Gabe Wright is a somewhat big dude: The defensive tackle is going to have eye test comparisons to Ndamukong Suh -- mostly because he is wearing his number so it is human nature for the brain to head to that place. So he’s a classic case of a guy you see all the traits that you look for in a one-gap player. You can see it on film. He’s athletic. He’s got very good movement. He was quick off the ball. At times you even thought he was explosive with his first step. He has the natural athleticism and quick feet to be effective as a three-technique, one-gap penetrator. Lions can't count on much defensive help from draftees (The Lions probably won't get nearly the same return from the three defensive players they drafted, but defensive coordinator Teryl Austin said that he does expect third- and fourth-round picks Alex Carter and Gabe Wright, respectively, to at least be rotational players as rookies."We really like Gabe," Austin said. "He's a really hard competitor. He played a lot of football in the SEC. Walterfootball's Wednesday's South practice report (There were a few standouts among the linemen on Wednesday, one of which was Auburn defensive tackle Gabe Wright. He started well in the one-on-ones with wins against Georgia Tech guard Shaq Mason and Florida State guarder Jackson. The rep against Jackson stood out as Wright had the Seminole on roller skates. He used that bull rush to dispatch Alabama's Austin Shepherd easily. Wright has put together back-to-back practices that have been impressive.  The only blocker who really stood out against Wright was Alabama's Arie Kouandjio. They had some spirited reps with each getting wins. Both players also came close to getting into some fights as Kouandjio took exception to some of Wright's scrapping. 2015 NFL Draft: Auburn Preview (4. DT Gabe Wright, Senior (6-2 | 285 | 4.98 | #90): Ford's speed off the edge played a critical role in Auburn's pass rush a year ago but Wright's burst and agility as an interior threat was also key. Wright started a career-high 11 games for the Tigers last season (35 tackles, including 8.5 for loss) and has been part of Auburn's rotation along the defensive line since stepping onto the field as a true freshman. Wright reportedly played at 309 pounds a season ago but is now in the 285-290 range as Auburn is hoping to feature him not only in the middle but at defensive end in 2014 as part of their "Rhino" package. Wright has terrific initial quickness, which he can use to penetrate gaps and wreak havoc in the backfield. At times he is so consumed with rushing upfield that he loses sight of the ball and it is hoped that with the loss of weight, he'll be better suited to changing directions and making more plays in pursuit. He has very active hands to swim past would-be blockers and impair the vision of the quarterback.
