247 Sports Grades (Jahlani - Grade: B. The Lions selection of Tavai confused many in the moment, and indeed, it was out of left field considering not many gave the Hawaii linebacker a chance of being an early pick. But the reasoning behind that could be more to a shoulder injury which stunted his time late in 2018 and caused him to miss the Senior Bowl and NFL Combine. Big performances there could have truthfully launched Tavai's star, so he could be a hidden gem in time. As it stands, reports were the New England Patriots were interested in him as well. He'll be an easy defensive fit for the Lions given his size and ability to cover ground, and linebacker was indeed a big need for Detroit this offseason. The tape and statistics show a player in the right place at the right time that has all the tools. But will the pressure of being a second round pick be too much? However, he has three-down ability. He's forceful against the run and athletic enough to drop into coverage. Detroit Lions' 2019 draft: Analysis for every pick (Round 2, No. 43 overall: Jahlani Tavai, LB, Hawaii - My take: Honestly -- he's not a player I know all that much about and is a complete surprise at pick No. 43. If it feels like the Tracy Walker selection Quinn made in the third round a year ago all over again, that's pretty fair. Walker turned out strong for Detroit. Tough to say at all on Tavai. He had 82 tackles and two sacks as a senior. He has good size at 6-foot-2, 250 pounds and was better as a junior and sophomore when he had over 100 tackles in each season. He's from California originally and fits the athleticism mold well as he was named to the United States U-18 rugby team growing up. But considering some other, more well-established, options on the board this feels like a reach of a pick. Tavai was suspended for the first game of his senior season for breaking team rules. The suspension stemmed from an altercation at a bar in June 2018. He sets the edge when he lines up the outside and he anchors well between the tackles. He chases with good effort and takes sound pursuit angles. He flashes as a pass-rusher and he shows good awareness in underneath zone. Post-Draft Analysis - Jarrad Davis (2017 first-round pick) is an erratic tackler and has struggled in coverage at times. 247 Sports Grades (Harris - Grade: B+. The fact is, some folks will want to think that Harris was a reach, and if you are judging things purely by prospect rankings, it might seem that way. But looking deeper, Harris will enter Detroit much in the same vein that 2018 pick Tracy Walker did, yet with a shot for a bigger immediate role thanks to Glover Quin's departure. Harris will play more right off the bat in Detroit, he knows the Paul Pasqualoni defense and is like a coach on the field with plenty of leadership qualities. That's why Detroit elected to go with Harris over a flashier name like a Chauncey Gardner Johnson. His lack of ball production is a bit concerning, but the Lions aren't asking him to pick up 10 interceptions a year. ESPN Detroit Lions' 2019 draft: Analysis for every pick (Round 3, No. 81 overall: Will Harris , DB, Boston College - My take: This is a strong pick by Detroit -- the second consecutive year the Lions went with a safety in the third round of the draft. Last year was Tracy Walker. In Harris, they have a big hitter with coverage skills. He's also big at 6-foot-2, which could make him an optimal fit when the Lions go to three safeties. With five career interceptions and 12 passes defended, he can play deep but he won't shy away from hitting with 225 career tackles. (OUTLOOK: With defensive-minded head coach Steve Addazio running the show, it should come as no surprise that Boston College has turned into a consistent producer of quality NFL defensive prospects. Harris is a bit of a throwback to a prior generation as a run-defending box safety. Draft picks: Hawaii LB Jahlani Tavai (No. 43); Day 2 grade: B-. Draft analysis: I love Hockenson as a two-way tight end prospect. He will be a strong target for Matthew Stafford and a nice blocker in the run game. But he wasn't the top player available: it was defensive tackle Ed Oliver. Time will tell which way they should have gone with that pick. Tavai was picked earlier than expected, much like Kyle Van Noy was a few years ago, though NFL scouts believe Tavai can become a starter. The Van Noy pick didn't work out for the Lions, but hopefully this one will.
