Ranking 2024 NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year candidates: Terrion Arnold situated to flourish with Lions (1. Terrion Arnold, CB, Lions:  Arnold was probably the cleanest defensive prospect on film in the entire draft, he just didn't have a ridiculous combine workout. A decade ago, he may be considered small for the outside cornerback spot. Not today, with the way receivers -- even perimeter ones -- around the league are getting smaller and lighter.  At Alabama in 2023, Arnold did it all. Tackled like a seasoned veteran, floated to the football in zone, played air-tight man coverage, found the football in the air routinely, and was a dynamic returner once he snagged the interception.  And how about his "fit" in Detroit. This was a defense in dire need of a highly confident and also awesomely gifted cornerback. Now they have one. In the 2023 regular season, the Lions finished fourth in defensive pressure rate at 41.6%, and they added butt-kicking nose tackle D.J. Reader to the front along with Marcus Davenport. The Lions are going to disrupt the quarterback. NFL divisional rankings post-free agency and draft: AFC North remains supreme; NFC North takes huge leap (2. NFC North - 2023 combined record: 35-33.  The rise of the Lions and Packers certainly boasted this division last season, with Detroit reaching the NFC Championship Game and Green Bay becoming the first No. 7 seed to beat a No. 2 seed in the postseason. Detroit added Carlton Davis, Marcus Davenport and D.J. Reader in free agency while replenishing at cornerback in the draft (Terrion Arnold, Ennis Rakestraw Jr.). Green Bay replenished at safety with Xavier McKinney (free agency) and Javon Bullard (draft) while signing Josh Jacobs.  The Bears and Vikings have rookie quarterbacks with Caleb Williams and J.J. McCarthy, yet are positioned to take a leap forward in 2024. Chicago added D'Andre Swift and Keenan Allen in free agency, then selected Rome Odunze in the top 10 of the draft to pair with Williams. McCarthy has a skill position group that has Justin Jefferson and Jordan Addison at wide receiver, T.J. Hockenson at tight end and free agent signing Aaron Jones at running back. The NFC North could compete with the AFC North for the best division. PFF Interior Defender Rankings: Top 32 ahead of the 2024 NFL season (15. ALIM MCNEILL, DETROIT LIONS - A former third-round pick, McNeill has improved each year of his professional career and was a star in 2023. He earned impressive PFF grades as both a run defender and a pass-rusher, resulting in an 86.8 overall mark that ranked him among the best players in the league.  If McNeill isn’t done improving, he could shoot up these rankings with an even better 2024. 13. DJ READER, DETROIT LIONS - A 335-pound defensive tackle, Reader has always been more than just a run-stuffer but has consistently improved his ability to create pressure throughout his career. PFF Edge Defender Rankings: Top 32 ahead of the 2024 NFL season (6. AIDAN HUTCHINSON, DETROIT LIONS - Hutchinson ascended to an elite level in his second season, earning a 91.4 pass-rush grade. His 101 quarterback pressures in the regular season ranked second only to Micah Parsons. One reason each NFC team won’t make the playoffs in 2024 (DETROIT LIONS: THE SECONDARY WIDE RECEIVERS LIMIT THE OFFENSE - Wide receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown and tight end Sam LaPorta are the Lions' top two pass-catchers, and both players ranked inside the top seven at their positions in yards per route run last season.  The team did lose Josh Reynolds in free agency, though, and he accounted for 75 targets a year ago.
