DraftTek Mock Draft (8. DE Montez Sweat: With just how deep this draft class is in 2019, it's true that many teams in the top 10 could go in many different directions. For weeks, the Lions were slotted with LSU stud linebacker Devin White, but this week, we go a little different with Montez Sweat. With Devin White off the board to the Buccaneers, this seems like a no-brainer. You may have heard that Sweat ran a fast 40-yard dash time. Putting things into some perspective, at 6'6" tall, this d-lineman was just a tick slower than first-round WR prospect, D.K. Metcalf (4.33). That's fast. Let's spice this analysis up a bit and play a game by comparing the measurables from two prospects' respective combines. I won't name who's who (unless you read the ending, *cheaters*). Prospect 1: 4.41 forty-yard dash time, 21 bench reps, 36 inch vertical jump, 125 inch broad jump, 7 second 3-cone drill, and a 4.29 in the 20-yard shuttle. Prospect 2: 4.63 forty-yard dash time, 21 bench reps, 34.5 inch vertical jump, 118 inch broad jump, 7.11 3-cone drill, and a 4.26 in the 20-yard shuttle. Sounds fairly similar, right? Prospect 1 is Montez Sweat and Prospect 2 is Ezekiel Ansah. Crazy, right? Let's go deeper. As freakishly athletic as Ansah was, he had only started playing football his sophomore year at BYU, and by the time he became a senior, he registered 4.5 sacks and 13 tackles for losses, earning him the #5 overall draft pick in 2013 by your Detroit Lions. Sweat's stats are even better, as he posted 23.5 sacks and 30.5 tackles for loss in his collegiate career. So, with the #8 overall selection in the 2019 NFL Draft, the Detroit Lions select...."an even better Ziggy Ansah"? I could only imagine the havoc that D-Line would create with Flowers, Okwara, and Harrison. Yowza. 43. LB D'Andre Baker: I'd like to think that we have been on the Lions' wavelength for some time now, and it's interesting to see that more and more columnists, draft experts, and analysts are adopting this line of thinking. An article posted this week from the Detroit Free Press took the time to analyze the Lions' cornerback situation. The summary? The Lions truly do need to find their true, not just short-term pairing to Darius Slay, but long-term replacement of Darius Slay. That means DeAndre Baker is the selection to fill that need. Slay isn't "old" per se at age 28, but he's no spring chicken. Given the Lions have had quite the issue trying to find that CB to pair with Slay for the last few years now, Baker seems to be an obvious choice here in the Second Round. Baker only allowed 1 touchdown in his entire 4-year collegiate career. I'll repeat, 1 touchdown. His confidence is off the charts, resembling that of a number one wide receiver (a good thing to possess as a DB) and simply put, he makes plays. There have been rumors that Detroit could possibly trade down from their #8 spot and select Washington CB Byron Murphy, or even trade up in RD2 to take Baker. Walter Football 2019 NFL Mock Draft (8. Detroit Lions - DE Brian Burns: The Lions are desperate to trade down. They have countless needs and not enough picks to fill those holes, so I could see them sliding down 4-8 spots and selecting Brian Burns, who would provide a great pass-rushing presence across from the newly acquired Trey Flowers. Burns is not seen as a top-15 prospect by several teams, but there's no doubting his immense upside. I'd say he also has a high floor as well; Burns has high-character marks and works extremely hard. He was a team captain at Florida State, which should be appealing to the Lions. 43. G Dalton Risner: The Lions parted ways with T.J. Lang, who then announced his retirement. They'll need an upgrade at guard to protect Matthew Stafford. Dalton Risner had problems with speed rushers on the edge, but improved his play in 2018. Some have seventh-round grades on him, while others believe he'll be selected on Day 2. 88. WR JJ Arcega-Whiteside: Detroit's offense suffered a sharp decline after Golden Tate was traded. Here's a long-term replacement in the receiving corps. J.J. Arcega-Whiteside has speed concerns, but he's a mismatch receiver with great size (6-3, 225). 104. LB Cameron Smith: The Lions will have to spend a Round 2-4 pick on a linebacker if they don't take Devin White No. 8 overall. Cameron Smith was productive at USC, but there are concerns that he'll have trouble in coverage in the NFL. 131. TE Foster Moreau: The Lions didn't get the most out of Eric Ebron, but perhaps their next tight end will live up to expectations. 184. The situation hasn’t gotten much better since, with new addition Jesse James profiling as more of a backup or fringe-starter. The Lions will listen to offers to trade down, but if they stay put Hockenson is a logical target. Hockenson was overshadowed on his own team by Noah Fant, who is flashier and a more dynamic vertical threat. It will likely be Hockenson who hears his name called first on Draft Day though. Walter football 2019 NFL Mock Draft - Charlie Campbell (8. DE Montez Sweat: The Lions grab a book end edge rusher to go across from Trey Flowers. Sweat has the versatility Detroit looks for with being able to stand up or put his hand in the ground. Adding an edge rusher would allow the Lions to kick Da'Shawn Hand inside to rush in the sub package. Sweat has a fast first-step with functional strength and some natural feel as a pass-rusher. He has just two years of playing time, so he has upside to develop. That could be seen at the Senior Bowl, where he dominated against good competition. Sweat is a long, fast edge rusher who would be a great fit as an outside linebacker in a 3-4 defense or could play end in a 4-3. To cap off his great offseason, Sweat had a record-setting 40 time at the NFL Scouting Combine, and that workout could vault him into the top 10. In 2018, Sweat totaled 53 tackles, 14 for a loss, 11.5 sacks and one forced fumble. The 6-foot-6, 252-pounder turned in an excellent 2017 season and was dynamic defender for the Bulldogs. He totaled 48 tackles with 15.5 tackles for a loss and 10.5 sacks for the year. 43. TE Noah Fant: The Lions could use a receiving tight end. Iowa has produced a lot of good tight end prospects in recent years, and Fant could keep that trend going, along with T.J. Hockenson. Fant totaled 39 receptions for 519 yards and seven touchdowns in 2018. He hauled in 28 passes for 486 yards with 10 touchdowns as a sophomore in 2017. The 6-foot-4, 249-pounder has off-the-field concerns with teams, and that could help push him to Day 2. Fant needs to get better as a blocker for the NFL. He could have three-down starting potential with his ability to contribute as a receiver. 88. ILB Germaine Pratt: The Lions could use more linebacker talent to go next to Jarrad Davis. Pratt (6-2, 240) came to N.C. State as a safety before growing into a linebacker. He is a tough defender at the point of attack with the speed to fly around the field and a physical, attacking style of play. In 2018, Pratt totaled 104 tackles with 10.5 for a loss, six sacks, two forced fumbles and three passes broken up. Pratt was only a 1-year starter in college and needs to develop his ability to take on and shed blocks. However, Pratt has a good skill set and could become a good starter after some grooming. 111.
