Let's rank the best NFL divisions this season: Could all four NFC North teams go to the playoffs? (1. NFC North - Combined FPI rating: 7.8 overall (first).  Detroit Lions: 5.7 (second in NFL).  Green Bay Packers: 4.6 (third).  Minnesota Vikings: minus-1.1 (19th).  Chicago Bears: minus-1.4 (20th).  Through five weeks, this is the only division in which no team has a losing record. The top three teams have positive point differentials and all made the 2024 postseason, with Detroit and Minnesota posting two of the three best records in the entire league.  The Bears, the only NFC North team to miss the postseason in 2024, look very much improved under new coach Ben Johnson. And if Caleb Williams is really taking the next step as a quarterback, they could be a surprise team in the second half.  FPI is obviously concerned about the Vikings' quarterback situation, as they are 25th in offense but fourth in defense. Despite their rocky start to the season, the Chiefs are still one of the Super Bowl favorites. Their 10% chance of winning the Super Bowl is the second-highest in the NFL, and as long as they have Patrick Mahomes (73.2 grade; 14th), they’ll have a shot.  On the other side, the Lions have put to bed any notion that they’ll struggle without Ben Johnson and Aaron Glenn, beginning the season 4-1. Week 6 Predictions

CBS Breech (Detroit (4-1) at Kansas City (2-3):  I'm not saying I'm concerned about the Chiefs just yet, but I'm not saying I'm not. Heading into Week 6, the Chiefs already have more losses than they had during the entire 2024 season. Also, they're 0-3 in one-score games this year, which is a stat that I can't even comprehend, because Patrick Mahomes doesn't lose one score games. Last year, they went 11-0 in games decided by one score.  I think that I'm trying to say is that this year's Chiefs are not last year's Chiefs.   The Chiefs have already lost to the Chargers, Eagles and Jaguars, and now, they get their toughest test of the season in the Detroit Lions. The Lions will be rolling into Kansas City on a four-game winning streak, which is currently the longest in the NFL.   During their streak, the Lions have averaged 40.3 points per game. Most teams have yet to score 40 points in a single game, the Lions are AVERAGING that over the past four weeks. The Lions offense is so good because it has 10 different ways to beat you. The Lions are the only team in the NFL that has TWO running backs (David Montgomery and Jahmyr Gibbs) who have both gone over 300 rushing yards on the season (To put that in perspective, the Chiefs don't even have a single player who has rushed for more than 200 yards). The Lions rushing tandem could be a problem for a Chiefs defense that has struggled to stop the run this year, and even if they stop the run, Montgomery might just go out and throw a touchdown pass.  The Lions also have three different players who have recorded at least 200 receiving yards through five weeks and one of those players is Jameson Williams, who leads the NFL in yards per catch at 20.3. The Lions also have a defense that can get after the passer, which is something the Chiefs haven't really had to deal with over the past few weeks. Since Week 2, the Chiefs haven't played a single team that ranks in the top-25 in the NFL in sacks. The Lions have 16 sacks on the season, which ranks second in the league this year. SN Iyer (Game of the Week: Lions at Chiefs (-1, 49.5 o/u) - Sunday 8:20 p.m. ET, NBC/Peacock.  The Lions are becoming more of a complete team. Jared Goff can spread the ball around well based on the best passing matchups. The running game never lets them down. Aidan Hutchinson and Brian Branch are revving up the defense. The Chiefs are battling a touch-short week and don't have the same level of diversity and explosiveness around their quarterback, including a limited running game. SN Bender (Detroit Lions at Kansas City Chiefs (-1).  This might be a pick ‘em by kickoff given how well the Lions have played since the Week 1 loss against Green Bay. The Chiefs' front-loaded schedule continues, and Detroit has taken advantage of a plus-seven turnover ratio the last four games. CBS Dajani and Taranto (Detroit Lions at Kansas City Chiefs (-2.5) (SNF) - Dajani (Lions +2.5): The Lions have won four straight games after losing the season opener to the Green Bay Packers, which is actually the longest active win streak in the NFL. Detroit is averaging 40.3 points per contest over this four-game stretch. Is anyone missing Ben Johnson yet? Playing in Arrowhead is tough, and the Chiefs definitely won the "battle of the injury reports" on Wednesday. Kansas City had full attendance, while Terrion Arnold, Zach Cunningham, Taylor Decker, Kerby Joseph and Amon-Ra St. Brown missed practice. Still, Jared Goff is one of just two players to beat Mahomes multiple times while having zero losses to him (the other is Ryan Tannehill), and I believe the Lions can just simply outscore the Chiefs. But I'm more comfortable taking the Over. Prediction: Lions 35, Chiefs 31.  Taranto (Lions +2.5): Over the past few years, I've gotten the sense that the Lions have been one of the only few teams in the NFL that truly hasn't been afraid of the Chiefs dynasty. There's especially nothing for them to fear now, as the Chiefs are coming off of a loss to the Jaguars that dropped them to 2-3 and look as vulnerable and pedestrian as they have in a very long time. Winning in Arrowhead is a tough assignment, but that's what the Lions did on NFL opening night back in 2023. Detroit knows it can do it, and with four wins in a row to shake off its Week 1 loss, I expect that's exactly what it'll do. CBS Sullivan (Detroit Lions at Kansas City Chiefs - The Chiefs will probably figure it out by the time the regular season comes to an end, and will again look like a Super Bowl contender, but I don't see it right now. They are unable to hang with even fringe playoff contenders with their two victories on the year coming against the New York Giants and an injury-filled Baltimore Ravens squad. When the games are close, they've fallen flat, owning a 0-3 record in one-score games this season. With this spread sitting at Chiefs -2.5, I think we'll see more of the same. I have a hard time imagining this current version of the Chiefs offense keeping up with the Lions, who are averaging 34.8 points per game (most in the NFL). Dan Campbell's team comes into Arrowhead Stadium with a 10-1 record on the road dating back to the start of last season. Pro Picks: Chiefs will beat the Lions in a marquee matchup that still could be a Super Bowl preview (A Lions-Chiefs matchup was considered a potential Super Bowl preview when the schedule came out.  It still could be considering the state of the AFC.  Jared Goff leads a dynamic Lions offense against Patrick Mahomes and the inconsistent Chiefs on Sunday night in Kansas City in one of the biggest games in Week 6.  Detroit (4-1) rebounded from a lopsided loss to Green Bay in Week 1 to win four in a row. The Chiefs (2-3) were on the right track with two straight wins after opening 0-2 but gave up a final-minute score to lose to Jacksonville on Monday night.  Still, Kansas City is only one game behind in the AFC West and two behind the Bills (4-1), Jaguars (4-1) and Colts (4-1). Key Matchups, Predictions for Chiefs-Lions, Seahawks-Jaguars and More (Lions (4–1) at Chiefs (2–3) Spread: Chiefs -2.5.  Key matchup: Patrick Mahomes vs. Detroit’s corners.  Key stat: Mahomes is sixth with 1,257 passing yards.  This game might be a race to 30 points. If that’s the case, the deciding factor will likely be whether the Lions can hold up in coverage against Mahomes.  Detroit will be without its top three corners on the depth chart from when the summer began, including Terrion Arnold, D.J. Reed and Ennis Rakestraw Jr. That doesn’t bode well against the Chiefs, who over the past two weeks have racked up 858 total yards and 65 points against the Ravens and Jaguars.   Lions first-year coordinator Kelvin Sheppard has been blitz-happy, ranking ninth in sending extra rushers (28.8%). If the Chiefs can handle the pressure, Mahomes will have one-on-one opportunities against Avonte Maddox, Rock Ya-Sin and Amik Robertson. Reevaluating 32 bold NFL predictions, five weeks in: Which are on target, and which deserve a do-over? (Still a chance - Detroit Lions:  Original prediction: Edge rusher Aidan Hutchinson will record at least 100 pass rush wins, something that has happened only twice since the metric was created in 2017.  Why there's still a chance: Hutchinson is off to a nice start with five sacks through five games, but he's still well off the 100-win pace. He has 19 pass rush wins to date, putting him on track to reach 65. That would be a nice total, but not historic.  So why still a chance? 2025 NFL MVP Stock Watch: Baker Mayfield Establishes Himself as New Frontrunner (5. Jared Goff, Detroit Lions (Last week: Unranked).  Goff has proven he doesn’t need Ben Johnson calling plays to perform at an elite level in the league. Goff leads the league in touchdown passes (12) and is second in passer rating (120.7). The Lions are 4-1 and have an argument to be considered as the best team in the league at this point in the season.  The Lions have also kept Goff upright for the most part, with just eight sacks this year. NFL Players of the Week: Sam Darnold, Stefon Diggs Headline PFSN’s Highest-Graded Players in Week 5 (TE: Sam LaPorta, Detroit Lions 91.1, A-.  One of several Detroit Lions you’ll read about, Sam LaPorta led all tight ends with a 91.1 Impact Grade this week. It was the second-highest grade of LaPorta’s career, behind a 97.2 he earned in 2023 vs. the Saints.  LaPorta did his best work after the catch, piling up 42.8 YAC over expected. That was the second-most by a tight end in a game this season (Tucker Kraft had 45 in Week 2 vs. the Commanders). As a result, LaPorta averaged 4.0 yards per route, the second-highest in his career behind that Saints game (7.0). OT: Penei Sewell, Detroit Lions 88.1, B+.  Penei Sewell was again the highest-graded offensive lineman overall in Week 5. It’s the fifth time he’s been the highest graded offensive tackle in a week, and the third time he’s led all O-linemen. He accomplished both these distinctions earlier this season against the Ravens.  Sewell allowed zero pressures on 28 pass blocking snaps, and has allowed just three the entire season. He’s also yet to commit a penalty in 2025 and has the highest run blocking grade of any OL at any position.  G: Christian Mahogany, Detroit Lions 86.0, B.  Christian Mahogany joined his All-Pro teammate in recording the highest OLi grade at his position. The second-year pro’s 86.0 OLi was his best grade to date. Mahogany didn’t allow a single pressure — his second clean pass protection game of the season (also Week 2 vs. the Bears). He also didn’t commit a penalty after doing so each of the last two weeks.  With Mahogany and Sewell this week, the Lions had multiple position-leading linemen in OL Impact for the third time since 2019. Ratledge had an up-and-down showing in the Lions’ win over the Bengals. He wasn’t great in pass protection. NFL Game Recaps: Week 5 (Lions 37, Bengals 24:  Jake Browning had some nice performances late in 2023 when he took over for an injured Joe Burrow, but he hasn’t enjoyed nearly the same success in his second stint as Burrow’s replacement. Browning gave this game away, preventing the Bengals from having a chance to pull a big upset.  Jared Goff was actually the first quarterback to make a mistake in this game. He had a 7-0 lead, but lost a fumble on Trey Hendrickson strip-sack. However, it was all Browning gaffes after that. Still down 7-0, Browning threw his first interception, allowing Detroit to get the ball deep in Cincinnati territory. Browning later hurled the ball up for grabs from the back of his own end zone.  The mistakes continued into the second half, as Browning was picked a third time because he didn’t see Alex Anzalone in coverage. He also fumbled on a strip-sack, but a teammate recovered. Following this was one of the very few positive moments for Browning, as he launched a deep touchdown to Ja’Marr Chase. NFL stats and records, Week 5: Buccaneers' Baker Mayfield, Emeka Egbuka continue making history (3. Goff finding groove in new Lions offense.  After much overreaction following the Lions' Week 1 loss to the Packers in their first game of the post-Ben Johnson era, Jared Goff and play-caller John Morton have Detroit leading the NFL in scoring offense five weeks into the season. Detroit has scored 161 points over its last four games, including at least 34 in each -- tied for the longest such streak in team history (Weeks 14-17 of last season and a streak from 1952-1953).  Goff, who was 19-for-23 passing for 258 yards and three touchdowns against the Bengals, now leads the NFL with 12 passing touchdowns and a 75.2 percent completion rate. Aaron Rodgers is the only player in the last 15 years to lead the NFL in touchdown passes and completion percentage in the same season, an accomplishment he enjoyed in his 2020 MVP campaign.  Sunday marked the seventh game of Goff's career in which he threw for three touchdowns and completed 80 percent of his passes, tied with Lamar Jackson for the fifth-most of all time. NFL Week 6 narrative shifts: 11 players, coaches making me a believer; top five MVP Candidates (Coaches - 2.  John Morton Detroit Lions · OC.  So much for all the questions about Ben Johnson’s departure in Detroit. It looked rough in a season-opening loss to Green Bay, but the Lions have rolled offensively since that point with Morton calling the plays. Detroit had the league’s highest-scoring offense last season. It still holds that honor through five weeks this season. That offense has been especially potent over Detroit’s last four contests, as the team has averaged 40.3 points per game. In retrospect, it was silly to think about the Lions' offense taking a significant step back, given all the talent Morton has at his disposal. Detroit has at least one Pro Bowl-level player operating in every part of its offense. There is a major challenge coming next weekend with a road trip to Kansas City, but the Lions should come in feeling confident. This offense is as lethal as it’s ever been.  MOST INTRIGUING GAME OF WEEK 6 - Detroit Lions AT Kansas City Chiefs:  Kansas City looks more promising after rebounding from an 0-2 start, but Detroit will provide a stiff test. The Lions have answered the question of what life will be like with two new coordinators, and it's not too shabby. They’re now riding a four-game winning streak into Arrowhead Stadium, the same venue where they earned a season-opening win in 2023 and established themselves as Super Bowl contenders. Penei Sewell, tackle, Detroit Lions.  Joe Alt, tackle, Los Angeles Chargers (Tie).  I am sure I’ve stepped in it with the Alt nod, but let me make my case. I think we can agree that Sewell is on another planet right now. However, when Alt exited the Giants game in Week 4 with a high ankle sprain, we saw just how quickly that offense’s passing game evaporated. The Chargers were tortured by a Giants’ pass rush that couldn’t create havoc against the Cowboys two weeks prior, despite leading in a series of very obvious passing situations. Alt has switched positions and was a stabilizing force after the loss of Rashawn Slater. Now, is he playing better than Jordan Mailata? No. But do we have a vivid look at what the team is like with and without Alt? Yes. Sewell is developing into one of the more athletic tackles I’ve ever seen. His matchup against Myles Garrett from Week 4 should be hung in a museum as one of the great edge vs. anchor tackle battles in the modern NFL.
