This is a tough pick because the Lions have put themselves in a position to just follow their board. I have to think Patricia would love to have a guy with his athleticism, and the opportunity to maximize his potential. He provides another talented, long, athletic body up front, and Patricia can’t get enough of those. I just want a defensive line that keeps people up at night. This pick moves them one step closer. Walter Football 2019 NFL Mock Draft (8. Detroit Lions - LB Josh Allen: If you were to tell me a couple of weeks ago that Josh Allen could be available at No. 8 overall, I would've laughed at you and called the local insane asylum to have you committed. However, I'm now befuddled as to where Allen could be drafted. Let's run through the scenarios: Jets - Peter King reported that the Jets don't like Allen very much, and they could trade down anyway. Raiders - I think it's more likely that they pick Quinnen Williams or Ed Oliver. Buccaneers - Very possible, but I'm leaning toward Devin White. Giants - This is the most likely spot at the moment, but I'm getting the feeling that they'll be antsy about losing out on Daniel Jones. Jaguars - Would they pass on the opportunity to protect their new, expensive quarterback? Maybe, but I'm sticking with Jonah Williams for now. If this still seems crazy to you, remember that last year, barely anyone thought Bradley Chubb would drop to the Broncos and that Derwin James would fall to the Chargers. Stuff like this happens all the time, and I doubt the Lions will be complaining very much. Allen can basically play anywhere you want him to on defense. He's a terrific player, as he was the primary reason why Kentucky was in contention for the SEC East title so late into the season. He's compared to as a hybrid of Leonard Floyd and Zach Cunningham, as he can play in coverage and also rush the quarterback effectively on the edge. He was also a team captain, which must please Bob Quinn. OTHER 2019 NFL DRAFT POSSIBILITIES: 1. Devin Bush, LB - Bush checks all the boxes for what the Lions look for in a prospect. Plus, he fills a need, and as general manager Bob Quinn said, the Lions want to draft lighter, quicker players, and that certainly applies to Bush. 2. Trade Down - The Lions sound desperate to trade down, which makes sense, given the high number of needs they have. Perhaps they'll select Brian Burns if they move down. 43. S Darnell Savage: The Lions have struggled against the pass for far too long. They need help at both positions in their secondary. Darnell Savage is small (5-11, 200), but has good speed and instincts. 88. WR JJ Arcega-Whiteside: Detroit's offense suffered a sharp decline after Golden Tate was traded. Here's a long-term replacement in the receiving corps. J.J. Arcega-Whiteside has speed concerns, but he's a mismatch receiver with great size (6-3, 225). 104. LB Cameron Smith: The Lions will have to spend a Round 2-4 pick on a linebacker if they don't take Devin White No. 8 overall. Cameron Smith was productive at USC, but there are concerns that he'll have trouble in coverage in the NFL. 131. TE Foster Moreau: The Lions didn't get the most out of Eric Ebron, but perhaps their next tight end will live up to expectations. 184. CB Montre Hartage: The Lions need as much help in the secondary as possible. There are concerns about Montre Hartage's speed and athleticism, so he may have to move to safety. 204. DT Terry Beckner: The high-character Terry Beckner could be someone the Lions target late in the draft to help the defensive line's depth. 224. Walter football 2019 NFL Mock Draft - Charlie Campbell (8. LB Devin Bush: I'm very torn on Detroit's first-round pick between Jonah Williams, T.J. Hockenson and Brian Burns. The Lions could use another edge rusher, but they just spent big on Trey Flowers and Burns is limited to being a situational pass-rusher because he is weak in run defense and lacks strength. That is not a great fit for Matt Patricia's defense, which demands versatility and toughness. Hockenson would be a nice addition, and the Lions need more players who create mismatches in the passing game, but they signed Jesse James to a significant contract and this draft has some depth at tight end that they could draw on Friday night. Jonah Williams would be a day-one starter for Detroit at right guard, and as a three-down starter, he could provide a bigger impact than Burns and provide more impact on a down-by-down basis than a tight end. However, he's off the board and so is star linebacker Devin White. Detroit could take Devin Bush as he would be a great complement to Jarrad Davis and the Lions linebackers were a big weakness last year. Bush and Davis would form a fast and physical tandem. The 5-foot-11, 234-pound Bush is a short linebacker by NFL standards, but he is an ultra-fast sideline-to-sideline defender with the potential to be a special player in coverage. In 2018, Bush recorded 78 tackles with nine tackles for a loss, five sacks and six passes batted. As a sophomore, he totaled 101 tackles with 9.5 tackles for a loss, five sacks, eight passes batted and one interception. He would fit well as a Will - weak side - linebacker, which would let him use his speed and athleticism to seek and destroy in the ground game and cover in the passing game. 43. TE Irv Smith: The Lions could use a receiving tight end. The 6-foot-2, 242-pound Smith is a dangerous receiving threat with mismatch athleticism, quickness, and route-running ability. He was excellent for Alabama in 2018, catching 38 passes for 648 yards and seven touchdowns. Smith has upside to improve as he gains playing experience. His father was a first-round pick out of Notre Dame by the Saints in the 1993 NFL Draft. Irv Smith Jr.'s uncle, Edward Smith, also played tight end in the NFL with the Atlanta Falcons. 88. ILB Germaine Pratt: The Lions could use more linebacker talent to go next to Jarrad Davis. Pratt (6-2, 240) came to N.C. State as a safety before growing into a linebacker. He is a tough defender at the point of attack with the speed to fly around the field and a physical, attacking style of play. In 2018, Pratt totaled 104 tackles with 10.5 for a loss, six sacks, two forced fumbles and three passes broken up. Pratt was only a 1-year starter in college and needs to develop his ability to take on and shed blocks. However, Pratt has a good skill set and could become a good starter after some grooming. 111. DE LJ Collier: The Lions take some defensive line edge-rushing talent. 146. CB Derrick Baity: Cornerback depth is an area the Lions should address. 184. The Lions desperately want to move down, but whether anyone is willing to pay the price to come up remains to be seen. Wherever they end up selecting word is Detroit wants to shore up the blocking unit in front of Matthew Stafford, which is tough to argue with. What better way to do that than by adding the top offensive lineman in this class? This is another team that would be a fit for Iowa TE T.J. Hockenson if he were available. Even though they broke the bank to sign Trey Flowers in free agency one of the stud defensive linemen could prove tempting as well. Williams started every game of his college career for the Crimson Tide, consistently getting the job done at a high level in both the pass and run games. Click on Detroit Louie Kamberovski Mock Draft (8. T.J. Hockenson, TE, Iowa: I know, ANOTHER TIGHT END. But hear me out on this one because T.J. Hockenson is a special talent. The first thing you need to know is he is basically a carbon copy of Travis Kelce and Zach Ertz, two of the best in the league. Standing 6’5”, Hockenson will be a red-zone target in the NFL, a trait that is coveted by NFL franchises. Hockenson may be the purest route runner in the draft, including wide receivers. He can create separation from defenders while running out of a 3-point stance, or when he is split out wide. Along with the smooth routes, Hockenson does something that only a select few can do -- he pulls away from defenders as the ball is in the air, allowing for big plays up the field. When it comes to blocking, Hockenson can hold his own. His teammate and fellow first round prospect Noah Fant rarely stayed in to block, so a lot of the blocking fell on Hockenson’s shoulders, and he was able to move lineman to open up running lanes for his backs. At the end of the day, T.J. Hockenson is the best offensive player in this years draft. Lions fans may have a tough time drafting another TE in the first round, but with all the depth on the defensive line, its not really worth taking one here. After that, where else would you have the Lions go? Helping out the secondary would be nice, but Greedy Williams would be a reach here. It never hurts to help out the offensive line, but do you really want to draft a guard at No. 8? Devin White and Devin Bush are nice players, but do they fit Patricia’s defense? You already have the running back of the future, and there isn’t a wide receiver that even warrants a conversation here.
