2025 Mock Draft Round Up #17

Walter football (28. DE J.T. Tuimoloau, DE:  The Lions need another edge rusher for the long term, especially after what happened with Aidan Hutchinson last night.  J.T. Tuimoloau has flashed some great pass-rushing potential, but must be more consistent.  60.  Caleb Rogers, OT:  The Lions are great because of their offensive line. They could stand to add a young guard to eventually take over for one of the veterans.  Caleb Rogers was one of the top performers in the agility drills at the combine.  101. Davison Igbinosun, CB:  The Lions lost Carlton Davis, so they’ll need to obtain a new cornerback.  Davison Igbinosun has nice size and ball skills.  130. WR Evan Stewart.  196. LB Chaz Chambliss:  It shouldn’t surprise anyone if the Lions obtain two edge rushers during draft weekend.  Chaz Chambliss is a great blitzer. He should be a designated pass rusher.) PFN Infante (28.  Grey Zabel, OG, North Dakota State:  Kevin Zeitler left for the Titans in free agency, giving the Lions an opening at right guard along an otherwise-stacked Detroit Lions offensive line.  North Dakota State has had two offensive linemen drafted on Day 2 in the last four years. Grey Zabel, an experienced starter with strong short-area quickness, a nasty demeanor, and versatility across the line, could be the highest-drafted player of the bunch.  60.  Jack Sawyer, EDGE, Ohio State:  A defensive tackle in Round 1 would help the Lions’ defensive line depth problem, but after releasing Za’Darius Smith, they could use more help at defensive end, too.  The hero of the Cotton Bowl for his strip-sack and fumble recovery for a touchdown against Texas, Jack Sawyer’s powerful style of rushing and high-effort play was a massive boost to Ohio State’s defense over the years. NFL.om Filice (26. DE Shemar Stewart:  PROJECTED TRADE WITH LOS ANGELES RAMS.  Considering Stewart is an edge rusher who totaled 4.5 sacks in three years at Texas A&M, how should Lions-aligned readers feel about this projection? Well, two things can be true at the same time:  The meager sack production is highly concerning.  The meager sack production is the only reason he’s theoretically still available for Detroit in this range.  A former five-star recruit out of the Miami area, Stewart is a long, large, freak-show athlete who predictably blew up the combine. And despite the routinely-cited sack figures (exactly 1.5 in each of his three college seasons), he led a talented A&M D-line with 39 pressures last season, per Pro Football Focus.  All of which is to say, Stewart could be long gone by this point on April 24. So, in the here and now of this mock, Detroit jumps at the opportunity to land a traitsy running mate for Aidan Hutchinson.) Branded a "finisher" at Boston College, the technically exquisite Ezeiruaku could be a higher-upside successor opposite Aidan Hutchinson.) Mike Green | Edge | Marshall:  Even before all of their injuries last year, the Lions already needed an upgrade on the opposite side of the defensive front from Aidan Hutchinson. Green isn't the most well-rounded prospect in terms of his run defense, but he's got an explosive first step and gaudy production, leading the FBS in sacks last season.  60. CBS Edwards (28. OT Josh Conerly Jr.:  Detroit has been associated with edge rushers often in the first round but offensive tackle is hardly ever mentioned. Taylor Decker will turn 32 in August and the Lions would save nearly $12 million toward the salary cap next offseason. The opportunity for Josh Conerly to sit and learn behind Decker for a year is appealing.) Draft Tek (28. DE Nic Scourton:  The Detroit Lions have been a model of efficient roster building since Brad Holmes got to town four years ago. After last year's team was strafed with major injuries, though, the D-Line and pass rush in particular have been clearly in need of reinforcement. But those fresh bodies have not come during free agency - Marcus Davenport and Levi Onwuzurike were re-upped, Z'Adarius Smith was cut, Roy Lopez was brought in for senior DT depth. Smith has been seen hanging around Detroit with rapper girlfriend Kash Doll, leading some to expect him back on the squad. But entering the draft, edge rushing remains a bright red blinking light on the Needs board.  Nic Scourton of Texas A&M has the gritty vibe of a Lions guy, and may well be available at Pick 28. He has the strength and anchor to hold the edge and collapse the pocket as the Lions require, along with a devastating spin move and refined hand attack to give Aiden Hutchinson the bookend buddy he has lacked. They can add another edge pass rusher into their rotation (Georgia’s Mykel Williams), capitalize on a wide receiver that falls or go back to the identity of their rebuild: the offensive line. USA Today Middlehurst-Schwartz (28.  Derrick Harmon, DT, Oregon:  Defensive tackle might not seem like the foremost area of concern for the Lions, but Alim McNeill and Mekhi Wingo's recoveries from torn anterior cruciate ligaments suffered late last season only further highlight the need for depth along a line that was undone by injuries. Comfortable attacking from almost anywhere, Harmon would surely be a welcome addition to a defense that looks desperate to set the tone up front.) PFN Weissman (28. James Pearce Jr., EDGE, Tennessee:  James Pearce Jr. is one of my favorite edge rushers in this class and doesn’t get enough credit. He has excellent speed, bend and control to beat tackles around the edge.  Putting him opposite Aidan Hutchinson would give the Detroit Lions one of the best young pass-rushing duos in the league.  60.  Andrew Mukuba, Safety, Texas:  Andrew Mukuba can play both nickel and safety and brings some of the same versatility as Brian Branch. Yahoo Tice/McDonald (28.  Donovan Jackson, OG, Ohio State:  Christian Mahogany, a 2024 draft pick, looks like he will be the future starter at right guard for the Lions, but I still think the Lions are going to keep adding talent to the tip of the spear of their franchise. Jackson played admirably as a tackle after Josh Simmons was injured, but his best path as a professional is staying inside at guard. While the Lions might prefer a lineman with true inside-outside versatility for a possible Taylor Decker successor, Jackson has the size, power and athleticism to be a needle-mover at the position and will keep the cupboard full for offensive line coach Hank Fraley.) Fox sports Rang (28. Donovan Ezeiruaku, Edge, Boston College:  The loss of Aidan Hutchinson to injury last year sapped much of the speed and ferocity from the Lions' defense, and finding another defender to complement that should be their top priority. Ezeiruaku offers both, turning heads at the Combine with his burst and bend and registering an ACC-leading 16.5 sacks and 21 tackles for loss last year. Marcus Mbow, OG, Purdue:  The Lions' offensive line is one of the league's best positional groups, but with left tackle Taylor Decker and left guard Graham Glasgow each entering their 10th NFL seasons, Detroit might want to start thinking about the new model.) PFN Decker (28. Tyler Booker, OG, Alabama:  Dan Campbell and Brad Holmes have done a remarkable job building and establishing a strong identity for their organization. They have a relentless focus on finding smart, tough, and dependable players who align with their culture—and they refuse to compromise. With the loss of Kevin Zeitler to the Titans in free agency, fortifying the offensive line has become a top priority.  Booker, at 6’5” and 325 pounds, is a young talent who has renowned leadership skills. He’s a powerful presence in both pass protection and the run game, excelling at delivering a dominant first punch while maintaining excellent pad level. CBS Wilson (28. OT Grey Zabel:  No one helped themselves more at the Senior Bowl than Zabel, who played primarily left tackle in 2024 for NDSU, but had experience at guard and center too. He was used solely on the interior in Mobile and he looked like a 10-year vet no matter where he lined up. Zabel stood out in the Week 1 opener against Colorado and his stock has been on the rise ever since. Talking to teams at the Senior Bowl, he may be a better leader than football player and that's saying something.  60. DE Oluwafemi Oladejo.  102. Detroitlions.com Twentyman (28. OL Grey Zabel, North Dakota State. Zabel showed at the Senior Bowl he can handle the step up in competition. He started at four different spots along the offensive line in college and when he moved to center at the Senior Bowl he was probably the most consistent of the bunch. The Lions love that kind of versatility upfront.  Zabel could compete for a starting spot at guard right away and could be a plug-and-play piece at a number of different spots, if needed. PFF Cameron (28. EDGE James Pearce Jr., Tennessee:  Pearce's body of work is undeniably that of a first-round prospect, although his draft stock has dropped. The junior out of Tennessee boasts one of the most impressive grading profiles in a class full of great pass rushers, having placed in the 96th percentile or better in PFF pass-rush grade on true pass sets, PFF grade without play action and pass-rush win rate.) Walter football Charlie (28. J.T. Tuimoloau:  The Lions could use more rotational edge rush talent and defensive line depth. Plus, Marcus Davenport and Josh Paschal will be in the last year of their contracts in 2025 and both have durability issues. Here’s a rusher to go with Aidan Hutchinson in the long-term. The Lions like edge rushers that are strong and have size. Tuimoloau has the can rush with power or speed and he fits what the Lions like in defensive linemen.  In 2024, Tuimoloau had 12.5 sacks, 61 tackles, two forced fumbles, and three passes batted. He is a solid college player but is not a game-wrecker. Some team sources think Tuimoloau (6-4, 270) could become a pro starter, and others think he is more of a backup. Tuimoloau got red hot in the college football playoff, and that has seen his stock rise into being an early-rounder. Tuimoloau totaled 38 tackles, five sacks and two passes broken in 2023. He did not provide a big edge presence for the Buckeyes. He recorded 28 tackles, 3.5 sacks, one forced fumble, two interceptions, and two passes broken up in 2022.  60.  Donovan Jackson, G, Ohio State:  The Lions could use some interior youth given the age of Graham Glasgow and Frank Ragnow.  The 6-foot-4, 300-pound Jackson has been a tough blocker for the Buckeyes over the past few seasons. He is reliable to open holes in the ground game and does a steady job of protecting his quarterback. Jackson shows good enough feet and athleticism to handle speed rushers with the strength in his base to anchor against bull rushes. Jackson looks like a safe pick to turn into a solid pro starter.  101. Josaiah Stewart, OLB.  The Lions take a rotational edge rusher.  In 2024, Stewart has 8.5 sacks with 33 tackles and two forced fumbles. Stewart (6-1, 245) has been a dangerous pass rusher for Michigan throughout his collegiate career. In 2021, he had a breakout season with 12.5 sacks, 43 tackles, and three forced fumbles. In 2022, he had 37 tackles with 3.5 sacks and a forced fumble. As a junior in 2023, Stewart had 38 tackles with 5.5 sacks. Stewart would fit best as a 3-4 outside linebacker edge rusher in the NFL. Stewart does not have the size to be a base end in a 4-3 defense. In a 4-3 scheme, he would have to be a Sam linebacker that rushes off the edge in the subpackage.  129. C.J. West, DT, Indiana:  Detroit could lose some veteran defensive linemen in free agency and it would make sense to add a tackle with D.J. NFL Wires mock draft (28. Donovan Jackson, OL, Ohio State:  It was tough to look past DT Derrick Harmon and S Nick Emmanwori here, but the relative depth at those positions in the subsequent rounds helped push the versatile and talented Jackson as the choice. Jackson was already the best guard prospect in the class before moving out to left tackle and playing almost flawlessly during the Buckeyes’ national championship run; he allowed zero sacks and just seven QB hurries in eight games despite lacking any experience playing tackle. CFSN Fragoza (28. DE Donovan Ezeiruaku:  Donovan Ezeiruaku doesn’t “wow” with his traits (6’2″, 248), but he just wins as a pass rusher and has a solid floor as a run defender, thanks to his 34″ arms. That’s the type of prospect Dan Campbell is willing to bet on.  60. WR Jack Bech:  Amon-Ra St. Brown is the slot alpha. Jameson Williams is the deep threat. And Jack Bech can be the X on the line while also being versatile enough to operate as a big slot.  102. OG Dylan Fairchild:  Dylan Fairchild may not be an unjust adult in the ground game, but he’s reliable in pass protection and can line up at both guard spots if needed.  130. CB Jordan Hancock.  196. PFN Lewis (28. Donovan Ezeiruaku, EDGE, Boston College:  The 16.5 sacks during the 2024 season speak volumes, but Donovan Ezeiruaku’s tape is also flooded with pro-ready technique. He uses his hands incredibly well to shed blocks and get to the quarterback, and he plays with a relentless passion when he’s chasing down the ball.  His sack total doesn’t just consist of proverbial empty calories; he earned every bit of those 16.5 sacks. NBC Sports Dvorchak (28. DE James Pearce, EDGE, Tennessee:  Detroit released EDGE Za’Darius Smith and didn’t make any major additions to backfill Smith’s role in free agency. That leaves the team in need of another pass-rusher to put a real threat opposite Aidan Hutchinson. Pearce is an explosive defender who totaled 17.5 sacks in two years as a starter. SI Manzano (28. Donovan Jackson, OL, Ohio State:  The Lions have in-house options to fill the void left by Kevin Zeitler, but they opt to not play it safe here and add Jackson to mix for the right guard competition. ESPN Yates (No. 28 - Derrick Harmon, DT, Oregon.  "Injuries befell the Detroit defense down the stretch last season, and some of them will linger into this upcoming season -- including stalwart defensive tackle Alim McNeill's torn ACL. Harmon could help fill that hole after his breakthrough 2024 season. His 34 pressures in his lone year with the Ducks were by far the most of any FBS defensive tackle. He has the length, power at the point of attack and pursuit speed as a rusher to make a difference."  The Lions have made it clear McNeill is unlikely to be ready for Week 1. Either way, extra help on the interior wouldn't hurt for the Lions and Harmon has the strength and power to be a force inside for Detroit.  No. 60 - Tate Ratledge, OG, Georgia.  "The Lions lost Kevin Zeitler in free agency, and if they don't view either Christian Mahogany or Kayode Awosika as a lock to start at right guard, Ratledge would be a great pick. He is among the most polished players in the class."  Mahogany and Awosika are the front-runners right now to start at right guard, but a player like Ratledge, with three years starting experience and plenty of power to open up holes for Jahmyr Gibbs and protect for Jared Goff, would make it a three-horse race in camp.) He is a prospect who needs more development but has the skills to play a role as a rookie.
