The NFL's top 12 tight ends (11. T.J. Hockenson, Detroit Lions: After a slow start, T.J. Hockenson has shown over the past two seasons the promise that made him a top-ten selection in the 2019 NFL draft by the Detroit Lions. After catching 67 passes for 723 yards and six touchdowns in 2020 — earning his first Pro Bowl selection — Hockenson followed that up with 61 catches for 583 yards and four scores a season ago. Like the player we will discuss next, Hockenson is comfortable working in tight quarters. He also shows no fear whether working over the middle, or up the seam. On this catch against the Philadelphia Eagles, Hockenson works vertically and adjusts to a high throw, knowing the safety is lurking. Another area where he stands out is as a blocker. Coming out of Iowa, he was viewed as a more traditional tight end, with the ability to play in-line and handle the blocking part of the position. He has lived up to that billing with plays like this slice block against the Cleveland Browns on an inside zone design. With some new faces in Detroit this season, the Lions might be a better team than people expect.
