Ranking the 2024 NFC Draft Classes: The Impact of the Michael Penix Jr. Pick (3. Detroit Lions: Similar to the Eagles, the Lions addressed their secondary needs with a pair of first-round defensive backs. Detroit gets the nod over Philadelphia because Terrion Arnold might be one of the safest picks in the draft. He’s a polished technician with a similar skill set to Seattle’s Devon Witherspoon. Arnold going at No. 24 could end up being the steal of the draft. The Lions didn’t settle at cornerback and took Ennis Rakestraw Jr. in the second round. The Lions swung and missed on cornerback Cameron Sutton, who was released recently after being a top free-agent addition in 2023. Arnold should be a Day 1 starter, joining last year’s rookie sensation Brian Branch and veteran newcomer Carlton Davis III. NFL predictions: An early look at who will win each division (NFC North: 1. Detroit Lions, 2. Green Bay Packers, 3. Chicago Bears and 4. Minnesota Vikings. Cowherd likes everything about Detroit and even predicts the Lions will reach the NFC Championship game for the second straight season. While he doesn't know who they will face, he is feeling optimistic about the Packers after watching Jordan Love's improvement last season, and he praised Green Bay as the best drafting team in the league. Cowherd thinks the Bears will have a few rough Sundays while breaking in rookie quarterback Caleb Williams, but also thinks they will be a fun offense to watch. NFL Draft: Most questionable picks by each team (Lions - OT Giovanni Manu, British Columbia (Round 4, No. 126 overall). The selection of cornerback Terrion Arnold was a steal, but the operation went downhill beyond that point. Trading up for Manu was a curious decision because, despite the excitement of his size and athleticism, he is very much a project. The depth and landmarks of Canadian pass sets are different than what he will be asked to do in the NFL. 2024 NFL Draft Winners and Losers: Day 3 (Winners - Detroit Lions: The Lions only had one selection on the second day of the 2024 NFL Draft, but they came away with four potential sleeper steals on Day 3. They started off with Canadian offensive tackle Giovanni Manu, a massive blocker who has a tremendous skill set. He could be a nice depth backup who develops behind Taylor Decker and Penei Sewell. Manu has a special skill set, and in time, he could end up as the starting right tackle when Sewell moves to the blind side as Decker’s replacement. Later in the fourth-round, backup running back Sione Vaki was another nice pick by the Lions who should give them a physical runner who can spell David Montgomery to keep him fresh. Detroit then landed two very good college players for the depth of both lines in Round 6. LSU’s Mekhi Wingo showed impressive interior rush ability last year. While Mingo is undersized, he could compete for three-technique snaps and give the Lions an interior designated pass rusher to help keep nose tackle D.J. Reader fresh. Shortly later, Detroit added Boston College guard Christian Mahogany. He was a tough run blocker in college and looked like an early-rounder before dealing with some injuries. Mahogany could be a good backup who possesses upside. NFL Rumors: Scouts Rave About Steelers’ Draft, Brandon Aiyuk’s 49ers Future, and More (Detroit Lions - The prevailing belief around the NFL was that Mitchell was the top cornerback for this draft and Arnold was next, and that’s how it played out in the first round. Arnold and veteran CB Carlton Davis III will be the starters, and Rakestraw could wind up starting in 2025 and beyond if Davis doesn’t re-sign after the season ends. Depth was a real problem at the position last season, but that shouldn’t be the case going forward after the trade to acquire Davis and with the additions of the two rookies.
