By 2021 he was ready for a starting role and an indispensable leader of the Oregon defense, earning First or Second Team All-Pac-12 recognition for three straight seasons from 2021-23. A model of durability and consistency, Dorlus earned 72nd percentile grades against both the run and pass in each of his last three campaigns.  Last year he generated the second-most pressures among FBS IDLs with five penalties drawn and 5.0 sacks for the Pac-12 runner-up Ducks. At 6-foot-3 and 283 pounds, Dorlus lined up outside on 44% of his snaps, as a defensive tackle on 43% of his snaps, and as a nose tackle on 13% of his snaps. Brandon Dorlus, Oregon, 6-3, 283, Redshirt Senior - Overview: Dorlus proved the opposite of most Ducks, flying north in the winter from his native state of Florida to hatch into an underrated NFL prospect, earning All-PAC-12 honors each of the past three seasons with two campaigns of First-Team honors (2021, 2023). Dorlus' 12 career sacks may not look impressive on paper but he's one of the true defensive linemen in this class who can both knock the quarterback to the turf, as well as passes when unable to get to his opponent in time, leading his position group across the country with nine tipped passes in 2023, alone.  Strengths:  Proven positional versatility, sliding up and down the line of scrimmage the past three years.  Heavy hands with light feet and good coordination between his upper and lower body to squeeze and squirm his way through gaps.
Good initial quickness off the snap, showing anticipation and the ability to surprise opponents with his burst out of both the two and three-point stances.  Showed significant improvement in knocking down passes at the line of scrimmage, recording nine in 2023 (two each in 2022 and 2021) with the arm length (33 ¼") and instincts to keep up this production at the next level.  Concerns:  Possesses a tweener frame with just average agility for his size, suggesting that he'll only get more sluggish with extra weight.  Gets too focused on ridding himself of the blocker and losing sight of the football, at times.  Lacks ideal balance and agility to break down and make secure tackles in space.  Runs hot and cold, seeming to play to his level of competition, at times.  Summary: Dorlus isn't the flashiest athlete on this list but he offers the kind of versatility and pro-readiness that scouts will appreciate. His statistics in high profile matchups against Washington (five tackles, including 1.5 for loss and a sack), Utah (two tackles, one for loss) USC (two tackles, one sack), and Oregon State (two tackles, two PBUs) only hint at his actual disruption. NFL Draft: Five under-the-radar prospects who are flying up draft boards (Oregon defensive tackle Brandon Dorlus:  While the aforementioned Cook is starting to get the attention he deserves for Missouri, on the opposite side of the country, almost all the buzz surrounding the University of Oregon is dedicated to their Heisman Trophy-contending quarterback Bo Nix, leaving some other high-caliber Ducks flying much too low on the radar of the national media.   That fact is a little surprising given that Dorlus has earned All-Pac-12 honors from both the league's coaches and media each of the past two seasons and signed with Oregon as a highly touted three-star recruit out of Fort Lauderdale. His 16.5 combined tackles for loss over the 2021-22 seasons would likely make him a household name if he played for a national title contender in the Big Ten, ACC or SEC, but you won't see him listed on many of the early mocks — which I believe will change as the draft approaches.  At 6-foot-3 and 291 pounds, the redshirt senior may lack the eye-popping girth of other top-rated defensive tackles, but he possesses rare twitch for a big man, showing the initial burst and agility to split gaps and wreak havoc in the backfield, projecting as a classic three-technique defensive tackle. Dorlus doesn't get home on some of the snaps in the clip below, but this ability to get upfield and flush quarterbacks into the arms of other Ducks will make him more highly regarded in the scouting community than his relative lack of national media hype suggests.) 2024 NFL Draft: College Football Game Recaps – Week 9 (Oregon defensive tackles Brandon Dorlus and Jordan Burch played really well against Utah. Dorlus generated some interior pressure in the pass rush, getting upfield and collapsing the pocket. He even drew a critical hold that was a drive-killer, demonstrating his quickness and burst. Dorlus had an excellent rush in the third quarter to force an incompletion on a third down. Burch set a tough edge and made a tackle for a loss when he drove the offensive tackle into the backfield before tossing him to the side to take down the ball-carrier. NFL scouts will be watching Dillon Gabriel, Tommy Eichenberg, more in Week 4 (Dorlus only has seven total sacks in 4-plus seasons in Eugene, but the flashes are as bright as some of the Ducks’ various yellow and green jerseys. He set a career-high with 9.5 tackles for loss a year ago and offers rare speed for a big man. 2024 NFL Draft EDGE rankings & analysis (7: Jonah Elliss, Utah:  Elliss (6’021/248) followed in the footsteps of his father, Luther, who also attended Utah and is a former first-round draft pick of the Detroit Lions. A former high school track athlete who ran a personal best 11.41s 100 meters, he saw consistent rotational snaps at LB as a true freshman before slotting into the starting lineup at EDGE in 2022. Elliss had a nondescript start after acclimating to the position change, but finished strong recording 18 of his 25 pressures and all 3.0 of his sacks over his last five games.  He made the leap in 2023 by finishing second nationally with 12.0 sacks despite playing in just 10 games before sustaining a season-ending injury. The Consensus All-American’s 11.4% pressure rate, 3% havoc rate and 3.9% sack rate are all superb per-snap numbers. His 85th percentile PFF overall grade and 90th% pass rush grade each ranked top-10 in the Power Five last year.  While Elliss didn’t perform any track or bench testing, he reportedly ran a 4.17s shuttle (97th%) and 6.69s 3-Cone (100th%) at his pro day, though those marks should be viewed with appropriate skepticism. His reported 38” vert (96th%) and 10’0” broad (85th%) jumps were outstanding marks and much more difficult to fudge than the movement drills. Slightly undersized with a frenetic rush style, Elliss gets off the ball in a flash and attacks his opponents with expansive 10.5” hands so he can shed and make secondary effort plays. Unrelenting motor with a varied moveset, but is likely ill-equipped for edge-setting duty against NFL-sized left tackles and needs to work on his counters. Elliss will likely see action on passing downs early on, but could eventually work his way into a starting role if things break right.) 2024 NFL Draft: Favorite players outside the top 50 (Jonah Elliss, Edge, Utah:  Most of my favorite Day 2 defensive line and edge prospects got a bump into the top 50 on my last updated board, though Trice has been a faller for me this draft cycle. But I still really like his film. Trice is a power-first player who wins by relentlessly pushing the pocket and offensive tackles into the lap of quarterbacks, but has below-average athleticism, length and bend that limits his upside as a pass rusher and impactful every down player.  Having said that, there is something to Trice’s play strength, hand usage and relentlessness on every snap. He might not have the upside of a pass rushing ace, or even as a No. 2, but he can contribute to a defense as a pass rusher and run defender (those heavy hands will can blow tackles back at the snap). He'd fit on a team that likes to rotate their line and get different pocket pushers or pass rushing styles out there (think of the Bills or Saints).  I wrote more about Elliss in my top 10 edge defenders article — he’s currently slotted outside my top 100 — but (spoilers) might get a bump for the final update. Elliss has the pass rushing juice and effort to be an impactful designated pass rusher type at the next level. He is average against the run, but against the pass he has active hands, several ways to win as a pass rusher (he’s already pulling out a wicked spin move), tested like an excellent athlete (which he flashed on film) and has production to point to. Measuring 6-foot-2, 248 pounds, he is an undersized edge rusher who surprised a lot of people by entering the draft this year. Of all the defensive linemen I’ve watched, Elliss might not have the most violent spin move, but he has the most effective one. He mentioned at the combine that he likes to base his pass rush plan around a two-hand swipe. From there he throws in more speed or power to keep offensive tackles guessing. Jonah Elliss, Utah — 6-2, 248, Junior - Overview: Just like the previously mentioned Harrell, Elliss entered the 2023 campaign already well on the radar of scouts, given the success that his father (and coach), Luther, enjoyed over 10 seasons in the NFL. With his dad now coaching defensive tackles at Utah, it made sense that Jonah – the highest-ranked recruit out of the state of Idaho in 2020 – would join him.  He played mostly as a reserve and on special teams as a freshman but earned Honorable Mention All-PAC-12 honors in his second season (recording 26 tackles, including six for loss). Prior to sustaining a season-ending shoulder injury in Week 10, Elliss led all Power Five rushers with 12 sacks and was tied for third with 16 tackles for loss.  Strengths - Sudden and slippery as a pass rusher and isn't afraid of contact.  Disproportionately long arms (33") and big hands (10 ½") which make him functionally bigger and stronger than his size suggests.  Plays with his head on a swivel, recognizing cut and crack-back blocks coming and adjusting effectively.  Terrific effort in lateral and downfield pursuit.  NFL bloodlines, with his father and two older brothers all playing in the league.  Concerns - Lacks ideal girth and anchor for run defense and already has durability concerns after his breakout 2023 campaign was cut short due to a shoulder injury.  Frenetic playing style that can leave teammates guessing as to which gap he's taking.  Great effort in pursuit but gets bounced around and loses sight of the ball.  Summary: What Elliss lacks in size, he makes up for with quickness and the pass-rush tool belt of an NFL veteran. NFL Draft: 10 elite defensive prospects to watch in Week 8's marquee matchups (Jonah Elliss, Utah, Edge Rusher, 6-2, 246, junior.  Any list of breakout stars in college football this season is incomplete if it doesn't include Elliss. To be clear, he was good a year ago, earning honorable mention All-Pac-12 honors with 26 tackles, including six tackles for loss and three sacks. But he's been dominant in 2023, currently leading Power 5 defenders with nine sacks through the first six games of the season. He's already eclipsed last year's production as a tackler (29), including behind the line of scrimmage (13).  While most fans are still just getting acquainted with Elliss, NFL scouts certainly know him — or at least his family. That is because his father, Luther, played a decade in the league for the Detroit Lions and Denver Broncos, and three of his older brothers spent time in the NFL, with Kaden (Atlanta Falcons) and Christian (Philadelphia Eagles) currently on rosters.  Those NFL bloodlines virtually guaranteed that Elliss would be heavily scouted, but he is a legitimate prospect on his own merits, demonstrating the pass rush arsenal that should make his father (now Utah's defensive line coach) proud. As his size suggests, Elliss can challenge would-be blockers with his burst upfield, but it is his strength, savvy and slipperiness that make him a nightmare. Week 4 College Football Players of the Week: Boise State Bronco Ashton Jeanty Dominates San Diego State (Defensive Player of the Week: Jonah Ellis, DE, Utah.  In the aftermath of the Utah Utes’ 14-7 win over UCLA — another one where they leant on the defense to mask offensive inefficiencies — defensive end Jonah Ellis told the assembled media that on the first play of the game, the UCLA offensive line had told him “we are going to out physical you today.” That, with the benefit of hindsight, was a massive mistake by the Bruins.  Ellis led a phenomenal Utes defensive effort that restricted Chip Kelly’s team to just nine rushing yards at 0.3 yards per clip. The Utah defensive end was responsible for five tackles for loss and 3.5 sacks against an o-line that ranked in the national top 40 ahead of the game. Notre Dame Players Show Out At 2024 Reese's Senior Bowl (CB CAM HART:  None of the former Notre Dame standouts had as good a week as Hart. He showed a little inconsistency locating the ball down the field early in the week, but was mostly fantastic. The weigh-in was a great start to the process for Hart, showcasing his incredible length at near 6-3 with long arms. It was no surprise that Hart showcased tremendous physicality throughout the week, beating up wide receivers at the line of scrimmage and through the stem. He broke underneath several routes, forcing various turnovers and throwaways.  There is some scheme dependency for Hart, forecasting much better to a zone heavy system with slightly tight hips to transition quickly enough against certain wide receivers. That will limit him to some teams but in that system, Hart clearly has starter upside. The medicals is the big remaining hurdle but Hart put evaluators on notice down in Mobile with a stellar week.) 2024 Senior Bowl: Thursday’s National Team Practice Report (Some other players who had nice practices included USC running back Marshawn Lloyd, Notre Dame cornerback Cam Hart, Oregon cornerback Khyree Jackson and New Hampshire running back Dylan Laube. Lloyd had an excellent cut back on a run that had nothing open, using a burst to accelerate to the backside. He ran well on Thursday. Hart did well in end-zone coverage, staying with receivers and using his big frame to make it difficult to get passes by him. Jackson practiced well, including making outstanding pass breakup in the end zone. Laube closed things out in nice fashion on Thursday. He has had a respectable week in Mobile.) Cam Hart also ended the week on a high note.  Although Rice beat Hart at the catch point on one 50/50 rep, Hart was able to win most of his 1-on-1 reps with his smothering length and patient, targeted physicality. There were some good-looking corners at the Senior Bowl this week. One of the more underrated prospects coming in that caught my eye was Cam Hart.  Hart has excellent size at 6'2" and 207 pounds, and he was able to mirror routes well in team periods. The Notre Dame product didn’t enter the week with the same buzz as Penn State’s Kalen King, but he showed more than enough to warrant a deep look from NFL talent evaluators as the draft process continues.) 2024 Senior Bowl: Tuesday’s National Team Practice Report (One of the cornerbacks who covered Walker well was Notre Dame’s Cam Hart. Hart had a strong opening practice, showing the potential to be a starting outside corner. In the one-on-ones Central Florida’s, Javon Baker got away with a late push off downfield, but on Hart’s next rep, he withstood a push-off attempt from Walker before ducking underneath the Tar Heels receiver to get an interception.  Hart showed nice versatility to play zone coverage or press man. At 6-foot-2, 207 pounds, Hart is a big cornerback who could be a nice value pick on Day 2 of the 2024 NFL Draft. If he works out well and runs fast at the combine, however, he could possibly rise.) 2024 Senior Bowl Risers From Weigh-Ins and Measurements: Austin McNamara, Johnny Wilson Among Winners From Weigh-Ins (Cam Hart, CB, Notre Dame | Khyree Jackson, CB, Oregon:  Cam Hart and Khyree Jackson were the only cornerbacks at the Senior Bowl to weigh in over 200 pounds. Both also came in over 6’2″ — two frames that jump out compared to the rest of the competition.  The pair completely blew away the rest of the CB room with arm length and wingspan, making them outliers compared to the rest. How these two fare in drills during the Senior Bowl will be interesting to see, given their massive difference in physical frames from the rest of their position group.) 2024 Senior Bowl Preview: Defensive Backs (Big Names - Khyree Jackson & Cam Hart: Jackson transferred to Oregon from Alabama for more playing time and got loads of it in the PNW. He’s a bigger cornerback at 6’2, 203. He was used primarily as an outside corner for the Ducks and was challenged as a third-year player. He’s very physical at the line and aggressively dictates the tempo. Injuries were a consistent theme as he was in and out of the lineup at critical moments with minor stuff. With a solid week, he could boost his stock into the top ten at his position. Teams will love his size. Another corner with great size is Notre Dame’s Hart at 6’2 204. He’s a good athlete with length and quickness. PFF said he was almost exclusively an outside corner with 500 snaps there. He also needs a big week to elevate his stock further.) 2024 NFL Draft EDGE rankings & analysis (8: Adisa Isaac, Penn State:  Hailing from Brooklyn, NY, Isaac (6’043/247) was a 2019 early enrollee who immediately played 132 highly productive reps as a true freshman, earning a 75th percentile PFF overall grade. He was primed for a feature defensive role in 2021, but tore his Achilles in the offseason which knocked him out until 2022. As is to be expected his first year post-injury saw his per snap production drop off, but he managed to start all 13 games logging 505 reps with 36 pressures, 11.0 tackles for loss and 4.0 sacks despite a disappointing 27% missed tackle rate.  Isaac finally returned to his pre-injury self this year, leading the Big Ten with 16.0 TFL in addition to a team-leading 7.5 sacks and 4.5% havoc rate. His 2.33s time-to-first-pressure average is an exceptional time, while a 4.1% sack rate led all PSU defensive linemen. The team captain also slashed his missed tackle rate from 27-to-10% while earning a strong 83rd percentile PFF overall grade.  The Second Team All-Big Ten performer ran a 1.63s 10-yard split (85th%) and 4.74s 40-yard dash, which is an 80th percentile historical mark, but was the fifth-slowest time from the 2024 NFL Combine EDGE group. His 34.5” vert (81st%) and 10’03” broad jump (92nd%) verifies Isaac’s lower leg drive and 8.99 RAS, while his 33.875” length arms are usually found on offensive tackles.  Isaac brings an urgent, hungry demeanor to his game which only enhances his above-average burst and flexibility around the loop. His long, probing arms help him to stack and shed in the run game while keeping blockers at bay on the rush. While he has a developed pass rush plan, Isaac could stand to add a little functional weight to help him stand up to NFL sized tackles to avoid getting knocked off his rush path. Insider notes on 2024 NFL Draft prospects: DL stars' draft stock polarizes scouts, Adisa Isaac impresses (Penn State’s Adisa Isaac entered the season with grades that ranged anywhere from the late third round to the fifth frame, yet a terrific senior season followed by an even better Senior Bowl began his ascension up draft boards.Isaac finished 2023 with a career-best 7.5 sacks and 16 TFLs ans went on to dominate the likes of Taliese Fuaga and Roger Rosengarten during Senior Bowl practices.His combine marks included hand times as fast as 4.70 in the 40 and a vertical jump of 34.5 inches. I’m told the Baltimore Ravens, who own the 62nd pick, and the Buffalo Bills, who hold the 60th selection, have both shown a lot of interest in Isaac. Buyer beware on these 2024 NFL Draft prospects (EDGE ADISA ISAAC, PENN STATE - Big Board Rank: 42.  PFF grades correlate well to NFL success at edge defender, and while Isaac didn't grade poorly (81.8 overall in 2023), there are concerns about how his grade breaks down and his career as a whole.  His 82.4 run-defense grade propped up his overall mark. He missed just two tackles and recorded an average tackle depth of 0.61 yards in that facet. It was a big improvement from 2022, when he came in at 60.3 with missed eight tackles, almost double the negatively graded plays as in 2023 and an average tackle depth of 2.53 yards.  His pass-rushing profile is not bad, but he is the lowest-graded pass rusher with the lowest pass-rush win rate in the top 100 of PFF’s big board.
