First impressions: Draft classes ranked from 1-32 (20. Detroit Lions: Round 1 seemed a little early for G Laken Tomlinson, but he might not have been around when the Lions picked in the second round. Reacquiring veteran G Manny Ramirez should temper any concerns about the blocking in front of QB Matthew Stafford this year. The arrival of second-round RB Ameer Abdullah almost surely means Reggie Bush won't be missed. Brandon Bridge signs with Lions (Neither South Alabama quarterback Brandon Bridge, a native of Mississauga, Ont., nor Yale running back Tyler Varga of Kitchener, Ont., were selected. Both were projected as potential late-round selections but could sign NFL deals as undrafted free agents. The six-foot-four, 229-pound Bridge politely declined comment immediately following the draft but later Saturday signed as a free agent with the Detroit Lions. Bridge, who has run a 4.64-second 40-yard dash, appeared in 11 games last year with the Jaguars, completing 160 of 307 passes (52.1 per cent) for 1,927 yards with 15 touchdowns and eight interceptions. He also ran for 297 yards and four TDs. SI's Draft Grades (Detroit Lions: A-: The Lions have dealt with offensive line issues even as they've established themselves as one of the NFL's more prolific pass-heavy teams in the last few seasons. With their first two picks in the draft, they sought to bring more balance to the Force, so to speak. First-round guard Laken Tomlinson from Duke is a big, smart, aggressive player whose stock has been rising. And Nebraska back Ameer Abdullah is a great fit for Jim Caldwell's scheme as a pure one-cut-and-go runner. Third-round cornerback Alex Carter from Stanford may project better as a safety in the long run. He's a little too slow in his transitions to deal with the best outside receivers. Fourth-round defensive tackle Gabe Wright from Auburn won't make anyone forget about Ndamukong Suh, but he is a reliable rotational player with some production potential. 2015 NFL Draft winners & losers: Browns, Falcons, Chiefs nailed it (Detroit Lions: Best Pick: I loved the pick of guard Laken Tomlinson in the first round. He gives them a great pair of guards with Larry Warford. They will be able to run the football now with those two power players. Questionable move: I like running back Ameer Abdullah, but they needed to get more of a power runner and the second round was a little high for him. He also has to cut down on his fumbling. Third-day gem: CB Quandre Diggs was a four-year starter at Texas, but he is short at 5-9. That would likely make him an ideal slot corner, but in the sixth round that is a nice pick. Analysis: Over the course of the three days, the Lions did a solid job. It's clear they want to help their run game. They also traded to get Denver center Manny Ramirez, who should start. By allowing John Elway to take Missouri’s Shane Ray 23rd overall, the Lions picked up veteran center Manny Ramirez in a trade and selected a polished guard in Duke’s Laken Tomlinson. Detroit got a swing-for-the-fences threat in Nebraska’s Ameer Abdullah at 57th overall. Teryl Austin’s defense then scored a long, athletic cornerback in Alex Carter on Day 2.
