Favorite 2023 NFL Draft picks for every team: Deuce Vaughn, Christian Gonzalez and more (Detroit Lions: S Brian Branch, Round 2, Pick 45:  I would have been happy about the Lions drafting Branch at No. 18, so getting him at No. 45 was an absolute steal — and a perfect fit. He is a potential year-one starter.  What was your favorite pick of the draft?  Walder: Quarterback Hendon Hooker to the Detroit Lions at No. 68. Questions about Hooker's age, recovery from a torn ACL and transition from that Tennessee offense to the pros are all fair. But in the third round, it's a tolerable risk for Detroit to take for the potential upside of a quarterback who ranked No. 1 in QBR last season. He also won't be rushed onto the field with Jared Goff in line to be the starter.  What was the biggest head-scratching pick?  Miller: Linebacker Jack Campbell to the Detroit Lions at No. 18. Campbell is a good player, and middle linebacker was a moderate need for the Lions. But the Mike linebacker position has been devalued across the league, and Campbell could have been drafted later after a trade down the board. This isn't knocking the player but rather questioning the value this early in the draft.  Moody: Running back Jahmyr Gibbs to the Detroit Lions at No. 12. Detroit's decision to draft Gibbs this early might not have been the wisest move, as many draft experts had projected him as a late first-round pick at best. Despite his playmaking ability, superb route running and reliable hands, the Lions missed an opportunity to address more pressing needs on their team. Adding to the confusion, they had already signed back David Montgomery in free agency.  Jordan Reid: Campbell to the Lions at No. 18. The Lions entered the draft with two first-round selections and prime opportunities to address premium positions but failed to do that. Campbell is an instinctive and productive linebacker, but the selection seemed premature. 2023 Rookie Quarterback Tiers: Starters, high-end backups and career backups (High-end Backups - HENDON HOOKER, DETROIT LIONS:  Let’s be clear here: Very little of what Hooker did at Tennessee will be relevant in the NFL. It was so far removed from an NFL system that pure projection of his traits and athleticism are what put him into the high-end backup tier. Hooker’s grades improved each of the past three years en route to an elite 90.9 grade in 2022, and he provided Tennessee with national title hopes before his devastating ACL injury derailed the Volunteers' season. Hooker has an accurate deep ball and excelled at what he was asked to do. 2023 NFL season: 32 teams, 32 people to root for (Detroit Lions - MALCOLM RODRIGUEZ:  A 2022 sixth-round pick, "Rodrigo" became an overnight star during HBO's Hard Knocks: Training Camp with the Detroit Lions, and went on to enjoy a great rookie season on the field. He totaled 87 tackles (eight for loss), three QB hits and a sack in 16 games with 15 starts. As a sixth-round draft pick myself, I know the young linebacker will have to prove himself every year; though he played well in 2022, nothing is promised for 2023. With the Lions re-signing Alex Anzalone in free agency and drafting Jack Campbell in the Round 1 of the 2023 NFL Draft, I'm rooting for Rodriguez to beat the odds once again, earning a spot as a starter and making a big jump in Year 2.):  https://www.nfl.com/news/2023-nfl-season-32-teams-32-people-to-root-for

4-Down Territory: Best free agents, scheme fits, rising and falling NFL teams (Which NFL teams did the most to set themselves up for the playoffs this offseason? Kyle: So, this might get me kicked out of whatever section of football nerdom I reside in, but I think it’s the Lions. They were already in a good spot in the NFC North, and we can quibble with the value in their draft. However – I think Jahmyr Gibbs can play and I think he’s going to be really good in that offense assuming they deploy him in an Alvin Kamara-type role. Jack Campbell will be a fine LB on first and second down, and I genuinely think Sam LaPorta can be a difference maker for them in the post-TJ Hockenson era.
