Allen, Bass, Diggs end surging Detroit Lions win streak at 3 in Thanksgiving Day thriller:  https://www.clickondetroit.com/sports/2022/11/24/allen-bass-diggs-end-surging-detroit-lions-win-streak-at-3-in-thanksgiving-day-thriller/

2022 NFL season, Week 12: What We Learned from Thanksgiving Day games (Bills 28 Lions 25:  1.  Bills survive upstart Lions with late-game heroics. Buffalo's return to Detroit wasn't pretty, but Josh Allen rifled a laser to Stefon Diggs for 36 yards to set up Tyler Bass' 45-yard game-winning field goal to eke out a victory. Allen looked off much of the day due to his hampering elbow injury, missing short throws he usually makes routinely. Until the final two drives, the Bills' best plays were Allen runs as the passing game couldn't get on track for stretches. Given Buffalo was facing the NFL's worst pass defense, it was stunning to see the Bills unable to move the ball consistently. Allen struggled under pressure, going 5-of-11 for 36 yards versus the blitz. Following Allen's fourth red zone interception in his last five games, the Bills offense hit Strugglesville, punting on three consecutive possessions to allow the pesky Lions to hang around. But when he needed to, Allen made plays to win. The Bills marched 90 yards on 14 plays to take the lead late. After a Lions field goal looked to force overtime, it took just one dart from Allen to wipe out an extra frame. Good teams find a way to win when they're banged up and not playing well. Sean McDermott's team did so on Thanksgiving Day.  2.  Lions battle, but too many errors inevitably sink Dan Campbell's squad. Entering on a three-game winning streak, Detroit hung tough with the AFC-power Bills. Amon-Ra St. Brown (nine receptions for 122 yards and a touchdown) continues to see his star shine, as he repeatedly spun Bills defensive backs into the turf with fantastic routes. Jamaal Williams is a red-zone hammer, scoring his 13th TD of the season. And the defense played well for stretches, holding Buffalo to just two third-quarter points. Playing with a razor-thin margin for error, however, Campbell's team will be kicking itself for not closing the deal. The Lions moved the ball at will for stretches, but a Williams fumble in plus-territory killed a promising first-half drive. Jared Goff took a dumb sack in the end zone for a safety. Mike Badgley missed a chip-shot 29-yard field goal. Austin Bryant committed a boneheaded roughing call. And Campbell struggled with clock management down the stretch. Couple those errors with a defense that couldn't get stops on third down and a QB who missed makeable throws, and it was another Thanksgiving disappointment in Detroit. The Lions are on the rise, but Thursday showed they're still too talent-deprived to hang with the big boys consistently.  3.  Ed Oliver eats on Thanksgiving. Boy, did the Bills get a big game from the monster defensive tackle. Oliver essentially pitched a tent in the Lions' backfield, smothering plays and destroying the entire operation. Facing Lions backup guards, Oliver was too much to handle. The defensive tackle gobbled up a sack -- which went for a safety -- six tackles, two tackles for loss, four QB pressures, two QB hits, a forced fumble and a fumble recovery. Already missing key edge rushers and watching Von Miller leave with a serious knee injury, the Bills needed Oliver to make plays. He came through. Oliver has generated 19 pressures over his last three games, seven more than any other player in the NFL since Week 10, per Next Gen Stats. The 24-year-old's play doubly stings Lions fans on Turkey Day, as Detroit passed over drafting Oliver in 2019 in favor of tight end T.J. Hockenson.NFL Research: Jamaal Williams now has 13 rushing touchdowns this season. Only HOFer Barry Sanders (16 in 1991 and 14 in 1989) has had more rushing touchdowns in a full season in Lions history. Williams had 13 career rushing TDs entering the 2022 season.  Next Gen stat of the game: In his first game back following last season's ACL tear, Bills cornerback Tre'Davious White played 15 of 67 defensive snaps.):  https://www.nfl.com/news/2022-nfl-season-week-12-what-we-learned-from-thanksgiving-day-games

Grades:

CBS Grades (Lions Grade - B+:  The Lions certainly aren't a pushover anymore, as they had a golden opportunity to end their five-game losing streak on Thanksgiving Day while extending their three-game winning streak. Dan Campbell and offensive coordinator Ben Johnson had an excellent game plan and were creative in the play-calling throughout the contest. Four fumbles (two lost) hurt the Lions, yet they still held a lead in the fourth quarter against one of the best teams in the NFL.   Clock management did the Lions in, costing Detroit the opportunity at the upset. Campbell didn't take a timeout right away after a 15-yard reception by Amon-Ra St. Brown with 37 seconds left in a 25-25 game -- letting the clock run 10 seconds before a review was made by the officials to determine if the Lions got a first down. Detroit didn't get a first down on the play, as Lions quarterback Jared Goff then decided to throw a deep pass to D.J. Chark on third-and-1 from the Bills' 33-yard line with 32 seconds left. The Lions could have ran a play, got the first down, called a timeout, and had another set of downs for a closer field goal situation -- or go for the winning touchdown -- and kept time from running off the clock.   Campbell could have called a run play on third-and-1 or have Goff go underneath and get the first down (the Lions still had two timeouts left). There was no need for Goff to go deep on third-and-1, even if Chark appeared to be open on the route. The poor clock management and failure to use the timeouts cost Detroit -- allowing Allen and the Bills offense to win the game in the final 30 seconds.  The Lions can compete with the best teams in the NFL. They just have to learn how to finish them.):  https://www.cbssports.com/nfl/news/nfl-thanksgiving-day-grades-bills-earn-a-for-preventing-lions-upset-clock-management-hurts-detroit-effort/

NFL QB Index, Week 12: Jalen Hurts leapfrogs Josh Allen; Kirk Cousins slides (21. Jared Goff (2022 stats: 10 games | 63.9 pct | 2,442 pass yds | 7.5 ypa | 15 pass TD | 7 INT | 42 rush yds | 0 rush TD | 5 fumbles):  The Lions are at their best when opponents are blasted on the ground and Goff manages to steer the car without smashing it. His mostly mistake-free outing against the Giants was impressive considering the consensus pregame analysis: He was sure to be coaxed into gaffes by Don "Wink" Martindale's blitz-heavy defense. Instead, Goff was pressured just three times despite New York blitzing on 62 percent of Detroit's snaps, per NGS. This clean version of the signal-caller is good enough to keep the fun alive for a frisky Lions outfit.):  https://www.nfl.com/news/nfl-qb-index-week-12-2022-season-rankings

2022 NFL season: Six things to watch for in Bills-Lions, Giants-Cowboys, Patriots-Vikings during John Madden Thanksgiving Celebration  (Bills at Lions:  1.  Can the Lions rumble their way to an upset of the Bills? Since the early season injury to D’Andre Swift, it has been Jamaal Williams who has carried the load in the backfield for the Lions. He’s now on pace for more than 1,100 rush yards and already nearly as many touchdowns (12) this season as he’s had for the remainder of his career (13). Last week, he scored three times on red-zone carries. So there’s little mystery who is getting the ball when the Lions crash the red-zone party, and they’ve been very good down there this season. Swift has returned to the lineup, gradually receiving more work with each game and also scoring in the win over the Giants. But in a short week, it’s hard to know what all he can offer while still managing a tender ankle. The Bills largely have been good defensively this season, but if you look at a few games in particular -- the Packers certainly and even the Jets game -- certain opponents have had success running the ball against them. Look for the Lions to ride Williams, whose roughshod running style also could harass a Bills defense that played 75 snaps in Week 10 and 83 more on Sunday. 2.  Bills come back to “home” stadium where they won Sunday. In a travel week unlike any other, the Bills received word that epic snow squalls were headed their way. Their Week 11 game was moved in advance to Ford Field, and yet the Bills barely made it out of town in time before the snow hit in Buffalo and the game against the Browns started in Detroit. Beating Cleveland was a big challenge considering the Bills had lost two straight and Josh Allen didn’t look the same as he did during his early-season MVP form. And yet the Bills decided to head back home for a few days before returning for the early Thursday kickoff. Every game is crucial down the stretch for the Bills as they attempt to fend off the Dolphins, Jets and Patriots for the division crown -- and Buffalo heads to New England for a massive game next Thursday. This stretch of the season will be a big test for head coach Sean McDermott and his championship-caliber roster. They’ve been through the ringer a bit in recent weeks, and taking care of business against the Lions prior to three straight AFC East games will go a long way toward showing they are still capable of making a long run in January.):  https://www.nfl.com/news/2022-nfl-season-six-things-to-watch-for-in-bills-lions-giants-cowboys-patriots-v

QB Power Rankings: Dak in top 10; Jimmy G rising (18. Jared Goff:  One of the most curious QBs on the list, Goff's best numbers have come when Detroit is losing, signifying an ability to play catch-up. He's successfully stayed in the background during the Lions' recent hot streak. (+5)):  https://www.cbssports.com/nfl/news/2022-nfl-qb-power-rankings-week-12-cowboys-dak-prescott-49ers-jimmy-garoppolo-among-big-movers/

PFT’s Week 11 2022 NFL awards (Rookies of the week: Lions defensive end Aidan Hutchinson.  The rookie usually does his best work when chasing the quarterback. On Sunday, he pretended to do so before dropping into coverage and made an impressive interception that sparked an upset road win over the Giants.  It came with less than seven minutes in the first half. The Giants led the game, 6-3. On the second and six play that started at the New York 31, Hutchinson started to rush and then backpedaled, snatching the all at the line to gain and returning it inside the 20.  Hutchinson also recovered a fumble. The interception made him the second player since 1982 with at least five sacks and two interceptions in his first 10 career games, joining Leslie O’Neal, who did it in 1986.  Other finalists: Titans receiver Treylon Burks (seven catches, 111 yards), Packers receiver Christian Watson (two receiving touchdowns), Bills running back James Cook (86 rushing yards), Chiefs receiver Skyy Moore (five catches, 63 yards), Saints receiver Chris Olave (five catches, 102 yards, one touchdown).):  https://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2022/11/23/pfts-week-11-2022-nfl-awards/

NFL wide receiver rankings ahead of Week 12: Tyreek Hill, Justin Jefferson and more (14. AMON-RA ST. BROWN, DETROIT LIONS:  St. Brown was limited by an injury earlier in the season, but he’s back to being one of the league’s best slot receivers. He ranks sixth in the NFL in yards per route run (2.49) and is the seventh-highest-graded receiver through Week 11. It’s hard not to be impressed with the way he’s played and developed this season with the Lions.):  https://www.pff.com/news/nfl-wide-receiver-rankings-week-12-tyreek-hill-justin-jefferson-2022

NFL Rookie Rewind: Week 11Aidan Hutchinson finds the football (Aidan Hutchinson Lions - Before this year, Hutchinson had zero interceptions. That's right, zero in his whole football career. But after catching Aaron Rodgers off guard earlier this season, he did the same to Daniel Jones today.   Usually, a pass rusher, the man they call Hutch, is a zone dropper on this play with eyes on Daniel Jones. Jones fails to interpret Hutchinson's role and throws the interception as he undercuts the shallow crosser.   After a late push, the rookie would come up clutch again, recovering a fumble that sealed the victory for Detroit. Hutchinson continues to provide more than he was projected to, showing that he's much more than a "motor" guy. With the athletic profile requisite of a top-five edge defender, these plays should continue down the stretch.  Kerby Joseph continues to make plays.  Kerby Joseph Lions - Yet another Lion on this week's rewind, Joseph, is making his first appearance but has been dominant as of late.   Range and ball skills are prerequisites if you want to play safety in the NFL. Joseph showed both in college and has continued to thus far in the league. This ball was overthrown, but the intent of Joseph to collapse on the in-breaker and finish the rep with the ball in his hands shines.   The Lions and general manager Brad Holmes have hit on their 2022 selections thus far, making the team's future one worth watching.):  https://www.si.com/nfl/draft/news/nfl-rookie-rewind-week-11

Week 12 Predictions

Big lead (LIONS (+9.5) over Bills: Look, it's no secret that the Detroit Lions are our favorite team to bet on and all they do is continue to reward that confidence. Dan Campbell's suddenly-hot unit went out to New Jersey and absolutely dominated a likely playoff team in all three phases of the game. Aidan Hutchinson is looking like a legitimate game-changer. And there's a confidence present that hasn't graced the Motor City since 2014. If this team wasn't called the Lions, a person could convince themselves that they are actually — gulp — good. As for the Bills, it has to be weird to play two games in five days at the same building, one as the home team and one as the road. Sprinkle a little on the moneyline and pray at the altar of Tim "The Tool Man" Taylor. O'HARA'S WEEK 12 PREVIEW: Lions rolling into Thanksgiving with three-game winning streak (Lions-Bills pick: There is an entirely new atmosphere around the Lions. It comes from winning. Five things to watch as the Lions look to beat the Bills; plus prediction (Prediction: Lions 28, Bills 27) OK, on Sunday I picked the Lions to beat the Giants and got grief for it until afterward. The Bills have the NFL’s second-best offense and their defense allows only 17.4 points per game. Yet, they have lost two of their last three. SN Iyer (Game of Midweek I: Bills (-9.5, 54 o/u) at Lions:  The Bills had some experience adjusting to Ford Field. Although Josh Allen continued to slump, they had to be pleased about getting the traditional running game going and also spreading the ball around more effectively in the passing game. The Lions' young defense has played much better of late and made some big plays, but they struggle to multiple, diverse offenses.   Jared Goff hasn't played all that well during the Lions' winning streak and the negative game script will take them out of sticking with the run. Allen has his best game in a month in a complete road rout in a familiar venue.  Pick: Bills win 31-20):   https://www.sportingnews.com/us/nfl/news/nfl-picks-predictions-against-spread-week-12/ufqbjfktxlzkddiodl1jxpoj

CBS Breech (Buffalo (7-3) at Detroit (4-6):  I've seen the movie "Stepbrothers" enough times to know when two people are becoming best friends and definitely seems like the Bills and Lions are becoming best friends. I mean, for one, the Lions were kind enough to let the Bills borrow their house over the weekend. The Lions could have just put their place up on AirBNB, but instead, they let the Bills have it for free and it ended up working out well for everyone involved.  And let me just say, I'm glad to see that the Lions set some ground rules. Always set ground rules. These teams likely won't be best friends after this game and that's because I'm expecting things to get kind of crazy. On paper, this feels like a game that the Lions have zero chance to win, but if I've learned one thing in my life about picking NFL games, it's that teams always seem to win when you think they have zero chance to win, especially when they're coached by a guy who's most famous quote involves biting kneecaps off. I have no idea what Dan Campbell eats at his house on Thanksgiving Day, but there's a 50% chance it's kneecaps.  The big problem in this game for the Lions is that they have one of the worst defenses in the NFL this year and they'll be playing a Bills offense that has been one of the best. The Lions have given up the most yards per game and the most points per game and that's definitely not a good combination when the team you're playing ranks second in both points scored and yards per game.  If this game had been played four weeks ago, I'd probably have picked the Bills by 30, but the Lions are suddenly one of the hottest teams in football. If you combine that with the fact that the Bills have been in a slight offensive rut, that's the recipe for a game that could go down to the wire. I told you we'd talk about recipes.  The pick: Bills 30-27 over Lions ):  https://www.cbssports.com/nfl/news/nfl-week-12-picks-patriots-shock-vikings-on-thanksgiving-cowboys-steamroll-giants-packers-upset-eagles/

Buffalo Bills vs. Detroit Lions predictions and keys to Thanksgiving Day game 2022 (Sal’s prediction: Buffalo Bills 34, Detroit Lions 23.  I had the sense that Allen took a deep cleansing breath last week after getting his act together late in the first half and then going on to play a clean game. He needed that, and that might be what gets him back to being MVP-level Allen against Detroit. He really didn’t take advantage of the perfect dome conditions against the Browns, but that might happen this time around against a vulnerable Lions defense.  The Lions have played well in winning three in a row and there’s no doubt they always play hard for coach Dan Campbell, a guy who has Red Bull rather than blood running through his veins. But the Bills are clearly the better team and while I think the Lions will score some points, they won’t be able to go point for point with Buffalo.):  https://www.democratandchronicle.com/story/sports/football/nfl/bills/2022/11/22/bills-vs-lions-prediction-and-keys-to-thanksgiving-day-game/69667045007/

SN Bender (Buffalo Bills (-9) at Detroit Lions:  Detroit has lost on Thanksgiving each of the last four years. The Lions tightened up against the run against the Giants last week, but Allen's mobility is going to be an issue for this defense. Devin Singletary and James Cook will get in on the action, and that will set up play-action for Buffalo's receivers. Detroit, however, continues to improve around an offense that features a few playmakers in D'Andre Swift and Amon-Ra St. Brown. Jared Goff will have a solid game too, but the pressure of keeping up with Buffalo in the second half will lead to a pair of turnovers. Von Miller chips in a pair of sacks. Buffalo will win, but they will fall to 1-4 ATS on the road.   Pick: Bills 34, Lions 27):  https://www.sportingnews.com/us/nfl/news/nfl-picks-predictions-week-12/w3rsyuyzjfqzc1bnyzmxekhn

CBS Prisco (Buffalo Bills (-9.5) at Detroit Lions:  This has the makings of a game with a lot of offense. Both teams can score, but the Bills can really score. They will put up a big number here as Josh Allen wins a second straight game in Detroit after beating the Browns last week in the same building. The track is fast and the Bills can fly. The Lions won't keep up.  Pick: Bills 40, Lions 23):  https://www.cbssports.com/nfl/news/priscos-week-12-nfl-picks-cowboys-bills-blow-out-opponents-on-thanksgiving-titans-get-revenge-on-bengals/

CBS Sullivan (Bills at Lions, Thursday:  The Lions have been rolling the past few weeks, but I just have a hard time betting against Josh Allen with this line under double figures. Yes, Detroit's defense has played better in its previous three games, but that was against the Packers, Bears and Giants. Buffalo's offense is a different animal entirely. Allen has historically played well on Thanksgiving as the Bills are 2-0 SU in both games and the QB registered a 100+ passer rating in each contest. While I believe Buffalo's offense can get into the 30s indoors at Ford Field, I don't see the Lions doing that in this setting. Specifically, I have my doubts because of the protection in front of Jared Goff. Detroit grades as the 24th-ranked pass-blocking team in the NFL this season, according to Pro Football Focus. Meanwhile, Buffalo is the third-best pass rush team in the league under the same grading system.  Projected score: Bills 33, Lions 21):  https://www.cbssports.com/nfl/news/nfl-week-12-odds-picks-cowboys-thrash-giants-on-thanksgiving-steelers-edge-out-colts-on-monday-night/

CBS Dajani (Bills (7-3) at Lions (4-6):  Don't look now, but the Lions are on a three-game win streak! Just three teams have scored 30 or more points in five games this season, and this matchup features two of them. The third is the Kansas City Chiefs. The Lions statistically have the No. 6 offense in the NFL (366.6 yards per game), but the defense is the worst in the NFL. Sill, Jared Goff and Co. and are coming off of a surprising 31-18 beatdown of the Giants last week.  The Lions have lost five straight Thanksgiving games, and are 5-16 on the holiday over the past 21 years. Unfortunately for them, it looks like six straight losses on Thanksgiving are coming Thursday. The Bills have won two straight Thanksgiving games -- including a 31-6 beatdown of the New Orleans Saints last year. Despite falling behind to the Cleveland Browns 10-3 in the second quarter last week, the Bills reeled off 25 unanswered points, and ended up defeating Cleveland by eight points. Interestingly enough, that game was played in Detroit as well due to a Buffalo snowstorm.   Betting against the Lions on Thanksgiving feels sacrilegious, yet profitable. My heart is rooting for Dan Campbell's squad to pull off a monster upset, but I think this could be a get-right spot for the Super Bowl favorites after a weird three weeks. I'm going to lay the points with the favorites. I'll lean to the Under as well.  Prediction: Bills (-9.5) 30-20 over Lions):  https://www.cbssports.com/nfl/news/nfl-thanksgiving-best-bets-2022-top-plays-on-point-spread-totals-and-player-props-for-holiday-games/

Fox sports (Prediction: The Bills boast a truly elite defense, but I wonder if the Lions might keep this game close for longer than many expect. NFL.com (Bills win 30-23:  The Lions went into their Week 6 bye ranked dead last -- by a healthy margin -- in defensive efficiency (DVOA) through five games. In the five games since, they are 14th. Progress! The effort is there. Detroit can slow down a Buffalo team trying to simplify life for Josh Allen, and the Lions' offensive line can lean on the Bills enough to make this an entertaining game. PFT’s NFL Week 12 2022 Picks (Bills (-9.5) at Lions - MDS’s take: The annual Detroit Thanksgiving bloodbath may not be quite as ugly for the home team this year, as the Lions are riding a three-game winning streak. But it’s awfully tough to imagine them beating the Bills.  MDS’s pick: Bills 20, Lions 13.  Florio’s take: The Lions will try to feast on kneecaps before turkey. If it was anyone but the Bills, that three-game winning streak would have a great chance of extending to four.  Florio’s pick: Bills 27, Lions 20.):  https://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2022/11/23/pfts-nfl-week-12-2022-picks/

Football Meteorology For 2022 NFL Week 12 (Buffalo Bills at Detroit Lions (+9.5): As a Lions fan, I’m grateful for the three-game winning streak the team has right now; it’s first since 2017. Alas, there won’t be any extra gravy on that tasty meat. With both starting guards out with injuries and center Frank Ragnow probably in need of a game off himself, the Lions are in real trouble against a very underappreciated Bills defensive front. And that doesn’t even start with the idea of playing Josh Allen and Stefon Diggs without top CB Jeff Okudah, who is also out.  Bills 33, Lions 13):  https://football.realgm.com/analysis/3516/Football-Meteorology-For-2022-NFL-Week-12
