mini version of Damon Harrison. Call him 'Baby Snacks' for the time being. There isn't many stats and tape to rely on thanks to Johnson's ups and downs in life, but last season, he played elite football. The Lions like that tape, and it's hard to disagree with them. He can be another thick body to eat space up front and frustrate opposing running games. Draft analysis: I love Hockenson as a two-way tight end prospect. He will be a strong target for Matthew Stafford and a nice blocker in the run game. But he wasn't the top player available: it was defensive tackle Ed Oliver. Time will tell which way they should have gone with that pick. Tavai was picked earlier than expected, much like Kyle Van Noy was a few years ago, though NFL scouts believe Tavai can become a starter. The Van Noy pick didn't work out for the Lions, but hopefully this one will. Trading up for Harris helped the Lions meet a need at safety and he was an appropriate value. Even with Trey Flowers in the fold, adding another pass rusher in Bryant made a lot of sense. Getting a big corner was a must, so I'm on board with the Oruwariye pick. The Lions needed the depth they added at running back and receiver, too -- and I can't fault them for taking Nauta in the seventh to join Hockenson. After a day two which left plenty of fans wondering, Bob Quinn got a great day three off to a quick start by trading back, nabbing an extra pick and also still being able to pick up Bryant, one of the final members of the famed Clemson "Power Rangers" defensive line tandem that was still on the board. Bryant is a long prospect who has all the atributes Matt Patricia and the Lions love in an edge piece. He can move around inside and out and be a truthfully versatile weapon. This was a great pick for the Lions. He's long, but he's likely situational as a pass-rusher to start his career while he refines his ability to become a run-stopper. Think of this as a backup to Trey Flowers and Romeo Okwara, a third edge-rusher who can be developed behind two players who know and fit the system well. Bryant made a name for himself this year during the College Football Playoff by having three tackles for loss (two sacks) against Notre Dame and then three tackles in the title game against Alabama. (OUTLOOK: Perhaps the greatest statement about just how much talent has been playing along the defensive line for Clemson is the fact that the prototypically-built Bryant - and his 35 career tackles for loss, 20 sacks and penchant for making big plays in big moments - is expected to be selected fourth among the Tigers' fearsome front. And yet Bryant is viewed by some as a potential first round pick. He looks the part of an NFL edge rusher with broad shoulders, a tapered, athletic frame and long limbs. Flashes excellent initial quickness, timing his get-off with the ball to cross the face of right tackles and showing the quickness to counter back inside. Equally explosive off the ball out of the two or three-point stance, offering his future NFL team a great deal of schematic versatility. A flexible athlete with the agility, bend and closing speed to be very effective on twists and stunts. Accelerates quickly, generating impressive power as a tackler, creating some big collisions and forcing two fumbles in 2017. Uses his long arms to lasso ball-carriers in the open field, wrapping them up for the secure stop. Shows some awareness of passing lanes, getting his hands up and showing good timing on his leaps to hamper the view of quarterbacks. Lack of playing time is evident in how long it takes him to process the action, too often hesitating and reacting only after the ball is moving. Does not currently show a wide variety of pass rush moves and hand technique, relying mostly on pure speed, a counter back inside, a bull rush and the variety of twists and stunts utilized by the Clemson coaching staff. Has undergone surgery on both feet for the same injury (broken fifth metatarsal), which warranted further investigation at the NFL Combine. He was figured to go in the second round or at least much higher than the fifth. Somehow, he was there for the Lions who nabbed him to play a huge role in their new-look defensive backfield. With 6-1 size yet solid speed and a big play gene, it would be easy to see Oruwariye becoming the eventual "Robin" to Darius Slay's "Batman." The Lions love corners who can muck things up for the opposition. Better yet, Oruwariye says he studies the games of Slay and Richard Sherman the closest. More of a man corner, he could pair well with Darius Slay once he gets a hang of the defense. Have to think he'll spend most of 2019 on special teams unless injuries force him into a larger role. He could also fit in well in the Lions' defensive backs room because of his love of playing video games -- something Quandre Diggs and Slay are also into. (OUTLOOK: In 2017, Penn State was guided by an exceptional athlete in running back Saquon Barkley, a player widely regarded as the best in the country and one who ultimately earned the No. 2 overall pick of the 2018 NFL Draft by the New York Giants. Barkley accounted for over 2,000 all-purpose yards and led the league's rookies with 15 touchdowns. A year later and Penn State is offering a similarly spectacular athlete in Oruwariye, albeit one with much less fanfare and perhaps less likely to make quite as dramatic of an impact in the NFL as a rookie, given his position. Whereas Barkley was branded by some as a can't miss prospect dating back to high school, Oruwariye signed with Penn State as "just" a three star recruit and redshirted his first season on campus. Since then, however, he's developed into one of the country's most respected cornerbacks, earning Second Team All-Big Ten honors as a junior and ascending to First Team accolades in 2018, when he registered a career-high 50 tackles and 11 passes broken up, as well as three interceptions - including a highlight reel game-clincher in the end zone during overtime in the first game of the season to stave off an upset bid by Appalachian State. Sure, you wish he were a little more physical but Oruwariye's exceptional combination of size, agility and maturity scream first round pick and longtime NFL starter. 247 Sports Grades (Fulgham - Grade: A-. If there is one gripe about this pick, it's more about where it happened rather than who it was. The Lions might have needed a wideout more than in the sixth round, but when you score a value pick like Fulgham it hardly matters. Clearly, the Lions top wideout pick in the draft can make some plays with his size. What he lacks in speed he makes up for with some nice ability to catch the football and make some tough contested catches in the red zone. That is just what he could be expected to do for Matthew Stafford and the Lions in Detroit. The team is in need of touchdowns and plays, and Fulgham can deliver some of those. It will be huge for the Lions to develop him, and in this offense, he could become a star. 247 Sports Grades (Ty Johnson - Grade: A-. The only question about Johnson is his role in Detroit. Is he part of the backfield, or just a scat back? Is he a replacement for Theo Riddick, who now can be shipped off for future assets or another player? All of that will be sorted out in time, but the fact is, Johnson packs a punch as a runner and has speed on special teams as well. He's one of those guys you simply have to account for and worry about on the field no matter whether it's offense or special teams. He finished his career with 42 games played, including 27 starts, registering 68 catches for 905 receiving yards and eight touchdowns. Possesses the size, frame and maturity that should make for a rather seamless transition to the NFL. A highly competitive and physical player. Also a big play threat who is difficult to tackle in the open field. Has been used out of the slot and is not afraid to go over the middle. Shows sound blocking technique and great strength. Does a nice job of riding out his blocks and staying on his man through the whistle. A vocal leader who holds teammates accountable and isn’t afraid to speak up, according to his head coach Kirby Smart. Has been a streaky performer during his Bulldogs career, with 29 catches as a freshman, then just nine as a sophomore, before bouncing back with 30 receptions as a junior. The Georgia offense did not make great use of the tight end in their passing game. Will get caught turning and running before he actually catches the ball, leading to an occasional drop. They have inched the potential out of A'Shawn Robinson, discovered Da'Shawn Hand and managed to make something out of New York Giants' castoff Romeo Okwara. In New England, Patricia developed newest Lion Trey Flowers. So much like Austin Bryant, Johnson's selection in round seven makes total sense for the team. He's a plugger and clogger and has the look of a mini version of Damon Harrison. Call him 'Baby Snacks' for the time being. There isn't many stats and tape to rely on thanks to Johnson's ups and downs in life, but last season, he played elite football. The Lions like that tape, and it's hard to disagree with them. He can be another thick body to eat space up front and frustrate opposing running games. Draft analysis: I love Hockenson as a two-way tight end prospect. He will be a strong target for Matthew Stafford and a nice blocker in the run game. But he wasn't the top player available: it was defensive tackle Ed Oliver. Time will tell which way they should have gone with that pick. Tavai was picked earlier than expected, much like Kyle Van Noy was a few years ago, though NFL scouts believe Tavai can become a starter. The Van Noy pick didn't work out for the Lions, but hopefully this one will. Trading up for Harris helped the Lions meet a need at safety and he was an appropriate value. Even with Trey Flowers in the fold, adding another pass rusher in Bryant made a lot of sense. Getting a big corner was a must, so I'm on board with the Oruwariye pick. The Lions needed the depth they added at running back and receiver, too -- and I can't fault them for taking Nauta in the seventh to join Hockenson. But the reasoning behind that could be more to a shoulder injury which stunted his time late in 2018 and caused him to miss the Senior Bowl and NFL Combine. Big performances there could have truthfully launched Tavai's star, so he could be a hidden gem in time. As it stands, reports were the New England Patriots were interested in him as well. He'll be an easy defensive fit for the Lions given his size and ability to cover ground, and linebacker was indeed a big need for Detroit this offseason. The tape and statistics show a player in the right place at the right time that has all the tools. But will the pressure of being a second round pick be too much? Detroit Lions' 2019 draft: Analysis for every pick (Round 2, No. 43 overall: Jahlani Tavai, LB, Hawaii - My take: Honestly -- he's not a player I know all that much about and is a complete surprise at pick No. 43. If it feels like the Tracy Walker selection Quinn made in the third round a year ago all over again, that's pretty fair. Walker turned out strong for Detroit. Tough to say at all on Tavai. He had 82 tackles and two sacks as a senior. He has good size at 6-foot-2, 250 pounds and was better as a junior and sophomore when he had over 100 tackles in each season. He's from California originally and fits the athleticism mold well as he was named to the United States U-18 rugby team growing up. But considering some other, more well-established, options on the board this feels like a reach of a pick. Tavai was suspended for the first game of his senior season for breaking team rules. The suspension stemmed from an altercation at a bar in June 2018. The Lions selection of Tavai confused many in the moment, and indeed, it was out of left field considering not many gave the Hawaii linebacker a chance of being an early pick. But the reasoning behind that could be more to a shoulder injury which stunted his time late in 2018 and caused him to miss the Senior Bowl and NFL Combine. Big performances there could have truthfully launched Tavai's star, so he could be a hidden gem in time. As it stands, reports were the New England Patriots were interested in him as well. He'll be an easy defensive fit for the Lions given his size and ability to cover ground, and linebacker was indeed a big need for Detroit this offseason. If it feels like the Tracy Walker selection Quinn made in the third round a year ago all over again, that's pretty fair. Walker turned out strong for Detroit. Tough to say at all on Tavai. He had 82 tackles and two sacks as a senior. He has good size at 6-foot-2, 250 pounds and was better as a junior and sophomore when he had over 100 tackles in each season. He's from California originally and fits the athleticism mold well as he was named to the United States U-18 rugby team growing up. But considering some other, more well-established, options on the board this feels like a reach of a pick. Tavai was suspended for the first game of his senior season for breaking team rules. Harris will play more right off the bat in Detroit, he knows the Paul Pasqualoni defense and is like a coach on the field with plenty of leadership qualities. Draft winners, losers: Give it up for Cards (Losers - Detroit Lions: Loved this call from Bryant McFadden on our HQ show -- Detroit drafted a tight end in the first round for the third time in the last decade, with T.J. Hockenson joining Brandon Pettigrew and Eric Ebron on a list that would not be described as illustrious. Jahlani Tavai out of Hawaii helps as a linebacker (I thought they could have gone Devin Bush in the first round) and I don't necessarily dislike their picks. But I'm confused as to what their identity is moving forward. Are the Lions going to pound the rock while paying Matthew Stafford massive amounts of money? Are they going to line up three tight ends and try to feed Kerryon Johnson? Even if it all works out they have to do it in a division where the Packers got demonstrably better (Rashan Gary, Darnell Savage in the first round alone) and the Vikings added a center (Garrett Bradbury) who could ignite their running game and Dalvin Cook's one-cut, zone-running potential. Draft winners, losers: Give it up for Cards (Losers - Detroit Lions: Loved this call from Bryant McFadden on our HQ show -- Detroit drafted a tight end in the first round for the third time in the last decade, with T.J. Hockenson joining Brandon Pettigrew and Eric Ebron on a list that would not be described as illustrious. Jahlani Tavai out of Hawaii helps as a linebacker (I thought they could have gone Devin Bush in the first round) and I don't necessarily dislike their picks. But I'm confused as to what their identity is moving forward. Are the Lions going to pound the rock while paying Matthew Stafford massive amounts of money? Are they going to line up three tight ends and try to feed Kerryon Johnson? Even if it all works out they have to do it in a division where the Packers got demonstrably better (Rashan Gary, Darnell Savage in the first round alone) and the Vikings added a center (Garrett Bradbury) who could ignite their running game and Dalvin Cook's one-cut, zone-running potential.
