2024 NFL Draft Cornerbacks Rankings and Analysis (3 - Kool-Aid McKinstry, Alabama:  The number-one rate cornerback from the 2021 recruiting class, McKinstry (5’114/196) excelled as a two-way CB/WR and state champion basketball player who scored over 1,000 points in his high school career. The home-state boy who grew up in Birmingham, AL opted to play for HC Nick Saban and even practiced with the Alabama basketball team before giving up his hoop dream his freshman season.  McKinstry pulled off the rare Alabama feat of starting six games as a true (479 snaps), but proved the decision to be warranted by being named to the Freshman All-SEC Team. The five-star prodigy fulfilled his potential in 2022, leading the SEC with 16 PBU while earning First Team All SEC, and Second Team All-American honors. PFF graded him above the 75th percentile in every relevant phase of the game, with Kool-Aid allowing a scorching 2.6 yards per target and a 36% completion rate.  Arguably the 2024 NFL Draft CB1 heading into this season, McKinstry allowed 37 receptions on 80 targets in 2022. He managed to cut that number in half to 19 catches allowed on 39 targets while ranking fifth nationally with .35 receiving yards allowed per coverage snap. He received First Team All-SEC and All-American nods for his standout play before adding a Senior Bowl invite to his offseason plan.  A right foot ailment shelved him for the Combine, but he ran a strong 4.47s 40-yard dash (78th%) at his pro day, though a pair of uninspiring jumping tests and no agility testing means we have an incomplete athletic profile to work with from a testing perspective.  Is more instinctive in zone diagnosing route concepts as opposed to being a pugnacious in-your-face man corner. Profiles as a solid all-around player who doesn’t possess supersonic long-speed but has a firm grasp of the nuances of the position and also can return kicks. Kool-Aid McKinstry, CB, Alabama:  Not long ago, McKinstry was considered to be the top cornerback in the draft class, plus was expected to go early in the draft. With the emergence of Quinyon Mitchell and Terrion Arnold, along with a foot injury, McKinstry's stock has fallen a bit.  However, there's still plenty to like about the player. He was sound in man coverage throughout his career at Alabama, and is a tough player in the run game. He has good feet, plus would fit nicely in Detroit's defensive scheme. Caputo: Lions NEED to draft a high-end cornerback (Alabama’s Terrion Arnold is not as big and fast as Mitchell and DeJean, but is incredibly fluid in movement and instinctive. He is at his best utilizing that length in press coverage where he his presented with the opportunity to bully an opposing wideout at the line of scrimmage. McKinstry's frequent hand usage is to his benefit more often than not, throwing pass-catchers off of their routes. His football IQ is high as he regularly anticipates route progressions in coverage and beats opponents to the spot. McKinstry may be the best corner in this class playing the run game as a top tier tackler. His only issues come if he has to play a receiver from behind. That's when the hand-fighting can lead to penalties, but that scenario didn't happen to him too often in college.) Kool-Aid McKinstry, Alabama — 6-0, 199, Junior.  Overview: Stop me if you've heard this before but McKinstry signed with Alabama as a five-star recruit. He cracked the starting lineup in his first season on campus, recording 25 tackles and his first interception while playing in all 15 games. He would ascend to All-American honors each of the next two seasons, leaving Alabama with 93 tackles, including five tackles during that time, as well as 23 passes broken up and two interceptions.  Strengths:  Well-built cornerback with above-average height, length (32" arms) and muscle mass.  Three-year starter, facing daily practice alongside against elite competition.
His experience shows with his consistency in both man and zone.  Composed and coordinated in press, easily corralling receivers at the line scrimmage with his long arms and subtly rerouting them with active hands while shadowing their movements downfield due to his light feet and loose hips.  Quick reacting in zone coverage, showing good awareness of route developing around him and closing in a flash, including in run support.  Good ball-skills and vision, serving as Alabama's primary punt returner the past two seasons, averaging 15.8 yards per return in 2022.  Concerns:  Gets a bit grabby downfield, which may result in more holding penalties in the NFL than he saw at Alabama (penalized seven times in 2021-2022, albeit none in 2023).  Too often played the receiver and not the ball, turning just two of his 23 career pass breakups into interceptions.  Occasionally ducks his head as a tackler, leading with his shoulder and failing to wrap securely and bring his hips, leading to missed arm tackles.  Summary: McKinstry's unique nickname (given to him by his grandmother) may seem silly to some, but there is nothing immature about his game, which is as battle-tested and reliable as it gets in this class. Team sources, however, say that this is a tricky surgery and often times requires a second try to fix the issue. 2024 NFL Draft: College Football Game Recaps – Week 14 (Alabama cornerbacks Kool-Aid McKinstry and Terrion ‘Ghost’ Arnold have a shot at being late first-round picks next April during the 2024 NFL Draft. In the second quarter, McKinstry flew over in zone coverage and almost made a leaping interception, but the ball sailed through his hands on a difficult leaping grab. Around midway through the game, McKinstry left the field with an injury. While McKinstry has received high first-round hype, NFL team sources don’t project him there, with many having him as a second-round pick or late first-rounder.  Arnold is the more talented cover corner, but McKinstry has had more media hype. In the second quarter, Arnold was tested deep downfield, but he had blanket coverage on wide receiver Arian Smith in the end zone to help force an incompletion. Early in the fourth quarter, Arnold had tight coverage and slapped away a third-down pass, but a pass-interference penalty was called on Arnold. NFL Draft Notes: College Football Game Recaps (There were some very good NFL draft matchups with the Texas receivers taking on the Alabama defensive backs. Overall, the Longhorns receivers won the matchup, and this tape is going to end up hurting the draft grades of Crimson Tide cornerbacks Kool-Aid McKinstry and Terrion Arnold. The speed of Longhorns Xavier Worthy and Adonai Mitchell gave McKinstry and Arnold a lot of problems.  Early in the second quarter, Arnold was struggling to run with the speed receiver Mitchell, and Arnold had to hold him from getting open for a long touchdown. The holding was correctly flagged. In the third quarter, Arnold made a nice play in run defense, darting past Mitchell to get into the backfield for a tackle for a loss. Also in the same quarter, Arnold broke well on a dig route to break up a pass, but then at the start of the fourth quarter, Arnold drew his second holding call after he had to grab onto Mitchell. Arnold being reduced to holding to prevent long pass plays means this tape is going to hurt his draft grade.  In the first quarter on a third-and-goal, Worthy got separation from McKinstry, but Worthy dropped the ball in the front of the end zone. At the start of the second quarter, Worthy ran a deep post out of the slot and burned a freshman safety to get open for a 44-yard touchdown. Mitchell got the better of McKinstry in the third quarter, making a back-shoulder reception for a 42-yard gain, and then in the fourth quarter, beat McKinstry again on a quick slant for a short touchdown. Team sources have not been as high on McKinstry as some of the media hype suggests, and this game illustrated why, as McKinstry showed some speed and stiffness issues that are going to be problematic for covering NFL receivers.) College Football Week 2: 2024 Draft prospects to watch, including Shedeur Sanders, Michael Pratt and Alabama vs Texas (WRS XAVIER WORTHY, ADONAI MITCHELL (TEXAS) VS. CB KOOL-AID MCKINSTRY (ALABAMA) - Texas vs. Alabama.  The big matchup in college football, regardless of conference, is Alabama versus Texas this week. Saturday will be Part 2 of the home-and-home agreement between the two, as Alabama came through with a field goal in the final minute of the game to win against the Longhorns in Austin last season. This time it will be in Tuscaloosa.  No Bryce Young in this one anymore, but a headliner will be between three draft prospects who are both top 30 on PFF’s preseason 2024 big board in Alabama cornerback Kool-Aid McKinstry and Texas wide receivers Xavier Worthy and Adonai Mitchell.  Last season was McKinstry’s first as a full-time starter, and his performance against Texas was his lowest-graded game all season. He recorded a 48.1 coverage grade on 44 coverage snaps. Worthy, on the other hand, fared well, earning a 71.2 receiving grade (third highest of his season) with 97 receiving yards (second highest of his season). Of Worthy’s 10 targets that game, four were when he was matched up with McKinstry, but two were behind the line of scrimmage; another was a good catch from Worth on a hook route, and the other he had McKinstry beat on an out-and-up vertical route, but it was a bad throw from Quinn Ewers.  Mitchell comes to Texas via the transfer portal from Georgia. Mitchell and McKinstry did have two games where they were on the same field in 2021 as true freshmen in the SEC Championship Game and National Championship. In those two games, Mitchell saw eight total targets, four of which were against McKinstry, who did not give up a catch on any of the four targets, though he was called for a flag on two of them.  There’s a lot of NFL draft bragging rights on the line in that matchup.) Lions 2024 draft watch: 7 players to watch, including CB Kool-Aid McKinstry (Kool-Aid McKinstry, CB, Texas (Junior):  An excerpt from Brugler’s cornerbacks preview:  “McKinstry offers many of the characteristics that NFL teams covet at the position. He has size, movement skills and ball awareness and enters the 2023 season as the top draft-eligible defensive back for many around the league. Last season against Texas was probably his worst game in coverage of the six 2022 tapes I studied. All eyes will be on him when Quinn Ewers and the Longhorns offense go to Tuscaloosa this September.”  How he’d fit with the Lions:  In the conversation for CB1 in this draft class, McKinstry was a rare freshman starter in Alabama Nick Saban’s scheme—Lions’ nickelback Brian Branch being another. McKinstry is a fluid and long athlete with lockdown corner upside. Last season, he broke out, securing 16 pass breakups, illustrating his nose for the football and ability to make plays. The Lions could be in the market for an elite outside corner next offseason, and scouts surely got a long look at him while evaluating Branch last draft.) CFB Week 2 SEC Preview: Kool-Aid McKinstry, Ulysses Bentley IV, and Layden Robinson Highlight Key Matchups for SEC Prospects (Kool-Aid McKinstry, Terrion Arnold, and Malachi Moore Face Tough Texas Trio:  Texas QB Quinn Ewers was the top recruit in the nation for his class. Xavier Worthy, Adonai Mitchell, and Ja’Tavion Sanders all appear primed to threaten the top 100 picks in the NFL Draft. And the Longhorns’ offensive coordinator just so happens to have an intimate understanding of the Crimson Tide defense after spending time as the team’s OC.  Kool-Aid McKinstry might be the first cornerback off the board in 2024. But a player like Worthy is an outstanding test for the potential top-10 pick. Worthy might be built like a stalk of asparagus, but he’s explosive and knows how to tempo routes and make plays in the air.  Terrion Arnold and Malachi Moore fit into the bucket many Alabama secondary players tend to. They’re not elite talents, but playing in Alabama’s secondary puts them in the spotlight, and they’ll be discussed whether they’re primed NFL Draft prospects or works-in-progress.  Moore is the biggest wild card, and he may have the most difficult matchup of the bunch. I had a question at times about his ball awareness, but obviously a lot to like here."  Draft range: First round.  Final thoughts - Kool-Aid McKinstry is the best ball-denying defensive back in all of college football, as evidenced by his 16 passes defended in 2022. His agility is top tier as he can stick to wide receivers on almost any route, able to back-pedal and flip his hips at any angle within seconds. SEC preseason superlatives for the 2024 NFL Draft (Best in coverage: CB Kool-Aid McKinstry, Alabama
McKinstry allowed 352 yards and one touchdown last season. Pass attempts were completed 44.0% of the time when he was in primary coverage, according to TruMedia. McKinstry's 20% pass breakup rate was 23rd-best in the country among defenders with at least 200 pass-coverage snaps. Early 2024 NFL Draft cornerback rankings: Kool-Aid McKinstry is latest star Alabama DB (1. KOOL-AID MCKINSTRY, ALABAMA:  McKinstry is the next Nick Saban cornerback prodigy. He is the ideal athlete at 6-foot-1 and 195 pounds to play as an outside cornerback and has been starting since his true freshman season. In 2022, he played 796 snaps out wide, all of which came as a right cornerback. His mirror ability and recovery speed are NFL caliber for how much press coverage he plays (427 of his 518 total coverage snaps were in press).  His hips are fluid and explosive.
