2024 Mock Draft Round Up #6

Tankathon (27. DE Bralen Trice.  59. CB T.J. Tampa.  85. CB DJ James.  91. DT Nazir Stackhouse) (12-16-23):  https://www.tankathon.com/nfl/mock_draft

Walter football Charlie (27. Amarius Mims, OT, Georgia:  As evidenced by Taylor Decker’s recent performances versus Rashan Gary and Montez Sweat, there is no doubt that Decker is in decline. The Lions also have their starting guards hitting free agency. They could take a tackle in the 2024 NFL Draft and start out that pick at guard next season. Then in 2025, Detroit could move that 2024 selection over to right tackle whil Penei Sewell moves to left tackle.  Manning right tackle for Georgia, Mims is a giant monster who has very little body fat and is a unique physical specimen with size, speed and athleticism. Team sources say Mims has 11.2-inch hands and 36-inch arms, as well as quickness. They noted his physical body is similar to that of Tyron Smith.  Previously, the 6-foot-7, 330-pound Mims was a backup and rotational player for Georgia. He dominated Ohio State to close out the 2022 season and looked like he was toying with the highly touted Buckeyes defensive ends. NFL team evaluators say Mims has been more physical and nasty in 2023, and he was playing dominant football before being sidelined for a while by a lower leg injury. Team sources said that while Mims could be in the running for the best skill set of any player in the 2024 NFL Draft, he could slide to late in the first round because of his lack of playing experience, which was hindered by missing games to injury in 2023. 59. Justin Walley, CB, Minnesota:  Both of Detroit’s starting guards are entering free agency. It could be tough to spend on retaining Jonah Jackson when Detroit has to account for huge contract extensions for Amon-Ra St. Brown, Jared Goff, Penei Sewell, and Alim McNeil.  Team sources say Walley has impressed them this season, and he has been a steady defender for Minnesota. In 2023, he has 36 tackles, eight passes broken up, a forced fumble and an interception. The 5-foot-11, 185-pounder might be a better fit as a slot corner as a pro, but he is a smooth nickel corner who can run the route and prevent separation. Walley could end up being a second-day prospect in the 2024 NFL Draft.) (12-15-23):  https://walterfootball.com/draft2024charlie.php

CBS Edwards (27. OT Troy Fautanu:  Jonah Jackson and Halapoulivaati Vaitai are scheduled to be free agents after the season. Troy Fautanu has played left tackle but could be a guard at the next level. His competitive spirit will fit in well with that team.) (12-14-23):  https://www.cbssports.com/nfl/draft/news/2024-nfl-mock-draft-jayden-daniels-reinvigorates-raiders-bill-belichick-adds-a-new-quarterback/

PFN Broback (27. Detroit Lions: Cooper DeJean, CB, Iowa:  Detroit’s already had success taking an Iowa defender in Jack Campbell, so they dip into the well for another. Cooper DeJean is recovering from an injury, but he’s an electric player when health.  He’s an underrated corner who’s also a good returner, so the Lions are getting good value in this 2024 NFL Mock Draft. DeJean’s a fierce competitor and has been one of the best players on Iowa’s defense for the last couple of years. Detroit has a young and promising defense, and DeJean adds to that excitement.) (12-14-23):  https://www.profootballnetwork.com/2024-nfl-mock-draft-thursday-week-15-2023/

SI Easterling (27. Detroit Lions
DE JT Tuimoloau:  Aidan Hutchinson has already established himself as one of the most dominant edge defenders in the NFL, but the Lions could use another well-rounded player to lock down the other side. Tuimoloau has the versatility to defend the run and rush the passer, can line up all over the defensive front, and even make big plays in the passing game when asked to drop into coverage.  59.  Detroit Lions CB Josh Newton87. OG Christian Haynes.  DT Tyler Davis) (12-14-23): https://www.si.com/nfl/draft/news/2024-nfl-mock-draft-jayden-daniels-las-vegas-raiders-caleb-williams-chicago-bears-drake-maye-new-england-patriots-3-rounds

CBS Trapasso (27. Tyler Nubin S:  Although they have Kerby Joseph, it wouldn't hurt the Lions to add youth to the safety spot. Nubin's a three-down playmaker.) (12-13-23):  https://www.cbssports.com/nfl/draft/news/2024-nfl-mock-draft-patriots-pass-on-caleb-williams-at-no-2-bears-trade-justin-fields-within-nfc/

Draft Tek (27.  DE Chop Robinson:  While the Detroit Lions' playoff express has shown a few wobbles in recent weeks, the team is still 9-4 and sitting pretty in the weak NFC North. Rosterwise, injuries are exposing a few deficiencies in the team's defense. Unlike last year, when the Lions D went from bottom 3 to top 10 to key an 8-3 closing run, this year's unit has gone from respectable to porous as the season has gone along. One key area of need is the D Line, where Aidan Hutchinson is showing some fatigue from the constant double-teams he faces.  Penn State Edge Chop Robinson would find a home among the football freaks being assembled in Detroit. His twitchy technique and non-stop motor would complement Hutchinson to spark the team's pass rush.  59.  WR Brian Thomas Jr.  86.  DT Shemar Turner.  91.  TE Cade Stover.  163. RB Raheim Sanders.  205. OC Clark Barrington.  248.  CB Storm Duck) (12-13-23):  https://www.drafttek.com/2024-NFL-Draft-Team-Pages/Lions-Draft-Page.asp

Walter football Walt (27. CB Marcellas Dial:  The Lions wanted Devon Witherspoon at No. 6, so perhaps they’ll obtain a cornerback with this pick. Marcellas Dial has a good blend of size, athleticism, and speed.  59. Detroit Lions: Layden Robinson, G, Texas A&M:  The Lions have a great offensive line, save for right guard. That could be addressed with this pick.  Layden Robinson isn’t very athletic, but he’s a violent blocker who has impressed this season.) (12-6-23):  https://walterfootball.com/draft2024.php

PFN Miller (28. Laiatu Latu, EDGE, UCLA:  The Lions absolutely need someone on the opposite side of Aidan Hutchinson to take some pressure off the pass rusher. Having Laitu Latu fall into their laps because of his injury history is a dream, even if those injuries are concerning to see on paper.  Latu might be the best pass rusher in the class. He possesses the bend, plan, and hands to win consistently at the next level, even without being an overwhelmingly explosive athlete.  59. Kamari Lassiter, CB, Georgia:  If anything has been apparent over the past month, it’s that the Lions absolutely need help defensively. Pairing a complementary defensive end with a high-IQ zone defender in Kamari Lassiter is exactly what Detroit needs to keep the top on their defensive lid.) (12-9-23):  https://www.profootballnetwork.com/2-round-nfl-mock-draft-week-12-2023/

Draft wire Popejoy (28. Detroit Lions - DT Leonard Taylor III, Miami:  The Lions love tough guys and bullies along the line of scrimmage and Taylor definitely qualifies.  60.  Detroit Lions – G Christian Haynes, UConn) (12-7-23):  https://draftwire.usatoday.com/lists/2024-nfl-mock-draft-updatemarvin-harrison-drake-maye/

CBS Wilson (28. Bralen Trice EDGE - PROSPECT RNK
26th. POSITION RNK 5th.  Trice only had five sacks this season but he led FBS pass rushers in pressuring the quarterback. He's active off the edge and would be a nice bookend to Aidan Hutchinson in Detroit.) (12-5-23):  https://www.cbssports.com/nfl/draft/news/2024-nfl-mock-draft-patriots-trade-up-to-no-1-for-quarterback-bears-land-marvin-harrison-jr/

USA Today Middlehurst-Schwartz (28. Detroit Lions – Bralen Trice, DE, Washington:  No need to sell Dan Campbell on this pick. The 6-4, 274-pound Trice is a wrecking ball off the edge, consistently blasting blockers back with sheer force. With the Lions' defense unraveling in several key spots this season, he could help serve an important role as someone capable of punishing opponents who overcommit against Aidan Hutchinson.) (12-5-23):  https://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/nfl/2023/12/05/nfl-mock-draft-drake-maye-patriots-jayden-daniels-2024/71807968007/

PFN Schulte (22. Detroit Lions (via SEA): Jayden Daniels, QB, LSU.  28. Detroit Lions: Bralen Trice, EDGE, Washington.  The Detroit Lions have needed a pass rusher to emerge opposite of Aidan Hutchinson, and it hasn’t happened. Bralen Trice has emerged as a force for the Washington Huskies. His 62 pressures sit second in the country on the season, and he’s a physical, disruptive pass rusher that the Huskies like to move around.) (12-5-23):  https://www.profootballnetwork.com/2024-nfl-mock-draft-williams-maye-go-1-2/

PFF Sikkema (28. Detroit Lions: CB Cooper Dejean, Iowa - Player ADP (via MDS): 22.0.  Player Big board rank: 20.  This draft season, there will be a good debate about whether DeJean projects best at outside corner or free safety. He has the size at 6-foot-1 and 207 pounds to play both, but his best attribute is how he sees the field and his playmaking ability when the ball is in the air. He has seven interceptions and 11 forced incompletions over the past two years.) (12-4-23):  https://www.pff.com/news/draft-2024-nfl-mock-draft-four-quarterbacks-first-round-caleb-williams-bears-drake-maye-patriots

SN (27. Detroit Lions (8-3) Tyler Nubin, S, Minnesota (6-2, 210 pounds):  The Lions love Brian Branch in the nickel but some injuries and passing production agains them inside from tight ends suggests they need safety help with only short-term solutions there for a young defense. Nubin would be a fine back-seven active playmaking complement to linebacker Jack Campbell.) (12-1-23):  https://www.sportingnews.com/us/nfl/news/nfl-mock-draft-2024-bo-nix-jj-mccarthy-michael-penix/0d6fc049f7ece55bbb1f426b

Draft wire Risdon (27. Detroit Lions: Jared Verse, EDGE, Florida State:  Another player who ranked much higher in preseason, Verse had a hit-and-miss campaign for the Seminoles. The bend and closing burst remain fantastic, and that’s exactly what Detroit needs opposite Aidan Hutchinson. The Lions would have to live with his astronomical missed tackle rate (over 25 percent in two years) and spotty run defense.) (12-1-23):  https://draftwire.usatoday.com/lists/2024-nfl-mock-draft-end-of-college-regular-season-projections/

Athletic Brugler (27. DE J.T. Tuimoloau) (11-29-23):  https://www.si.com/nfl/lions/news/lions-draft-edge-bruglers-mock-draft-buckeyes

Yahoo Tice (30. Detroit Lions — Quinyon Mitchell, CB, Toledo:  Even after investing into the defensive backs room last offseason in free agency and the draft (Brian Branch is a keeper), I have the Lions taking Mitchell. He’s a MACtion alum who hits all of the height, weight and speed thresholds that teams love from their cornerback prospects and should keep rising up draft boards as the process heats up.  Not only does he have the physical traits that are prioritized, he is also highly aware and plays with fantastic eyes on the quarterback and route concepts. Mitchell constantly makes plays on the ball and makes turnovers happen. His aggressive style would fit right in with this Lions team under head coach Dan Campbell, and Mitchell is going to get only more fans as this process wears on.) Fox sports McIntyre (30. Detroit Lions: Kool-Aid McKinstry, CB, Alabama:  I'm not as high on him as others, and several Tide defensive backs haven't lived up to their draft billing for a variety of reasons. But the Lions must improve their dreadful secondary.):  https://www.foxsports.com/stories/nfl/2024-nfl-mock-draft-caleb-williams-first-of-5-qbs-in-top-9-picks

Touchdown wire (29. Detroit Lions: Josh Newton, CB, TCU.  61. Detroit Lions: Ladd McConkey, WR, Georgia) (11-11-23):  https://touchdownwire.usatoday.com/lists/2024-nfl-mock-draft-marvin-harrison-jr-caleb-williams-drake-maye/

FTW D'Andrea (29.  Detroit Lions: CB Kamari Lassiter, Georgia - Needs: CB, WR, EDGE, LB.  The Lions’ secondary has improved significantly this season, dropping its passer rating allowed nearly 10 full points to 84.5 through nine weeks. But there’s no such thing as too much cornerback depth, and Dan Campbell loves guys who are happy to play angry.  That’s Lassiter, who can bully wideouts at the line of scrimmage and blasts through tackles with more strength than his 180 pound frame suggests. He’s got six passes defensed through nine games in 2023.) (11-8-23):  https://ftw.usatoday.com/lists/nfl-mock-draft-2024-drake-maye-caleb-williams-marvin-harrison-jr
