Al Bond to play in NFLPA Bowl (At 6-4, 305-pounds, Al Bonds is an American Athletic Conference First Team honoree after starting all 12 games of his senior year at right tackle. He played 798 of 915 offensive snaps in for the Tigers in 2014, including every snap in nine of 12 games and a career-high 94 snaps in the conference-opening win at Cincinnati. Bond blocked for an offense averaging 422 yards and 34.7 points per game, as Memphis led the league in rushing at an average of 191.8 yards per game.  Bonds also excelled off the field. He received his undergraduate degree in correctional administration and was a member of Tiger 3.0 Club for both 2011 and 2012 as well as the Spring 2014 semester. He was honored with the Glenn Jones 12th Man Award at the 2010 Blue-Gray Game, given by the Highland Hundred to a Tiger that leads through desire, determination and courage. During the first half of the Blue Devils loss to Virginia Tech he missed three wide open receivers which would’ve put the game out of reach for Duke. For the day he completed 45% of his throws, the third time this year he’s been under 50% while his touchdown-to-interception ratio stands near 2-to-1. Isaiah Johnson Wins Peach of an Athlete Award (Isaiah Johnson, Georgia Tech's career leader in tackles by a defensive back, was recognized as the 2015 Peach of an Athlete Amateur Role Model by the Atlanta Area Council of the Boy Scouts of America. The 31st Peach of an Athlete Awards Banquet was held Tuesday, March 24, at the Cobb Energy Center.  Johnson is the first Yellow Jackets football player to win the honor since Roddy Jones in 2011.  The Peach of an Athlete awards banquet, which was hosted by Fred Kalil and Sam Crenshaw, recognizes deserving athletes whose character, scholastic achievement, athletic excellence and commitment to community service most closely match the aims and ideals of the Scouting program.  Johnson, a native of Tyrone, Ga., started 12 of 13 games in 2014 as a senior safety, helping the Yellow Jackets to an 11-3 record and the 2014 Orange Bowl championship. He tallied 72 tackles -- the fourth-most on the team -- and finished his career with 283 stops. Johnson gaining notice after pro day (Former Georgia Tech safety Isaiah Johnson’s solid showing at his pro day last Friday has already paid dividends. The Houston Texans, Kansas City Chiefs and New England Patriots have all gotten in touch with Johnson or his agent following his performance at Tech’s pro day.  “I’m just glad that I opened up some eyes,” Johnson said Thursday.  Johnson, who set a school record for tackles by a defensive back with 283 career stops, was timed in the 40-yard dash in 4.55 seconds and also showed well in position drills. Six Tech pro day observations (Safety Isaiah Johnson’s numbers were solid, comparing well with safeties at the combine, and he looked good (at least to me) in drills, showing good hands. 2015 NFL Draft: Georgia Tech Preview (SS Isaiah Johnson: Prior to sitting out all of 2013 following knee surgery, Johnson wrapped up a junior year (2012) that saw him lead the team in tackles (87), including 4.5 tackles for loss, a forced fumble, a sack and an interception return for a touchdown - the second return TD of his career. He was cleared to play mid-way through 2013, but opted instead to utilize a fifth year and prepare for a full senior season in 2014. Johnson may not be a flashy safety, but he's an underrated athlete with desirable size and good speed who plays physical in the box and demonstrates good instincts both in coverage and against the run. He redirects well, has a strong first-step downhill and plays physical while maintaining good technique as a tackler. And although he's not a vacuum, Johnson has been a better-than-fair playmaker as a pass defender with five career interceptions including two that were returned for touchdowns. He's also been a dean's list student and has been active in his community, so he comes with desirable character qualities. Johnson's NFL prospects will depend almost wholly on his ability to rebound from the knee injury, as he has certainly shown the traits, both tangible and intangible, that NFL teams look for in a starting-caliber safety, and a strong senior campaign could make him a draft target next spring.)

Week 11 Risers and Sliders (Small School Prospects- Vernon Johnson/WR & Ricky Collins/WR Texas A&M Commerce: Two weeks ago it was a pair of cornerbacks from CSU-Pubelo receiving mention and this time we move further south and concentrate on two receivers. Johnson is a speedster who entered the season with middle round grades from scouts while Collins is a reliably handed wide out that receives little mention. Johnson, whose caught 66 passes for 998 yards and 10 scores this season, has been compared to former Pittsburg State wide out Jon Brown, the successful third round pick of the Arizona Cardinals. Collins is just as explosive, averaging 17.4 yards on 59 receptions this year. He too has 10 touchdown catches to his credit this year. Five Skill Position Prospects To Know (Erik Lora: Lora immediately grabbed my attention during a game in which I had been evaluating quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo. In the first quarter, he made a great catch in traffic, then a violent crack-back block to get the running back to the corner. No one is ever going to confuse Lora with a speedster who can outrun defenses to score long touchdowns, but he does have quick feet off the ball and is able to accelerate to full speed more quickly than he gets credit for. His precision when running routes, consistency maintaining his stem and knowledge of how to set up defenders enables him to get separation from defenders regularly. When not battling man coverage, he uses his instincts, awareness and football intelligence to find open spots, sit down and gets his head around quickly. I love that when the quarterback is forced from the pocket, Lora does an outstanding job of working back toward him to give the passer a target. A month ago I would have bet that Lora would be a seventh-round pick at best, because so many scouts questioned his speed, but after running in the low 4.4 range at Northwestern's pro day, you can be sure that some team will take a gamble on him on Day Three.) Kent State’s Casey Pierce, Miami playmaker Clive Walford among TE prospects Browns could consider (As a junior in high school, Casey Pierce was the dual-threat quarterback for his Normandy High team in Parma. From a big picture standpoint, Pierce and Walford are relatively new to the position -- especially when compared to quarterbacks who have been throwing passes since they were in the crib -- but both proved to be among the most valuable at a position that continues to evolve in the NFL. They continued their ascent toward a future that seemed unfathomable just a few years ago with respectively strong performances before a bevy of NFL coaches, scouts and general managers at the Senior Bowl.  Pierce did just about everything at Normandy except play tight end. After playing quarterback and a slew of defensive positions in high school, he ultimately walked on at Kent State and bided his time before he was offered a scholarship entering his third of five years with the program. As a junior, Pierce broke out with 33 catches for 364 yards and five touchdowns. He nearly doubled that production as a senior, finishing with 60 catches for 641 yards and six touchdowns in an 11-game season. The Golden Flashes’ penultimate game of the year at Buffalo was snowed out.

Williams draws interest after Pro Day workout ( A second Alfred State College football player is looking to join former Pioneer Rod Streater in the NFL. Record-setting running back Rasheed Williams, ASC’s all-time career rushing leader, put his talents on display this past Wednesday for NFL scouts in a Pro Day workout session at Alfred State.  The tryout was the third for the Pioneers’ senior, who has reportedly see his stock rise for the 2015 NFL Draft, scheduled for April 30-May 2 in Chicago. Among those teams showing interest have been the Houston Texans, New York Jets and Arizona Cardinals.  During Wednesday’s nearly three-hour pro day, the 6-1, 215-pound running back performed the broad jump, vertical jump, a 225-pound bench press drill, the 40-yard dash, various cone and agility drills, and caught passes from out of the backfield.  This past season, Williams, from Swedesboro, N.J., rushed for an Alfred State record 1,676 yards and 16 touchdowns in nine games. He recorded over 100 yards rushing in a game eight times and averaged 6.7 yards per carry and 186.2 per game. He broke or tied 11 records during this two-year career with the Pioneers, including most career rushing touchdowns (26) and most career rushing yards (2,693).  Williams previously participated in the NFL regional combine in Chicago in early March and then did a private workout for the Texans a week later. Former UCF football players bolt Florida to prep for NFL (College football seniors dreaming of the NFL often travel far and wide to train. And for former UCF offensive lineman Torrian Wilson, that includes heading to cold Michigan to workout out a place called "House of Pain." "I’m ready for whatever I’ll be doing there," Wilson said with a chuckle at the facility's name. Wilson is represented by sports agent Doctor Ping and the facility, he says, specializes in training offensive linemen. His workout regime will include weightlifting, swimming, hill and mountain running and jiu jitsu. "It helps with quick feet and hands because you’re going against pros in jiu jitsu and karate classes," Wilson said. "If you don’t shoot your hands quick enough, then you get hit." The experience promises to be intense, but one that's necessary in Wilson's pursuit to join an NFL team. Wilson recently competed in the Medal of Honor bowl game January 10th where he trained with venerable coaches Joe Jacoby, a former OL for the Washington Redskins and Joe DeLamielleure, who played 12 seasons with the Buffalo Bills. Wilson's team won the game where the National all-stars defeated the American all-stars 26-14. "I didn’t want to leave my collegiant career on a losing note," Wilson said of UCF's loss to NC State in the Bitcoin St. Pete Bowl in December. NFP Prospect Focus: Zach Zenner and DeAndre Smelter (Zach Zenner – RB – South Dakota State: Zenner is a highly productive running back at an FCS level school. In each of the last three seasons at South Dakota State, Zenner has run for over 2000 yards. His career total was over 6500 yards! Zenner played in the East-West Game, and while at that game, he measured 5114 – 218, so he is easily big enough to withstand the rigors of the NFL. He is a good athlete with good play speed. I would estimate that he will run in the mid 4.5’s. He has very good balance, plays with strength and has the quick feet and loose hips to make defenders miss.  Zenner has good initial quickness and very good vision/instincts. He gets to the hole quickly, but at the same time, he has the patience to find a seam. He does a good job setting up blocks and shows the ability to create when a hole isn’t there. He runs under his pads with power and can consistently get yards after contact. While not a consistent pile driver, he has the ability to get the tough yards. Zenner is a consistent outside runner at the FCS level and can easily turn the corner. Once in the open field, he is more of a one cut north/south type runner. He can make defenders miss, but in short, he tries to find the quickest way to get yards.  As a receiver, he is used mostly on shorter type routes and has very reliable hands. Once the ball is in his hands, he gets up field. He needs work on his pass protection. He is willing but lacks proper technique. He needs to learn to use his hands better and face up. Overall, Zenner is very talented. While he will need some development time coming from the FCS level of competition, he has the traits to be an eventual starter in the league. 2015 Shrine Game: Day Two West Practice Notes (At various points of Monday’s practice, South Dakota State tailback Zach Zenner did not look as if he belonged. He successfully flipped the script on Tuesday. Zenner maintained his quiet, serious demeanor, but coaches had to appreciate the consistency of his receiving and running work, as well as his competitiveness. He did his job, and even showed some interesting athleticism. Crockett’s competitiveness (and constant yammering) may have rubbed off on Zenner. On one particular run, after a little bit of contact, instead of pulling up and going back to the huddle Zenner decided to challenge Stanford safety Jordan Richards to a speed duel. Richards looked as if he were expecting Zenner to pull up, and when he realized Zenner had no intention of doing so until he had run 80 yards to the end zone he also reached down and tried to flash his speed. 10 Things I’ve Learned from Shrine Game Practices (Zenner is fairly reserved and more of an inside-out runner. He’s got nifty feet in tight quarters, able to turn himself and dodge hits in the box. Zenner runs with good pad level and seems to always find every inch he can possibly gain. On Wednesday he took a stretch run and really turned the corner nicely, quickly getting his shoulders and hips squared upfield and bursting forward. On the field he has some early Ray Rice to his game. He was the best back on either team in passing drills.) Shrine Week Notes Day (Some other players that impressed were Zach Zenner, Bobby McCain and Fritz Etienne. Zenner showed phenomenal balance and explosiveness while also keep his vision strong. Zenner looks like a high schooler when his helmet comes off but he certainly does not play like one. The Memphis boys McCain and Ettiene flashed big play ability as Etienne had a few near interceptions and plenty of pass breakups. Ettiene is very raw but he is physical and plays 100 percent at all times. McCain was very coachable as he struggled early in practice with some awareness and technique issues but he was able to bounce back in the second half of practice with strong coverage ability. I was not very focused on the trenches play today as I mostly watched the skill players and was very keen on several guys. Others with decent performances were Damian Swann and Deon Long.) South Dakota State tops Montana State behind Zach Zenner's career day (Zach Zenner accounted for 324 all-purpose yards and scored a career-high five touchdowns to lead South Dakota State to a 47-40 victory against Montana State Saturday in the opening round of the Football Championship Subdivision playoffs at a snowy Bobcat Stadium. A Walter Payton Award candidate, Zenner tallied the first of four long scores on the second play from scrimmage and a mere 30 seconds into the game with a 45-yard touchdown run through the Bobcat defense.
