His quick feet and straight-line speed help him stick to receivers, forcing quarterbacks to look in another direction. Newton is adept at watching receivers' eyes to help him challenge the catch. He begs offenses to throw quick screens in his direction so he can make a play moving downhill. Also, he's no wallflower in the run game or as a blitzer from the slot, attacking ball-carriers and securely wrapping them up. College Draft Prospects Lions Must Watch Week 1 (CB Josh Newton, TCU: Last season, TCU was a cinderella story that rolled its way to the national championship before being beaten by Georgia. Gone is the quarterback who led the show, but a number of key defensive contributors return. Newton is among them and he's poised for a breakout year. After recording three interceptions last season, he's set to take on the top assignment against opposing receivers every week. He's a long defender who is athletic enough to stay with faster receivers in man coverage. The Lions play plenty of man-to-man, so he would be a solid fit. Detroit added two cornerbacks this offseason, but Emmanuel Moseley is on a one-year deal. If that deal doesn't work out, the Lions could be in the market for another addition.) His lone weakness is not having top-notch speed, but the rest of his game is impressive. Newton shows good patience in both press and off alignments, never panicking in his drops and continuing to mirror until he has to flip his hips and run. He hunts the ball effectively, using his length to swat at passes. Most importantly, he has the necessary change-of-direction ability to stay in the hip pocket of receivers on difficult whip routes.
