6 Players Lions Could Trade up for in 2024 NFL Draft (Terrion Arnold, CB, Alabama:  Arnold might be the cornerback that fits the Lions the best among all the options. While he doesn't have the elite speed, he does have just about every other trait that would appeal to the Lions.  The Alabama product has elite production from a takeaway perspective, as he led the SEC in interceptions last season as well as pass breakups. He's disciplined in covering routes, as his feet follow the receiver and he has the instincts to get on top of breaks.  Additionally, analysts rave about Arnold's football IQ. Having played for Nick Saban, he has an understanding in one of the most complex defenses at the collegiate level. 2024 NFL Draft Cornerbacks Rankings and Analysis (1 - Terrion Arnold, Alabama:  Arnold (5’116/189) originally started playing football in order to stay sharp physically for basketball season, which is his first love and the sport he initially thought he would play in college. Considered a four-star safety prospect out of high school, he transitioned to cornerback shortly after arriving on campus in 2021 and didn’t play a snap his true freshman season as he acclimated to the pace of play at the SEC level. He started the 2022 season opener opposite Kool-Aid McKinstry and was targeted often downfield until he proved worthy of his CB2 role, leading the Tide with a 16.7 ADOT. Arnold gave up a few chunk plays as he cut his teeth ranking last year allowing an unexceptional 1.33 yard per coverage snap. However, his 51% completion rate, 9 PBU and 73rd percentile PFF defensive grade were strong enough for Arnold to receive Freshman All-American recognition.  While Arnold was overshadowed by McKinstry in 2022, he took a backseat to nobody this year by leading the SEC with 16 PBU and five interceptions with the third-highest PFF defensive grade in the Power Five. The First Team All-American forced incompletions 29% of the time and slashed his yards allowed per cover snap to .58 as he climbed to the top of the 2024 NFL Draft cornerback leaderboard.  At the Combine his 1.52s 10-yard split was a strong 90th% time, but his 4.50s 40-yard dash is a less impressive 70th% mark. Arnold ran a magnificent 6.69s 3-Cone (96th%) at his pro day to go with a 10’09” broad jump (93rd%) for a rock solid 9.27 RAS that verifies the dynamism he displays on the field. His safety background is evident when it’s time to converge on a ball carrier and also in his savvy coverage instincts. Arnold is savvy enough in zone coverage to pick up his responsibility in phase, but still keep his eyes in the backfield reading before peeling off his man and making the play on the ball before the quarterback has released the ball. It reminds me of the way Texans S Jalen Pitre would hedge his responsibilities playing the STAR position at Baylor. Advanced stuff. Caputo: Lions NEED to draft a high-end cornerback (Alabama’s Terrion Arnold is not as big and fast as Mitchell and DeJean, but is incredibly fluid in movement and instinctive. His teammate, Kool-Aid McKinstry, is exceptional at mimicking receiver movements. Any would be a solid first-round pick for the Lions at 29, but unlikely to be there. Arnold played all over the football field (539 snaps at outside corner, 196 snaps at slot corner, 67 snaps at strong safety, three snaps at free safety and three snaps at defensive line), according Pro Football Focus. His footwork is fluid, and he has the speed to stick with receivers. Arnold's 2023 numbers back up what you see on tape: he registered the most incomplete targets (43) among SEC players last season, his five interceptions co-led the conference in 2023 and he didn't allow a touchdown on 445 coverage snaps. 2024 NFL Draft: Top 10 CBs don't feature one particular standout, but it's a good class (2. Terrion Arnold, Alabama:  Arnold’s role and influence on Alabama’s defense expanded throughout the 2023 season. Whether it was from the outside or in the slot, Arnold loved to challenge wide receivers and was willing to mix up his coverage looks while doing so. His ball skills are also an asset, not just with interceptions but making plays on the ball, which he helps create with his play recognition and very good burst with some Gary Payton-like ball swipes.  Arnold is aggressive and can get burned once in a while, but he can play inside and out and is willing to press wide receivers (and win, as well). 2024 NFL Draft CB rankings: 5 first-round grades among top 10 prospects (1. Terrion Arnold, Alabama — 6-foot-0, 189 pounds, Redshirt Sophomore.  Overview: A Florida native and five-star recruit, Arnold signed with Alabama as a celebrated safety prospect but had to wait his turn in 2021, failing to see the field and redshirting his first year on campus. He flashed future star power the next season, however, earning seven starts and being named to the All-SEC Freshman squad by league coaches before exploding in 2023, tying for the SEC lead in both passes defensed (17) and interceptions (five), including two of the latter in the rivalry game win over Auburn, earning All-American honors. He turned 21 in late March, offering the ascending game every NFL team is looking to harness.  Strengths:  Well-built for the position with a tapered, athletic frame and long arms (31 5/8").  Loose, coordinated athlete with the agility and acceleration to carry receivers deep, as well as the shiftiness to drop and explode out of breaks.  Came to Alabama as a safety and hasn't lost his physicality and commitment to run defense, breezing through would-be blockers to attack near the line of scrimmage.  Doesn't panic when the ball is in flight, showing poise and technique to locate and play the ball (20 PBUs and six INTs over the past two seasons).  Plus awareness makes him effective in press, off-man and zone coverages, outside as well as in the slot, where he's also shown good timing as a blitzer.  Concerns:  A tick slower in Indianapolis (4.50) than ideal and may have some issues with the NFL's best vertical threats if not paired with a great pass rush (as he had at Alabama).  Lacks the closing burst of today's top cover corners.  A bit too patient, at times, as a tackler, breaking down and playing the role of the nail, rather than the hammer, latching on rather than wrapping and driving, resulting in some missed tackles Summary: Arnold grades out around the middle of the first round, rather than the top-10 selection the top corner in some drafts would command. 2024 NFL Draft: 10 player comps we love, including Jayden Daniels to Jalen Hurts (CB TERRION ARNOLD, ALABAMA - Pro Comp: L’Jarius Sneed.  Terrion Arnold is another player whose draft stock has risen in the past six months. He was allowed more opportunities to make plays in Tuscaloosa while opposing offenses shied away from Kool-Aid McKinstry. He has also dominated the pre-draft process and now seems guaranteed to be a first-round selection.  I was most impressed with Arnold’s sheer aggression and competitive spirit. McKinstry and Cooper DeJean are more technically sound than Arnold, but he makes up for that with a fearless and physical demeanor.  That competitiveness made me think of two-time Super Bowl champion L’Jarius Sneed. Their physical builds are nearly identical. Sneed is just a tick faster, but the two attack the game similarly with inside-outside versatility.  Arnold finished 2023 with a 75.9 grade in the slot while playing more than 200 snaps there. His 90.6 run-defense grade also ranked third among FBS cornerbacks, showcasing his physical nature. Prospective teams will have different ideas for how to use Arnold. 2024 NFL Draft: Cornerback prospect superlatives (BEST BALL SKILLS: COOPER DEJEAN, IOWA.  DeJean has fantastic production and feel in off-zone coverage, and that has led to an impressive display of ball skills. That’s not to say he can’t play man — he can do it all as CB1 on my board — but DeJean excels when playing a little bit off the line of scrimmage and keeping his eyes on the quarterback. His seven interceptions over the past two years tied for sixth in the FBS and tied for the most in the 2024 cornerback class with Dwight McGlothern and Mike Sainristil. Top CBs in the 2024 NFL Draft: Ranking Terrion Arnold, Quinyon Mitchell, and Others (1. Terrion Arnold, Alabama: McKinstry was essentially the consensus CB1 heading into the 2023 campaign, and he played well enough to stay in the conversation. But there’s another cornerback who put up an even better argument — and he played across from McKinstry on the field.  Heading into the year, Terrion Arnold was a young redshirt sophomore who needed more time to grow and gain trust in his abilities. The Texas game early on was an example of this. Arnold missed more than one coverage exchange, and his support angles were streaky.  But as the year went on, Arnold morphed into a lockdown two-phase CB and an elite all-encompassing playmaker before everyone’s eyes. He ended the season with 63 tackles, 6.5 tackles for loss, a sack, five interceptions, 12 pass deflections, and a forced fumble.  At 6’0″, 196 pounds, with good length, Arnold legitimately has all of the tools to be a blue-chip NFL cornerback and a scheme-versatile one at that. He’s an easy accelerator, extremely fluid mover, and he showcases excellent discipline and reaction to stimulus in man coverage — as well as the timing and vertical athleticism to close the lid.  Beyond those traits in coverage, Arnold is also one of the best 2024 NFL Draft CBs in run support — tenacious attacking blocks and attacking the ball. This kind of cornerback is a defensive coordinator’s dream, and it’s a dream many will leap to make a reality this coming April.) 2024 NFL Scouting Combine winners and losers by the numbers: Defense (WINNER: QUINYON MITCHELL, TERRION ARNOLD AND NATE WIGGINS - There isn’t a consensus CB1 in the 2024 NFL Draft as of right now. Of the five players who have a legitimate case, three worked out at the NFL Combine: Toledo’s Quinyon Mitchell, Alabama’s Terrion Arnold and Clemson’s Nate Wiggins. All three scored in the 87th percentile or better in Kent Lee Platte’s relative athletic score, which measures how athletic a prospect is compared to past players at that position. Mitchell earned the highest score of the bunch, earning a 9.84/10. He’s had quite easily the best pre-draft process of any cornerback prospect. After dominating at the Senior Bowl, the junior ran a 4.33-second 40-yard dash at 6-foot, 195 pounds. That time is in the 95th percentile for corners. Not only is he blazing fast, but he’s also incredibly strong for the position as well. He put up 20 reps on the bench press, which puts him in the 91st percentile for cornerbacks. Mitchell was also in the 75th percentile for his vertical jump (38 inches).  With strong performances at the combine, those three could’ve jumped the following two players on teams’ draft boards.) 2024 NFL Draft: Performance grades for the top 20 prospects on PFF's big board (CB TERRION ARNOLD, ALABAMA - PFF Grade: 88.4.  Not only is Arnold impressive in coverage, where he earned an 84.9 PFF coverage grade in 2023, but he was also very good against the run, earning a 90.6 PFF run-defense grade. 2024 All-Combine Team, Defense: Edge Jared Verse, CB Terrion Arnold among standouts in Indianapolis (Terrion Arnold - Arnold began his week by commanding the media assembled in front of him during his press availability, giving off an honest, assured vibe at the podium. He finished it by putting on a show on the field, reflecting the tape with a number of quality reps, including multiple catches that required him to snag passes outside of his frame. He's quick and fluid, he doesn't waste steps and he looks the part of the top corner in his class. Arnold's biggest hurdle: He was second in line to run each drill and had a few hiccups in terms of performing them properly, including taking a fastball to the face before returning to execute flawlessly. Once he settled in, he crushed his reps. Even his 40 time (4.50) stood up against his NFL player comparison: Bears corner Jaylon Johnson, who hit that mark in 2020. Johnson is in line to get paid plenty on his next contract in a week or so, and Arnold likely made himself plenty of money with his performance in Indianapolis.) NFL Combine takeaways: Caleb Williams still No. 1, Dallas Turner leads defensive players in 2024 NFL Draft (As for Alabama's first-round hopefuls, Terrion Arnold slipped a little with 4.5 40, but he still can go in between Wiggins and Mitchell. Unfortunately, Crimson Tide teammate Kool-Aid McKinstry didn't even get to work out to show his worth after a foot fracture was discovered during medicals. NFL Combine 2024 winners & losers: Michael Penix, Xavier Worthy among those who impressed (Winners - Quinyon Mitchell and Terrion Arnold:  Mitchell was expected to blow up the 2024 NFL Combine. He didn't disappoint. The Toledo prospect blazed a 4.33-second 40-yard dash — the second-fastest mark among cornerbacks — and demonstrated great ball skills in the gauntlet drill.  Mitchell also recorded 20 bench press reps, the best among the nine cornerbacks who participated in that drill, to show that he can fit well in a press-man system that might require more physicality. In short, his well-rounded performance could help make him the No. 1 cornerback off the board; and at the least, he looks like a top-20 pick after his performance.  The only one preventing Mitchell from being the consensus No. 1 cornerback at this stage in Arnold. The Alabama product ran a respectable 4.51-second 40-yard dash, but his top speed of 18.40 mph during his 10-yard split showed that he should be able to keep pace with NFL receivers, especially in the short game.  Arnold also was one of the smoothest players in the on-field drills. He flipped his hips and transitioned out of breaks with the best of the defensive backs, so his strong technique should further establish him as a true, No. 1 cornerback prospect for the NFL.) What We Learned in Indy: Rising DT puts on a SHOW (1. Early combine star emerging. It doesn't take long to recognize Alabama CB Terrion Arnold is oozing with confidence.  It's not all that surprising, considering he comes from the best college football program of the last 15 years or so. He also spent the past couple seasons lined up alongside fellow projected first-round CB Kool-Aid McKinstry. Iron has indeed sharpened iron.  "Kool-Aid and I, man, we're very close-knit, very tight," Arnold said. "If he's on the right side, and he just made a play, I'm like, OK, man, if they throw this ball my way, I gotta make a play. So it's friendly competition, we challenge each other, we make each other better, and that's why we're both here."  Considering how quickly Arnold is taking this combine by storm with his personality, it wouldn't be shocking if he ran for office (and won) in 15 or so years. He's still relatively new to the cornerback position after transitioning from being a high school safety -- where his team ran a defense they called "funnel the ball to Terrion," according to Arnold.  It helped that he managed to keep up with All-American receiver Jameson Williams in practice as a freshman, but Arnold's grandfather also played a key role in the former Crimson Tide star's development.  "My granddad was a roofer," Arnold explained. "I like to correlate roofing to football. My granddad always told me, 'On the roof, TA, no one's coming to save you.' So when I'm on that roof and I'm on that 8x12, 10x12 and it's a high pitch walking up there, you're slipping on the fiberglass, you kind of get a little rocky, a little shaky, you know that if you lose confidence in yourself, you're gonna slip and fall.  "It's the same way with playing corner and being a human being. If you don't have that confidence to come in and take over a room and have that presence, nobody else is going to have that confidence in you. Many reporters were smiling and laughing throughout Arnold’s entertaining podium interview Thursday morning.  Arnold even made a lasting impression on some NFL head coaches, including Las Vegas Raiders coach Antonio Pierce.  “He’s a guy full of energy,” Arnold said about meeting with Pierce. “When I walked into the room, he was like, ‘Are you an energetic person?’ I was like, ‘You know I am.’ … He was like, ‘I like you already.’”  Arnold mentioned his lofty goals during his podium interview, saying he aims to make the Pro Football Hall of Fame. 2024 NFL Draft: College Football Game Recaps – Week 14 (Alabama cornerbacks Kool-Aid McKinstry and Terrion ‘Ghost’ Arnold have a shot at being late first-round picks next April during the 2024 NFL Draft. In the second quarter, McKinstry flew over in zone coverage and almost made a leaping interception, but the ball sailed through his hands on a difficult leaping grab. Around midway through the game, McKinstry left the field with an injury. While McKinstry has received high first-round hype, NFL team sources don’t project him there, with many having him as a second-round pick or late first-rounder.  Arnold is the more talented cover corner, but McKinstry has had more media hype. In the second quarter, Arnold was tested deep downfield, but he had blanket coverage on wide receiver Arian Smith in the end zone to help force an incompletion. Early in the fourth quarter, Arnold had tight coverage and slapped away a third-down pass, but a pass-interference penalty was called on Arnold. Arnold was too physical holding the receiver on the play. Late in the fourth quarter, Arnold showed his fearlessness when he fired into the backfield on a third-and-goal from the one to start a tackle for no gain.  Arnold is a good cover corner prospect for the NFL, but he has a concerning lack of speed for the next level. Arnold ran down the sideline for a touchdown to clinch the win for Alabama.  Arnold had a rough game against Texas early in the season, but he has bounced back since then and is turning in a very good year for the Crimson Tide. Arnold is a well-rounded player who has size, physicality, and good technique. The only real flaw for Arnold is he is not fast, which presents some limitations for the NFL. He will need to be protected from being in man on speed receivers. Still, Arnold looks like a good fit for a zone team, and he looks like he will become a first- or second-round pick next April in the 2024 NFL Draft.) The Alabama cornerback broke on a late throw to the outside against Kentucky for a pick, giving him a highlight reel play, but it was his overall shutdown cornerback abilities that put him on the Team of the Week here.  He was dominant in coverage and flashed in run defense. 2024 NFL Draft Stock – Week 10 (Terrion Arnold, CB, Alabama:  Arnold had a rough game against Texas early in the season, but he has bounced back since then and is turning in a quality year for the Crimson Tide. Arnold is a well-rounded player in possession of size, physicality, and good technique. The only real flaw with Arnold is his lack of speed, as that presents some limitations for the NFL. He will need to be protected from being in man on speed receivers. Still, Arnold looks like a good fit for a zone team. 2024 NFL Draft: College Football Game Recaps – Week 10 (To open the third quarter, Daniels kept ripping the Alabama defense, and Nabers got open on Arnold while running a slant for a gain of 17 yards to convert a third-and-10. On the next play, Arnold made a superb tackle on Nabers that blew up a wide receiver screen. Daniels added another good run, and then lofted in beautiful pass to Nabers, who made a phenomenal hands catch along the sideline for a gain of 30 yards.  Daniels stared down a receiver on the first play of the fourth quarter, and Dallas Turner timed his jump to deflect the pass in the air. Arnold caught the loose ball to come down with his second interception of the season. Shortly later, Daniels took a hard hit to the head from Turner, which knocked the signal-caller out of the game. Daniels finished his evening having completed 15-of-25 passes for 219 yards, two touchdowns and an interception. He also turned 11 carries into 163 yards and another score.  Overall, this tape will help Arnold. He gave up some plays, but also did well on a number of others, including making a game-changing play with his interception.
