My favorite 2024 NFL draft prospect at each position (Offensive line: Christian Mahogany, Boston College - Mahogany plays guard like a great heavy metal drummer. He’s powerful, relentless, a little angry but surprisingly deft with his technique and a little creative at times, too. My comp for him is Periphery drummer Matt Halpern, a reference that most folks won’t understand, so I’ll explain…  Periphery is a guitar-based band led by virtuoso shredders. Yet it’s Halpern’s powerful, steady and technically perfect drumming that makes it all work. That’s what a guard does for an offense–he allows the skill players to thrive by doing his job at a high level on every play. The intricate play all around him doesn’t happen without him being on beat, even if his beats are not always what you expect–and that’s a compliment to both Mahogany and Halpern. This ain’t no yacht rock or jazz that requires intricacy or nuance to appreciate; it’s in-your-face hammering.) Lions 2024 draft: An offensive guard/center for every round (Fourth round: Christian Mahogany, Boston College - Mahogany started for three years for the Eagles, one at left guard and two on the right side. He missed the 2022 season with a knee injury but came back to have the lowest blown pass block rate of any prospect in the draft in his final season.  What I like:  Exudes brute power throughout his big frame.  Nasty initial punch that can jolt and stand up powerful rushers.  Excellent anchor strength in pass protection.  Finishes his blocks and looks for work to unleash more violence.  Impressive short-area footwork to slide one step and quickly reset.  Acts as a snowplow when pulling in the run game.  Negatives:  Poor balance and pass protection range beyond one step in any direction.  Can get overaggressive and overshoot his assignment.  Lacks quickness in his feet and knees to effectively pick up stunts and second-level rushers that don’t try to bull him.  Gets upright in space at times.  Undersized DTs can leverage off and around him if he doesn’t win with his initial punch.  Powerful but slow afoot and straight-linish as a run blocker in space.  Mahogany could go in the third round and few would be surprised; with no fourth-round pick currently (remember–trades happen!) the Lions would need to use their third-rounder if they wanted one of the most physical guard in the last few drafts.) NFL Combine results: 12 standouts from the interior offensive line group (Christian Mahogany, Boston College (6-foot-3 1⁄2, 314 pounds) - NFL projected position: Will compete for a starting guard role.  Notable measurable: 1.74-second 10-yard split, 9.58 unofficial RAS.  Mahogany measured well, and was above average in every testing metric except the three-cone drill, illustrating a well-rounded, athletic skill set. He moved very well laterally, with a strong kick slide, staying under control and balanced. Mahogany was a quick mover in most drills and showed a great initial burst out of his stance.) Boston College Stars Christian Mahogany, Elijah Jones Shine at 2024 NFL Scouting Combine (Christian Mahogany:  Christian Mahogany entered the NFL Scouting Combine as one of the more highly-regarded interior offensive linemen in the class. After sitting out of the Fenway Bowl to prevent injury, Mahogany participated in the East-West Shrine game and was lauded as one of the best players there. Going into the Combine, he did not have much to prove, as he is known as a good athlete; plus, athleticism is not exactly the most important trait for a guard.  First up were the measurements. Mahogany somehow came in over an inch taller than when he was measured at the East-West Shrine game. His weight is solid, maybe a little lower than the weight he'll play at so that his drill times are faster. His other measurements were all very solid; if he were an offensive tackle, they would still be acceptable.  Like Jones and his former teammate Zion Johnson, Mahogany came in and shattered expectations with his workout. His vertical (32.5) and broad jump (9'1"/109") were in the 94th and 85th percentiles, respectively, for offensive guards who participated in the Combine. The vertical was tied for the 10th-best among offensive linemen this year, while his broad was tied for 25th. In the 40-yard dash, Mahogany continued to impress. He posted a 5.13 with a 1.74 10-yard split, the same as Zion Johnson while beating his 40 time by five hundredths of a second. A 5.13 is good enough to be in the 75th percentile for offensive guards at the Combine, while the 1.74 10-yard split is in the 90th percentile. In the positional on-field work, Mahogany continued to shine, displaying great quickness, excellent agility, and controlled footwork. Interestingly, NFL Network's Shaun O'Hara and Daniel Jeremiah noted that Mahogany's stance is somewhat unorthodox and resembles that of the aforementioned Johnson. He naturally excelled in the pull drills, which where lots of his best film is. In the drills with the pads, Mahogany showed excellent strike power and placement. That said, I thought his feet looked a tad heavy. Nevertheless, Mahogany still looked very good for the most part in the positional drills. Mahogany finished his day with the agility drills. He posted a 4.53 in the short shuttle, the ninth-best among the offensive linemen this year, and a 7.85 in the three-cone drill, the 20th-best. His three-cone was somewhat off-pace, but he told me after the short shuttle that he was already pretty fatigued. It's still a solid, above-average number, so it shouldn't dissuade too many scouts; maybe he will re-do the drill at the Pro Day. Christian Mahogany only helped his draft stock by putting on an absolute clinic at the NFL Scouting Combine. It would not shock me if he elected to skip the drills at BC's pro day and just do positional work as requested by coaches and scouts. He proved that he is an excellent athlete for the position who can be a Day 1 starter at guard for nearly every NFL team. Next up is Boston College's pro day, which will likely occur in mid-to-late March. That will give players like Kyle Hergel, George Takacs, and Khris Banks an opportunity to work out and get on the radar of NFL teams. Of the three, Hergel has the best shot of being selected in the 2024 NFL Draft at the end of April and a good pro day could go a very long way toward solidifying himself as a prospect teams need to spend a pick on.) 2024 NFL Combine Risers: Amarius Mims Breaks the Mold, Troy Fautanu Shows His Skills (Christian Mahogany, OG, Boston College - Remember what I just wrote for Beebe? Well, ditto for Christian Mahogany.  One of my only knocks on Mahogany after watching his tape was that he might not be an elite athlete. I still have questions about his flexibility and recovery capacity, but his 5.13-second 40-yard dash, 32.5″ vertical, 9’1″ broad, and 4.53-second shuttle all fell into the elite category. 5 Offensive Linemen Lions Should Watch at NFL Combine (Christian Mahogany, Boston College:  Despite the struggles of Boston College in 2023, the Eagles had one of the top guard prospects in Mahogany. He finished the season with an 82.2 PFF pass-blocking grade, and didn't allow a single sack. He's a physical, violent player that seems to take pride in dominating opponents. On tape, he uses his strength to physically overwhelm his assignments. He can still develop in some areas, though, including with his footwork. Watching Mahogany, one gets a feel for his abilities as an asset in the Eagles' screen game, as well as a downfield blocker. NFL Combine preview: 10 interior OL the Lions should watch (Christian Mahogany, RG, Boston College (6-foot-2 1⁄2, 318 pounds):  Another big and powerful guard with experience in a gap-blocking scheme, Mahogany can maul defenders in the run game. When he latches onto a defender, he tries to bully him off his spot and create run lanes behind him. Things are still improving on the pass protection side of things, but he has all the skills to be a starter in a scheme like the Lions.) 2024 NFL combine: Lions looking to re-invest in powerful offensive line (G Christian Mahogany, Boston College: Started only two seasons because of an ACL injury that wiped out his 2022 campaign, but has experience at both guard positions and could make the move to center too. He also played his best ball after the ACL tear, allowing no sacks and seven total pressures on 858 snaps last season. What makes him an intriguing Lions fit is the motor and physicality. This guy just likes to hit hard. If you’re looking for all-grit candidates, this will be one to watch next week. Athleticism is an issue though, and the combine will be a big week as he tries to force his way into the Day 2 conversation.) 2024 Shrine Bowl Risers and Sliders: Malik Washington, Khristian Boyd Named Players of the Week (Christian Mahogany, OG, Boston College:  There were a lot of people who came into this week thinking he may be the best pure prospect at the event this week, and his body of work certainly did not sway anyone the other way. Christian Mahogany was strong and athletic and showed his ability to learn and adapt throughout the week. He should go earlier than some expect him to in this year’s draft.  This is a prospect that showed a lot of promise before his injury. Now he’s working his way into the NFL circuit, and he may be a steal for some team looking for interior OL help.) 2024 Shrine Bowl Day 1 Risers and Sliders: Christian Mahogany, Malik Washington Standout (Risers - Christian Mahogany, OG, Boston College:  Christian Mahogany came into the week already being viewed as one of the better prospects in Frisco, and the first day of practice for the BC product did nothing to change that opinion. The big, strong offensive lineman came in and displayed his power from the jump. He showed a quick first step and allowed that power to shine through in the 1-on-1 drills with the defensive linemen.  Mahogany was able to take that positive work and translate it to the team drills as well, where he was able to work clean through duo blocks as he moved on to the second level with fluidity. A lot of what scouts and NFL personnel thought of him coming into the week was a box checked for them after Day 1. How he can continue to progress will be something worth watching all week long.) 20 Shrine Bowl players to know before practices kick off (11. Christian Mahogany, OG, Boston College (6-3, 322):  NFL scouts were intrigued by Mahogany's rich talent as a young player on a stacked BC line that included left tackle Zion Johnson and center Alec Lindstrom. A torn ACL in June 2022 sidelined him that fall, however. Mahogany returned to garner first-team All-ACC honors at his right guard spot this past season, looking powerful off the ball in the run game and able to hit second-level targets as he got more comfortable playing on the rehabbed knee as the season progressed. Staying healthy through the pre-draft process and his first training camp will give him a shot to start as a rookie and ultimately enjoy a long career.) 2024 NFL Draft: Early prospect superlatives, including Drake Maye and Laiatu Latu (MOST PUNISHING BLOCKER: IOL CHRISTIAN MAHOGANY, BOSTON COLLEGE - Boston College interior offensive lineman Christian Mahogany was set to be one of the top guards in last year’s draft. But, unfortunately, he tore his ACL before the 2022 college football season even began and missed all of last year. Now he’s back and reminding people why he’s one of the top maulers in the country.  PFF grades each player’s performance per play from -2 to 2 by half-point increments. The better, more well-executed and more impactful the player is on a given play, the higher they grade — and vice versa. A “0” grade would be the player performing as expected. For offensive linemen, an example of earning a play grade above “1” would be dominating your block, perhaps even finishing the defender to the ground, or blocking two defenders out of the play at the same time. So far in 2023, Mahogany leads all FBS offensive linemen in plays earning a “1” grade or higher (10).) 2024 NFL draft stock watch after CFB Week 5: Who's up and who is trending down? (Up: Christian Mahogany, IOL, Boston College - Playing right guard can be relatively anonymous, even for a well-regarded prospect like Mahogany. He had a game against Virginia where he popped off the film with a dominant performance in both pass protection and run blocking.  Mahogany shows zero signs of the torn ACL back in 2022, looking more athletic and quick than he did in his early returns. NFL Draft Notes: College Football Game Recaps (Boston College guard Christian Mahogany played well in 2021 before missing the 2022 season with an injury. Florida State presented a good opportunity for Mahogany if he played well. The defensive line of the Seminoles features some future NFL competitors, including nose tackle Fabian Lovett. Overall, Mahogany had a mixed performance.  On the positive side, Mahogany blocked well in the ground game. Midway through the first half, Mahogany made a nice block in a third-and-short to help create enough of a push for a conversion. In the third quarter, Mahogany blasted Lovett off the ball and pushed him to the side to open a hole for a short touchdown run. On the flip side, Mahogany allowed some penetration into the pocket on some pass plays and gave up some pressure on his quarterback. Overall, Mahogany could be a potential starter in the NFL, but he needs to stay healthy and show improved pass protection in the weeks to come.)
