There are questions about whether DeJean fits better at safety or cornerback, but the Lions have needs at both positions. The Iowa product fits the Lions' need of "football player" as well, as he also can handle punt return duties and did so at a high level last season. 2024 NFL Draft Cornerbacks Rankings and Analysis (5 - Cooper DeJean, Iowa:  DeJean (6’004/202) was a star AAU basketball player in addition to being a local Odebolt, IA legend for his two-way football stardom, playing quarterback and DB in addition to being lethal returning kicks on special teams. A rou-star 2021 fall camp arrival, DeJean bided his time as a special teamer before exploding on the scene in 2022 with a season for the Iowa ages.  He started all 13 games while playing mostly corner, but also spending 140 snaps in the slot and another 91 snaps in the box to take advantage of his hybrid safety skillset. He recorded 75 tackles, 25 stops and five interceptions, three of which were returned for touchdowns. The Second Team All-Big Ten corner accounted for a microscopic 4% missed tackle rate (4th in FBS) with 2.8 adjusted yards per target which greatly contributed to his 89th% PFF defensive grade.  DeJean was named to the coveted Bruce Feldman’s Freaks List prior to 2023 and delivered another praiseworthy campaign of 41 tackles, seven PBU and two interceptions before suffering a broken right leg that limited his season to 10 games. The Big Ten Defensive Back of the Year in 2023, DeJean shifted to corner full-time and flourished by limiting opponents to a 38% catch rate with a meager 44 yards after catch allowed on 20 receptions.  Though he was unable to test at the Combine, Iowa’s CB1 ran a 4.46s 40-yard dash (80th%) with a 1.52s 10-yard split (90th%) and 38.5” vertical (88th%) for a 9.85 RAS, though he opted to not perform any agility tests.) Favorite options for the Detroit Lions on Day 1 of the 2024 NFL Draft (Cooper DeJean, CB/S, Iowa:  It sure feels like the Lions would need to trade up to get Cooper DeJean out of Iowa at this point. As we know though, the draft is always unpredictable. Regardless, I think DeJean would be a great fit in Detroit’s defensive scheme. After all, they’ve shown that they’re willing to dip into the talent pool from Iowa (Sam LaPorta and Jack Campbell) so they could try it again this year.  DeJean is a well-built defensive back who has the physicality and athleticism needed to play anywhere in the defensive backfield. He’s experienced at both safety and cornerback, but I could see a team such as the Lions try him on the perimeter before placing him over the top of the defense. With his special teams ability, he should carve out a role immediately with their unit as well.  Best suited to play in zone coverage while in cover 3 or quarters coverage, he can also play in man coverage. At times, he plays stiff so that could lead to some issues against more fluid receivers. There’s potential for DeJean to be a versatile chess piece that can be moved around the defense in Detroit. 2024 NFL Draft Stock – Post-Combine VI (Up - Cooper DeJean, CB/S, Iowa:  As we reported months ago, DeJean was expected to be a workout warrior, and he put his excellent skill set on display in a workout for NFL teams last week. DeJean proved that he has size, speed and explosion. To go along with strong tape, DeJean has a lot of athletic upside while also drawing rave reviews for football character. Showing NFL teams that he was healthy enough to do the workout and is on track to be ready for the start of training camp helps to check a box for DeJean. I have DeJean going in the top 25 of my 2024 NFL Mock Draft, and he looks like a safe bet now to get selected on the opening night of the draft.) Very good football player."  Highest he could get drafted: 18th overall pick.  Lowest he could get drafted: 28th overall pick.  Final Thoughts:   DeJean answered the questions about his athleticism at his Pro Day, running a 40-yard dash in the 4.4s while recording a jump-out-the-gym vertical jump (38.5 inches) and broad jump (10 feet, four inches). He was predominantly an outside corner for Iowa in 2023 (614 snaps per Pro Football Focus), but he also moved around and lined up at nickel (23 snaps), strong safety (22 snaps), edge (27) and free safety (one snap). DeJean didn't allow a touchdown last season, and he has a ball magnet in 2022 with five interceptions, including an Iowa single-season record three pick sixes. DeJean also shines in zone coverage, diagnosing play designs pre-snap and jumping into throwing lanes thanks to being able to keep eyes on the quarterback as well as the receivers in the route progression. He did miss the last four games of 2023 after suffering a leg injury in practice, but his pro day workout erased those concerns. Lions 2024 draft: A cornerback for every round (First round: Cooper DeJean, Iowa - The first round is a tough projection for cornerbacks at No. 29. Presuming Terrion Arnold and Quinyon Mitchell are gone, the rest of the potentially available pool is strong but imperfect in some critical way. I opted for DeJean more for his positional versatility and playmaking, as well as his outstanding athletic potential.  What I like:  Proven high-level versatility to play either outside CB or free safety.  Exceptional height/weight/speed combination.  Very good at attacking the ball in the air.  Big hitter with disciplined attack angles in the run game.  Sound open-field tackler and he’s quick to come off his cover mark to help when the throw goes elsewhere.  Negatives:  Not the most fluid mover laterally. Doesn’t play on train tracks, but quicker/shiftier receivers can give him trouble.  Tight hip flips when he has to turn and chase in man coverage.  Might be a better safety prospect than cornerback.  DeJean might not last to No. 29 after his outstanding pro day testing, but he’s a great fit for Aaron Glenn’s aggressive man and varying zone shells. 2024 NFL Draft CB rankings: 5 first-round grades among top 10 prospects (4. Cooper DeJean, Iowa — 6-1, 203, Junior.  Overview: A two-way player who guided his prep team to back-to-back state championships while starring at quarterback and safety, DeJean signed with his home-state Hawkeyes and earned a start (at safety) as a true freshman. He emerged as one of the nation's top playmakers in 2022, ranking second in the Big Ten with five interceptions and setting a school single-season record by returning three of them for touchdowns. Despite missing the final four games of the 2023 campaign, DeJean was named a consensus All-American and the Tatum-Woodson Big Ten Defensive Back of the Year before leaving early for the NFL with career totals of 120 tackles, including five for loss, 13 pass breakups, seven interceptions and four total touchdowns, including a 70-yard punt return game-winner in 2023 to beat Michigan State.  Strengths:  Rare size for the position with excellent height and a thick, well-developed musculature that has some projecting him as a future safety.  Possesses the bulk, instincts and open-field tackling skills to handle this switch – and played some safety at Iowa — but is plenty athletic enough to remain at cornerback, accelerating smoothly downfield and showing impressive balance and change-of-direction to shadow receivers' moments.  Allowed a total of two touchdowns (according to Pro Football Focus) in 30 career games at Iowa, including none in 2023.  Exceptional ball skills. Top 8 candidates (PICK: Cooper DeJean, CB, Iowa.  DeJean sustained a season-ending fibula injury in November, forcing him to miss the Senior Bowl and NFL Scouting Combine, but he tested well at his private pro day on Monday. While he's still a likely first-round pick, if not for the injury, I believe the Iowa cornerback would be a sure-fire top-15 selection. He excels in man and zone coverage and has great ball skills with the ability to take it the distance -- thanks to his return ability. 2024 NFL Draft: Cornerback prospect superlatives (BEST BALL SKILLS: COOPER DEJEAN, IOWA.  DeJean has fantastic production and feel in off-zone coverage, and that has led to an impressive display of ball skills. That’s not to say he can’t play man — he can do it all as CB1 on my board — but DeJean excels when playing a little bit off the line of scrimmage and keeping his eyes on the quarterback. His seven interceptions over the past two years tied for sixth in the FBS and tied for the most in the 2024 cornerback class with Dwight McGlothern and Mike Sainristil. DeJean wasn’t able to test at the NFL scouting combine or his pro day, but he has the overall athleticism to be a ball hawk at the next level.  Alabama’s Terrion Arnold is right up there for this superlative, as well.  BEST TACKLER: COOPER DEJEAN, IOWA.  There are a handful of really impressive tacklers from the cornerback group, including Missouri‘s Ennis Rakestraw Jr., Wake Forest‘s Caelen Carson and Notre Dame‘s Cam Hart. But for the CB1 types, DeJean will never make you say, “He’s great in coverage but a liability in run support.” At 6-foot 1/2 and over 200 pounds, he has the size to blow up blockers and make tackles on screens and against running backs getting to the sideline out of the backfield. He missed just 10 tackles and made 35 solo stops with 11 tackles for loss or no gain over the last two seasons. CB COOPER DEJEAN, IOWA:  Though King and DeJean won’t line up against one another, Iowa versus Penn State features two of the best cornerbacks the 2024 NFL Draft class has to offer. On the Nittany Lions’ side, King is struggling more this year, earning a 59.4 coverage grade through three games. He recorded an elite 90.6 grade in that category last season. The biggest difference for King is the ball production; he had 16 forced incompletions last season but has tallied only one this year.  As for DeJean, he was one of the top coverage players in college football last year and continues to be this year. 6 Draft Prospects Lions Should Watch (Iowa CB Cooper DeJean:  DeJean is off to a hot start in 2023, having already totaled 17 tackles in his first two games. Now, the senior will look to continue his success against Western Michigan.  He is the latest in a line of Iowa cornerbacks to garner attention, joining Riley Moss from last season. What sets DeJean apart is his ability to generate takeaways, as he had five last season. Three of those interceptions were returned for scores last season, a sign of his true ability to be a defensive playmaker. This fits the mold of what Aaron Glenn is looking for in his secondary. To this point, he has earned a 76.3 Pro Football Focus coverage grade, as well as a 79.0 tackling grade. College Football Week 2: 2024 Draft prospects to watch, including Shedeur Sanders, Michael Pratt and Alabama vs Texas (CBS T.J. 2024 NFL Draft: College Football Game Recaps – Week 1 (Iowa cornerback Cooper DeJean enters the 2023 season as an early-round prospect for the 2024 NFL Draft. Several prominent 2024 NFL draft prospects make this year's CFB 'Freaks' list (Iowa DB Cooper DeJean:  DeJean earned the No. 5 spot on the preseason 2024 cornerback rankings with his playmaking ability and positional versatility for the Hawkeyes.  The Iowa CB earned the No. 14 spot on Feldman’s list with attributes that read like a dream for an outside cornerback, The former high school quarterback (who also lettered three times in basketball, track and baseball each) won the Iowa state long jump title (23-7 1/2 inches) and 100 meters (11.16) and has continued to get more explosive since he’s been in college.  This offseason, he spent a week with NFL combine trainer Jordan Luallen, who clocked DeJean at 0.92 in his flying 10s and had him at 2.39 in his 20-yard sprint out of a two-point stance.  If DeJean plays as well as he did in 2022 and posts those athletic numbers at the combine, it’s very hard to see him not being a top-20 overall pick.)
