NFL preseason Week 1 takeaways: How did Drake Maye, Malik Nabers do in their debuts? (Lions: After an intense week of joint practices against the New York Giants, where multiple fights occurred, most of the Lions starters didn't suit up in the first preseason game. Rookie cornerbacks Terrion Arnold and Ennis Rakestraw Jr. looked good in their debuts despite limited action. Arnold, the No. 24 overall pick, would end his day after three series while Rakestraw, a second-round pick, registered two tackles while making some solid defensive plays.  Second-year signal-caller Hendon Hooker saw his first game action since college after recovering from a torn ACL. Entering the game after halftime, Hooker ended up finding a groove, going 5-for-9 with 36 passing yards and a team-high 34 rushing yards -- including a 16-yard gain where he lowered his shoulder to get the first down near the end of the third quarter. Hooker's night would end early as he entered the locker room and wouldn't return at the start of the fourth with a concussion. -- Eric Woodyard):  https://www.espn.com/nfl/story/_/id/40780719/nfl-preseason-week-1-takeaways-top-rookies-new-players-schedule

2024 NFL preseason, Week 1: What We Learned from Thursday's doubleheader  (Giants 14 Lions 3 -Coral Smith's takeaways:  1. Giants RB shines early. The story of the offseason might have been the running back the Giants recently lost in Saquon Barkley , but their first preseason game was headlined by another RB looking to earn an increased role in Year 2. Eric Gray had 46 receiving yards and 52 rushing yards while scoring both of his team's touchdowns, highlighted by a 48-yard rushing TD in the second quarter. When he was subbed out at halftime, Gray’s 98 all-purpose yards were more than Detroit’s net yards as a team to that point. Listed as RB2 behind Devin Singletary (who did not play Thursday) on the unofficial depth chart, Gray made his case for snaps on Thursday night.  2. Hooker’s debut ended by injury. Hendon Hooker ’s long-awaited NFL (preseason) debut arrived Thursday night -- 21 months after tearing his ACL in his final college year -- but it ended with a concussion. Hooker entered in the third quarter and tested his knee early, including on a 16-yard run where he easily juked defenders and broke tackles. Hooker exited the game after that drive due to a concussion, head coach Dan Campbell announced after the game. With the preseason serving as the battlefield for Hooker and Nate Sudfeld's fight to be QB2, missing more time to injury has to be frustrating, especially considering the promise he showed in his limited time compared to Sudfeld’s struggles.):  https://www.nfl.com/news/2024-nfl-preseason-week-1-what-we-learned-from-thursday-s-doubleheader

NFL 2024 All-Under-25 Defensive Team (EDGE: Aidan Hutchinson (24) - The Michigan kid who also played his college football at Michigan and is now starring for the Detroit Lions has proven to be an NFL star, as he built on his impressive rookie season with 51 combined tackles, 11.5 sacks, 33 QB hits, seven passes defended, three forced fumbles and an interception in 2023. Hutchinson also recorded 101 pressures, which ranked second in the NFL behind the great Micah Parsons. DT: Alim McNeill (24) - Still one of the most underrated players in the league, McNeill recorded 32 combined tackles, 10 QB hits and a career-high five sacks for the Lions in just 13 games played in 2023. He's such a disruptive player in the middle, and should cash in very soon with him being in a contract year.):  https://www.cbssports.com/nfl/news/nfl-2024-all-under-25-defensive-team-super-bowl-champion-chiefs-rising-lions-lead-way-with-two-players/

Nate Sudfeld, Detroit Lions:  While 2023 third-round pick Hendon Hooker is competing for Detroit’s backup quarterback job, veteran Nate Sudfeld is QB2 on the Lions’ unofficial depth chart and started the club’s preseason opener.  Hooker flashed in his opportunities in Detroit’s exhibition game against the Giants but left with a concussion. The Tennessee product may only fall farther behind Sudfeld if he’s forced to miss practice time.):   https://www.profootballnetwork.com/nfl-backup-qb-rankings/
